Hello there, I've owned the D-Lux type 109 for 6 years and the D-Lux 7 for 6 years and bought the D-Lux 8 a few months ago and I've never experienced any of the problems that you mentioned. I treat them as compact camera's and accept them as just that. I don't think of these cameras as serious tools, just fun to have with me when out and about hiking and walking.... thanks for the video
@@alanjones8579 I do own a lot of point and shooters, so I am not a novice, that said maybe I have a bad copy. Sadly it is not the image quality or the build quality being the issue, it is really the bugs in areas that I have not experienced before.
For the amount of money Leica demands for a new-skin 8, I expected more. I agree with everything said in this video. The zoom is also ridiculously slow.
I was thinking the same things you said. I have a few of the older D Lux cameras, as well as the 7. I also have the Type 109. I have never experienced any of these issues, ever. I have never taken my battery out for any reason. I also never tried to wake the camera up for it to fail. I have thoroughly enjoyed each of my cameras. I have not bought the 8 yet, but I’m planning to, but I may wait for the next sensor to be released or I may buy the Q3. I keep my D Lux 7 on me daily, and it has given me countless moments of peace, joy and created beautiful art in the process.
So you can set your D-LUX 8 in the custom menu so when you turn it on, the zoom goes to whatever focal length you set it on? My old Ricoh GX200 had this function and it was really useful.
Any camera that has a pro lens, and at least 16mp... is absolutely a Pro-Camera in the hands of a Pro-fessional Photographer.. However if you equate "it has to have more MP to be a pro" ,.. then of course you are a Camera NOOB... self defined.
If you turn it off, it's the Bluetooth or the camera is still writing to the card. Thats the thing with the buffer, what you expirienced while shooting, the buffer is really small. Like you said, most of the points could be corrected via firmware, I don't get it why they not correct some of the issues. They're easy to fix and would make this camera even better to sell. I don't have the issue with the WB. I think it is very accurate most of the times and is able to pick the right Kelvin even in more complex situations, where I see others struggle. The camera itself is more a bunch of quirks as it is a perfect camera but I have to say that I love to use it as my second camera to the A1 at events etc. It might not be super fast with the zoom, but when I think about what it is, I'm ok with it. Some argue the price is to high but this thing fits a purpose. The package is small, you get a very bright lens that you don't get for normal mFT cameras and you get something that is really stands out and that is the EVF. For this size of camera, it's the best evf I ever have seen. In the end I understand if someone says no, thats to much quirks but I don't think I would like to give up on this little camera.
Thanks for a balanced response. The firmware is one thing that mystifies me. And you are right to highlight the max aperture on the zoom lens. Unfortunately the entire experience didn't agree with me
I've been using a Fujifilm X-M1 for a while, looking for a change, and always liked the look of the LX100 so nearly bought the D-Lux 8. But at £1500 I couldn't justify the price. I bought a used Fujifilm X30, for a third of the price, instead and love it! Startup in a couple seconds, EVF, tilt screen, manual zoom with OIS, mic port! Yes the sensor is smaller but really for posting online it's enough and the picture quality is what you expect of Fuji. btw. I fell for the Lumix S9 marketing and ended up returning that so I know how you feel, buyers remorse.
Well there are so many good options out there for that price range and indeed the older mft and Fuji cams still pack loads of punch for an affordable pricing. I just bought the S9 but for one specific reason (episode coming up). Let's see how it lives up
I had a D-LUX 8 too, but just for less than two months. Then I returned it to the dealer, because of some of the issues, you mentioned. You’ve just described all the annoying little things about my D-Lyx 7, Paul! I’m glad someone else complains about the slowww zoom lens, and the other seemingly minor, yet annoying idiosyncrasies of what could have been fabulous cameras to compete with the Fuji 100x series. When I originally saw the D-Lux 8 specs earlier this year I was astonished that Leica put out an old camera that had a new skin and was just named the 8. Pure laziness, Leica! It is not a Micro Four Thirds camera. It does not have a Micro Four Thirds sensor. Micro Four Thirds is a lens mount standard for interchangeable lenses, not a sensor. This camera has a 4/3" sensor. All Micro Four Thirds cameras use 4/3" sensors, but not all cameras with 4/3" sensors are Micro Four Thirds.
Thats a bit nitpicky. It's a Four Thirds sensor, Micro Four Thirds is the mount. No one is taking about a Four Thirds sensor today anomore, most of us call it mFT sensor. It's also not fullframe it's 35mm and so on.
@@Benjamin_Jehne Four Thirds is also not a sensor, it's also a lens mount. 4/3" is the sensor size, just like 1" is the sensor size. You wouldn't say the Sony RX100 cameras are Nikon 1 cameras, or use Nikon 1 sensors, just because they happen to be the same sensor size, would you?
As a long time Leica user of more than 25 years, the moment I read the specs of this camera, I knew it was just an exercise in cashing in the very sudden popularity of the Leica cameras. It has nothing to offer that a proper MFT camera of 2015 couldn't do better., and at a fraction of the price. BTW, all those who sing the praises of Fuji this and Fuji that, had better just grab an Olympus EM5 MKII or MK III and realise how archaic their beloved X100s are, and they are cheaper with the ability to change lenses. I don't mind the minor issues too much (for now?) since I bought it as a second hand camera for a reasonable price. Will probably get a Sony A7C ii or A7CR as a main street and travel camera next
Indeed it is the minor things that impact positively or negatively on the photography experience doesn't it?
Couldn’t agree more!
This is Leica all over, I'm afraid and I speck as a former Leica shooter who got fed up with putting up with strange quirks with Leica digital cameras.
Sadly yes, Leica Q3 and M11 seem to have similar issues at times, doesn't seem to be consistent either. The latter sparking my interest
@@PaulTakesPhotos I was also an early adpoter of the Leica Q which to be fair was pretty much close to a perfect Leica product (for once). But I found it profoundly boring as a camera and decided I preferred using my Ricoh GR, so I sold the Q.
oh that missing "resume focal length on startup" feature is really a bummer. The Olympus PEN E-P/L M43 compact cameras do have that feature with power zooms.
also leica is known for shitty firmware bugs :) I honestly wouldn't spend that money on a rebadged Lumix
@@recreationalplutonium thanks for that, didn't know that. PEN is still on the list
💡 Prefer: Nikon Z50 ii...
+ Laowa 12-24mm tilt/shift
👌🏼
Never shot on the Nikon Z-mount. It is growing on me though 👍😉
Great video!
Thank you, glad you found it helpful
I wonder if it's buggy since it comes from China. Or is it bad software? Hmmm!
You forgot it is Panasonic. Basic layer of firmware is from Japan. Nice menus are ... nobody knows who wrote the code. And parts are MiC.
Yeah rub it in :)
I would have liked to finish watching your video, but the annoying pop-ups and sound effects were just too distracting to me.
I am sorry about that, will take it into account for the upcoming episodes. Thank you for the feedback
You could have bought the LUMIX LX100II, which is pretty much the same camera, for 650 Euros less.
@@distomos8118 I came to that conclusion too :(
Buy a griii. It’s perfect.
Already own it, the GRIIIX that is
No Flippy screen as well? Pass
As a street photographer, turning on the camera and taking three or four seconds to set is a joke! Most the time you’ll miss the shot.
Next camera!
@@simon359 indeed so returned and don't regret it
Thumbs down for that stupid sound effect man. SMH 🤦🏽♂️
Bit harsh isnt it
It's all a cheap compact by Panasonic... rebadged with the L logo and 5x the price... 😂😂😂 another happy customer
Pretty much!
Pretty much!
It's a camera of missed opportunities. Practically no improvements to its predecessor at a ridiculous price and TBH I never liked MFT anyway... 🤷🏻♂️
You worded it well: a missed opportunity
It is not a Micro Four Thirds camera. It does not have a Micro Four Thirds sensor. Micro Four Thirds is a lens mount standard for interchangeable lenses, not a sensor. This camera has a 4/3" sensor. All Micro Four Thirds cameras use 4/3" sensors, but not all cameras with 4/3" sensors are Micro Four Thirds.
Interesting thank you for educating me. Learned something
Fuji x100vi like new second hand MPB £1560 is far superior in every way to the Leica.
Really 1560? A while back I saw it at that same mpb.com for nearly 3k.
In all honesty my Lumix GX80 does was better than the dlux 8
And it zooms so nice….😂
As a long time Leica user of more than 25 years, the moment I read the specs of this camera, I knew it was just an exercise in cashing in the very sudden popularity of the Leica cameras. It has nothing to offer that a proper MFT camera of 2015 couldn't do better., and at a fraction of the price. BTW, all those who sing the praises of Fuji this and Fuji that, had better just grab an Olympus EM5 MKII or MK III and realise how archaic their beloved X100s are, and they are cheaper with the ability to change lenses. BTW, I really hate the look of that zoom lens on this camera when extended.
@@PaulTakesPhotos check it out, price has fallen down to the price of what was a new x100v, two weeks ago the price was £1890. GX80 is a great camera.
Absolutely ❤
Just buy Japanese cameras they are better in every way.
Well Leica Q series are excellent. Bit on the pricey side though
It’s a rebadged Panasonic camera
That camera at that price is a joke
It's no joke 🤣
