i tried xpan format using s1r, gets me 26MP, love it, a brand new perspective
It is awesome isn't :) I love shooting in that way. Check out my Threads, daily shots being uploaded
Agree and i returned mine for the same reason after Leica denyed that there was something wrong with the camera!
By far the most disappointing camera release in a long time.
In a day and age where people try to get the most washed and retro feel (which often means as much fringing/halo etc) I feel like this is an insane value. Might slap this on the R5C to play around with it. Of coures it is nothing for a true, professional photographer doing prints and such with the image quality it has.
Nice summary :)
Paul, a great no nonsense video. Thank you. I bought my first ever Leica a few weeks ago and it is the Q3. I love it, but every time I think about the price, I think I must be insane 😅
With the Q3, you can set the MP level am I wrong? Also you can use different crops to achieve different focal lengths without sacrificing quality. Video, is just for those, "I need to record this" moments.
The crops on Q3 obviously decrease the number of mp's (similar as on the Q) and indeed you can set the resolution on all the Q's
I love my Q2 and bought it specifically to stop me buying loads of lenses as I had done when using previous camera systems. I bought the Q2 because I wanted the warranty that came with a new camera but I’m sure I’d have been just as happy with a Q. It was a gateway drug for me - I bought an M11 in 2023 but sold it again after I found I was having to force myself to use it instead of the Q2. The sensor was better but the Q2 more enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing your experience and one thing that rarely ever is mentioned on RUclips: do you take it with you everywhere? If so you got yourself the camera you need, want and use :)
@@PaulTakesPhotos I’ve got out of the habit of taking it out regularly. Hopefully Springtime will inspire me!
I used this for traveling. my 5D stayed at home. It makes sharp fotos. But its just not fun to use in my opinion. Sold it after two trips😮
I understand you, cameras are like cars: very personal
Excuse my ignorance because I'm new to all this, but if it's 50mm for APSC, does that mean the true focal length is actually 50mm, about an 80mm equivalent when cropped down, or actually 30mm, 50mm when cropped by the sensor
In reality they are more like 75mm full frame equivalent
@ gotcha thanks. I think I'll go for a 35mm
I have one of those cameras. Had it for a while now. I really love it. The stock grip experience is not great, but a small added grip like what you have makes a huge difference. It's a fantastic tool for street photography and just having fun with.
Indeed and it is a little bit more versatile than people tend to assume
@@PaulTakesPhotos The ND filter adds a lot. And leaving it at i+ it takes fantastic snapshots for just walkaround, while it has enough controls to get creative with. I just love it. I have a couple of Sony ILC's, but I never have those on me if I'm not planning to, while this vanishes into a pocket without problems. And it's as you note, it passes people by in a way which a phone or larger camera will not. A perfect little companion.
I do this on my S1R.
Excellent, I considered the S1R too but little bit too bulky for me :) you often use the 65:24 aspect ratio?
Dear Paul, What camera use (in this video) for record yourself? So nice skin tone, microcontrast and auto focus! Thanks
It is the Lumix S9 with the Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 and a custom LUT on the camera. I too, really am surprised how good I look 😂
Bought this to go along with my Panasonic S5, because you're right, sometimes you just want a smaller camera to carry with you everywhere instead of a bigger full frame. Combined with the 20 mm f 1.7 it is a fantastic combination.
That combo is golden. Bizarrely the camera is so cheap on the used market
I'm sure it does pretty good for a camera with a sensor the size of your pinky nail.
Same size as the iphone 16...
@ 😆yup.
@ actually, no. The iPhone has a considerably smaller sensor.
@@gibmebalutonly this camera is. Quarter of the price, comes with aperture blades, build in ND filter, view finder and indeed back dated video features that still work. Take your pick
@ oof, yeah, the EVF is abysmal.
FYI if you are gonna shoot video on this, it overheats, you can only get like 5 min of 4K
Actually there is somebody here in the comments who gave a great little tip on how to unlock the recording limit
@@PaulTakesPhotos Oh I missed that! Super awesome, great camera!
Cherishing and meticulously maintaining your Leica X2 reflects your deep appreciation for timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship. The design and craftsmanship of the Leica X2 are indeed remarkable; it is not just a camera but a true work of art. This dedication has made it a cherished part of your life, capturing countless unforgettable moments worth treasuring.
Thanks for the poetic praise
Ik heb ook de Leica CL met de 18f2.8 en dit is de combinatie die ik graag zou meenemen op reis!
How are you enjoying that lens?
@@PaulTakesPhotos I absolutely love this lens-compact and lightweight. I used to favor large cameras with long telephoto lenses, but now I much prefer smaller, more portable setups. This lens meets the needs of most travel photography, including some landscape shots. When traveling with family and friends, its wide angle is perfect for capturing everyone in the frame, even at close distances. Its compact size also allows me to spontaneously capture beautiful moments of loved ones. (If you’re unfamiliar with the system, it might take 3-5 seconds to take a shot, but once you get used to it, the process becomes much quicker.) The only drawback is the aperture. If it could go as wide as f/2 or even f/1.4, it would be the perfect lens. Overall, this setup is my favorite and the one I’m most willing to take on trips.
$1000 is not affordable by most my guy!
I bought it for 600 which for a Leica is affordable
I have the X-T1, X-T2 and X-H1. I love them all, but my favourite is the X-T1. I tend to use it mostly for Monochrome, but the colours are gorgeous too. I really would love an X pro 1, for that legendary sensor, but I'm a bit worried about getting the correct diopter, so may settle for and X-E1. I love Fuji, can you tell?
Haha I have shot on 14 different Fujifilm cameras over the years and I feel that at moment I have found my sweetspot in the Fujifilm experience and yes the XT-1 is part of it :) stay tuned for an episode coming up in april-may
didnt expect a viewfinder and thats gamechanger tbh, nowadays almost every compact cams dont have one and its pretty sad
sony best
The most important feature of the Leica Q for me is that I simply restarted taking photos again, going out - no matter the weather - and taking pictures without thinking about which lens I'm taking with me today or maybe two..... just the Leica and me and my rediscovered love and joy of photography. That's just awesome!
That is the most important thing. If you want to bring your camera with you regardless if it is a Q or Sony Rx100 series or a DSLR, often overlooked in my opinion
Your video is great and very true. I have a Leica Q and I love it. In my opinion your statement that 95% of photographers dont need more than 24 mgp is true. Every comment about the Q I share with you.
Well thank you. And I will stand by general opinion on megapixels. I don't need more than 27/28mm. Half my cameras have 10-20mp and are a joy to shoot with and render lovely image quality
As far as noise, the AI noise reductions are so good now days, its almost a non issue.
That is true, but some people only do SOOC :)
When I retired from a long career in photography and as a magazine editor/photojournalist, I switched from Nikon gear to a Fujifilm X-Pro2 three years ago. I have tried a few of the Fuji lenses along the way including a 18-55mm (which I sold), a 16mm 2.8, a 23mm 2.0, and a 35mm 2.0. I let me legs do the "zooming." And while I love each of those lenses, for everyday and travel (and because I do not like carrying a bag of gear anymore) the 23mm is as close to perfect as it gets.
The 23mm is a great lens. I personally prefer the 27mm as it is a pancake lens. And yes indeed travel as light as possible
Thank you very much. I use a Q2 since 2 years and it is a fantastic experience all the time I have it in my hand, best regards.
Just out of curiosity what made you choose the Q2?
I chose the Q2 because my X 100 V6 was on backorder and I needed a camera for my trip. I got the Q2 on sale and so I took it.
1:09 Wan toe pats, der wie goo. Jup definitely dutch! Great video, keep it up!
@@BartelJaap88 thanks and indeed as Dutch as Louis Van Gaal
Well for general photography I use my Sony Xperia phone. It takes high quality pictures and slips in my back pocket! Nothing else needed.
I had an Xperia two years ago, very good for photography and underrated in the phone market for the photography and videography features it had. Sadly the Android OS was for some reason very buggy
Portrait shots with the 28mm Q are not nice because of the perspective and the big noses .... Stepping back a bit to get a more pleasing perspective and cropping to a 35mm angle would be a solution, but then the resolution is too low for me. That was my main reason for choosing the Q2.
That makes sense, 28mm for portraits can be challenging. Thank you for sharing
I use the digital crop lines to remind me to step back, cropping to the final size on the computer. I’ve never found the resolution to be an issue but then I almost always crop, sometimes to 100mm equivalent on my Q2. If needed, you can use something like Topaz Gigapixel.
I have this setup only I have the 15mm f1.7 instead of 14mm. Baslcally I house the 20mm on my GM1 (which is more convenient as an EDC but isn't really capable of video but neither is the 20mm lens so it's a good match). I house the 15mm on my GX85 but I prefer the 20mm for most photography that isn't landscape.
Which is all to say that I do a little more photography on the GM1 and more video on the GX85, which isn't ideal because I think the GX85 is a better photography camera than the GM1 due to the stabilization. I should probably focus my EDC on the GX85 for a while. Either way, these Panny Leica M43 cameras are great for EDC.
15mm is on my list, but honestly i really enjoy shooting with the 14mm so the 15 for now is a nice-to-have :)
Agree and somehow these cameras get little love on YT because of "bad continuous AF" and the "Small Sensor"..... Upside great value for money on the used market
The gx80 is a great example of "it's more than the sum of its parts".
Indeed it outperforms in many ways :)
Yeah on the Q largest I go is 17 x 22 on the Canon pro 1000.... I do crop heavy at concerts and sports events (NFL / NBA) sometimes landscapes
Can you shoot with a camera (like Q of otherwise) in the stadium at the NFL or NBA? Thought they would be strict when it comes to cameras.
Just curious, why not the GX9?
The gx85 sold in Numbers, so it's cheap and readily available on the used market. The gx9 maybe better, but it's also much more expensive.
I have owned it twice before and keep on coming back to it
Indeed
My two issues with the CL are the battery life, as you mentioned, as well as an issue with the two top black dial covers. Both of mine fell off, one of which i lost forever on vacation. Uncharacteristic design flaw for Leica. Fortunately, the button still functions without the black cover. Otherwise, I love it. Great travel camera and excellent backup for my SL2 with shared L-mount.
Battery is really poor and I don't understand why. Oh I find the build quality very good, but I could be experiencing the same in future...hope not
The Q system is my favorite camera of all time and I’ve been fortunate to shoot with every major brand over the decades. The Q2 is great for crops in macro with the extra megs but I agree that the 60 megs on the Q3 is basically for large prints, way more than most would need. I think the Q2 is the "sweet spot” of the series. The only downside is the price of it’s battery.
Your view makes sense, the price of the Q2 batteries doesn't 😂
I had the original Q for two years. Took it traveling with me for a portion of time when I was traveling extensively. LOVED that camera... the only problem with it as you say... is that it's a "gateway drug"... after two years I kept thinking what the M experience would be like and just like that I ended up selling my Q and have been an M shooter ever since. Still lust for a Q all the time though. It's the perfect 1 camera to take everywhere for photography only, as long as you're okay with just that focal length.
I did buy an M240 in June and it is in repairs since July... So not yet there
so, which M and which lense(s) do you own now? :)
@@christophsauer2857 M10R and MP for film. Mostly use the Leica 50mm apo summicron for everything and have a 28mm Voigtlander for those shots that feel much more like the Q
Whatever the nitpickers have to say, the lens is perfect. Zoom with your feet. For me the Q is my keeper…✌️🇦🇺
Well said!
I got one from a Leica store last spring. I’m a film shooter but wanted a good digital camera. You are absolutely correct that most people don’t need 40 or 60 megapixels. As for all the other things these cameras can do, just remember that the greatest photos of the 20thC might not have even had a light meter.
Indeed in the days of film the best pictures i have seen are often half out of focus but tell a great story. I am a big fan of NYC in 70's and England in the 80's. All of those are taken on film camera with the bare bone technical features :)
@ I should have mentioned I come from film, from 1980 onward. I just found some negatives from my high school days, too. It’s a different aesthetic for sure but I shoot digital cameras like I shoot film. I rarely take more than one or two of a given scenario.
@dodahlberg as a kid in the early 80s i had a camera and found the negatives and pictures a few months ago. So much fun. But your point is very valid. With film you shoot from scarcity and with Digital you shoot form abundance. Quantity over Quality.
Just bought mine too.
Enjoy it!
Recently got my 2nd Q, which came off the production line in 2019 and is 'Like New'. You are right about the lens, it is superb and I love everything about my Q, except maybe no weather-sealing, thought it doesn't stop me going out. I use the cover of a jacket and/or umbrella here in the UK. I certainly don't need the 60mp of the Q3, or the additional file storage space, the lens is so good that any cropping still renders superb image quality for general use.
Couldn't agree more and the build quality of the Q is insane.
The images from the Q are superb. I had one for about two years. The reason why it isn't the perfect camera for 95% of us is the 28mm (slightly wider) lens. It's very hard to fill a 28mm frame with meaningful content, and of you look at the majority of images people post using their Q, there are large spaces with nothing contributing to the image.
I do agree that it takes some work to be able to the lens to work for you. That said. I got used to it quickly and use it with the 28mm, but you highlight a good point. Get closer is the main thing.
@ Use the lens that you want to use. Even well known street photographers say that 28 is a very tough lens to fill. Many use 35mm.
Buy the Fujifilm X100Vl instead and spend the rest of the money on a nice trip to take pictures……
bought it for 1800, the VI is roughly the same price, the V is still on the 1500 target or more. (Euros)
The price difference is not really an issue, the fixed lens on the Q series is superior to the lens on the x100 series. I owned an X100V and the image quality was good, sure. Take it from me Q 28mm f/1.7 is the best fixed lens out there
@@PaulTakesPhotos bet you wont even be able to tell a difference in image quality when looking at both on a macbook 16‘ Pro
Not sure where this is going but my point is the Q price wise is not far of a brand new Fujifilm x100vi. And i can say 100% that Leica 28mm is the best fixed lens out there in terms of quality. That doesn't mean the x100 series are garbage fixed lens cameras.
@@noyo1444 it’s about editing capabilities and experience. Most times fuji x100 users are leica wannabe. Been there.
I printed a large picture from Leica Q 116 and it was great and of great quality.
Thanks for sharing. Which format did you print?
@ A2
@salehtaqi 159ppi?
@@PaulTakesPhotos 300
For the same price you better buy an x100vi
Why is that?
What do you use in the months long wait for your X100 VI?
@@fogfish post comments i guess
@@fogfish That’s why I bought a Q2, as X100 VI was still back ordered.
I got the Q about two years ago, and it had been my dream photo camera for years. I still love it as much (if not more) than the day I finally got it, and carry it with me nearly everywhere! The only thing I wish for in the Q2 & Q3 is the weather-sealing, just for a bit more peace-of-mind. But not enough to pursue “upgrading”. Love my original Q, and doubt I’ll ever let it go!
Same here, the Q, aside from lack of weather sealing, is such a great clean photography experience and great colour rendering
Always start with examples
Will do that, good advice :)
95%🤔🤔🤔😂🤣😂🤣
Why is that funny?
From your review, this is NOT a camera that I want!
Glad to be off help.
I have the Q3 but I like the rendering of my old Q-P better.
In what way? The images from the Q3 have more digital look? Colours a bit off? Very curious. Thanks for sharing :)
The original 24MP sensor looks more organic and vibrant to me, less clinical perfection than the Q3. It suffers from less dynamic range of course, but is more than adequate for my needs.
That's interesting. Do you feel you would sell of your Q3 and rebuy a Q?
Thanks… just what I needed, to be lusting over another camera 😆
You can always sell your M11 and buy three Q 😂
@ oh no 😂 I already have a q2 monochrome. That’ll have to hold me over haha. Is it wrong that I want them all?
Nah the gear guy in me wants it all, the finance guy in me is a h*micidal maniac... So that keeps gear nut in his place
