This is one of my favorite movies. I read the book as a teen in the 70s after seeing the movie. My perception now, at 62 with kids and grandkids, is much different than it was then. Great movie, in my top 10 for sure.
I've seen the movie more than once, but my reaction is not typical. A cattle baron had a field hand who was not educated, had nothing, and then when he received a small piece of land the rich railed against him. The statement "we should have killed him when he was a hand, but now he's too rich to kill" really says it all. I'm a Southerner who grew with people from the big city making the same condescending remarks about my family. Blood, Sweat, and Tears song Cowboys and Indians tells the story better than most. First the child wanted to be the cowboy, but by th end of the song the little boy preferred to be the Indian. I feel the same about this movie, I would prefer to be the James Dean character.
I think we all like to root for the underdog, specially if it's portrait with such a charm! but Jett's downward spiral wasn't brought by the rival family... He pretty much brought it all upon himself with his state of mind. The only "rich vs poor" take I would agree you have is that Jett is uneducated which leads him to act the way he those, but yeah I feel deep down he had a good heart.
If I'm not mistaken ..this was James Dean's last film before the accident. I also heard that he really was drunk in the last scene. Knowing that prior to watching was insightful. JD was a great actor and we deserved more time with him! RIP Liz James Rock
Hi alrighty ru! I read that this film was released a year after his death. Thanks for the detail about him being actually drunk. Did he purposely get drunk for the scene and the director let him do so? I thought it was kind of ridiculous the part where Rock's friends keep holding onto his arms while in James is repeatedly punching him, some friends, unless that's part of the plot, friends who turned against Rock and subliminally were silent fans of James's character. I suppose before even seeing the movie that the real protagonist is James in the story. Strange to think they are all in heaven now. I suppose James being young and feeling his great notoriety couldn't deep down handle his fame. I imagine he raced dangerously around in his sports car a lot, an urge some youth have once they feel the power of driving a vehicle.
Rock and JD both got Oscar noms. She did not. I don't understand that. They were all tremendous especially as they got older in the story. She was only 23.
