I watched this great movie when I was an elementary school kid in Taiwan in 1960's, and I studied at UT-Austin for my Ph.D. from 1985 to 1992. I love Texas and still miss Texas a lot as a retired professor now. ^^

Giant was premiered here in Uruguay at the "CENSA" theatre in Montevideo , which then seated 3,500 people! It was full house of course. I was there, and the film was a huge success.
I was in the Texas Girls Choir and this was one of our standards. After more than 40 years it still is. Proud to have been an ambassador of this great Lone Star State. When I hear it, I'm ready to bet my boots and wave my Stetson.
Great music from one of the best movies ever made. It is fascinating to follow the development and changes of those characters and the State of Texas over a 30 year time span.
Excellent presentation, I appreciate your posting and sharing it. I saw the Movie when it first was released in the mid 1950's and it has been a favorite ever since, I even own the DVD, a gift from one of my children due to them knowing how much I love the Movie, they witnessed me never miss a showing on T.V. in their lives at home before marriage . A great Movie and timeless in it's presentation of that era and actually a true to life story of a Texan named ''Glen McCarthy'' [Jett Rink]
I know exactly how you feel, this movie has been one of my top 3 since 1956, and 57 years is a long time. If this song gets locked into your head, you will be a Giant fan too!!
I was born and raised in Houston,TX. This film was made in 1956 in tiny Marfa,TX. Unfortunately this great version (with lyrics) was LEFT OFF the soundtrack album! But at one time it WAS available on a 45 rpm!! THIS IS THE GIANT,LAND I LOVE!! DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!! :)
The Russian Olympic organizers played this about 10 minutes into the closing ceremony, a neat way way to honor their ex-pat Dimitri Tiomkin, and tip their hat to the U.S. I'm sad that so few people recognized it as an American compositon.
I recognized it and tried to tell my sister it was a song about Texas. Didn't know who wrote it but it makes sense that it was written by an ex Russian. Dimitri Tiomkin.
I saw this move at 8 years old. Texas, it still make heart beat !!!!!!!!! I stayed at Texas for 6 and half years to study at early days of my 30s. I am half "Texan" Texas, Texas, eyes of Texas are upon you. you cannot get out of it. . Ya, sure it does. I love Texas.! form "half Texan" in Korea.
Yap, Texas is a very attracting state, which I never realized while I stayed there. Now I truly know and believe it is. Tommy, thanks for your ment on my writing.
"The eyes of Texas are upon you all the live long day. Do not think you can escape them from night 'till early in the morn. The eyes of Texas are upon you 'till Gabriel blows his horn.
Why are they showing scenes of a lush Maryland fox hunt when singing of Yexaz? Shouldn’t they’ve showing the endless Texas plains? This is where the two gas in love while he is visiting Great to se Jimmy as Jett, though!the East to buy her horse!
What's funny about this is when lyrics are saying "This land is Texas..." at beginningt, it's showing scenes shot in Maryland(doubling for Virginia.) Most of the movie WAS actually shot in Texas.
Giant is one of d greatest movie ever filmed.Rock Hudson gave an outstanding performance and should have won d academy award.I don't know if d movie is based on a true story ,because it was strange that d director allow d lead character to lose d ending fight to a racial bigamist restaurant owner, don't u think!
What I like about Rock Hudson is he potrays his characters genuinely,in other words,he don't do like some actors who perform their roles,as if they acting about themselves. For example,Rock Hudson should have won an academy award for giant, but losing d fight to d restaurant owner who acted as a bigot and hate hispanics caused Rock not to win d award. There r certain actors who would have refused d role, because they had to lose d fight with d guy, even though they were d leading actor in d movie, and everything depends on d story.RIP Rock Hudson!
Where did you find this version of "This Then is Texas" it's not from the movie, it is from another source and it's easily one of the best I have heard. Is there anyplace I can get the album you got this from ? thanks for posting, and editing, really captures the spirit of GIANT
The Yellow Rose of Texas? She was a real person. By dallying with and distracting Santa Anna, who was besotted by her great beauty, the Yellow Rose delayed the Mexican army, thus giving Houston more time to organize. She was black by the way, the Yellow Rose a "high yellow" as "lightly colored" people used to be termed. "Rosebud" of course, just as in Citizen Kane, was a reference to a certain anatomical area of a woman's body. My Darling Clementine was about a lady of the evening who worked the mining camps. Looking up the original lyrics of these old songs can be pretty shocking.
The scenes with the locomotive weren't shot in Texas, because oil burning, not coal burning steam locomotives were used in Texas. By 1956 most of them had been replaced by diesels. I help maintain one of those Texas-Louisiana route oil burners which coincidentaly was retired the year that movie was made, placed in a New Orleans' park, then recovered, rebuilt and now operates. The one in the movie is a coal burning locomotive. The railroad companies that owned and serviced coal fields held out the longest in converting to diesel. Someone said it was shot in Virginia. That fits.
Lewis Doherty the Norfolk & Western railroad held out the longest of all the railroads. I have a book called The last steam railroad in America which is all about the Norfolk & Western railroad. Norfolk & Western dropped steam in late 1960/early 1961.
A photographer covered the end of steam there and maybe it's his book you have. There is a very famous photo he took of people in a drive in theater looking at a screen showing a jet plane, the new transportation, while a Norfolk & Southern Steam Locomotive passed by representing the "old." Because Norfolk & Western owned substantial coal resources, they wanted to keep coal.
The lyrics posted for the first verse are wrong and out of time with the music. The correct order is: Just like a sleeping giant, sprawling in the sun. In one great hand the Rio Grande In the other Galveston Forever stay with me Where oil wells laugh at angels and buzzards wheel above
Good video until " thuh i's of tx" but I just fast forward through it for many Texans don't sing this with obvious intention, seemingly as a Texan I prefer "Texas Our Texas" the state song:)
LOSE the subtitles! What earthly use are they when the lyrics are perfectly clear? All it does is hide and clutter up the gorgeous faces. Hey, we already know all about your ya-hoo Texis pride, now SHOW US the movie excerpts without the three-inch yellow letters. And while you're at it, can the military music, GEEZ.

You are absolutely correct - James Dean MADE the movie...Despite all the grandiose panoramas of the dull drought-stricken flat Texas landscape, the movie really would've been a boring dud w/o Dean. The ENTIRE movie was centered on JR (Jett Rink, later JR Ewing in tv series Dallas).

You are incorrect.
This is great, but why would you have all the scenes shot in Virginia for This Then is Texas?
