That's Entertaining! Just musicians, doing what they know to do, no visual effects, lights bombing scenario and other distractors… only the Art, the pure Art. Everybody remembers Louis, he's unique.
When I was three I first heard him in the Ed Sullivan show and fell in love with the sound of his voice and trumpet playing. He is the reason I am a trumpet player - and along with Cootie Williams Frankie Newton and Hot Lips Page why I still play today. Love his energy as an entertainer here!
They were having just the best time bringing the house down! Love Mr. Armstrong. My favorite of his is “I Wonder” but anything of his he performed (I’ve seen) was amazing.
My granda simply loved Louis Armstrong, he used to sing his songs in the 60's, and I love him too, such a great jazz musician, and his singing was awesome. Good old Louis.
I couldn’t see personnel information in the description so, for anyone interested, here’s the line-up of the All Stars for this date: Louis Armstrong, trumpet & vocals Joe Muranyi, clarinet Tyree Glenn, trombone Marty Napoleon, piano Buddy Catlett, bass Danny Barcelona, drums Jewel Brown, vocals
Thank you, Mr. Armstrong 🌹Thank you, to the lovely jazz singer that would serenade this song to me when I was a child at the Palm Inn. I'll never forget you and cherish the memory 🌟💝
What an amazing performance - not only Louis Armstrong, but the rest of the All Stars! The absolutely riveting performance - and the all too polite and civil audience, but man what a show for them! Took a bit of sleuthing and I'm definitely not sure - but what I found was at least mention of names of the rest of that fantastic band: Tyree Glenn is the trombonist/dancer/showman par excellence next to Louis Armstrong Marty Napoleon is the All Stars pianist Danny Barcelona - PLAYING the drums, not just supporting with a backbone rhythm. Buddy Catlett - bassist, we see too little of him on the video Joe Muranyi - on the clarinet. From what I could find, there was supposed to be another singer with the band for this performance as well - Jewel Brown?
The idea that 'Dolly' might symbolize a lost love or cherished dream is intriguing. The repeated refrain, "Dolly will never go away," takes on new meaning when viewed as a desperate attempt to cling to something unattainable. The contrast between the singer's exuberant performance and the underlying melancholy creates a compelling narrative. It suggests a possible defense mechanism to mask deeper emotional pain. Furthermore, interpreting the repeated line "Dolly will never go away," as a form of self-criticism or a reflection on past naivety adds an extra layer of depth to the song. Ultimately, 'Hello, Dolly' transforms from a simple joyful tune into a complex exploration of human emotion.

I think this was recorded in 1970 because around that time, Louis had lost a lot of weight and was no longer wearing his traditional All Stars gear which was a black or blue tuxedo. In 1970, he starting wearing straight neck ties instead of his usual bowties. Also in 1970, his trumpet playing wasn't so great like it was on the past years so that's another tip off.
The All Stars came to England for the last time in 1968: June 17th - 30th Batley Variety Club, July 2nd taping of two 45 minute TV shows at Shepherd's Bush Studio, live shows on July 3rd at New Victoria Theatre and on July 4th at Odeon Theatre, Hammersmith, both nights opposite Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen.
