Stephen Chow is the King of Comedy in Hong Kong films. Very slapsticky Charlie Chaplin-esque, and surreal. Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow are buddies in real life so they have similar approach with action Kung Fu. We always love his films and I’m happy that Westerners are enjoying this film.
You guys should absolutely watch Speed Racer, from The Wachowski's. It was the first film they made after The Matrix trilogy. It's incredibly fun, visually unlike anything you've ever seen, and it's very cartoonish (like the cartoon...).
Sing's line "You wanna learn? I'll teach you." has a double meaning - it's the director Stephen Chow's direct up-yours message to other Hong Kong directors at the time, as they had been shit talking his directing style for ages out of jealousy due to the popularity of his work. He never argued back, but instead used that one line in the movie to give them all the finger :)
He wouldn't have been to where he is today if it weren't for the names like Gordon Chan, Jeffrey Lau, Wong Jing and Lee Lik Chi. Those were the big name director and producers that propelled his career from a simple TVB extra to comedy stardom on the silver screen in the 90's. He was molded by their style of filmmaking. The "mo lei tau" or nonsensical style of slapstick comedy mixed with verbal humour that's often cunning, clever wordplay in HK already had its roots a decade or two before him, like the legendary Hui brothers in the 70s and 80s. Those were the "memes" that shaped his career and subsequently the life path he chose to tread on. Could you imagine another world where fate and destiny is different, and he swapped life path with Tony Leung Chiu Wai? Both were buddies looking for work as younglings and auditioned for TVB casting, but only Tony Leung got the call. He went on becoming the lead on many TV series and big films as a fantastic actor with calibre. Stephen Chow instead went on to become HK's own brand if early Jim Carrey or rather early Adam Sandler, often mocked than actually praised by the public because there were times when people were tired of the typical Wong Jing or Stephen Chow's brand of nonsensical comedy. Now imagine a reality that's swapped. Chow's the majestic fine actor instead, and Tony is the clown LMAO. But some things do not change. In this alternate universe, the very same producers and directors would shape and mold Tony Leung's career as the comedy "genius" very much as what has happened to Stephen Chow in this universe. What I'm saying is, Stephen Chow has had a metamorphosis IRL and you can see the stages in his life's works. The films in the early to mid 90s feels vastly different when he was under other producers/directors. By the late 90's he was co-directing the films he starred, and the vibe changes again. When he returned in the early 2000s onwards, now fully fledged, directing and producing on his own for international screening and global market, again the vibe of the movies feel different than the old classics. There may have been conflicts and beefs between him and his old colleagues, the very producers and directors that molded him, the film industry, entertainment industry, and even the audience and general public views on him, but at the end of the day, he is still one of us. Still human with flaws.
When you hear "brother" among two unrelated people in Asia in subtitled/translated movies, from South Korea to India, it is always meant as a respectful term for (slightly) older and elder people. Can't address as "you" or by name as it is extremely disrespectful. There was similar confusion in RRR so just saying. 😊
Yes, having learned Korean and Hangul, and currently studying Mandarin, many honorifics follow the usual title or family standards but there are nuances for older/younger and male/female relatives and friends and strangers. A lot of combinations!!
Honestly, that Fight scene starting with the Guy grabbing the lighter,to the Tailor,to the Staff Master, combined with the music brings tears to my eyes everytime I see it.
I think it's exactly the opposite of that. All of his movies I've watched which is probably more than a doze, is him being the main character, the badass, the one that can be silly and goofy but ultimately, either has the kindest heart or greatest power or ability, and he always acts as the main character. I mean name any other director in the world who stars in all their own movies as the main character, an especially one as accomplished as him. But the point is he made it work. you never once thought hes forcing himself to be the lead, he played the lead well because its his movie and you dont think other actors can really do that role as well as he did.
@@schan263 this movie is his childhood dream come true, he is so obsessed with kungfu since he was kid, thats why he spent so many screentime to visualize his own imagination of kungfu on these legendary martial arts stunt actor, from practical one to fantasies, with the help of the two action directors with different style plus, apart from that, side characters had always been a major component of his films, maybe not much screen time, but always phenomenal portrait to leave an everlasting impression among audiences. His style usually only utilising some of the common features to be found in our daily lives, but with on point dramatic presentation. not to mention his long time supporting character Ng Mang Tat who arguably constituted half of his comedies success, but sadly he didnt participated in this one, but otherwise we might not have so many remarkable side characters.
Its real fucking sad that hollywood barely makes original movies anymore. just adaptations from books and marvel comic boosk and lame ass sequels and remakes of established franchises. Its getting old and stale.
@@sparda9060 Hollywood does makes some original films but not all of them gets the box office but American audiences are now only watches Remakes, sequels and freaking superhero films.🤦
I saw this movie many years ago and I absolutely loved the sense of humor. Fun fact, a lot of the actors in this movie aren't just iconic Hong Kong actors from back in the 70's-90's, they're actual legendary martial artists some of whom trained under the same martial arts master as Jackie Chan or worked with Bruce Lee himself. The scene where the landlady appears in the backseat of the Axe Gang's car, flicks her nose and cracks her knuckles was a nod to Bruce Lee.
I’m glad you guys reacted to this!! It’s a movie that’s not meant to be taken seriously, it’s all lighthearted fun so I’m glad you guys enjoyed it. Not everything needs to be taken too deep and I think oak had a hard time with that lol
It's not fun to be making fun of different people. That's the shitty era. His movie always threat bullying as a joke. I'm chinese and i hate that i used to laugh at these cheap jokes.
Now you guys have to watch "Shaolin Soccer". It is by the same director/actor. However, b/c it is made in 2001, the CGI may be a bit dated, but still an awesome movie. Kungfu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer are consider 2 best classic action comedies in the 2000s. Side note, because Shaolin Soccer was so successful that the fans keep asking him for a sequel, so the scene, in the begining, where he step on the ball and said "no more soccer" is actually his answer. 🤣 oh and the land lady was actually a "Bond girl" in the 70s.
The Landlord was played by Yuen Wah. He was the stunt double of Bruce Lee back in the day. He is a Legend in Hong Kong cinema and a real Martial Artist. He was also in Shang Chi, the old man with bow and arrow.
That’s awesome! Idk if I remember this correctly but the woman playing the landlady went with her friend who wanted to audition for the part and they liked how she looked smoking a cigarette so they picked her instead 😆
@@chynnabartee7208 She was actually a veteran of Hong Kong cinema.. been in loads of martial arts movies. The story you refer to was just a joke in the extras on the dvd that people took literally. She is in the James Bond movie 'The Man with the Golden Gun' as one of the kung fu schoolgirls.
@@nicknewman7848 Oh wow! That’s awesome! I need to see more of her! That was a funny joke about her cause she looks like she can definitely kick butt with a cigarette in her mouth 😆
i think most of the time people tend to unconsciously underestimate how hard it is to make a proper good comedy movies that can enchanted all demographic and understood by even different culture and nationalities. imo this movie is the best example of my previous definition of good comedy movie. aside how they approach the comedic thing with over the top approach, it is still working well and funny. anyone from any background must have love this movie. people might just think it is a joking movie, due to its nature, but i think this movie need more recognition.
yeah its the international aspect that's the most difficult to replicate. the older stephen chow comedy are way more " cantonese " and you need to know language, cultural reference to truly understand the movie and the comedy and even the translation can't fully translate all the humor. i remember watching some video about stephen chow where the host was explaining the joke and a lot of it flew over my head the first time as i didn't have enough knowledge about cantonese or cultural and historical reference on china and hong kong. for this one they still had to do find some good translation for example when the Two landlord introduce themselve to the Beast. in this version its " paris and helen of troy" in my country they introduced themself as "Romeo and juliette" and in the original cantonese i think its some character from a wuxia novel.
My Dad and I went to the theaters when this first came out and it was the best atmosphere I have ever had at a movie. Everyone was laughing the entire time and it really left a mark as one of the all time best comedies!
Fun Fact: The landlady actress has played in a James Bond movie. The Man with the Golden Gun. She's one of the girls that backs Bond up in a fight, a niece of Bond's chinese contact I believe. She's also trained at the Beijing Opera alongside Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. A pretty big deal ^^
For a sec I thought this was Shaolin Soccer and got too excited lol (cuz it's the same actor) but yeah this was a great movie! I'm glad you reacted to it. I recommend Shaolin Soccer if you enjoy kungfu, soccer, and comedy! It's one of my fav movies , I enjoyed watching it a lot on tv when I was a kid!
@@RonLarhz you mean like Taika Waititi? Not all directors can even act. Stephen Chow directed the Chinese Blockbuster "The Mermaid (2016)" movie and he wasn't even in it. So False.
The most curious thing is that this film is a really funny, parodistic and comedy movie, but at the same time it can perfectly show the various steps of the elevation of the spirit in the buddhism culture, together with the various steps of the mastery of kung fu and martial arts. Even the simple fact of him jumping on the eagle has a true spiritual meaning in real life. At the end of the day, it can be considered a pretty good movie for those themes, at least for their representation. Also some of those actors are true and expert martial artists °w° Here some more info: So, in this movie there are 6 levels of Kung fu. Each level representing a state of mind and the body. The first level being the physical level. This level consists of the “twelve leg shao lin kick” “Hong jia fist” and “wu Lang ba gua staff” these are what is called “Ming jin” or “visible strength”. This is the usage of the physical strength of the body, it is also the first level of Kung fu. The second level is represented by the two blind man. This is when Kung fu is no longer only represented through the body, but also as a state of “energy” or “an jin”; this in English could be described as a strike that cannot be seen. This state of Kung fu is extremely powerful as it can kill without subject even realizing it has been killed. However, this is soon to be over shadowed by the third level of Kung fu: “Hua jin” or “mix of the strike” this is when one has mastered the first two levels of Kung fu and is able to combine the two. They are able to dissolve the attacks of the first two levels of Kung fu with ease. This is represented by the “land lord couples.” Through “Tai chi” and “shi hou gong” or “lion roar”. Though this level of Kung fu is already extremely powerful, the fourth level of Kung fu is even greater. This state of Kung fu is when the user have managed to use the mixture of energy, mastered before from the first, second, and third state and create something even further beyond. There is no name for this state in China, since people like this are generally considered to be one of the greatest masters of it’s time. This state of Kung fu is represented by “huo yun xie shen” or the “world’s top killer”. However, there is still room for even beyond this state. State 5, this is when you break the limit of your body and reach even beyond the roof of Kung fu. This is represented when the main character stepped on the eagle (the eagle of which represents the pinnacle of Kung fu). Stage five is represented through “Ru lai shen zhang” or “the Buddha palm” (the Kung fu the main character learned as a child.) But what is even further beyond this level is level 6. He didn’t show this in this movie, but in the movie after the main character has spared “Huo Yun Xie Shen”, he asks the main character what Kung fu he was using. And after hearing this, the main character calmly responds with: “you want to learn this? I can teach you.” This is when he has reached the last stage of Kung fu. Where Kung fu is longer used to just fight, but only to communicate and grow. This is known as “fan pu gui zhen” and in many Chinese sayings “jiu jiu gui yi” (after nine you have one and zero) meaning after you reach the pinnacle you return to where you have started. This is regarded as the true pinnacle state of Kung fu, and only the greatest of masters may dream of mastering it. Since it would mean to leave all of what you had behind and return to where you have started. Truly something not anyone can do.
Amazing analysis, thanks so much. I get something new out of this movie every time I see it. It's so deceptively easy to appreciate on a superficial level and remains an impeccably crafted movie at that level, but it has incredible depth that you can keep coming back to. And that foot stomping bit is hilarious.
I place this along side galaxy quest. It's a comedy that makes jokes about the tropes of its genre while at the same time being a love letter to the genre
There are TONS of homages to movies both Asian and American in this picture. The depth of references to earlier kung-fu films is astounding along with tributes to The Golden age of Hollywood. There are lines from, "Casablanca", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Gone With The Wind" and "West Side Story", as well as newer films like "The Blues Brothers", "Spiderman", "The Shining" and lots more!
I've seen this movie many times, but watching you three laugh at all these familiar gags made it like I was watching it for the first time again. Great video!
The scene where he’s trying to pick a fight from the crowd and people keep showing up not as he expected and he just goes, “…Okay, let’s try someone else,” is hilarious to me. My favorite scene.
The knife throwing scene when the knives just bounce back and stick into him was hilarious especially when his dumb mate pulls the blade out checks it , apologises for causing him pain and replaces back into his arm....never laughed so much in my life at a movie scene ....
AT the beginning when the guy got put in a barrel, I experienced a similar thing in my first judo tourney. I moved, the world went swirly, and I was over there on my back looking at the ceiling just wondering what happened. Also, best chase scene ever!
Kung Fu Hustle is one of my all time favorite movies. Stephen Chow is a comedic genius that makes hilarious heart warming movies. CJ7 never fails to make me cry.
Shaolin Soccer which came before this should be the next film you watch. You MUST watch these back to back, you will get all the references and familiar faces. And AFTER Shaolin Soccer, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Stephen Chow is an absolute gem and his crew are my no1 people on the planet, I’d actually go out and get autographs from. They are all amazing, and absolutely goated. All of them. Now, the cast of this film is absolutely STACKED. Most trivia has been mentioned but I will bring up one which I usually see is forgotten: The one musician assassin guy who fights the tailor inside his shop, he’s also a very old actor going back to the early 70s AT LEAST. He was in Jackie Chan’s first Police Story film, a crapton other films and one of the kung fu masters in Ip Man 3 The actor who played The Beast was actually also a martial arts actor from the 70s but fell out of favor with the government and his career ended there…UNTIL this film. This film put him back on the radar. In fact I saw him in some films later on (Tai Chi Zero and Tai Chi Hero)
I was shocked how much I liked this crazy movie when it first came out. It had comedy, good action, and was really heartfelt in the end. Even had an element of mystery with "Wait... Is he their son?!" at the end. Just brilliant.
If you remember the scene in the beginning when he plays with the soccer ball and then steps on it, the phrase he aggressively yells is basically “still playing soccer?” In reference to Shaolin Soccer which has gotta be next on the docket right?
I love how the movie being live action doesn't stop it from bring goofy, while still having serious and heartfelt moments. I think my favorite moment is when the MC defeats the bad guy not by killing him, but by humbling him and giving him a reason to strive for better. There are a lot of cultural references that are missed by Western audiences. I can't remember the details, but I saw somewhere that there is a reason why the good guy stepped on an eagle then met Buddha, and it has to do with the symbolic steps leading to kung fu mastery. I'll let someone more knowledgeable explain it, but it's really cool stuff.
Such an awesome movie. Movies like this can be enjoyed all over the world. Stephen Chow has such a unique style of action and comedy that easily flows between each other.
That was a 4.75-5 reaction for a 5-5 movie! It's such a great movie and we westerners don't even get half of the stuff in there. It's loaded with Chinese cultural references that go straight over our heads. I think a movie should be scored against what it tries to be and Kungfu Hustle ticks all the boxes it has to and then some! It's every film trope ever wrapped in parody but has a nice solid serious "finding yourself and love" love story wire running through it, without getting to serious. Top CGI, stunt work, (over the top) acting, choreography. It's not fair to compare it to movies like Shawshank... they are on completely different tracks. And on it's track KH is a definite 5-5! Shoalin Soccer (same director) should he on the list too.
Not just Chinese thing. Even for me as SEA this movie is one of the best asian movie 😆 the tv in here play this movie every Christmas or any Holliday..
@@RonLarhz Then your taking live and yourself waaaaay to seriously. It's a comedy everything about it meant to be over the top. If that is your complaint you shouldn't watch any movie anymore especially comedies or stand-up comedy. I'm a overweighed stereotype programmer, including the beard. Many movies make fun of that stereotype. It doesn't bother me bit... if you can't laugh about yourself you can't laugh at anything. But you can sit and sing 我爱你中国 all day long... whatever makes you happy.
Aw man, I've lost count the amount of times I've rewatched this movie. It's just amazing in every way possible. There are too many personal fave scenes of mine but I really loved the scene where the main guy reunites with the mute girl. I will always cry for that scene.
This movie was basically both a satire of and a tribute to Kung Fu movies the way "Galaxy Quest" was to Star Trek movies. Stephen Chow was the Mel Brooks of 90s Hong Kong Cinema. His other earlier works were just as outrageous and innovative and we're basically works in progress that built up his reputation as a film maker culminating into the masterpiece that is "Kung Fu Hustle".
Fun Trivia Badd Medicine The martial arts choreographer for Kung-fu Hustle is none other than the legendary Yuen Woo Ping. His martial arts choreographies and film directions are legendary. His works are Iron Monkey, Drunken Master, The Magnificent Butcher, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill film series, Jet Li's Fearless, Ip Man 3 and 4 as well as Master Z: the Ip Man legacy, and many more.
All the kung fu masters in this movie are highly respected in china and starred in a lot of traditional kung fu movies. I also believe the guy who was kind of the “main character” the genius was the writer and director as well. Basically this movie is like a love letter to kung fu movies while also poking fun at it.
This show is the perfect fusion of Kung-Fu Theater and Loony Tunes. I have treasured this show as the best of East meets West. They went out of their way to include so many references to western culture while still maintaining everything that is great about over the top Kung-Fu Theater.
I remember one time my father and I stayed up pretty late just browsing channels until we fell on kung fu hustle, it wasn’t too late into the movie and we just watched the rest and died laughing at like 1 in the morning particularly in the knife scene, that was 10 years ago good times.
this movie is a piece of art! 😂 the comedy is absoultely perfect. It's actually pretty popular here in Germany as well, it was on tv so often when I was younger. Me and my Dad spent some fun time watching this one. To this day the chase scene still almost makes me piss my pants from laughing same with the knife throwing scene.. man. I don't think I've seen a movie that comes close to this one in terms of pure ridiculousness and nonsense that's somehow still so enjoyable and the Peter Gunn theme, thank you! Whoever said it! Now I finally know what that weird dance scene in the beginning reminds me of: The Blues Brothers😂🙌🏻
yeah is basically like saying bro or sis. like when you want to buy food streets so you say "hey brother(bro) can you give me one rice noodles". calling someone or a stranger a "brother" here doesn't mean they're an actual brother, but is just a friendly way to addressed someone. calling uncle is kinda like too formal, but not to say saying uncle is not friendly but saying brother sounds more friendly. kinda hard to explain, you just need to live in asia to understand.
Oh my goodness guys. I found you via Twilight a few weeks ago and have spent more hours with you than should be legal ever since. You spend nearly every work day with me, and occupy some of my weekends too. All the Potters, LOTR, Hobbit, Hunger Games, and on and on. You're easily my favorite reaction channel (and I'm a reaction junkie). Saying all that, I almost peed myself in excitement when I saw you guys did this movie. My hubby and I absolutely adore this movie and to watch you guys experience it made my face hurt, I've been cheesing so hard. Seriously, even my teeth hurt now. Oh what a great find on a cruddy Monday!!! Thanks guys!
Nice you guys are getting into Stephen Chow, the director of this movie, I love his over the top kung fu and comedy together. He's great. Shaolin Soccer is another fun movie of his. Kung Fu Hustle was probably the first foreign film I ever watched as a kid, I don't know why I decided to watch a movie in another language, but I enjoyed it so much that I didn't mind.
In some cultures, predominantly Asian, we call each other brother and sister, aunt and uncle, or grandparents. It doesn’t mean that the person is a family member. It is a respect-giving for the person we meet. BTW, you can see a Kung Fu Hustle poster in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the landlord appeared as the old man in Ta Lo in the final battle sequence.
I've owned it for years and watch it every few months. Absolutely love this movie. I think it's humor is hysterical, and the end gets me every time. It's perfection for me.
This is one of the masterpiece in Chinese Kung Fu cinema. If you guys want to watch another Kung Fu masterpiece but at the other end of the spectrum, one with less comedy but otherworldly cinematography, I highly recommend “Hero”. It’s more along the lines of “Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger” but a a lesser known film to international viewers in my opinion.
There's a film called Bunraku, with Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, and Ron Pearlman, that has a similar action tone but far more serious. It almost feels like a graphic novel set in a post apocalyptic western world, with heavy eastern influences. Criminally underrated and even less known, but definitely up your wheel house.
That iron rings is like training devices in wushu, their purpose is to put up more weight on forearms to make hands stronger (each of these rings weights 2,5 kg),and make forearms less sensitive for incoming hostile strikes.By the way, that guy with iron rings on his forearms is not just an actor, but also a martial artist, he's practitioner of Hung Gar kung fu style, and he's already 81 year old.
Funny you mention Shang Chi, as the landlord is in that movie as well. He is the old guy archer with Akwafina. Both him and the landlady are quite legendary martial artists in Hong Kong and Chinese cinema.
I agree with most of the people saying you should also watch Shaolin Soccer. A lot of the cast here if not most is also there and if you enjoy this kind of action-comedy, you will surely love it as well. Also, if you didn't notice, the kung fu Iron rings is not the only thing related to Shang-Chi in this. The landlord is actually one of the cast of Shang-Chi as the elder in Ta Lo, and you could also see a Kung fu Hustle poster in Shang-Chi's bedroom.
There's a reason why Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy." It annoys me that Stephen Chow is still not getting more attention as a director. He's hit-and-miss, sure, but when he hits, he *_really_* hits. Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer are awesome, and The Mermaid is pretty damn fun as well. It would be so cool to see what he could do with a major Hollywood blockbuster movie. Once you get past the oddball stuff, he really has an eye for cinema. The scene at the end, with Sing and Fong, is beautiful.
This was a 5 for me. I was dying.. grasping my breath during the throwing knife and snake scene when I first saw it. I think this is my 5th time watching this and it still gets me. ROFL!
This is classic I remember our local tv would airring this movie at least like once every month and we'd still watched it every time💀 Another must watch hilarious classics : 1. Shaolin Popey 2. Ten Brothers 3. Naughty Boys & Soldiers
who did the translation work at 03:05... That is NOT her Big Brother... She is just the girlfriend of the dead mob. The word she used is "大哥", which sort of means a respectful address to the mob boss, kinda like calling him boss, or big chief. She is pandering to the mob boss for her life.
There's a lot of 'hidden' jokes in this movie most don't know... 2:08 (The cinema is so empty... "Who'd be in the film business?😂"), the Crocodile gang leader was actually a famous film director Feng Xiao Gang.
The Landlady was a 'bond girl'. The school girl protecting Roger Moore. Same Troupe and junior to Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan during their kid/teen days. The landlord was too.
I was a kid the first time I saw this movie on VHS and it was a masterpiece then and it still is today. The land lady is my fav 😂😂😂 the comedy is next level.
The Cantonese dialogue is so much funnier! 😂 I used to watch this movie all the time with my dad and it definitely helped me in becoming fluent in Cantonese. Love this movie!
SO stoked y'all hung some eyeballs on this one!!! Comedy's can be weird, after enough years or watches sometimes they become less funny and some even stop being funny after long enough (when you're laughing more on the 'inside' than out loud). Kung Fu Hustle has never ever stopped being funny at any moment for me. I grew up looking forward to the Sunday night Kung Fu marathons on my local channel. They'd play 3 old school Kung Fu films every week. Most of them were black and whites from WAY back but every now and then they'd show a more 'contemporary' color one, it's how I originally found Jet Li in Shaolin Temple LONG before we as Americans were introduced to him in Lethal Weapon 4 (which btw I was overly stoked about at the time having already seen so many of Jets films at that point) LOL !! Some of the comedy in this is as y'all said, very Wile E. Coyote-esque which is why it lends to never getting old I think. We think we've outgrown it until we find ourselves hanging out with our Inner Child while we chuckle and laugh along at it. It's silly. We all need a good dose of silly now and again. This delivers that lol! I think this movie is Masterful in its purpose. All the subtle pop culture references (you missed Ghostbusters at 27:43) that is shared across the world (cinema being one of the ties that has always connected us) is so eloquently delivered in this piece half the time you don't even realize you're seeing it, but you DO feel it. And the fighting....wooo the fighting is just a pleasure to watch! SUCH respect given to not only the art of Kung Fu by bringing alive legendary tales and feats in general, but to the History of Kung Fu cinema and all the nuances that made it as iconic as it has always been. *insert applause here* Really glad you gents enjoyed this one! When you're ready for more silly, try Kung Pow: Enter The Fist. Another one that's never stopped being funny to me! It's creative, fun and SILLY! It's also made like no other film that I can compare it to in the sense that it actually uses an entirely different film as the core story elements LOL! The wiki blurb says this: Kung Pow! Enter the Fist is a 2002 American martial arts comedy film that parodies Hong Kong action cinema. Written, directed by and starring Steve Oedekerk, it uses footage from the 1976 Hong Kong martial arts film Tiger & Crane Fists (also called Savage Killers), along with new footage shot by Oedekerk, to create an original, unrelated plot. And boy is it silly! Always nice to stop by and have a laugh with y'all! Thx for the mood shift!
The land ladys husband actually made an apperance in the movie Shang Chi as one of the villagers😊 I also never realized the amount of references in this movie and ive watched it a million times!
Fun fact, the main "fighters" are actually masters of their specific fighting styles.. If I remember correctly the only one who isn't considered master is the landlady, but she is still well versed.. EDIT: twas true when movie was released, no idea of current status
So great to see you guys embracing foreign films, most people claim they can't read the subtitles quick enough to enjoy the films, pity as there are tonnes of fantastic films out there if they were prepared to try.
Stephen chow is the best!! Glad you reacted to this! This movie is not meant to be serious but when it comes to kung fu, they delivered it perfectly...
I enjoyed your reactions! Love it...although I have watched this movie multiple times, watching it again plus your reactions still make me laugh! Thank you!
This is not only incredibly fun, but it's also probably the best written and produced martial arts movie ever. The attention to detail and love of old Cinema is incredible The man playing the Cooley is an actual Shaolin monk The old gay tailor was a star of many a 1970s Kung-Fu flick from Hong Kong The landlady was a Bond girl Even the frog style is from a classic film
The landlord was a stuntdouble for Bruce Lee. The one using long stick was an Beijing Opera master. One of the assassin brothers was also a 70s kung fu film actor.
it's 5/5, since I've seen it more than 5 times but somehow it still don't get old. I would dare say it's an art. There is soo much waaay over the top places but the heart is always there. There is actually no fault in the movie imo.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I'm so glad you did this reaction. I laughed along with it just like you guys did. I have tried to turn so many people on to this movie but they won't give it a chance. I even dressed up as the landlady for Halloween one year.
Stephen Chow. One of the funniest film maker !. The husband of the screaming lady was a stunt double for Bruce Lee, in Enter The Dragon. He doubled Bruce on the back flip :).
How did we miss this?! This was great!!!! Action was unreal. What was your first time reaction? Where does this rank on you action list?

You guys should absolutely watch Speed Racer, from The Wachowski's. It was the first film they made after The Matrix trilogy. It's incredibly fun, visually unlike anything you've ever seen, and it's very cartoonish (like the cartoon...).
Yes. If you enjoyed thus, you will enjoy Shaolin Soccer.
Wow. I never knew about that one. That's awesome!
In the 90s to 2000 when he had a film it will top the box office of HK.
I never knew that. Thanks for informing us

I'm Thai, we use "uncle/aunt" the same way as well. Or some time if you particularly close to them, even father/mother can be used as well.
Bhaiya toffee ke paise dedo na bhaiya
I made that comment on someone else's channel, and it turned into a whole discussion...😉

As a kid. I always died during that scene.
Honestly, that Fight scene starting with the Guy grabbing the lighter,to the Tailor,to the Staff Master, combined with the music brings tears to my eyes everytime I see it.
The music is this movie is insanely good
@@huskiehuskerson5300 Yeah the music ties this whole movie together, one of the best soundtracks of all time IMO
That fight and the one with The Harpists are truly beautiful scenes
The beginning scene where he says, "no more soccer!", and pops the ball is because he was also the main character in Shoalin Soccer.
I love that Stephen Chow didn't try to focus the movie on himself but on all the other characters in order to tell a good story.
@@holohulolo I am just talking about this movie and not his other movies. In this movie his supporting characters have a lot of screen time.
@@schan263 this movie is his childhood dream come true, he is so obsessed with kungfu since he was kid, thats why he spent so many screentime to visualize his own imagination of kungfu on these legendary martial arts stunt actor, from practical one to fantasies, with the help of the two action directors with different style
plus, apart from that, side characters had always been a major component of his films, maybe not much screen time, but always phenomenal portrait to leave an everlasting impression among audiences.
But he's literally the incarnation of the Buddha in this movie ._.

The landlady husband was also a stunt double for Bruce Lee
Damn, didn't know that! Makes me like this movie more!
The landlady is my favourite she is fucking awesome :)
Yes the landlady herself is an expert in martial arts
I’m glad you guys reacted to this!! It’s a movie that’s not meant to be taken seriously, it’s all lighthearted fun so I’m glad you guys enjoyed it. Not everything needs to be taken too deep and I think oak had a hard time with that lol

Shaolin Soccer too.
Why can't they make more girls like you??? Thank you!
People in reaction videos always miss the reference with the soccer ball at the beginning. 😂
SHAOLIN SOCCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What you think of Kung Fury?
Upppp
Bond girl? Fr
Yes it's true.
The knife throwing scene had me ugly-crying of laughter the first time I saw it. It is still one of my all time favourite scenes in comedy. 😄
My Dad and I went to the theaters when this first came out and it was the best atmosphere I have ever had at a movie. Everyone was laughing the entire time and it really left a mark as one of the all time best comedies!
I was definitely not expecting this 💯 I've loved this film many, many years, and I'm glad to finally see it gets it due. so underrated 🙌

@@RonLarhz Whats wrong with starring in movies you direct? People do that all the time. What about that is being a narc?
Also some of those actors are true and expert martial artists °w°
Here some more info:
So, in this movie there are 6 levels of Kung fu.
I grew up rewatching this movie on weekends. I’m so happy people are starting to give it the props it deserves!
You guys did an amazing job isolating the dialogue from the score.
😁🤜🤛
This film has directorial genius at its core and the cinematography is very impressive, especially for its time.
I grew up with this movie. Literally watched this dozens of times with my family. Easily made us laughed together. Glad u guys watched it too
Kung Fu Hustle is one of my all time favorite movies. Stephen Chow is a comedic genius that makes hilarious heart warming movies. CJ7 never fails to make me cry.
I’m so happy that you are reacting to more international films. There are tons of good films out there that you should check out.
Shaolin Soccer which came before this should be the next film you watch. You MUST watch these back to back, you will get all the references and familiar faces. And AFTER Shaolin Soccer, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Stephen Chow is an absolute gem and his crew are my no1 people on the planet, I’d actually go out and get autographs from.
He was in Jackie Chan’s first Police Story film, a crapton other films and one of the kung fu masters in Ip Man 3
The actor who played The Beast was actually also a martial arts actor from the 70s but fell out of favor with the government and his career ended there…UNTIL this film.
His movies are all comedy with a twist of heart. It's why I like his stuff a lot.

Aw man, I've lost count the amount of times I've rewatched this movie. It's just amazing in every way possible. There are too many personal fave scenes of mine but I really loved the scene where the main guy reunites with the mute girl. I will always cry for that scene.
My late Dad introduced me to this amazing movie back in 2009 Classic that I will introduce my son to🇿🇦
This movie was basically both a satire of and a tribute to Kung Fu movies the way "Galaxy Quest" was to Star Trek movies. Stephen Chow was the Mel Brooks of 90s Hong Kong Cinema. His other earlier works were just as outrageous and innovative and we're basically works in progress that built up his reputation as a film maker culminating into the masterpiece that is "Kung Fu Hustle".
Fun Trivia Badd Medicine
The martial arts choreographer for Kung-fu Hustle is none other than the legendary Yuen Woo Ping.
And his brother Yuen Cheung-yan is that Beggar.
I remember one time my father and I stayed up pretty late just browsing channels until we fell on kung fu hustle, it wasn’t too late into the movie and we just watched the rest and died laughing at like 1 in the morning particularly in the knife scene, that was 10 years ago good times.

big brother is what people call older individuals in a lot of asian cultures. Big brother, uncle, etc
yeah is basically like saying bro or sis. like when you want to buy food streets so you say "hey brother(bro) can you give me one rice noodles". calling someone or a stranger a "brother" here doesn't mean they're an actual brother, but is just a friendly way to addressed someone. calling uncle is kinda like too formal, but not to say saying uncle is not friendly but saying brother sounds more friendly. kinda hard to explain, you just need to live in asia to understand.
Boss of a gang is also called big brother.

I remember absolutely losing it at the 'wing mirror' part and that whole chase scene. So original and clever
I've owned it for years and watch it every few months. Absolutely love this movie. I think it's humor is hysterical, and the end gets me every time. It's perfection for me.
I never get tired watching this movie. I've seen this like more than ten times since I was a kid. It's a guilty pleasure.
The throwing knife part got my stomach all cramped up
The actor that played the husband landlord is also the archery master from the Ta Lo village in Shang-Chi.
Oh man this is one of my fav. movies. Reallly glad you guys did this reaction.
This is definitely one of my favorites! With the most beautiful soundtrack!
This movie actually paid homage to alot of classic films of the era.
This is one of my favorite comedies made. Still to this day it holds up and it's going on 20 years old.
I Love Kung Fu Hustle. To this day, some of those scenes still crack me up laughing. LOL!

I learned that opening axe gang dance as soon as this movie came out, haha. Tat nighttime assassin scene though is just darn cool.
Big brother is just polite way to address young man. Same in Japanese - Aniki or Oni-san.
There's a reason why Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy."
It annoys me that Stephen Chow is still not getting more attention as a director.
His version of Journey to the West was fun too

Absolutely love this movie I remember as a kid watching this movie and loving it and now as a adult I appreciate it so much more
The beast played by Xiao Long.
In the past he played in movies with Bruce Lee, also with the landlord.
I was a kid the first time I saw this movie on VHS and it was a masterpiece then and it still is today. The land lady is my fav 😂😂😂 the comedy is next level.
The landlady's husband played Aquafina's Archery mentor in Shang Chi. And there was a Kung Fu Hustle poster in Shang Chi's 'apartment'.
Such a great time watching you guys experience this movie. It's just great!
*insert applause here*
Really glad you gents enjoyed this one!
When you're ready for more silly, try Kung Pow: Enter The Fist. Another one that's never stopped being funny to me! It's creative, fun and SILLY! It's also made like no other film that I can compare it to in the sense that it actually uses an entirely different film as the core story elements LOL! The wiki blurb says this:
Kung Pow!
When we didn't have cable from time to time, I would pop this bad boy dvd in and just watch it all the time as a kid. Really a good movie!
Love, love LOVE this film! So funny & stylish. Great reaction Guys 💜 -x-
The land ladys husband actually made an apperance in the movie Shang Chi as one of the villagers😊 I also never realized the amount of references in this movie and ive watched it a million times!
One of my favorites of all time🔥💪🏽
Me and my dads movie! Forever grateful he put me onto Kung Fu cinema 🤍🙏🏼
Hell yeah 🤜🤛 this was a fun film.
@@BaddMedicine will you do shaolin soccer with same actors?
This is movie was such a treat when I saw it for the first time and it still is.
Fun fact, the main "fighters" are actually masters of their specific fighting styles.. If I remember correctly the only one who isn't considered master is the landlady, but she is still well versed..
EDIT: twas true when movie was released, no idea of current status
I really convinced the left guy sleep with his eyes opened but still managed to give a reaction with a little delay 😂😂
So great to see you guys embracing foreign films, most people claim they can't read the subtitles quick enough to enjoy the films, pity as there are tonnes of fantastic films out there if they were prepared to try.
you guys are so happy you guys laugh at everything !! 😆
The attention to detail and love of old Cinema is incredible
The man playing the Cooley is an actual Shaolin monk
The old gay tailor was a star of many a 1970s Kung-Fu flick from Hong Kong
The landlady was a Bond girl
Even the frog style is from a classic film
The landlord was a stuntdouble for Bruce Lee. The one using long stick was an Beijing Opera master. One of the assassin brothers was also a 70s kung fu film actor.
Quinn wins the reaction with The Boondock Saints reference. 😂
it's 5/5, since I've seen it more than 5 times but somehow it still don't get old.
This is such a great movie. Both Sub and Dub versions are just funny as hell.
Stephen Chow. One of the funniest film maker !.
The husband of the screaming lady was a stunt double for Bruce Lee, in Enter The Dragon. He doubled Bruce on the back flip :).
