Maria Nayler is a UK based singer who is releasing music since the early 1990’s. Besides solo hits such as “Naked & Sacred” and “Angry Skies”, Maria did a lot of collaborations with names such as Sasha, Ferry Corsten, Tilt, Kyau & Albert, Bart Claessen, Nitrous Oxide, Raz Nitzan, Tenishia, Marc et Claude and many others.
In 1996 she teamed up with the late Robert Miles to work on the track “One & One”. It became a massive success and it even peaked at the number 1 position of the charts in countries such as Belgium, Israel, Scotland, Romania and Robert’s home country Italy for example. Besides that, it was a Top 10 hit in several other countries all around the world as well.
For this week’s vlog I sat down with Maria Nayler while she was in The Netherlands for a recording session. And there I had the chance to ask her about the story behind “One & One” and more….

Robert Miles was the reason I got into trance. Maria voice was fantastic in that One & One track
His Dreamland album was the very first album I actually bought when I was young & still have it in my archives. It's also the only album to this day that is not just good but which only consists of good songs, this is like a one in a million occurence for me.

wow didn’t know it was a rock version before hand. pshh the american writers! glad robert said what is what and it became what it is! I loved that album, was one of the albums that was in my kickstart for opening more doors into the edm genre , i believe it was considered “dream” genre at the time ? well if it was or wasn’t that also created more door ways once again.. that album for sure caused ripples into everything for me relating to EDM. a beautiful track this was ! godbless her

I feel so validated hearing her say she didn't like "Children" by Robert Miles. For decades it's felt like if you say this you get outcast by all and sundry. It's the most overrated basic tune set to a beat I've ever heard. I absolutely LOVE One & One so I'm not hating on Robert Miles, I just don't like that specific track.

I will never forget the first time I heard "One & One." I was 12 years old, listening to B96 in the car on a day trip to Chicago with my parents. From the first verse, I was blinking back tears. I don't think I'd ever been so in love with a song in all my life. Thank you so much Robert and Maria for this beautiful gift to the world!

Pretty impactful tune. Channel 933 in San Diego used to play it back in 1996.
Fantastic. She seems like a lovely person. Maria was the voice of 90s progressive/dream house for me. "Be As One" is still my favourite too. The flip side "Heart of Imagination" (with BT) is one of the greatest progressive house tracks ever. What a release! Great times.
I am so looking forward to this!!! I loved this track back in 1997 and its still one of those timeless dance classics of dreamy trance... so emotional and she has an ethereal voice on this, and the Sasha track 'be as one'. Well done... would be great if you could do Olive 'you're not alone'.
Thank you! And I would love to do aone about "You're Not Alone" with Olive, but she's not active anymore in the music scene. Last time something has been posted on her socials is over 10 years ago, so it also doesn't seem she's touring, which makes the chances of an interview with her very slim. Unfortunately I do not have a travel budget for these vlogs, so I can only do interviews with people who live nearby or with artists that do visit for gigs / recording sessions etc.

Robert Miles brought us a dream trance / dream dance. Lots of his tracks are masterpieces. "One and one" is one of them still. The first time I heard this song on the radio that was something highly unusual. And it was a love at first hear. And then the famous video. It was like the journey to another world. And it was massive. Robert Miles is still with us..... he is the one! His Dreamland still exists! 🎶👍✌🏻 #oneandone

Such a wonderful and lovely interview. I enjoyed it very much. It made me a bit emotional. I love One and One and have met Maria and got my One and One CD single signed by her but I never got to meet Robert. The year Robert passed away, I was going to be in Spain and was hoping to go to Ibiza to see Robert deejay but sadly, Robert passed away and I didn't get to go to Ibiza. Thank you! And Simon is on my wish list for a long time already, but since Muzikxpress is "just" a hobby for me I do not have a travel budget for these interviews. That means I can only do interviews with people who visit The Netherlands (like the one with Maria). Unfortunately Simon hardly has gigs here in The Netherlands (where I am based). Last time Simon did play here was in 2018). Every once in a while when I have enough time and travel budget I try to visit a big European city to do some interviews there. But right now my travel budget is 0 and I also don't have time (due to work) at the moment. Simon lives in / near London, so I really hope to be able to do another London trip next year or in 2024. And of course Simon needs to say "yes" when I ask him (not every person I ask wants to be interviewed), so... not as easy as it may sound ;-) And no, I don't do online interviews, all my interviews are done in person, I'm picky haha ;-) I hope I can make it happen one day, Simon has a few tracks I would love to ask him about. Fingers crossed!

I am a Big fan of Simon Berry and Platipus. I guess (hope) Madagascar and Kaleidoscope is on you question list :) I wonder what Claudio is doing too… (Union Jack) They're so underrated, imo.
SImon's tracks still sounds so new to me and it kinda for me sounds like the origin of the "now-populor" Melodic Techno in some way. :)

Which means I can only do interviews with people that live nearby or people that visit for gigs etc. I haven't seen John on a line up here in ages, so not sure if it will ever happen..... Hopefully one day!

what an interesting story about Madonna! When I first heard Ray of Light I really thought it sounded like the dream house stuff I was hearing. Interestingly William Orbit wrote a few songs on that album.

Dat album van hem en figuren als Mark Oh, Dune, Members of Mayday, Westbam etc geluisterd toen hardcore een beetje over was in 1996-1997, trance kwam toen ook beetje op in NL. Dat album van Robert Miles stukgedraaid. Ook de clip van Children (buiten dat het een prachtige track is) en dat meisje op de achterbank, ik zat dan altijd aan mijn vkanties in Oostenrijk te denken dat je door zo'n dal rijdt en wat muziek luistert. I had Robert Miles DREAMLAND album for Australian press & Germany's WINTER EDITION got the track ONE & ONE in 2 version...
So that wasn’t the first release. I have the first release as well which doesn’t include “One & One”. The later releases include the track (as Maria explained as well).

That’s not my collection, but I have a similar one 😉 This interview was recorded in the studio / office of Raz Nitzan. Maria was here for some recordings, so a good opportunity for me to record this interview with her.

Edyta frankly was better singer and looked a lot better but the dreamy miles version was something out of the ordinary, and Maria voice was good for that dreamy version.

Edyta Górniak's version is not worse [for many people wrote that it is better than Maria's version]. If many people knew that Edyta Górniak's version was not a cover, they would probably prefer to listen to the version of this Polish singer or at least want to listen to her version at least once.
