  • We built a 3-bedroom farmhouse in the countryside of Le Marche, Italy. Here's how we managed the construction from 5000 miles away and moved in 15 months later.

    Congratulations! The result is amazing, I love it. And you've been so brave to even have started thinking about the enterprise. As far as I understand from the title, your home is in Marche (you don't need the article "le" when using the name of the region in a foreign language, as "le" is not part of its name, Marche region is just fine - sorry for the philological remark, professional bias 😁), a territory I know well enough as my parents bought their dream home there themselves when they retired (but they were closer than you, lived in Milan at the time), back in 2005. Their home is in the south of the region (province of Ascoli Piceno), on the coast, as they were dreaming of getting old with a seaview. Wish you the best for your Italian life, Paola

    • @OurBigItalianAdventure
      @OurBigItalianAdventure  7 месяцев назад

      Very perceptive question. Yes, we did, but the back of the house faces west, so the panels are on that side. The land slopes down to the west, so you can’t see them from anywhere on our property. You can from across the valley, but that’s how it goes.
      If you’d like to know more about the whole design and building process, on our website we track the whole process in detail. It ourbigitalianadventure.com. I know there are some posts about the choice and installation of the panels.

    Great story. I am also from the Chicago area and am thinking about buying a house in Italy. Never considered building but def an option. For your build out and finishing, is there a cost per sq meter you were trying to hit? I did a big addition in lake Forest once and overruns couldn’t be avoided. How’s that in Italy?

    • @OurBigItalianAdventure
      @OurBigItalianAdventure  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! We lived for years in Wilmette after the city.
      I can give you very rough figures for 2017 in Le Marche. I’m sure it varies by area and timeframe. I’d say we spent €250 to €300 per square meter. It could have been less, because we spent too much on a custom kitchen.
      The total was about 25% more than the original budget. It took us only 15 months because we had a fantastic crew. Our project manager, an American, who has lived in Italy since about 2003, really made it happen. He’s primarily a real estate agent and doesn’t do project management anymore, but if you’re considering Le Marche he can make some great referrals.
      Our website, ourbigitalianadventure.com, goes through our building process in detail.
      I hope some of this is helpful.

      I honestly don’t know the final cost. Somewhere north of €550K, including the land.
      Similarly, I don’t know specific cost items anymore. It’s been 8 years since we started building.
      I’d bet you might find a rough cost per square meter online, though I’d bet it varies wildly by region.
