The way American use knifes and forks is bizarre. All this picking up and putting down the knife and swoping hands. Looks messy and complicated
I just started watching your videos and they are a great in helping tourists understand the culture. (And I'm happy because I recognized a restaurant from my town: Lucca!) Hope you had a good time. 😊
I usually cannot finish a meal and like to eat the leftovers later. Is it proper to ask the server to wrap up uneaten food as a to-go?
Thanks so much for this. Going to Italy soon and can’t wait to soak it all in. This seems like a fantastic video as the general flow is quite different from we in the USA are used to.
Thanks! We appreciate it. Enjoy your trip. Especially the food and wine!
Why are you encouraging visitors to break Italian conventions or norma? Instead you should encourage living like a local. Try a fish dinner prepared the Italian way and don't encouraged ruining it with cheese. I have seen too many "entitled" visitors whole attitude is offensive.
Thanks for your perspective. I don’t feel we “encouraged” people to add cheese. We described and recommended what Italians do as the cultural norm, then said to ask for cheese only if you feel you need it. I’d liken it to coming to the US and eating barbecued ribs with a knife and fork. It’s generally not done, but if someone would like to it’s acceptable. It wouldn’t ruin our cultural habits. Just my thoughts.
@@OurBigItalianAdventure There is a fine line between being respectful and entitled for newbie travels. Stress embracing and experience rather than being accomodated.
You provide great advice. Thanks!
Thanks! We appreciate it.
What do you mean Alfredo fettuccini is an an American invention? It was explained by a famous chef that the dish was invented by an Italian chef for his very pregnant wife craving something creamy and butter and how the place was still on Rome across from Caesar’s grave/ statue in Rome….this was over 30 years ago I don’t if it’s still there.
Hi. We didn’t intend to claim that the original Fettuccini Alfredo, with just a simple sauce of butter and Parmigiano, was an American invention. It’s Italian. Rather that the version common in America with added cream and often chicken is not an Italian dish and a tourist should not expect that style. Sorry for the unclear message.
@ a h yes so true! In Italy butter is richer and fatter so different… incredible . Thank you for clarifying. You know how we are about our Italian cooking and food!
You did not mention pajamas. What do you wear for pj’s?
Oops! I forgot to mention them. They’re in the suitcase. Thanks for the comment!
Its good to see they have a focus on seasonal and fresh produce. Definitely alot less ultra processed foods, which explains why they probably aren't massively overweight
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. In the US our consumption of high carb processed food has turned us into a nation of blobs. Thanks for the comment!
The advice on footwear is very important. I have traveled Europe for 3 months every summer since 2016.The first trip I wore running shoes. Killed my knee from the cobblestones. Ever since I wear sneaker type shoes with type "hiking" type soles. Big difference.
Yes. With all those uneven stone streets the knees and ankles take a beating.
Anne's speaking delivery is so good, so comfortable I'm wondering if she did theater or TV in the past. And, Ed, I know that you are one heck of a raconteur late into the night.
Anne is very flattered. No past entertainment career for her. Just business. Now I’ve been known to spin a tale now and again. Little is more fun than sitting around with friends swapping a few lies.
"In Italy you'll not find gallons" because they use liters instead 😂😂😂 ...and meters, °C, kg, you know, strange things that are used everywhere. Almost. 😂 😂 O my goodness, Americans.
Lasciami spiegare. Da Wikipedia: In 1793, Thomas Jefferson requested artifacts from France that could be used to adopt the metric system in the United States, and Joseph Dombey was sent from France with a standard kilogram. Before reaching the United States, Dombey's ship was blown off course by a storm and captured by pirates, and he died in captivity on Montserrat.[10]
Hi Anne and Ed! I'm very curious to hear what you think about the construction standards in Italy compared to the US (i.e. concrete frame and brick vs timber frames and drywall). I'm italian and I've always been baffled at the idea of building a house out of combustible material... Although concrete sure is expensive and more sensitive to earthquakes. The house is beautiful. Congrats!
It’s hard to compare in some ways. Our house in Italy is definitely more solid, due to the concrete pillars and floors. Most of that was engineered in for earthquake resistance. I don’t think we have a huge fire problem in most places most of the time, LA recently being an obvious exception, though I’m not sure those houses wouldn’t have been damaged to some degree if built from concrete. (It’s likely some were given California’s earthquake code for new construction.) I expect our wooden frame construction with fire retardant materials is cheaper to build. It’s certainly faster. Just my thoughts.
This video was so informative! Thank you for the vocabulary lessons- I feel way less intimidated now!
Thanks! We appreciate it. Enjoy your trip!
👎👎👎👎👎questa non è l'Italia. Ignorante.
That is such great information. Needing to find a bathroom relatively regularly is a real thing. I have the Flush app but I didn't know about the other one. Travelling alone to Italy in March 2025 is exciting but also a bit fraught with angst about this very topic. Thank you. Margaret Australia :)
Thanks! We appreciate it. I’m sure your trip will go smoothly and you’ll have a great time. Check out our other how to videos. You may find some relevant content.
Last year we spent 6 months touring around Italy. Your video brought back many great memories! There are many producers in the Parma/Modena area which offer tours to individuals. We had a car so we booked our tours directly on the individual producers websites. All three were amazing! We visited the same balsamic producer as you did (Acetaia Cavedoni). We tasted their 162 year old balsamic, but $1000 for 3 ounces was not something we could afford!! We opted for the same purchase as you did for $100. We also visited Salumificio La Perla (Prosciutto di Parma) and 4 Madonne Caseificio (Parmigiano Reggiano). Great tastings after each tour with, of course, wine! The tours ranged from $20 to $35 per person. Love your video format. Look forward to more!
Thanks! We appreciate it. Great info! How did you ID producers who do tours? We found this Italian Days tour almost by accident and jumped at it, but your approach was certainly a good one. We didn’t get a taste of the 160. The 20 was good enough for us!
@ We researched each product category online, concentrating on tours. We compared their offerings, prices and reviews and made our choices. We lucked out and ended up enjoying each one! A car is essential.
Thanks. We usually have a car, but on the trip we did the food tour we didn’t have one. We just did 4 weeks of cities, stopping in Rome, Naples, Florence, and Bologna and doing a few day trips to Pompeii, Ercolano, Modena, Ferrara, etc. That trip was January/February, a great time to visit. (We made a video about what to travel then.) We did 7 wineries in Umbria in July. Video coming this spring. Cheers.

Thank you. Excellent. now I finally know what a Sim and Esim is thanks to you.

Seborrheic dermatitis.
Thanks, doc. 😉😉
Great video! I make up a little "fanny" pack, like one for runners, with tissues, euro coins, individually wrapped disinfectant wipes, and a tiny hand sanitizer. Then i dont have to fuss with my whole handbag in a cramped bathroom stall. We encountered a squaty toilet in Soave, the nicest restaurant in town, but that was pre-2020.
Thanks! We appreciate it. Great idea! I may steal it, if that’s ok.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences and wisdom! All of your channel content is excellent.
Thanks! We appreciate it.
Thank you!!! This video is excellent! Very informative and inspiring. I very much appreciate your videos!!!
Thanks! We appreciate it.
I am Italian and I live in Northern Italy. I often go to Central Italy for work for a few months at a time. At the end of these experiences I realize that I have understood almost nothing about that culture and their way of life. In the same way I have often traveled to the Rust Belt, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan... and I wonder what an American from Flint could understand about Florence after three days in Tuscany.
Hi. I agree with your overall point. If you’re speaking about us, we’ve been visiting Italy since 1989. We’ve been to Florence 8 times since covid, for a total of over a month. Because we want to make these videos for fellow Americans and other visitors, we try to be extra observant and we check info with our Italian friends. No doubt we make mistakes, but I hope we’re advancing tourists’ knowledge and making them feel more comfortable. I hope you didn’t have to spend too much time in Flint.😉😉
I pack this way as well, most things match with each other and can layer if needed. I pay a lot of attention to the weight of clothing because that can really make a difference. Would love to see a follow-up video if everything worked or if you would have done it differently. We're traveling for 6 weeks this April & May and i think the weather is going to be hard to predict. ❤
It’s a good approach, for sure. I did a spring packing video, if you’d like to see it. Packing Carry-on Only for 3 weeks in Italy - Late spring 2024 | Minimalist packing tips ruclips.net/video/kRjSX-XQ19U/видео.html
@OurBigItalianAdventure thank you so much! Yes, I'll give it a watch 🙂
The “ Rape” of Proserpina is also not very accurate translation. It more “ Abduction “, then “ Rape”… Hades abducted her to make his Queen, Queen of Underworld. Disappearance of Proserpina - marks beginning of Fall and Winter. Her comeback - beginning of Spring and Summer. She has to comeback to Underworld over and over. And that’s the reason for season changes, in Greek Mythology… 🙂
Thank you for that information!
I'm very happy to find this video! You are clear and accurate. Very helpful.
Grazie!
Thank you very much for sharing this information.
Grazie! It was a lot of fun to make.
How about taking some leftover food home from dinner? Say a couple slices of pizza or just if anything is left and you are full. I know portion sizes are not the same as in the US, but still what if you just order one too many dishes and want to take the leftovers home. Is that a ting in Italy, a to-go box?
It's not traditional to take a "doggy bag" but there is a new law (designed to reduce food waste) that restaurants have to accommodate you if you want a to-go box. It's taking a while to catch on, though, but don't hesitate to ask.
As always, very informative and accurate! Well done! 👍
Thanks, Mario! We appreciate it.
Mi piace così tanto l'aceto balsamico che preferisco spendere di più e magari prendere per dire, un surgelato in meno.
Mi sembra che abbia molto senso.
Please stop using your hands to talk. It takes away from your great advice..just my opinion and I realize Italians do use their hands a lot but being a commentator, it’s very distracting.
Sorry. It’s just natural, but we’ll see if we can tone it down. Thanks for the comment!
Thank you ….That is how I know my beloved Italian…..Grazie Mille
Thanks! We appreciate it.
Great video, but I’ve learned to expect nothing less!!! Bravo!!
Thanks! We appreciate it. You’re very supportive.
Hello Anne and Ed. Thanks for the video. The reason Italians do not have chicken with pasta is the same reason they do have pasta with meatballs. Meats and fish are considered a secondo, while pasta and rice are a primo piatto, with the exception of spaghetti con frutti di mare (with shellfish) which basically combines a primo with secondo, with the basic purpose of making a sauce from it. Also, two products Italians are less prone to eat/drink, compared to Americans, are chicken and milk. It is more probable that chicken is purchased at a girarrosto (place that sells pollo, patate, porchetta) instead of restaurants, especially in regions such as Abruzzi and Lazio. The two big secondo in Italy are chiefly carne (red meat) and pesce. Even veal is not common and regretfully different as it tends more to be red meat instead of white meat. Thanks and cheerios.
Good information! Thanks for sharing it.
👍
😍😍
@@OurBigItalianAdventure 😀

First Like and first comment 😊
You win! Thanks for the comment!
Actually the popular pizzeria Alice that you show on 20:30 and many other similar pizzerias like that are open all day and they are outside of tourist areas, and the advantage of such shops is that you can order “pizza al taglio “, meaning by weight,( they show on pizza to ask you how much you want) which pretty much normal sized rectangular cut pieces , and the best part is that you can order as many kinds of pizzas as you want in one order, and they never disappoint, whatever you choose is always delicious 😋
Yes. In this video we skipped pizza al taglio since we had mentioned it in a couple of earlier videos. But it is certainly a good option.
Paying for carts is common in the usa. ShopRite does it. Wow they have presliced bread? Wow. It is a supermarket. If you see something at any supermarket, no matter what country you are in, you can buy it. If you're in your own rental, you could do whatever you want. And I'm sure every supermarket is laid out different so I'm not really sure the point of this video. It seems silly to me That people would travel. Looking for the same snacks that they would find at home. Don't travel if you're going to buy the same food that you would at home. You're not ready to travel if you're going to not experience like a local food.
We think it’s interesting to visit supermarkets in different countries, almost as a tourist attraction. It’s always interesting to see the differences, even if they are small. Thanks for the comment!
Is there olive oil served with the bread? Do Italians sprinkle the olive oil on the bread, or dip the bread in olive oil poured on a plate? Thank you for the very informative video!!
No. That’s not done. It’s an American thing. Check out our video about ordering food. We talk about it there. Thanks for the comment!
@ Thank you! I just watched it! 😍 I asked mostly because of the „Godfather” scene in Sicily, where the two mob bosses, one local and one from US visiting eat bread with olive oil, and one Italian friend whom I met in Czech did that too. 😊
Now, it could be a Sicilian thing. I don’t recall seeing it there or other places, but my Sicily sample size is small. My guess is that it was popularized by Macaroni Grill in the 90s.
Consiglio cinema: Il gattopardo. Di Visconti. Il principe Fabrizio (Burt Lancaster) racconta PERCHÉ la ricchezza ha bisogno della povertà totale.
Mi sembra molto interessante. Grazie per la raccomandazione.
It not “ Zeus’s fingers”, Bernini’s sculpture . It’s Pluto or Hades, God of Underworld…
Sorry. Our mistake. Thanks for the comment!
Wonderful suggestions! I enjoy travel videos, it spurs memories of when Hubby and I scrimped and saved just to afford a "budget" USO tour to Italy in the early 80's. We couldn't even afford to eat anything but the hotel Continental Breakfast with the tour group and brought a few MRE's for sustenance to eat in shame at local parks then purchased bread, cheese and cold cuts at local shops to do the same. It gave us hilarious, special memories...and we got to eat fresh, local, tasty foods the pre-planned 'tourist' meals didn't provide. (Even if we sometimes had no idea what they were...they were yummy and we never got sick.) This was when the Italian dress code was definitely *not* 'sneakers and comfy pants' and I'm glad we tried hard to look less American. (Honestly, t*rr*rism was a high risk then and the USO warned us ahead of time how to dress more appropriate to blend in with the population for our own safety.) RE: your info about medical trip insurance...for older people I can definitely recommend that based on the experience of a family member on a South American trip. They experienced an extreme medical emergency that derailed their pre-planned trip: there were hospital expenses, unplanned hotel expenses, meal and transportation expenses and sadly ultimately funerary expenses. If you aren't a Spring Chicken, please spend the extra money and pay for what is hopefully unnecessary insurance. In case it is needed, take care to provide for emergency needs of your surviving loved ones.
It sounds like a great trip to me. Picnic lunches of local foos are great. We’ve done it many times. Thanks for the comment reinforcing our insurance point. It is important.
Excellent video; very relevant and accurate content
