Maracaibo is the second-largest city in Venezuela. Its residents face soaring inflation, widespread poverty and shortages. Under Hugo Chavez, Venezuela based its economy on oil exports. But the fall in oil prices led to a crippling economic crisis. Most people can no longer afford to buy food and the fishermen of Lake Maracaibo resort to smuggling to sell their meagre catch in neighbouring Colombia. Our reporters Matthieu Delmas and Chris Huby went to meet Maracaibo’s struggling residents.
Venezuela has some of the largest oil reserves in the world. But over the past three years, the country has suffered the worst economic crisis in South American history. After 19 years of rule by first Hugo Chavez and then his successor, Nicolas Maduro, the country is on its knees.
Chavez financed his generous social programmes thanks to the windfall from millions of petrodollars. With oil prices constantly rising, the economic cycle remained positive until his death in 2013.
    Economy in freefall
The passing of the left-wing leader, followed by the slump in oil prices, marked the end of the Chavez-led economic boom. Today, importers can no longer afford to pay for their orders in dollars, imported food has become an unaffordable luxury, while the IMF forecasts an inflation rate of 13,800% for this year. Only petrol remains affordable. For the price of a pack of flour, drivers can fill up their tank nearly 15,000 times.
Today, Venezuela is on the brink of economic collapse. Only a few upscale residential towers, with barbed wire over the walls, hint at its past glory. Faced with runaway inflation, shortages, hunger and insecurity, two million Venezuelans have already left the country, hoping to build a better future elsewhere.

This is what the US does. Are they trying to save the Venezuelans? Imposing illegal sanctions is not the way to advance the well being of the citizens. Trying repeatedly to effect a coup to overthrow the democracy is also typical US action. As in Chile, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

Venezuela is undergoing a major crisis and the government (dictatorship) is to blame without a question. My generation, young adults who were children when this all started, are suffering a great deal to be able to survive, I am a professional, an Architect graduated with honors and I had to quit my job cause what I got paid wasn't even enough to move from my home to my workplace, that's why we are seeking opportunities beyond our boarders, we have so much to give, and we would love nothing more that to give it to our country but here we are being executed, shot dead when we protest and being killed from hunger. This madness must stop and the dictator must be removed, but the army fully supports the government and is not afraid to kill people who dare to protest and rise against it. We have lost so many young valuable life's here it's sad and frustrating to say the least. So thank you so much for showing what's going on here.

One benefit of socialism is that it enables it's adherents to feel morally superior.
The state will never be able to effeciently allocate capitol. And Socialism will inevitably fail after the socialists have looted the economy.
Nordics are free market, high tax welfare states. When their citizens move to the US statistically they experience higher incomes and superior lifestyles. Because they keep more of what they earn.

Yeah, that’s what happens when people decide to be communist parasites and live off the backs of others. They all end up poor. Sometimes it’s irreversible. When you vote in liars promising free stuff like magic, you deserve what you get. Only morons believe in communism. The only reason Venezuela isn’t the richest country in the world is because it’s people are too stupid/lazy to organize their government and promote open market capitalism. They want to tear down the rich, who supply all the innovation and jobs and make new technology affordable for everyone. Those stupid losers deserve what they get. Let them be an example. Venezuela had and still has warmed hearted, jolly, nice, noble people. But the last years I lived there, I was horrified of the amount of Brian washed supporters the government amassed, all alongside increasing crime, inflation, poverty, hunger and illiteracy. I travelled in Venezuela in 1984 and it was already dis-functional country with corrupt officials, rampant crime, nasty police, failing public service, unreliable infrastructures. The easy money of oil starting in the 50 s has totally corrupted and destabilized this country. The economy is entirely to be rebuild , but it wont happen as long as Maduro is in power

Price controls destroyed the market. Not just because there was no hard currency for imports. But because there were no price mechanisms to determine how much and when it should be produced. I think price controls and a state run economy are a bad recipe in a country like Venezuela. And not even the Scandinavian socialists follow this dreadful recipe.
You cannot run the whole economy with price controls. That is why it was doomed for failure.

Venezuela has always had a lot of problems when the oil price goes low. Too dependent on oil. My father used to do business there in the 70s when the oil price was high and it was thriving. I visited in the early 90s and you could see it had gone downhill. Terrible crime rates. Saw a gunfight in the middle of Caracas. In 1996 it was even worse. The Venezuelan governments never made enough of an effort to diversify the economy and provide employment for the urban poor.
Also so much oil was wasted. 2c a litre lol for petrol. I saw people cleaning pavements with it.

this condition reminded me of my childhood, 1997-1998 the Asian financial crisis, the same as Venezuela today, but after the crisis, my country got better and better, because we learned from the crisis and kept it from happening again, keep fighting for the Venezuelan people,
don't give up, i believe there is a solution, keep strong guys ......

Venezuelans were quite happy to dispossess their rich, then their upper middle class, then their middle class; and now they are all poor except for the top socialist party members
Well suffer now, I'm not happy to see it, but apparently there is no other way for them to learn

Mt. 7.46 "This government controls us with hunger". This is exactly what Allende did to us here in Chile in 1973. When I see this TV notes about Venezuela, is like looking at the chilean nightmare of the 70´s . Really sad.

Today, the real per capita GDP of Venezuela has fallen about 50% since 2013, to roughly what it was in 1946. There has been no economic growth since WW2. This is the worst economic decline in world history, with no end in sight.

    Love from the USA 🇺🇸

    • @KeithHinch
      @KeithHinch 3 года назад

The love isn’t coming from the US. Misery is. The illegal sanctions imposed are the cause of Venezuela’s problem. The collapse of the oil price should not have decimated the country. The US preventing them from selling any oil was the cause. Take away all the income of the country and starve the people. The US once more demonstrating it is run by monsters.
