Venezuela: Humanitarian crisis and the fight for power | DW Documentary

- Venezuela is in the grip of a protracted economic, political and humanitarian crisis. Since a power struggle erupted between the country’s incumbent leader, Nicolás Maduro, and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaidó, the turmoil has deepened.
Venezuela’s border with Colombia has become a flashpoint between the two sides amid a row over shipments of humanitarian aid. February 23, 2019 was expected to bring a turnaround in the standoff. That was the day Guaidó called on his supporters to mobilize in their thousands at the Colombian border, and help carry the aid into the country -- food and medication to ease the hunger and suffering of the Venezuelan people. Everything hinged on one question: Would the military, which had so far stood fast behind President Nicolás Maduro, switch sides and let the aid in?
In his documentary, filmmaker Tuki Jencquel follows Venezuelan investigative journalist César Batiz, who accompanied a convoy given a personal send off by Guaidó from the Colombian border city of Cúcuta. For years, César Batiz has been uncovering corruption in the oil and electricity sectors, implicating not only Venezuelan government officials, but also members of the military. Analysts say corruption is largely to blame for Venezuela’s growing crisis over the last four years. Hyperinflation, shortages of food and medicine, and frequent power outages have fuelled an exodus of more than three million people from Venezuela - a once-wealthy country that holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves. Long simmering tensions finally erupted on February 23, 2019 in a showdown between government forces and the opposition at a border bridge between Colombia and Venezuela.

When fighting for your rights is all you have left death looks sweet. You'll do whatever you deem is necessary or die trying.
Yeah but nobody is dying there or losing any rights. Venezuela is not a dictatorship.
And, what are you trying to say? That Venezuelan people are starving or have no rights? If you do, then you re drinking the United States propaganda. If you want truth you won't get it from opposition, the rich whites who want their old ways back. The Chavistas are the poor, the minorities, the struggling masses. Why do you think the opposition didn't want to 5ake part in Democratic elections?
Going in the streets accomplishes nothing, I hate to say. Blockades like Mauna Kea, and strikes, are different. They put them over a barrel. But protests just go nowhere, and only cause more dissention. It's not socialism that's to blame for Venezuela. They were fine under Chavez. It was the oil prices collapse. The problem is, what do they do, now? I suggest they issue a new currency, start over with a Sweden-type economy that is less extreme. But they'll need a lot of investment capital from outside. They could use their huge oil reserves, seems like. Even with lower prices. And the world bank.

Really sad times in Venezuela.
It's truly the last days.
still wondering why UN is still not doing anything... North Korea is a different story because, well, nukes. but Venezuela really needs help.
Russia and China are allied with the Maduro regime. Russia armed the Venezuelan military when Trump threatened to step in. If anyone intervenes it would cause a lot of deaths so it is a sticky situation. But we've seen this transition in many countries and it even appears to be occurring in the US.
But we do know who set the truck on fire.
There is video of a man lighting it, throwing it, and it hitting the truck.
Canatowtu This shows how bias is the documentary. They have refused to show the audience truth with facts about this issue of burning trucks. They just portrayed the bad side of Maduro, this is double standard. The main actors are still living in the dictator’s country?
Totally agree, all the reporters had to do was to ask the crowd who started the fire so looks like they are hiding something. Yes one sided doco but 1 million in Columbia, 5 day power cuts and huge petrol queues = people not happy.
The border 'anti Maduro protestors' set it on fire...see video
Doesn't matter who set it on fire. The fact of the matter is the aid never gets into Venezuela from the US cause Venezuela never lets it in. They get it from Russia, Canada and the UK why not the US?
@@remedy1858 The fact of the matter is political aid aint welcome...anywhere aid is needed they have a process ..get it

Lmao good meme
The imperialists have no soul and will steal and plunder every chance they get just as they've done all through history. It'll take awhile but Venezuela will win out eventually and can sue in the international courts.
Venezuela did this to themselves by seizing all the privately owned firms and making themselves solely reliant on oil and imported goods.
In Frankfurt , the demonstration of PAHVA e.v, the organization aiding Venezuelan people, came across me. I and its members come from Venezuera talked each other , and they told me the country's catastrophic situations. This made me know that not only watching news like this , but also listening to Venezueran people in front of me is important
us needs to stay out of it.
We are already feeling the affects. We won't be able to avoid this once it boils over to Mexico (which has already begun)...We will have to intervene at some point. Which will be interesting.
If I lived in Venezuela and my family was starving, I would want any country to intervene. It’s easy for anyone to say, if they have food, and electricity, and sitting on their couch in comforts.
We dont want Venezuela they control you with that...

In the time of Chavez Venezuela is one of richest countries of South America!
If they were brave they wouldn't have voted for socialism and Mexico wouldn't have elected a leftist seeing whats going on in Venezuela.
@@MattBiden I can express my opinion it's possible thank you Mr Moustache !
oh in time of Chavez, oil price was high for several years, like 70-90$/ barrel. He kept selling oil and pumped the money to social programs, imported everything instead of investing in Venezuela's local producers, also he nationalised private companies. Btw, most of Venezuela oils are used to pay off its debt to Russia and China; even if US lift the sanction it won't change anything, more oil pump out, lower price it will be.
la pequenã mexicana Oh im sure Chavez was the one controlling the oil prices back then.
One thing the US War Mongering Oligarchs cannot stand is a country that has nationalized its resources and refuses to allow Rothschild banks to loot the populace.
I'm really curious why the military doesn't walk away. I'd never support a government that watches her ppl starve and suffer. No matter what, my oaths to protect, end with evil corrupt politicians
They buy the military with food and medicines, the goverment is keeping all the food and medicines for them and their families
Because the military leadership is profitting
Showdown in Venezuela is a remarkable documentary! I truly did appreciate it so much. Thanks a lot for sharing! Keep it up!
when the government regards nothing but themselves,it is time to take them down by whatever means to start everything over again.
odin king There is a much more corrupt plan than that believe me. The President and the army as well as the people are collateral damage and the desperation swirls. You watch what will happen in the next few years. Who ever accepts the USA intervention will win power and help, until it is owed. Biggest oil reserve in the world. Resources are bigger than the Saudi's. It's a matter of time. The disruption is people's reaction to hunger.
The UN needs to implement the laws that all nations have established to protect people. We all know how horrible a human being can be for greed, Venezuela needs local and international economy. Tomemos conciencia y no violencia.

Thank you for producing news on this. There has not been enough, despite Venezuela’s terribly challenging conditions which the world needs to see and understand.
Not a single word about the core factor wich has led Venezuela to this total caos: socialism.
Hey, the core factor is the economic siege...genius. Socialism is doing pretty well for Sweden and Denmark.
Corruption also plays a big role
@@padredemishijos12 The crisis started way before any sanction, siege or blockade from other countries. The first sanctions to the country or the economy appeared in January 2019. The crisis started way before that (remember the massive protests of 2014). Btw, neither Sweden nor Denmark are socialists. These countries are between the ones with most economic freedom. Economic freedom is literally opposed to socialism. They are social decmocracies: a welfare state with free economy, NOT socialism.
@@e_artz1625 That is not entirely true. The US/Saudi Arabia crashed the oil prices to punish independent countries Russia, Iran, Venezuela. Socialism reduced the poverty of Venezuela.
@@padredemishijos12
LOL. No it didn't. Socialism just threw money at the poor to make its poverty levels look good until it had no more money to keep up the facade stolen from the wealth-producing "bourgeoisie" and letting its oil infrastructure crumble and rot.

The same can be said about Venezuela's ''friends'' - Russia and China. Both countries are a little strict when it comes to human rights and when there's something they can get for free, they go for it (in this case, oil). At this point, all politics/foreign relations should be forgotten. Let the people of Venezuela decide what they want.

Can someone give us the details of the US sanction and whether it impacted the food and medicine shortage in Venezuela.
In order to do international trades esp with oil, you need to use US Dollars. But the US sanctioned Venezuela so they block them from using Dollars so in effect they can't do business with the outside world. So since Venezuela relies on imports for supplies like food and medicine and they have no monetary means to purchase them since US sanction them, this causes shortages and prices to skyrocket and your currency hyper-inflates and becomes worthless as other nation's exporters don't want it since they can't use it. Only thing Venezuela could turn to was using their gold to purchase goods but the Bank of England decides they won't release Venezuela's gold. So now they are screwed.

I would usually agree but in this case sanctions would just add fuel to Maduros argument that it is the United states and other countries are causing the crisis.

But the US really needs to stop aggravating the situation. I love DW but this is a bit one-sided. The US is more concerned with what it has to gain than in actually helping Venezuela
Sanctions to the country and the economy started on January 2019. Previous sanctions were only directed to individuals who are accused of corruption and other crimes.
