    The guitars tones Radiohead are crazy. Ed O’Brien makes some of the craziest sounds you’ve ever heard. Goes far beyond traditional electric guitar sounds in rock.

    • @Owlyross
      @Owlyross 3 года назад +4

      I think you mean Jonny Greenwood. Ed is a superb guitarist, but he tends to do the background rhythm and standard playing. Jonny is the out there solo maniac. Also does film scores. Highly talented dude

    • @ExileOnDaytonStreet
      @ExileOnDaytonStreet 3 года назад +6

      @@Owlyross I think you're waaaaaaaaay simplifying Ed's role in the band. He does A LOT of effects work with his guitar. He may have had a more traditional rhythm role in the first two albums, but that's definitely evolved from OK Computer onward (and especially starting with Kid A onward). Look at the looping work he does in the first half of Ful Stop, or the ambient noises he contributes to songs like House of Cards or Separator, or the infinite sustain effects he's used on songs like Where I End And You Begin and The National Anthem. There's still rhythm duties on songs like 2+2=5 or Myxomatosis or Bodysnatchers, but that's only a fraction of what he does. In this song, for example, he's doing traditional rhythm guitar in the heavy movements of the song, but he's also doing the high-pitched descending lines during the "What's That" chorus.
      Also, Jonny has tended away from being a "solo maniac". You don't hear a lot of traditional solos out of him, and it's hard to think of a song where he's had one after OK Computer (where he had the solo on Paranoid Android and Lucky... but I think Ed had the one on The Tourist). He's said in interviews that he's bored of that sort of guitar playing, although he obviously still does it regularly when they play older material at live concerts.

    • @Owlyross
      @Owlyross 3 года назад

      @@ExileOnDaytonStreet I absolutely agree, on more recent albums absolutely. He's a great player. I'm really more thinking about the first three albums where the roles were more defined

    It’s hard to put a label on Radiohead. They evolve with each album. OK Computer is described as the Dark Side of the Moon of the 90’s. Seen as a career killer as a third album that didn’t lean towards mainstream and went more experimental at the time. Check out Let Down, Lucky and No Surprises from OK Computer. Also, check out The Bends. The album that followed Pablo Honey (the album featuring Creep) They grew up fast from Creep and really came into their own as a unique band.

      OK Computer was the polar opposite of a career killer. It immediately launched them to world wide fame and has sold more copies than any of their other albums. It received universal acclaim by critics and was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Alternative Album at the 1997 Grammy Awards. It won Best Alternative Album.

    A few Radiohead facts. They've had thirty-three radio singles and have been nominated for over 80 music awards including 22 Grammy awards. They've sold roughly 40 million albums as of 2020 and are considered one of the most well respected bands in music by their peers.
    Besides their 9 (so far) studio albums and 1 live album, they have over 30 albums worth of B-sides and rarities. In 2004 they released a 26 disc collection of B-sides and rarities called "Towering Above the Rest" and since have made a lot more. A couple of the songs on their latest album were re-recordings of songs from that compilation. They have also done a lot of work for the film industry.

    Love your view on getting too caught up in the technicalities of "prog rock" and crazy time signatures in general. I think think those are necessary avenues to go down, necessary "phases" to go through, but like the great jazz pianist Bill Evans once said (And im paraphrasing here), "Jazz suffered when it became 'too intellectual.' Its almost like under grad school, its when your're breaking out into the world, getting introduced to many new things, always striving for the higher art or idea, and often these intellectual pursuits are the more tantalizing, but also you start to come to the realization that quite often the unleashed and unelaborated soul is a far higher art than anything these "mathists" can add to the equation of musical creativity. Sorry, didnt mean to go on that long, but it totally reminded me of that Bill Evans take. If you ever start doing any Jazz reviews, heres one, and to me is the perfect embodiment of one of the greats just gettin bare and simple, resulting in a completely transcendent piece:

    I also just wanted to say that Radiohead often sound quite a bit different on their albums as they do live so you might want to check out the album version of Paranoid Android. They like to change things up when playing live to keep things interesting. There's also the lack of audio fidelity you get with live performances that weren't recorded well.
    Understanding that copyrights get in the way of playing album versions on reaction videos, they do have some really high quality live performances that are called Radiohead: Live from the Basement. They have a lot of great songs in which they recorded for that series so if you get anymore requests for them, check to see if they performed it on Live from the Basement.
    I also just wanted to say, as a fellow fan of good music, that OK Computer is an album meant to be played through from beginning to end, and you should really experience it that way on your own time. It's, honestly, brilliant and will give you a new found respect for them.

    Radiohead aren't prog rock. They are themselves, unclassifiable. But thanks for reacting to Paranoid Android. Jonny Greenwood also writes film music, was nominated for an Oscar recently. Four things:
    1.Phil Selway (the drummer) is one of the most underrated drummers in rock history,
    2.Unlike most bassists, Colin Greenwood plays while constantly looking at the drummer. They are in constantly communication,
    3.Three of the five members of Radiohead are multi-instrumentalists. This song may be heavy on guitar, but that's because the keyboards, extra percussion, etc., are not needed, and
    4.I like to rank bands using 1980 as a measuring stick. The pre-1980 bands (Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Hendrix, etc.) are in one group and the post-1980 bands (Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pretenders, Smiths, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.). Of all of the post-1980 bands, I rank Radiohead as the #1 best band. They are brilliant on many levels.

Each album is drastically different, so you may find that Hail to the Thief might be your fav if you like progressive rock and weird time signatures. 2+2=5, there there, a wolf at the door would be a good start down that alley. A song they didn't finish for decades, constantly failing on a studio version, but it just turned out absolutely gorgeous for the wait. My overall favourite of theirs, and I've heard pretty much all their stuff. It's also refreshing when they come out with something more rock-like since they've gone a lot more electronic/minimalist in general, but they do pepper in some rock now and then. Most fans seem to prefer their current direction, but I prefer their guitarey stuff personally.

And musicians? Who knows nothing? About RH? It just beyond understanding. Maybe this is some american thing with british bands idk

    For me this song is on par with Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd rate it 9.9 but in this case you need the studio version and some context: OK computer is a concept album, and Radiohead is arguably a concept band. Out of the blue I can see why you give it an 8.1 on first listen to a live performance, but it's not really the way to go. This is complex music and a lot of it got lost in the mix.

    They have a dozen mainstream hits beyond Creep. The singer Thom Yorke is one of the most emotional singers ever. Also the electric rhythm guitarist is a huge fan of U2’s the Edge which explains the color. The Drummer is a jazz drummer who joined them into a alt band. You still hear some of his jazz blood though.
    Radiohead is all about emotion and not being amazing upon peoples opinions. Followed them almost 30 years lol.

    I hate when people say “you shouldn’t start with this song”, but... You shouldn’t start with this song. Radiohead came around during the latter part of the grunge era. Creep was a product of that time. They really found something on their sophomore album, The Bends. Check out My Iron Lung, High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees from The Bends. It will give you an idea of where they came from and how they got to Paranoid Android. Great band. They put on amazing shows. Deep catalogue of songs.

Don't get me wrong, I love The Bands, I was just listening to it this morning (Weird). There are so many amazing songs to choose from, Paranoid Android from OK Computer seemed the best due to the prog as well as it blowing my mid the first time I ever heard it. Radiohead aren't Prog in the usual sense - they never tried to be, but the label was imposed on them after this album (OK Computer) came out and got a lot of critical praise. The band themselves reject the label, but the result is a kind of "accidental prog". Some of the attitude is reminiscent of Pink Floyd (e.g. The Wall), while I listen to a song like Let Down and hear shades of 80s King Crimson.

Hell let’s even take it back to Ok Computer. Where’s the pop structure in Exit Music (For a Film)? Even Reckoner doesn’t have a pop song format. You don’t have to say they’re the most experimental band ever, but to say that most of their work sticks to a pop song format is just flat out wrong. • @gpeddino
      @gpeddino 3 года назад

      @@metrosuez7475 I see your point. But I argue that, if you asked the band itself about this, they would say that they make pop music. Yes, they explore dissonance and texture in a way that is very uncommon in mainstream music, but at the same time, pretty much all of their songs still stick to a radio-oriented duration of about 3 to 4 minutes. Many of them have verses and choruses (How To Disappear Completely, Optimistic, Knives Out, All I Need, Bodysnatchers, Little By Little, Morning Mr. Magpie, Burn The Witch, just to mention a few from 2000 on) and they avoid extended instrumental passages that are very common in prog rock. Perhaps you could say that they EXPAND on the pop format and play around with bridges and strange transitions, creating something that is very unique to them. But I still think it's very reminiscent of the "pop" (as in popular) song format.
