Fascinating to hear people with similar challenges and happy to see some of the people who have the same affinity to Sweden as I do, thank you Martin for bringing us together somehow.

I used the app learningswedish.se for an introduction to the mechanics of the language, then moved on to duolingo. Listening to Swedish vocab and movies with subtitles also really helps with learning pronunciation and vocab.

I am Swedish. My grandfather immigrated from Sweden to the US back in the late 1930s. I have never been to Sweden, but I long to visit one day. It is on my bucket list. Anyway, I live in Thonotosassa, Florida, and I am still trying to research to find some Swedish speaking folks here in the Tampa Bay area. I am 57 years old and I am learning the language now--basically just started. I self taught myself Spanish grammar back in the late 80s--too bad I didn't pursue conversational Spanish instead. I can communicate somewhat in Spanish. Swedish appears to be an easy language as well, but I am going to fight for fluency this time. Thank you to Sarah who suggested the MHZ Choice. I will check that out tonight. Thank you Mike for what you are doing.

I use duolingo, which is great for learning to speak and read and write. The only limitation of that is I have almost zero practise of hearing swedish and being able to understand it quickly when it comes from someone

That is actually the most difficult thing. Understanding speech at regular pace (or even 25%) can get brutal. My brain starts to melt going backward and forward in videos to pick out words I can identify.

I use Duolingo and Babbel. And of course Heavy Metal (when bands sing in swedish) and TV (shows that hits my interests and have subtitles).
And, obviously, swedish youtubers ;-) And sometimes I try to answer in swedish if it is possible without Google Translator. ;-)

In all honesty the best way to actually learn Swedish is moving/living in Sweden. Talking to native Swedish speakers as much as possible, try to practice every single day. Thats it

I started with Swedish about a year ago with Duolingo. Now I am taking a course through my local Swedish institute. Also I have been watching this channel and other Swedish language one, plus listening to Swedish radio stations when I can.
We were there a few years ago, and hoping to get back in the fall. My son may have an opportunity to play bandy there!

My embarrassing moment was when I told a Swede that I like different cults (kulter) instead of different cultures (kulturer).
Mitt pinsamma ögonblick var när jag sa till en svensk att jag tycker om olika kulter istället för olika kulturer. lol

I'm in Chicago learning Swedish, and aside from my awesome online teacher once a week, and being involved in the Swedish American Museum here, I use Duolingo, I listen to Radio Sweden på lätt Svenska and Swedish language songs on Spotify, and tons of Swedish film and TV - everything I can get my hands on! (with subtitles) - in the US, Amazon Prime and Netflix have some stuff, but MhZ choice has a ton, and other special subscription channels do, too. SVT is fun to try also (but without subtitles). OMG and watching Martin's videos. Very important.

I had interested in Swedish after one festival. There I met workers of Swedish centre and started volunteering. Now I want to learn this language, but I have difficulties with learning by myself ( I like that Swedish is very melodical and calm. Do you have some motivating programs? Can you help to choose a study book?

Dutch guy: "We don't have the O with double dot".... DEUR = DÖRR (Same meaning, same sound).. In fact al words with EU ending in R in Dutch, are pronounced as Ö.

It´s easier to learn Swedish if your native language is similar to Swedish, and more closely related. Like for instance the language that are closest to Swedish is Norwegian. The lower the figure, the closer the language to Swedish

This was so informative. I was once trying to learn Finnish because I had a friend who is Finnish. Then learned that most people in Finland speak Swedish so changed to Swedish. I had to make up my mind there lol. Duo lingo helps but I keep forgetting to go there. I also have links for Swedish tv stations and radio which helps with pronounciation. Now, I just need to find more time in my day to do all these things! Tack, Martin! :)

I starting trying to learn Swedish a few years ago but after some personal frustration from never having anyone to use Swedish with and saw what was happing to Sweden I said FUCK IT. Really a waist of time for someone like me who will never visit Sweden and now with everything that’s happening to Sweden forget it.
