    I saw Rick play this glorious guitar in 1978 at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, LA!

    The fashion of the late 80's and early 90's is still really cool. The leather...the boots...the hair...and the music is timeless too! ...great stuff!

      How incredible!! My dream is to meet them one day! I had fallen in love with their music since I was at least 17 years old. I remember starting to get into them in my late high school years. I am 29 years old! I have only seen Cheaptrick once back in 2013 and I plan on seeing them again come this August! Hopefully making it a second time seeing these guys play!

    I've seen these guys a bunch of times and there's no mics turned down or non-tuned guitars. Rick Neilsen sings when he wants, that's just how it is. They have fun. No one notice the 8-string bass? That's why it sounds like 2 guitars and a bass.

      A lot of those bands cite Cheap Trick as an influence, especially Smashing Pumpkins(makes sense given the Chicago thing). The grunge foundation is basically The Pixies and The Replacements(thats oversimplifying, i know), both of whom were clearly influenced by 70s power pop bands like Cheap Trick

    That is one heavy ass guitar. When I got the honor of working 2 Cheap Trick shows the second show I was the stand in between Rick's guitar tech and Rick. The tech would hand me the guitars and I would hand them to Rick as he handed a guitar back to me. When he handed me that 5 string I almost fell forward

    @kikiphallin The bottom one is fretless. Look closely. And the bass is a 12 string bass, again, look closely. 3, 3, 3, and 3 - I've actually played one once, but it was white, and had a strat shape body. Intresting sound, though. Just some useless knowledge I thought I would pass along.

      I was never into Cheap Trick, so out of curiosity: which eras would you consider the best and the worst for them?

    • @thomasbonnett4800
      @thomasbonnett4800 2 года назад +1

      @@ELEKTROSKANSEN You didn’t ask me, BUT…the albums and tours with the original four members, the absolute best. America’s Beatles (in many people’s opinions). When Tom Petersson left in the ‘80s, as silly as it might sound it was a bit like when Ace and Peter left KISS. There was something about those original four personalities that was magical. Since Petersson rejoined they’ve put out some amazing music (continuing even today). But with Bun E out of the picture and even Rick missing shows here and there, I’m starting to wonder if maybe it’s time for them to hang it up. Pains me to say it.

    • @joey325
      @joey325 Год назад

      Cheap Trick's rise and fall were meteoric in both directions. The live Budokan album propelled them into the stratosphere in 1978. So, 1978-1979 were their peak years. Then, for some reason in 1980 they started falling badly. I was at the summer blowout concert in the summer of 1980. Cheap Trick was the headline, but there was a hot new band called Journey that played before them. The final 3 bands were Black Sabbath (not with Ozzy), Journey, and the finale, Cheap Trick. When the summer blowout was planned, Cheap Trick was bigger than Journey. But by the time the actual concert came around Journey was more popular. I remember many people leaving the LA Coliseum after Journey. It was a long day ... I think the lineup was something like: Babys, Russia, Molley Hatchet, Black Sabbath, Journey, Cheap Trick. (Maybe Ambrosia was there, too, I can't recall.) By 1984, they were playing at places like MIT.

    • @joey325
      @joey325 Год назад

      I always felt the 1980's music started in 1978 with the Cars ushering in the New Wave. Techno was also coming in. There was even techno funk like Funkytown by Lipps Inc and Pop Muzik by M, hitting the airwaves. Slick rock like Toto, too. Music was turning "80's". In a good way, Cheap Trick stayed true to their ways, but that meant waiting a long time to resurface again.

    • @nicholasthomas3635
      @nicholasthomas3635 Год назад +1

      @@joey325 MTV was pushing the tastes to other bands. They did this to hard rock & Hair bands were replaced w/Grunge. Then MTV rolled out RAP & shoved most everything aside to promote that.

    @bibliac- Correction: 36 'always tuned' strings. 1st neck is a 12-string, the rest are 6 string guitars. In one of the interviews, CT guitar technician Dave said that although he hates the 5-neck monster but just the same, he does his job with a smile (hehe, doing 36 strings? I could imagine!) BTW, the CT's 5-neck guitar is the only one existing in the world. Afterall, Rick Nielsen is one helluva guitar collector.

    thatsnotreal94, there *are* strings on the bottom neck (visible around 0:15 , when Rick strikes the first chord --- watch for the shimmer as he moves back), but no fret-markers, and (get this!) no *frets* ! You could really get some trippy sounds with that, like a "six-string violin". I've never seen a clip where he plays that neck, but, if he did, maybe he'd "pull a Jimmy Page" and play it with a violin-bow.
