Schwartz is definitely the iconic smoked meat of Montreal. It's the one you'll find listed in guide books and such. I’d never heard of Snowdon Deli until now.
Snowdon Deli has always been my favourite smoked meat in Montreal. Moist, flavourful and made how you like it. Great service and ambiance. I often buy the hot smoked meat, rye bread and all the trimmings separately for poker night so my buddies can build their own sandwiches. Nothing against the other guys but Snowdon has always been my personal favourite ...all the best...Chris
I've lived in Montreal all my life (50+ yrs) and I would have to say that yes, Montreal has the best smoked meat around. Now which is is the best place depends on who you're speaking to. Everyone has their favorite place. Snowdon, Smoke Meat Pete, Dunn's, Ruebens and Schwartz, are all great. For me, smoked meat must be cut medium-fat. NOT fat mixed in with lean but that cut of the brisket where there is marbling throughout the meat..... um.. now I'm off to get some at my favorite place!
My wife and I have been to Schwartz's Deli two weeks ago when we were on our honeymoon roadtrip through Canada. We really enjoyed the Smoked Meat and did not find any smoked meat as good as Schwartzs' on the rest of our trip. Next time when we are in Montreal, we will give Lucas a spin!
Really good question. That's the place I always get recommended even as a montrealer so this deli I've never heared about really surprised me. I'm not a smoke meat fan, mind you :) Might go check it out, along with Smoke Meat Pete...
Watching this during my Montreal trip. I tried Schwartz's smoked meat sandwich, it was pretty awesome. Had Snowdon's smoked meat sandwich today. I prefer the latter too. They're both great but Snowdon's was just perfect. They both cost about the same, $15 CAD after taxes. Snowdon's was probably a little smaller but I could be wrong.
So great to see Snowdon get some more recognition for their amazing smoked meat! Hands down best I've had in Mtl! All those who believe Schwartz's is the best NEED to try Snowdon and see their minds changed :)
Finallllllly. An honest video about best smoked meat in Montréal. Dont know if youve been to Wilenskys yet but its a must go to and has such a storied history and oh the sandwiches and old fashion sodas!!! Awesome vids!!!
Lucas, you're breaking my heart! I have watched all of Dining on a Dime but have never been to a city that you've featured (I'm in Sydney, Australia). I just returned from a holiday in Montreal when this season began and I never even heard of Snowdon's Deli when I was there. I ate at Schwartz's and Reubens and enjoyed both, but I know I would have loved this place. Thankfully I did get to the other places you have reviewed so far, but this is still heartbreaking.
I live in Montreal and have been to this place (as well as Schwartz), many times. They have much more variety in terms of home made food (e.g., egg plant, cherry strudel, smoked fish, slaw). I'm not a big meat eater (therefore not a smoked meat connoisseur), but will often go to make of meal of the meatless items, because of the convenience, price and quality. If you are visiting Montreal and would like the smoke meat experience, I recommend this hands down over Schwartz. It has reasonable prices, you won't have to stand on the street waiting in line, and the customer service is way better. Try the old fashioned if you want bold, traditional flavors. They offer fast counter service for take out as well. It is only about 10 minutes walk from Snowdown metro.
lol super true!!!! I love Schwartz's smoked meat but the line up and all is super annoying. But Snowdon is fantastic. there is a line up sometimes..... but alot of the locals seem to go there. i'm not a local... living on the west island, but i do pass through it after work each day. the meat and food is fantastaic, service is friendsly. never a problem. so it must be true that local montrealers do congregate to snowden intead to over schwartz. lol !!!
This Deli Snowdon looks fabulous! I havechad Schwartz and it is good, but full of tourists. I lovectheclocal, family flair here, andcthe extras like Knishes, blitzes and eggplant. I was a camp counselor for 5 summers in Maine at a private Jewish camp. Visiting the kids and their families in the off season exposed me to a lot of great Jewish foods - many of which I never had before. I love lox on my bagels, blinyzes and great deli meats on soft Rye bread. I will have to make a note of this for my next trip - though "Snow Coast" is not motivating! LOL! Montreal is such a great city - full of so many ethnic surprises!
I HAVEN'T HAD A GOOD MONTREAL SMOKED SANDWICH SINCE LAST FALL AND WILL GET ONE TOMORROW AT "CHENOY'S" IN POINTE CLAIRE. ALL REAL MONTREAL SMOKED MEAT IS FANTASTIC HERE!!
Ben's smoked meat is the first smoked meat house (1908) in Montreal at least to my knowledge. Sadly Jean Kravitz closed it down... You can check McCord Museum for more on the history. ( corrected wordins)
Most Montreals will tell you Schwart's isn't there favourite... Its the most iconic for sure. However its a dryer usually chipped texture smoked meat. Snowdon Deli and Lesters are where its at
some precision, cote des neige is not in south west montreal. but the best smoked meat is quebec smoked meat in point st charles... but that not a restaurent, you buy it and steam it at home... only cash
Lucas is right. I just had the sandwich at Schwarz's and it was pedestian at best. The flavour was bland unless you got some of the fat in the bite and the meat was dry to boot. I got it from the take-out store portion of the store btw so i dont know if the main sitdown part is any different but it shouldnt be. Everything Lucas said about Schwarz's was on point. I wish I had known about Snowdons.
OK, so plenty of comments about where Cotes-des-Neiges is by cardinal points, but nothing on the mistranslation. It is "hill of snow", not coast of snow.
Schwartz is overrated. Dry smoked meat and they can’t cut the meat properly. Déli Snowdon is a very good place to go eat a good smoked meat and also Lesters Deli on Bernard Ave in Outremont area.
So, now I know where the word for sausage comes in Romanian from: Jewish! We call our sausages Carnatz - :-D Also the eggplant salad is a staple of Romanian cuisine and my mom does it just like in the vid. She adds some crushed garlic to it for a little kick but some people prefer onions.
@@recoil53 This smoked meat is only something you can find in Montreal or surrounding areas. nobody makes it like that, it's truly unique. the way it's aged, spiced, smoked and steamed.

recoil53 hopefully you get to try out a smoked meat in Montreal sometime, it’s truly a fascinating sandwich, such great flavour, lucky I live here. I never get tired of smoked meat.
M Jones ... if you think Schwartz is hand down the best, you really don’t know about smoked meat. Enjoy your tourist trap smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz.
Man, bold claim saying Snowdon Deli's the best. I mean, it's up there, but I prefer Lester's myself. Schwartz's is up there but overrated, The Main does it well from what I hear, and there's Le Roi du Smoked Meat and Jarry Smoked Meat and Smoked Meat Pete's too. But, hey, you can't really go wrong with a Smoked Meat sandiwich.
Isn't Schwartz Deli owned by a group headed by Celine Dion? Changed hands a few times. Didn't she at one point own the Nickels chain of restaurants? btw Schwartz's will FedEx their smoked meat anywhere in Canada. Not sure about the US.

I live in Montreal, loving all these videos! We have great food! Eater, you will get some fights about Snowdon Deli being the BEST smoked meat...not sure about them being the best. I find it dry (even the fatty cut) and not enough "kick" in the spices. I prefer Smoke Meat Pete wayyyy out in the West of Montreal.
Yes, that's the one, just off the island of Montreal. If you don't have a car, you have to take a commuter train to it, it's worth the trip though!!! Live Jazz on weekends too.
I know Hart! I can’t believe he is an owner of Snowden Deli now! Way to go dude! If you see this, I’m Glad you’re doing well. It’s Jarred btw!

Bring back Dining on a Dime! I have really missed this series!
Yay! This is the first one of these that's a place I've actually been! It's about a 15-minute walk from my apartment and it's DELICIOUS!

Montreal is a fantastic city. Thanks for another great review!
It won't remain nice if ignoramus Trudeau keeps bringing in Muslims with their evil religion.
+Robert William mate.... lmfao
I'm born and raised in Montreal and it's about time people learned about this place. A true gem.
not Schwartz? interesting.
Go to Smoke Meat Pete.
Hell no. It is good but Deli Snowdon is the best.

I need to try this place! Lester's deli too! I've already reviewed Shwartzs and a number of other Montreal staples🍜👀👌
have you tried smoke meat pete? its not montreal its a bit more west about 30 mins from the city hands down best smoked meat
Lester's has been my go too for years. The carrot cake is classic and I'm a major fan of fatty cut

Hi Lucus
its genuinely one of the best food scenes on the planet
I use to love Shwartzs, but it disappointed me the last times I went there. Time to try a new place like this one.
how disappointed ? its the same .. you took a lean sandwich ?
The best smoked meat sandwich is found at the Main Restaurant across the street from Schwartz. Tourists eat at Schwartz's...locals eat at the Main.
Why is Lucas not in the thumb-pic?! Mini-revolt!
He's the only host who looks more delicious than a smoked meat sandwich!
Le Roi du Smoke Meat is also amazing!
C'est sur la rue Saint-Hubert?

Centre Street Deli in Thornhill, ON had its roots from Snowden. Both are a lot better than Kaplinsky's that skimp on the meat.
Côte-des-Neiges is north-west of downtown btw...
I went over there this year and it was PACKED! I wonder if this video was the culprit?
Live in Montreal. Pretty sure cote-des-neige is *north west of downtown montreal
Forget Schwartz, Reuben's or Lester's, this is the place to go at!!!
edit: and go to Smoke meat pete at l'ile perrot
