If you wish to point out individuals as representation of the whole, Then I could present the same thing. Men like Charlemagne, patre europae, worked hand in hand with the pope and often used the clergy as a way to administrate his empire, via the missi domini. and jumpstarted one of europe's educational and scholastical revolutions ie the Carolingian renaissance. Heck most States in looked to the clergy to administer state affairs, a prime example is moore or the celebrated cardinal woolsey. Louis the pious wrestled control over northern spain out of the hands of the ummayads and laid the ground work for the reconquista with the pope. You have King Sobienki who's christian league, which was created under the guidance of the pope, defeated the Turkish armies and saved Europe. And the popes weren't evil men, Galileo's patron was pope urban the eight and it was his connection with the pope that gave his theory (which was father Copernicus' Theory of Heliocentricity, yes Copernicus was a member of the clergy) alot of credibility in rome when the tycho brahe's universal system was dominant. Even when he was condemned by the inquisition, he was put into HOUSE ARREST in a LAVISH ITALIAN PAPAL VILLA GIFTED BY THE POPE HIMSELF. Pope Clement, who reign as the holy father during the English reformation prevented Catherine's and Henry's Annulment on both grounds of christian and moral honor (ie you don't annul a marraige just because you can't make an male child leading to a cannocial impediment). The practice of Clerical Celibacy was a measure for the Catholic Church to ensure that their priests were never in the business of inheritences and could not pass over land to children which could then use it for self-gain. There were many measures like these which are self limiting to the church's power. And the church, the clergy, and the institutions of learning they have established shaped the modern world, it is clear from the historical record that the church has been probably the largest single and longest-term patron of science in history, that many contributors to the Scientific Revolution were themselves Christian, and that several Christian institutions and perspectives were key influences upon the rise of modern science. to the Monastery of Lindisfaire and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Rome, to the early church fathers to the Jesuits, to men and women like Grosseteste, Hildegard, Buridan, Oresme, Nicholas of Cusa, Bunfels, Bacon, Copernicus, Galileo, Pascal, Lobkowitz, Boyle, Redi, Newton, Kepler. Leibniz, Leeuwenhook, albretch von Hailer, Euler, Laviosier, Lemaitre, Mendel, Agnesi, Volta, Bernoulli, Ampere, Cuvier, Faraday, Babbage, Maxwell, Joule, and many many more examples leading to advancements and sometimes establishments of new concepts and ideas like in Geology, Botany, Optics, Astronomy, Calculus, Logarithms, Combinatorics, Trigonometry, Statistics, Computational Algorithms, Computers, Geometry, Chemistry, Biology, Micro Biology, Physiology, Parasitology, Genetics, Physics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Scientific Natural History, Scientific method, etc And that's ignoring christian charity and/ or not celebrating christian might. Detractors like you tend to ignore so much of history or look with a horridly unfair bias so that you can ascribe a label of "evil" to the church rather than looking at it holistically.

Aaron MacDonald-Hall I have Witcher 3. In a couple of ways the PS3 is better than the PS4. You can save music to your hard drive. Save pictures. The xmb had more of a community feel to it. All those digital downloads from the PlayStation Store that I made on the PS3 aren't available on my PS4, but if I bought another PS3 it would be in my download catalog. One thing I can say that I like about digital.
degurkin So? What information did it provide other than there is a tall, bald guy who may be a Witcher, that killed a king on his boat pretty easily. you don't know if he escaped, who he is, what his motives are or who the king was or where it took place, you only learn that while playing.
Killerbee McTitties In that opening cinematic to the game you see a tall bald guy that definitly did cast some sort of magic to protect himself from his own vials effect murdering a king said guy has a scar on his chin which you can see because glorious slow-motion Said person escaped the ship at the end of the cinematic and based on his combat prowess and the plan itself it is safe to assume he made it out of there after the screen went black You as the player can make the connection that random suspicious cleric guy is in fact said murderiser based on "subtle hints" which are covered all over that scene (with the final clue beeing the fact he wasn't mute which Geralt picked up on which is when Geralt knew a kingslayer is in the building) I think you personally wouldn't make a great witness for police questioning
I've only played the witcher 3. This is my first exposure to Foltest as a character. Comparing him to Radovid and Emhyr he seems rather nice. I can see why you'd want revenge on Letho for killing him.
Vospader21 if you play witcher 2, you'll be surprised to how level headed and politically savvy radovid is,if you play witcher 1, you will be more surprised that this was the guy who single handedly constructed the redanian/temerian alliance in his age of 15. Witcher 3 was really a character assasination for radovid. They needed a bad guy so they ruined radovid and the justification? He went mad? At the age of 20? Lols.
+kwazooplayingguardsman Not only they ruined Radovid but they made Nilfgaardians the good guys. Fuckers who started all that shit almost become saints in TW3...
@@kwazooplayingguardsman5615 The age of 17-20 is the most common for mental disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to emerge. Makes full sense.
even though you know so little about foltest through the games, it's pretty damn clear he's the best king of all of the northern monarchs. He's not a good man by any means, but he's also not some corrupt greedy monster. And the fact that he truly cares for his children really touches you. And when i first saw this scene, i just knew that the whole of temaria was about to go down the shitter. I swear, the best kings are always assassinated or executed or killed in battle in fantasy books/movies/shows (Theoden;king of rohan from LOTR, ned stark from GoT, foltest from the witcher..it's just not fair ;_;).
Anyone notice that Letho let Foltest have some time with his children and let him bask in the glory of his victory before killing him. Only really killing him when the children left the room. I love little details like that to show how he’s not a complete monster.
+mucus CDPR does a really good job on action cinematics. see the battle of kaer morhen sequence of the witcher 3 also. it was a treat to watch all those witchers kick some ass. finally got to see Eskel (the only one that can compare to Geralt in sword skill) in his full ability.
+PemaMendez ペマ the new cutscenes in Hearts of Stone are insane aswell, CDPR is constantly improving, unlike many other companies. Easily my favourite devs :)
That is true, he didn't know she was watching, but SHE could have said something. Which begs the question... why didn't she? Probably because she's a 6 year old who was just scarred for life :| Or it could be because she's a dick. But probably the former.
aight, how about this - there's no blood on witchers sword; Sword aint the best tool to slice the neck; What about the monk cloak lying on the floor; Would the Witcher just remain there near the body if he was the true assassin? The logical assumption here is that evereone knew that Geralt wasn't the assassin, and his inprisonment was a political thing.
4:20 The best part about this, is how Foltest KNEW he was going to die, once he saw Geralt running towards him with a sword. But he still accepted his fate and died like a true king - proudly and bravely.
Know this is old as fuck but, I always felt like due to positioning perhaps Foltest never saw Letho preparing behind him, to me he almost seems to think Geralt may have betrayed him, despite how cool Foltest is, he was paranoid… Though I could just be assuming, the framing makes it hard to tell whether letho is deliberately keeping himself out of Foltest’s sight after he draws his dagger.
So do I. LOL. I mean I don't remember exactly. But, in the game we know that the mutation for Geralt didn't run as expected. So it didn't wipe his emotion thoroughly. I forget whether he said it himself or it come from the in-game book.
first step: pause the video at 3:55, then mute it. second step: open this Audiomachine - Worlds Collide and stop at 0:00, then switch to witcher video again. third step: start witcher video first, then start second video. last step: enjoy pure epicness!
if Foltest hadn't gotten killed, Temeria and Aedirn probably would not have been conquered by Nilfgaard. i guess playing dirty and hiring a witcher to assassinate all northern kings is a tactic the northern kingdoms should have used against Nilfgaard
There is so much actual cinematic craftmanship in this scene alone along with the conflict of Geralt not beeing able to leave with Triss hence now beeing framed for kingsmurder instead. Anais saw everything but he had no clue about that and this whole ordeal is put together with such great camerawork and fitting music in a way that there is absolutely no need for explaining anything to the viewer. All this to introduce the main villian of the game, which later on even reaveals to have his good reasons and isnt all black and white either. Really talented people wrote and crafted this.
First played this game last year and am thinking of going back to it. I loved the detail and character of King Foltest right from the start so was not expecting to see such an epic scene. I did like the style of the King's clothing as well.
The thing that I liked the most about Witcher 2 is that some scenes are so cinematic. Seriously, this scene could be in a big movie and still be so good. The score, the emotions, the characters, everything is perfect here. As much as I love TW3, none of the cutscenes there were as good as this one. Still, the best game, though.
i used to unequip all of Geralr's armor before triggering this cutscene... it was hilarious to see him running towards foltest in slow motion, wearing nothing but his undies and swords lol
At the first time I played witcher 2, in this part, I was thinking that the blind monk would be the assassin, and it was really true. That music man... it's from the main menu
fuck that! How about the size of that fucking man for starters! A giant blind monk with hands the size of a cantaloupe???? How can one not even be slighly suspicious about his size?
I was very saddened by this scene. Foltest was one of the best characters in the entire series, as well as the best king ever in the entire fantasy genre. In the novels, you read about him, and you think "Heh, he's a pretty funny and good king." In the first Witcher game, you meet him and you think "Damn, he's awesome!" And then, in Witcher 2, he's just all of these things above. Even the new players have the time at the beginning to grow fond of him enough to be saddened by his death.
Guards are a little stupid.... "It's Him ! He killed the King !" "With what weapon ?" "The one you have on hands !" "There is no blood on my sword...." "Oh...."
He could have thrown the knife out the window but heard the guards coming so he drew out his sword. Also the guards propably got a narrow sight after they saw their king in a poddle of blood on the ground and saw a man with his sword out at the scene and novody else.
I'd played witcher 3 before 2 and my only exposure to Foltest was Gwent but honestly after playing 2 I can say I'd follow Foltest into combat happily he's one of three good kings alongside Radovid and Emhyr and his death was actually quite sad.
It is these moments you realise that the game you played is something more...much more. From this moment you know that North is about to fall, and that the game is more like the real world outside-where Hope is lost by the ones that have lost their's hope too, we CAN say that Letho is the ,,bad'' guy, we can even say and should say that ,,Emhyr the Dick of the Witcher world'' is the most evil guy ever...and that IS why i so much love witcher 1, 2 and 3-no one is good or bad, just being themselfs and doing what they must....just like real world
Every time I see this there's a dumb part of me that just hopes it will turn out different. Foltest was a good man, and not a bad king. He was part of a web that was being dismantled for reasons one can understand if not condone. But he was just and honorable. Ugh this scene kicks me in the stomach
Out of all the games I have played this is the best cut scene I have watched. There are so many little things in this scene that make it so incredibly well made: the facial expressions, the environment, the body language and so on.
“Oh yeah we found him standing over the body of the king, who had clearly had his throat slit, holding a sword with no blood on it. Clearly this makes him our killer.”
People hate letho for what he did but i understood why he did it and the witcher series is more about the grey not just the black and white so i don't dislike him for what he did even though it was still wrong
Fuck Letho, thank God I killed the bastard in my playthrough. Foltest, God damn it mate. Even though we had so little time together, it was unforgettably epic.
I remember when in my first playthrough of Witcher 2(first time I ever played a Witcher game) this scene just blew me away! Now I'm in love with all the games and the whole universe and the lore! Witcher 2 was easily one of the best games I ever played, and Witcher 3 was incredible as well. I really hope they would do a TV-series like GoT based around The Witcher's story, would be amazing! :)
TheSkipRow Gaming Really? Is it being made an actual professional studio? The last series/movie based on The Witcher(The Hexer, polish series or something) was pretty horrendous. If so, I really hope it turns out good! This whole universe, characters, lore etc has sooo much potential!
Foltest: Geralt wait here, you might scare them. *~Foltest walks all alone towards Letho~* Letho: Aaah... Thanks be to the gods. *My prayers are answered.*
I felt genuinely sad during this scene. Foltest was a total chill guy and probably ballin' to hang out with. I was looking forward to helping him out and bro--ing it up.
After playing Witcher 3, I finally decided to give 2 a shot because I figured as great as 3 was, 2 couldn’t be far off. Love it so far. Just finished the prologue.
The Witcher III was not a masterpiece by chance. The people behind these games love gaming as much as they respect and appreciate their customers. And they only made masterpieces!

CD Projekt Red really did right by implenting those items.
BrUSomania Only problem is that all 3 get replaced by stronger stuff very quickly. Hell, before this scene, i already had a sword stronger than Gwalhir/Mahakan Rune Blade.

wilji1090 I know right!? But on a more bitter note... Look where it got him.
wilji1090 royalty and church never really got along in the Middle Ages, mostly because both were always in a quest to undermine the power of the other
James.T .Adams well, thats not particularly true, in most part, the church and the state cooperate well together.
Leibniz, Leeuwenhook, albretch von Hailer, Euler, Laviosier, Lemaitre, Mendel, Agnesi, Volta, Bernoulli, Ampere, Cuvier, Faraday, Babbage, Maxwell, Joule, and many many more examples leading to advancements and sometimes establishments of new concepts and ideas like in Geology, Botany, Optics, Astronomy, Calculus, Logarithms, Combinatorics, Trigonometry, Statistics, Computational Algorithms, Computers, Geometry, Chemistry, Biology, Micro Biology, Physiology, Parasitology, Genetics, Physics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Scientific Natural History, Scientific method, etc
And that's ignoring christian charity and/ or not celebrating christian might. Detractors like you tend to ignore so much of history or look with a horridly unfair bias so that you can ascribe a label of "evil" to the church rather than looking at it holistically.
@Sarincrow well, I also stated a bunch of facts so that readers would get a better and more complete view of what the church is.

you should have figured with the mysterious tall blind man that has the same chin scar as Letho
degurkin you didn't know about Letho at this point
Killerbee McTitties
But there is that intro sequence
Geralt doesn't know but that doesn't mean you should be suprised ya doofus
degurkin So? What information did it provide other than there is a tall, bald guy who may be a Witcher, that killed a king on his boat pretty easily. you don't know if he escaped, who he is, what his motives are or who the king was or where it took place, you only learn that while playing.
Killerbee McTitties
In that opening cinematic to the game you see a tall bald guy that definitly did cast some sort of magic to protect himself from his own vials effect murdering a king
said guy has a scar on his chin which you can see because glorious slow-motion
Said person escaped the ship at the end of the cinematic and based on his combat prowess and the plan itself it is safe to assume he made it out of there after the screen went black
You as the player can make the connection that random suspicious cleric guy is in fact said murderiser based on "subtle hints" which are covered all over that scene (with the final clue beeing the fact he wasn't mute which Geralt picked up on which is when Geralt knew a kingslayer is in the building)
I think you personally wouldn't make a great witness for police questioning
Lols.

even though you know so little about foltest through the games, it's pretty damn clear he's the best king of all of the northern monarchs.
The zebra's mating call is a whistle Meve is a pretty solid Queen, though we never see her in the game. Radovid whilst a bastard is a genius.

don't forget King Fingolfin :(
Not ned stark you mean rob stark rip king in the north fuuuck

Anyone notice that Letho let Foltest have some time with his children and let him bask in the glory of his victory before killing him. Only really killing him when the children left the room. I love little details like that to show how he’s not a complete monster.

Geralt can just end the whole affiar with just one sentence "I didn't do it! ask the girl!"
how?
That is true, he didn't know she was watching, but SHE could have said something. Which begs the question... why didn't she? Probably because she's a 6 year old who was just scarred for life :|
Or it could be because she's a dick. But probably the former.
He knows later that actually Anais said that he didn't killed Foltest.
But Geralt is witcher, and he can sense her

Sword aint the best tool to slice the neck;
What about the monk cloak lying on the floor;
Would the Witcher just remain there near the body if he was the true assassin?
The logical assumption here is that evereone knew that Geralt wasn't the assassin, and his inprisonment was a political thing.
4:20 The best part about this, is how Foltest KNEW he was going to die, once he saw Geralt running towards him with a sword. But he still accepted his fate and died like a true king - proudly and bravely.

The face Foltest gave Geralt is hilarious.
He’s like: Great job, *”bodyguard.”*
4:11 Geralt should throw the sword on Letho as he did it on witch in W3 - The worst ending.

Andrzej Kłos I know, right? I mean, why do people in games/movies always happen to run in slow motion just when something bad is about to happen?
Maybe we’re just seeing the world through the witcher’s eyes or reaction time? They are superhumans/mutants after all.
Wait, so neither Geralt nor Foltest noticed the silver studded Witcher gauntlets being worn by a 'blind monk'.
I mean, studs aren't exactly exclusive to witchers, and neither an indicator that an assassins of kings is among you.

Don't blame the emperor for being cunning , he even took a fortress by bribing all the mercenaries who were defending it .

Wtf was geralt doing in this chase? Use a bloody sign lol
Only the Aksi sign would have stopped letho there and I don't think Aksi would be able to affect another witcher
+xEka17 It would. It does affect Vesemir in TW3
+xEka17 what about Aard??
It's easy to be clever in hindsight.
Because he has to stop, make the sign with his hands, and by the time he's done that Letho would be long gone.

My jaw dropped when this happened. After the events of The Witcher 1, I was totally not expecting this!
At the first time I played witcher 2, in this part, I was thinking that the blind monk would be the assassin, and it was really true. That music man... it's from the main menu
A truly epic and dramatic scene....really rare in today's games. Masterpiece.
geralt should have know something was off.
Indeed, you can clearly see letho silver gloves. And I´m not even a witcher.
Lethos "gloves" for example.
fuck that! How about the size of that fucking man for starters!

You must be a 12 year old kid you cant follow a mature story to think that elder scrolls are better than witcher
Both are different. Witcher is better for gameplay but no other game have huge story as Elder Scrolls
Witcher has better boobies
Huge story doesn't mean better
And Witcher series, including books, has bigger story. And more detailed
Nobody suspects buff blind man.
The author makes me love Foltest then get him killed, well played sire.
Guards are a little stupid....
"It's Him ! He killed the King !"
"With what weapon ?"
"The one you have on hands !"
"There is no blood on my sword...."
"Oh...."
He could have thrown the knife out the window but heard the guards coming so he drew out his sword. Also the guards propably got a narrow sight after they saw their king in a poddle of blood on the ground and saw a man with his sword out at the scene and novody else.
Everytime I watch this
I want to go back in time and change what happened
For Temeria!
I'd played witcher 3 before 2 and my only exposure to Foltest was Gwent but honestly after playing 2 I can say I'd follow Foltest into combat happily he's one of three good kings alongside Radovid and Emhyr and his death was actually quite sad.
Witcher 2 is so damn good.
2:09 that has to be the most disgusting looking creature I have ever seen in any of the Witcher games.
The way he look at Geralt is like "I knew it....Sorry my friend....".... That scene give me goosebump everytime .
It is these moments you realise that the game you played is something more...much more. From this moment you know that North is about to fall, and that the game is more like the real world outside-where Hope is lost by the ones that have lost their's hope too, we CAN say that Letho is the ,,bad'' guy, we can even say and should say that ,,Emhyr the Dick of the Witcher world'' is the most evil guy ever...and that IS why i so much love witcher 1, 2 and 3-no one is good or bad, just being themselfs and doing what they must....just like real world
Remember me trying to figure out what have I done wrong, that Foltest died... I love this character. This music...
if you play PC you should hold Shift to walk.

The most tragic and sad death in video game history I've ever seen.
“Oh yeah we found him standing over the body of the king, who had clearly had his throat slit, holding a sword with no blood on it. Clearly this makes him our killer.”
This game was absolutely beautiful.
Anyone else nearly cry from the music and the slow animation of his death? Or am I just a sad gamer? 😭
My god. I get chills down my entire body during this scene. It's so beautiful and shocking at the same time.
I love this game so much.
Letho looks better in this than in 3.
