As South Asian (Indian), I can confirm that Education System is the biggest direct or indirect reason behind mental health issues in youngsters here! (15-25)
@@AsasinoManik I did some research about different education systems when I was studying my Masters. I found out that schools in India are incredibly demanding in every degree, I've had the chance to meet some people from your country and apparently college students there dedicate way more time to studying than anyone in Europe, the US, most of South America, many countries in Asia....you guys come out of university really well prepared but already overworked.
Just curious, why do Indians want to be labelled as Asians?. The way I see it, being Identified as Indians is a very big achievement since it shows you guys have international branding. I'm asian myself but I always hate being asked the default line 'you asian, you Chinese right?'
Silence is suffocation. Suffering in silence over a sustained time leads to suicide, the death of our souls. A deep mahalo for continuing to scream this on the mountain top that mental health is paramount and self worth is intrinsic and worth fighting for. Bravo and thank you!👏👏👏
*The other hidden factor behind this:* Some cultures prioritise academic achievement and academic intellgence over emotional intellgence, self-awareness and holistic wellbeing (and the other 9 types of intelligence). This means kids grow into adults that do not have the emotional, psychological and social skills to deal with stress and navigate relationships (including the relationship with themselves). Were they taught how to set healthy boundaries? No, because their boundaries were constantly crossed, so they have no idea what boundaries are. There are studies that suggest this issue is mainly in Gen Z - who also grew up with smartphones - which allowed them to have a constant distraction from difficult emotions that they were never taught how to properly processes and deal with. Previous generations did not have access to instant high dopmaine activities through a smartphone, so when we had difficult emotions, more often than not, we had to fully experience the emotions even as kids. This taught us emotional resilience and allowed us to gain a base level of emotional intelligence. We also had to physically meet with people for most types of socialising, work and everyday activities, which allowed us to grow up with a base level of social skills. Some parents teach their kids to focus on the material external world and very little on the internal abstract world, so no wonder they have mental health issues. They also prioritise what others in their community will think if their kids don't get a certain academic or career acheivements over their kid's actual wellbeing.

True. But what I think is really going on is that 1st generation Americans (immigrants) had a highly specific & clear set of goals - economic survival & having children. And that grinding was something they chose (unless they were distressed refugees). They are imprinting their kids with an immigrant's sense of continual economic panic. In the meantime, in the USA, labor gains have been detached from productivity gains since 1980. That's how we went from one income supplying a house, a car, health insurance & a college education, to two incomes barely covering rent & a car.
Not just therapy (which can be very inaccessible and I think experience can depend a lot based on who the therapist is) but also self help books, Buddhist teachings, mindfulness based practices, stoicism,... These other things can be more financially accessible! But would be helpful to point to specific resources. I'd start with Thich Nhat Hanh talks / books :)
Fresh perspective: Asian-americans benefit by getting more exposure to their native/ethnic cultures and countries as well. Or else they can feel lost or like they don't belong. They benefit by knowing where they come from, why their parents are the way they are, and of course finding the right support and community
The difference is probably related to the fact that immigrants are a self-selected population subset of their country of origin. In contrast, their children are a more representative general slice of the population.
School might be a problem as well. I remember back in the day at uni, there was a nice asian girl in our class, she sat right next to me one day and then kind of obviously mimicked my body language, she rolled her sleeves up just the way I have them rolled, she sat in the same awkward, Zuckerberg-like position I tend to sit in and she mimicked even my non obvious gestures. It was probably to show she likes me as it's scientifically proven people are more likely to be liked by others if they show similarities in behaviour and I actually kind of liked her, so I wanted to approach her as it was an English lesson and she would be my speaking partner. The thing is as the lesson started, teacher went over the class as she was checking our homework. She reached her at the very end and the girl had some piece of homework missing, so the teacher just expelled her from class at a whim despite she never expelled anyone before. The class even started laughing as it was a bs punishment for missing homework. The lesson then went on and I got another girl as a speaking partner, which I also kind of liked. The punishment might seem kind of random, but I still have a feeling I can't shake the teacher expelled her because she was showing too obviously she likes me and Asian girls might not be accepted that well in our society. I know it's kind of paranoid and slightly selfish to think the world revolves around me as otherwise you wouldn't make such assumption, but if this really was the reason, then I can't imagine what other arbitrary punishments she must have gone through while growing up.
That's horrible! Of course, looking at your name I have to wonder if this is a chatbot doing an AI text for some reason. Sorry if you're a real person!

The difference might be that the immigrants grew up in their own culture and then migrated as adults. So they weren't outsiders in their formative years. But the ones born abroad grow up as foreigners. Their formative years are spent as outsiders. The mental stress from not belonging to a greater community becomes a permanent part of their identity. Therapy.. Really? As an Indian, I do not know why but mental therapy clinics are either non-existent or expensive as hell. Imagine a student going through mental health issues due to his parents.. then do you expect his parents to give him or her money to see a mental health doctor? no way! Paying a therapist that charges like twice or thrice than a normal doctor, just to get to talk to them.. no way they would want to spend that much money. Because for a lot of the students, the problem itself is money, their family's financial conditions which motivate them to study so much and pass some exams. So paying money for anything other than travel would be last thing they do.
I was lucky enough to have health insurance to cover my therapy and I immediately went. I can confirm it helped my life tremdously and I honestly don't know if I would be alive today without it.
The world is vast as you know. Some countries offers huge amounts of coverage depending on employers up to 50%, 80% to100% for mental health, not everyone is fortunate to have it, it is already assumed. If this doesn't apply to you, then it doesn't. I'll use your logic for health care: "Health Care...Really? As an American, they charge us thousands of dollars to "cure" us, when it's not even guaranteed. Imagine having an accident due to another person, and being charged excessive amount for an Ambulance ride + room bill + treatment? no way i would want to spend that much money, just to get to the hospital emergency that my insurance won't cover. Find a loan from my parents, etc for my health for SOMEONE ELSE's mistake. Paying money for anything other than travel would be last thing they'd do." ya nah. Americans don't have free health care. Doesn't make the idea of Health Care any less important. Same for Therapy. Or else, as an Indian - go present another solution..
So, as a Nisei who got issues from my parents how do I do my best from passing it down? I mean, half my kids are already out of the house so I'm more just throwing this out there.
Hey, I've been looking into this for a psych assignment, and I think part of the reason that there appears to be lower rates of mental illness in asian immigrants vs asian-americans is because the strong mental health stigma means that they're less likely to seek help. So, when you do see them presenting with mental illness symptoms they tend to be a lot worse, and there's probably a lot of people who need treatment who aren't getting it. But, culture can also be a protective factor and identifying strongly with their culture and family can be really great. This is something that asian-americans born and raised in America may not have. it's quite complicated, and lack of research is a MAJOR issue. I would love to hear peoples thoughts on this, these are conclusions I've drawn after doing a deep diving into the scientific literature, but yeah... but no means conclusive.
Everyone complaining about the utilization of better help and it was a bad sponsor. Really missed the mark on mental health evaluations and the point of personal effort. A therapist or psychiatrist is not there to fix your problems. That's not their job. They're educationally based to understand things outside of the principles of colloquialism of society for sure, but they are only there to guide based upon the information you provide and how you want to go through your life. Pretty much they are the human form of chatgbt But you have to keep in mind majority of the treatment programs are based on colonial understanding and gender-based understanding outside of personal preferences, sexuality, immigration status, economic status, and cultural trauma. We have to show up with work done and ask them. Questions to clarify our understanding. Basically they are the index in the back of the book. You need to know what you're looking for Plus like I stated earlier, the science is still evolving. This is the first time in human history that we're not taking a colonial perspective on treatment, but we can't move it forward if people don't participate ✨🤷🏿♀️
0:33 amazing how the Internet is so big that most people won't get this reference There is a real solution to the problem, but RUclips comments aren't good for discussing anything
It’s the cultural clash. Asians in Asia know that the standards are high for everyone and need to be exceptional to survive. Asians in the US system know everyone else fails and puts zero effort and still get participation prizes. It is unfair to be measured with different sticks, but also, many US students bully each other out of envy. Thus, Asians who are outstanding have negative experiences from envious mates, and strict parents with high expectations.
I lost count of how many times I have complained at the Better Help sponsorship as many others in these videos have. As someone who did suffer from the experience with this provider and also knows several people who are highly unsatisfied with the service, I find it unnerving that we are not being listened too. Anna I LOVE your content but this is not ok so, sadly, unsub.
Scrolling, I saw the thumbnail and read the title, and without realizing the thumbnail said it, I immediately knew su*c*de was the answer... what I DIDN'T expect was the Asian-AMERICAN part. I've watched different documentaries across years about the work life/culture in Asia (mostly Japan and Korea), and learned pretty quickly the work/life balance was horrible, the generational expectation for children to achieve so much by a certain age, etc. In one way, it shows/proves how the general populous in America is lazy/ill-educated or at very least have little to no pride in education (granted, my experience is in the US South; I'm aware the South has some very strong disadvantages). But I guess it makes sense that the expectations and pressure would culturally stay the same regardless of location WITH the added setbacks of racial prejudice/bullying (assuming that her comment about school playing a huge factor in Asian youth's mental health).
Interesting research findings really, with a little bit of humor, tho. 😅 Just have to be more specific on the reasons , factors leading to suicide, I guess. Why is it that older individuals are mentally stronger than younger individuals? The key is on not blowing up easily in which that makes an individual weak minded, while the individual that did not blow up strong minded. What are the research finding on that? You and your bestie are the best, don’t get get mad now, is a compliment, looking good too! 😺🥰✨💎
Hrm....the pressure to be high achieving and high earning is both why AAIP have more career and earning success, but also why they have more mental illness :( New plan - how do parents motivate their kids to be physically (potentially unrelated but another cultural theme) and financially healthy without being mentally unhealthy??
Does Better Help work in other countries or just in North America? I'm not a native English speaker and I don't want to have to translate while I talk to someone who's supposed to help me, it's hard to convey some emotions when you're speaking another language, no matter how fluent you are. I was seeing a therapist until recently but we came to a point we weren't communicating well.
I wouldn't recommend betterhelp. So many people have had terrible experiences with it on both the customer and therapist side. There's other companies out there who care about more than just your money
Please look for a local provider. Better Help does work abroad but they are not very professional and their data protection standards are pretty bad. Just scroll on the comment section to see how many of us are complaining at such a poor choice of sponsorship.

Yes Ms. Akana. Does the CDC separate the statistics based on ethnicity? Just saying Asian American doesn't account for the cultural differences within the Asian American community.
Most studies involving Asian Americans mostly study East Asians. It’s only until recently that other ‘Asian’ groups became involved. They do not separate them by ethnicity.

I feel you. There is also a lot of information and resources online for free or for the less price. Self help books, yt videos and such.
There are also workbooks and free online resources you can use
Where can I find the sources for this information? I got really curious.
Anna’s beauty is indescribable …
"The bare minimum is being the best." lol sad truth
0:33 amazing how the Internet is so big that most people won't get this reference
There is a real solution to the problem, but RUclips comments aren't good for discussing anything
Our parents had a different expectation and mindset
The conclusion: read smutt!
This took a very personal dark turn somewhere there hahaha
I thought it became the leading cause of death a couple years ago for everyone in the US. Also, better help? Really?
Please remember you are a person not a statistic. Don't ignore warning signs, but remember that!
EMOTIONAL DAMAGE…! Now backed by science!
Everyone's broke and a 2br costs $500k... Duh.
This one was solid
I hope that betterhelp money is worth it! 🤦♂️
Don’t be afraid to call a spade a spade. Don’t let their abuse be your albatross
Isn't suicide the leading cause of death for young people all across the race?
I fell bad for Dad!
"Take a gander, DAD" lol
Take care of yourself!
I'm all for therapy, but Better Help really isn't it :/
Interesting research findings really, with a little bit of humor, tho. 😺🥰✨💎
Please stop with Better Help! Bestie! Please look into how Better Help is supporting the IOF which is actively increasing the genocide in Palestine.
Hrm....the pressure to be high achieving and high earning is both why AAIP have more career and earning success, but also why they have more mental illness :( New plan - how do parents motivate their kids to be physically (potentially unrelated but another cultural theme) and financially healthy without being mentally unhealthy??
😂😂😂 funny because most of time parents will never confess
Steven He sums this up best with, "You're a failure."
Don't bother with BH. They're hot garbage.
Please look for a local provider. Better Help does work abroad but they are not very professional and their data protection standards are pretty bad. Just scroll on the comment section to see how many of us are complaining at such a poor choice of sponsorship.
@@sihr07 thank you.
I like bestie. She went “ahhhh “ like a hot girl
Everything bad it’s the parents ya 😅😂
2:05 You can see something in her forearm is it cut wounds I don't know but it does look like it
So you are saying that Asian Americans have such a comfy life, that the only threat to them is.... themselves?
You have access to clean water whenever you're thirsty
You have the worlds best medicine, education and technology available to you at your fingertips
Millions of people are outside your border and want what you have: To live in the US of A
You are literally the 0.1% of this planet
Never in the history of mankind had a group of people such a comfy life and such high life expectancy than the modern american
For me I think it's a skip-generational thing where every two generations a bunch of us are cursed with psychiatric disorders lmaoo (my parents are fine and dandy, most of my aunts/uncles are fine save for neurodivergency as in learning disabilities) (So it's my grandparents that have given me the utter mental dysfunction gene)
OMG that's so young!
It is.
Heeeyyyy old fart here telling you it gets better. Eventually you don't feel the need to strive & achieve so hard & you can finally relax, look around at all t❤he pretty sunsets, rock out to good music, eat all the teramisu. It's OK to not be so damn hard on yourself. Embrace the A-.
Your plants are so healthy, especially the money plant!
Yes Ms. Akana. When bad policies get innacted for certain groups that mistreat the directly affected as well as looking appealing to anyone not being directly affected by the policy it may lead to certain groups adding those policies to themselves.
Ooo do you have a bunch of fake knives and a label maker?
I guess I have to pay for therapy now
I'm sorry. It's my parents fault.
Noooooo!! No betterhelp! It's now clear this is falling on deaf ears so, sadly, unsub. 😔
Lmfao this is so funny and so meaningful. Impactful. So good work.
I love you
Is it bad that I was distracted by the Tchaikovsky music?
Why in the world you keep such an awful MH provider as sponsor? It kinda kills the awareness on MH issues. Please, please, please do better research before you take their money.

Best Part - Making Bank!!! Awww yeah!!! 😆😅🤣😂😆😅🤣😂Giggling all the way to the bank!! - (Do you see that there's a slight problem there?)
Our immigrant parents don't have psychological disorders? Or is it that *they are not clinically diagnosed and acknowledged because of mental health stigma back home?* Hmmm??? 🤔
Can't be labeled crazy if there no mental health care & awareness!
