  • In his latest episode of "Grime Time", Rudy takes you through the replacement of the fuel tank strainer on "Risky Business", our 1985 Porsche 928S 32V project car. After sitting for many years, this Porsche's stale fuel turned into lacquer in the tank. Consequently, the biggest challenge for Rudy and Nick to date is getting key fuel system components replaced to finally get our 928S running properly.

    Just repairing a leak in my tank, I had no idea about how to replace the tank strainer (mine is disintegrated) and the workshop manual does not even show it, so thanks for posting this video.

    I think I’m having déjà vu, I ran into a lot of the same issues with my 82 928. Roger was great to walk me through all the troubleshooting. Great job getting everything sorted thus far, best of luck with everything else you guys are doing and hope you enjoyed your drive.

    Great video. I’ve owned my 928 S for 32 years. Been garage for the past 12 years. She’s wanting to get back in the road. Thanks for the video

      Thank you, unfortunately we're still having problems with the car losing power to the pump. But man, when she runs...

    Can you do a video on how to replace the rotor in the distributor cap and how to reset timing?

      Sorry, I have the 32V engine with twin distributors and don't have a need to reset the timing on my engine at this time.

    I appreciate your straitforward talk. Question. How long had this 928 sat with fuel before you took to work on it? I am worried for my '87 S4 which has sat 3 years w stabilized fuel. Just now getting back to reinstall intake plenum/FI dys etc. Think I should pull the strainer to have a look. If I can find it! Car ran fine before shut it off for repair 3 yr ago

      When she was gifted the car, my best friend's wife drove it to fill it up. The car would not restart after that and did not run until I bought it five years later. Consequently, the gas you see in my video was a mixture of five-year-old unpreserved gas combined with whatever was in the tank for years prior to that. In your case, the fact you added a stabilizer should prevent what I went through. Before you restart your 928, you might consider adding Star Brite® StarTron® Ethanol Fuel Treatment that's sold at Napa as it's designed to boost stale gas. I've had good results using that stuff in the past.

    Should’ve dropped the tank and power washed the inside with degreaser, then replace all fuel lines. Takes like an hour to drop the tank I’m not sure why this was skipped

    • @GuysWithRides1
      @GuysWithRides1  Год назад

      Sorry, but nothing takes an hour, especially dropping the tank. The goal was to get the car running reliably for the first time. What you're describing is another weekend project to tackle somewhere down the road after higher-priority items get done. I've put nearly two thousand miles on the car since I posted this video so my decision turned out to be a solid call.

      @@GuysWithRides1 I just removed another tank today on a 78 in an hour, hour and a half tops, while pouring drinks. I do hope this worked for you but it’s not the right way to do the job

    • @GuysWithRides1
      @GuysWithRides1  Год назад +2

      @@928pcar Congrats on being able to do that job so quickly while pouring drinks. You can't fault me for not doing something "the wrong way." The video focused on troubleshooting and replacing the fuel pump and strainer, which I believe I did that job correctly, as it hasn't let me down. If I wind up pulling the tank, I will do the job properly and document it in a separate video focused on just that job.
