Thanks for this. Its interesting how you were still able to do it without detaching the battery and the black ribbon cable. Great angles and shots too really helped. Waiting for a good deal on the 2TB SSD
Thanks! The ribbon cable is no problem but I do recommend getting that battery unplugged when performing an upgrade like this. I hope you find a good deal soon!
Thanks Taylor successfully upgraded my ssd because of your help. Love your videos just straight to the point and very clear explanation unlike the other tutorials. You have my like and sub 👍
Great vid! I did want to add that it's not necessary to unplug the battery cable, as long as you have the Steam Deck in "Battery save mode" (hold the + volume button at the same time with the power button to access it). Also--and this is important--make sure to check for the audio cable to see if it's taped to the heatsink before trying to lift it away. Mine was, and I couldn't see it because the long CR cable was covering it. I kept tugging at the heatsink wondering why it wasn't coming away and I'm hoping I didn't damage my audio functionality in the process. Still in the process of putting the Steam OS back on it so I'll know before too long.
Thanks! Knowing about that mode is a little more comforting. My concern mainly comes from working on numerous laptops where unplugging the battery is very important before touching hardware. Thanks for the heads up about the audio cable. I don't recall running into it in my teardown, but perhaps there's some builds out there where it might get caught like it did in your case.
LOL, the intro. Hey, someone needs to get you a V60 or a Chemex for Christmas. For someone who loves cooking as much as you do, I think you’ll really enjoy upping your coffee game.
Thank you! And right?! It's that ribbon cable that makes it so tense. I hope they improve that design in the next deck to not have to deal with delicate cables.
The matte screen, surprisingly. There's too many situations where the glare is more distracting than anything else. I also don't see a very large difference between the glossy colors and the matte colors.
Thank you! I love to hear that. On paper it can increase the speed, but personally, I haven’t noticed any difference in speeds. The drives that ship with these are already very fast.
Hi, I love your video and pretty simple explanation, but this video is different from the other, because you didn’t unplugged the left screw of the ribbon cable, is it safe to do that? I still afraid to upgrade my SD oled because of that step
Taking extra steps to get that ribbon cable out of the way is going reduce the risks of damaging it. Do what you feel is comfortable as long as you can avoid damage to that ribbon cable.
I don't believe the Deck's carrying case causes static build up that could potentially harm the device. It should be safe in there from everything except for being waterlogged by a hurricane or crushed by a sumo wrestler. YMMV in those particular instances.
I've heard that the Steam Deck gets much hotter with the SSD and the battery drains faster. Do you have any experience? wanted to install my 1tb SSD today.
As a technical support specialist that does not make any sense. If bought a proper drive from a trusted brand you shouldn’t experience this on a noticeable degree.
damn... valve made it harder to upgrade :( I just got my rog ally Z1E. unplugging the battery, and putting the ssd it's so easy with the ifix it tools!.
It's not as easy as upgrading the Ally like you mentioned. I do appreciate that we have the option to upgrade the OLED Steam Deck and not compromise the structural integrity. That wasn't the case with the LED Steam Deck.
@@TaylorBrauer wait... why it's not so easy? the only tricky thing it's the disconnect the battery, but with the right tools it's no sweat. you meant that?
I Upgrade only to 1tb 😊 1tb cost me 80€ and 2TB cost 195€ i dont think 2TB is needet. I have a Gaming pc with 4tb 4080 and steam Deck is my couch device
Realistically unless this is your only device and given the limited power of this device (meaning you won’t be playing those more demanding and larger size AAA games), 1 TB is definitely more than enough. You’ll just need to cycle through games you beat worst case scenario. In fact, while more storage is preferred I’d argue this a rare case where 1 TB is truly a sweet spot size. Your better off saving the extra $80-$100 you’d need to dish out for a 2 TB drive towards another upgrade such as a case , screen protector, or even some games.
If you have a game library on an external drive it should sync after re-install with a new internal SSD. Be sure to research how to do this before you replace the drive. As for programs, probably not since those interface closer to the OS. You'll most likely have to re-install those programs.
@@All404G00d Ah you mean taking your old drive, putting it in an enclosure, and then playing games off that from the new internal drive? I'm not 100% sure tbh but if you point Steam to that game library I'd be surprised if you couldn't play games off it. I really haven't tried what you're attempting to do and there's probably a better guide out there than what I can provide you with here.
@TaylorBrauer I have old games like God of War 1 that have reached an advanced stage and I don't want to play it from the beginning, so I ask you. In general, thank you for the response you are the best

My coffee game is very basic. I do love my Keurig haha. It would be fun to explore coffee making more in-depth sometime.
GREAT GUIDE this was scary to do lmao

thank you for the video. the only part that scares me is the cable part but i just ordered a 2tb 2230 so wish me luck
Yw! It's a bit annoying but you got this. Please disconnect the battery before swapping the drives.
Nice walkthrough! Now that you have more storage in your glossy oled, which screen has become your daily driver? I am torn making a decision
The matte screen, surprisingly. There's too many situations where the glare is more distracting than anything else. I also don't see a very large difference between the glossy colors and the matte colors.
You can get an OEM WD SN740 2TB (Read-5150MB/s, Write-4850MB/s) for around $160, and it's supposedly an all-TLC drive. I used it and it works great.
That sounds like a great deal. Lots of storage and fast. Thanks for sharing!
Extremely well executed video :) from my understanding, this not only increases storage space but also speed, right?
Thank you! I love to hear that. On paper it can increase the speed, but personally, I haven’t noticed any difference in speeds. The drives that ship with these are already very fast.
ey this helped me. thankyou
You're welcome!
That’s great . How about previous game library? Re download everything?
It's a fresh install so you'll want to backup all your games to another drive first if you don't want to re-download them all.
Can u do this with apple macOS ?

Do you know if the steam deck bag prevents static? I was thinking about using it like you did, but I'm worried about the fabric causing static
I don't believe the Deck's carrying case causes static build up that could potentially harm the device. It should be safe in there from everything except for being waterlogged by a hurricane or crushed by a sumo wrestler. YMMV in those particular instances.
Question is can you swap drives between decks? My lcd busted and decided to upgrade to oled and wanted to pull my 2tb from my lcd for oled
Yep, you can swap it.

I haven't experienced that, no.

I upgraded my storage 2 days ago went from 512 to 1tb and a 128Gb sd card to 512
That's a nice bump in storage 💪Enjoy!
What alienware laptop are you using?
It's an M15R7 with a 12700H and 3080Ti.

Yep totally doable. The flash drive is just way faster.

512 GB to 1 TB doesn't seem like that big of an upgrade, especially with how large games are now. 2 TB 2230 has come down a lot, why not 2 TB.
2TB is a good amount of space. If you can find a deal and need the space then 2TB makes sense.
