As a hairdresser I have had every one of the struggles you’ve experienced. It’s a ROUGH job. If you’re intelligent and sensitive and somewhat introverted, it’s excruciating at times! It’s not just an art. It’s constant gab and acting up and on and it’s too exposing when you’re sick or fragile or moody. I’m glad you’re free. Live on

Honestly this really hits home for me and I really needed to watch this right now. After almost three years of being a hairstylist my mental health has just deteriorated. I would have anxiety and dread my shift for the day and constantly felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I've been thinking of other more suitable career paths and this helped give me the courage to go through with resigning from the salon I'm at. Thank you.

It’s a year later but this comment is exactly how I’m feeling right now. Did it get better?

This is THE most relatable video I've ever seen. I left the industry last November and I haven't figured out what else to do since. I also deal with mental illness and I'm a very empathetic person so I took everything to heart and to home every day. I am so glad I came across this video because I have been thinking recently about rejoining the industry and you just reminded me of every reason why I left to begin with.

I've been toying around with the idea of quitting hair for a while now. I have felt the same as exact way as you and while I love most of my clients, the stress of making them happy with my whole being is exhausting. (extreme introvert). I've been in the industry for ten years and constantly feel like I'm not getting anywhere. My husband says I'm too hard on myself because I started off in a toxic salon and then moved towns and salons. I have a wonderful salon now, but I still struggle with feeling disconnected from other hairstyles and the industry in general. Quarantine has given me a chance to pursue my old interests again including toying around with the idea of an actual career change this time. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

Its very 'Draining' to try and make ppl happy. ESPECIALLY their looks. VERY Tedious and painstaking effort. NEED TO CHARGE BIG $, to make it worth it.

vent/rant ahead: i’ve been doing hair for a little over a year now and I feel like i already want to quit. it sucks because i’ve been wanting to do hair since i was about 12/13 and i had been so dead set on this being my career but now that i am in the industry i already know i can’t do this forever. it’s definitely the place i work at also that feeds into it but i also suffer with anxiety and depression and this is the main reason i want to quit. i hate going into work worrying about what i’m going to do that day because most days my appointments change or i don’t know what i have gotten on the books because i can’t check my schedule outside of my job. i work at a corporate salon and all the pressure over numbers is driving me crazy. i had a couple bad clients very close together that kinda traumatized me into thinking everyone is going to hate the work i did. and i barely make enough money to get by. i just don’t know what else i would do if i quit hair because i don’t want to go back to school yet and i have no plan b because this was supposed to be IT! and now i’m paying back student loans over this which makes me feel guilty about wanting to quit because my parents had to take a loan out as well to help me with my school. i also think i should give it some more time and find a different salon to work at to see if i feel any better because it’s literally been only a year into hair but i just can’t imagine feeling any better about this. i just feel stuck now :/

I felt the exact same way, I think another salon would help but also if you do quit don't feel quilty we can't help not enjoying something

I never knew hairdressing can get so stressful. Im kind of an introvert too at times so it makes sense it can be overwhelming meeting so many people AND trying to make them happy.

I feel like everything you are saying is literally the conversation I've been having in my head. I think I would have quit sooner if I had the self confidence to, didn't want to be a "quitter", and realized I could do something else. Currently, I'm working while I put myself through College.

After 10 years of hair I lost my passion as well. I'm an introvert so its mentally draining talking to people all day. Doing hair as definitely helped me come out of my shell but Im ready to move on, just don't know what to do yet 🤔

I'm glad you got out. I can imagine what that might be like. I know what it's like to want something badly, go hard at it for a while, then end up absolutely hating doing that thing like you've never hated anything before. Never second-guess the decision to move on from something that makes you feel that way. After all, you can always head back if you change your mind later.

    Hi there
Just want to say this video has really helped me. I’ve been working in a salon for two years now, really good salon in fact it was my tutor at college who owns it and that’s how I got the job. I feel exactly the way you do about hairdressing with the anxiety situation and constantly worrying that the client won’t like their hair or will complain and it’s hard. I felt like it probably since my last year at college but I thought it would get better once I started in a real salon. I’ve been here two years now and I still feel the same if not worse. I’ve decided to quit hairdressing and go into something else that wasn’t as stressful. I am slightly worried I’ll regret it but hearing all these things you’ve said that I completely relate to has really helped me not stress so much. I’m handing my notice in this week as I have got another job thankfully lined up that I’m really excited to start in. Basically I just wanted to thank you for uploading this video because I’ve found it hard to find people who are in the same position as me and think the same way. I started to think I should just deal with the anxiety and get over it but it was making me feel so physically sick that I knew it wasn’t right.
    Once again thank you 😊

I use to feel exactly the same. Like no one understood or knew what it was like. Good luck with the new job and if you miss it or regret it, I know a lot of people who have gone back into hairdressing and been fine :) xx

No one I knew understood how much anxiety I would get from doing clients every day. I wouldn’t shut off when I got home, all I’d be thinking about was if someone complained about their hair that day and I would second guess myself on everything, It made me lose passion for it as I couldn’t fully enjoy doing it. Hairdressing is such a hard industry that doesn’t pay well and I think if you’re not fully passionate about doing it, it’s really not worth all the stress and anxiety for such little money. I’m happy for you that you got out of the industry and had no regrets, I hope I am the same :) xx

I honestly feel exactly the same. I was constantly worrying about clients. Who was going to complain next. I had anxiety in the salon, at home. Once you leave you'll be shocked how little we got paid! I work for little money now but its still more then my hourly rate in the salon. Plus even when you move up the salon you still don't make much considering

Can anyone with anxiety and or depression issues who are moving away from hairdressing suggest thoughts on better suited career paths they would choose? I really want to do hair and I think I have a passion for it and I'm confident in my work ethic, but I'm introverted and do have anxiety issues. Thanks
