That was an interesting repair. The core rod idea was great for rigidity. There was definitely enough penetration with the weld. It would be interesting to see how long it lasts. Great Job repairing it.

I have watched a lot of Pakistani Truck videos at this point and i'm amazed by the repairs you guys make. As a mechanic in Germany i can tell you we wouldn't repair this piece. The truck would be stuck there (or at the shop) until the new part arrives. So my honest question is this: Are these repaired pieces prone to breaking again? How save are they? What are your experiences on the road? Especially with shafts?

great repair.... I recommend the SHOP have some thin welding rod on hand..... just to do the first WELDs (where the gap is small between the two items to be welded). Once the initial weld is done, then go with thicker welding rod. And since SPINDLE metal is so critical, there should be better cleaning in between welds. And, the welder (current level) should be a little higher so that the welding rod really melts on contact..... the fact that the rod sticks (tells me the current setting is low)

these oersons are very ressourceful but that repair is unsafe unless they do a thermal stress relief before remachining. usually, when welding on a casting of unknown steel composition, it is a good practice to pre heat and post heat ot minimize the chances of flaw at the weldment boundary.

Statistics tell the whole story. Pakistan has kinda low labor productivity numbers. That means the net value generated per person, even if they are working hard, the final net output is low. Lots of earnest sweat and activity but with marginal results. Also a lack of laws and standards and oversight leads to marginal and dangerous results. You could say they do these things because they are poor. Or maybe they are poor because they do these things. Maybe both.

I didn't express any opinions. It's a fact that their net productivity is quite low. Fact.
Your *facts* are not valid, they're opinions. Pakistan has 231,000,000 people. Their population density is TWELVE TIMES that of the USA! So not that rural. And there are around 5080 auto part stores in Pakistan. And we've seen many videos where they are using new OEM Caterpillar parts, so OEM parts are readily available. What's likely is that this repair job can be billed at about a eighth the cost of buying a new or used spindle, so most truck owners will go for the far cheaper welding "repair". Never mind the questionable safety and longevity.

I would have done that differently. I would have mounted the swivel on the face plate by the brake threads and bored in from the back up to the seal-path diameter. And made a new stub axel and welded it a bit from both sides. I’m thinking an old hydraulic ram rod for bar stock?

No chance of working. Again another "Bodge" repair with a partial depth weld of a hardened cast steel stub axle assy with PK Bridge (type 6013) welding rods with no welding pre heat and no post weld stress relief. @@restorationtoolshop Well while 7018 is quite a bit stronger than 6013 it also needs the work piece pre heated prior to welding and I have never seen this done in any of the video's. I use a lot of 11018 and 12018 rods and have to have a manufacture's approved welding inspector to watch the actual welding repair.
Pre-heating temperatures are checked with "temp-sticks" and strict welding procedures have to be followed including where to start the weld and the direction of the weld relative to the work piece. After each weld run there is a MPI test or if possible a proper Radiograph once all the welding has been done.

I genuinely appreciate that this is a third world, make do and mend culture.
BUT THIS IS A LETHAL REPAIR.
Time and or cost dont really come into it. This is first day engineering basics.
You NEVER weld a stub axle. It is heat treated steel, the welded area will always be much weaker.
You NEVER weld a part together where the weld is directly in a shear load without additional support.
EVEN as a temporary repair, this is very very dodgy.
These trucks are universally fitted with much heavier springs, so the operator can massively overoad it. All on the original axles and brakes.
A better, but still very dodgy way to do it, would be to bore the stub axle right out the hub. Turn up a new stub, and weld it right through the hub. At least then the welded area would have some support.
Basically, this video amply demonstrates that in this country human life is woth less than one new stub axle for a truck. 😢

As finance is the most powerful incentive to accumulate wealth and your trucking business is your life investment any amount of accumulated income must be considered an investment property when you are facing unexpected expenses ( mechanical failure)it’s also a financial risk to deal directly with those expenses assuming you can not avoid or afford your investment (truck) to be off the road for any length of time so repairs must be completed as quickly and efficiently and inexpensive as possible that’s my observation as a result of watching these various transport companies to cut down on costs

Where I live that repair is illegal. If you do it and for any reason it fails and can be traced back to you, you will be looking at fines and in the even of a vehicle accident possible jail time. You do not know the metallurgy of those components nor have a proper engineer approved repair procedure so you are 100% liable for any and all costs, damages, law suits etc. that your failed repair may incur. In Mexico they can unhook the computer voltage regulator and install a regular old school regulator and off you go . They repair old sagged out leaf springs and heat and re bend them and re harden them . Also ball joints are put in a special press and tightened up the loose ball and socket . New grease seal and grease fitting . Of course I don't recommend it but it does work .

In Mexico unusual repairs are made everyday. The strength and worthiness of such repairs are experienced in real settings. They continue to be made because they work. There are deviations from recommended engineering protocols but they must stand the test of time. I’m here to tell you that I’ve experienced the efficacy of repairs such as these and they last. Trust experience not talk.
