- Everything you need to know about The Beatles' "Sexy Sadie." |
Written in a bitter mood during his last hours in Rishikesh, John wrote a song called "Maharishi" about the argument that ended the Beatles' stay there, containing explicit insults. But to avoid a lawsuit, it was rewritten and renamed "Sexy Sadie."
🗣️ "That was inspired by Maharishi," John said. "I wrote it when we had our bags packed and were leaving. It was the last piece I wrote before I left India. I just called him, 'Sexy Sadie,' instead of (sings) 'Maharishi, what have you done, you made a fool of everyone...' I was just using the situation to write a song, rather calculatingly but also to express what I felt. I was leaving the Maharishi with a bad taste. You know, it seems that my partings are always not as nice as I'd like them to be."
This Lennon/McCartney song seems to have been entirely written by John Lennon, with no input from Paul; though George deserves a small credit for coming up with the title. On the lyrical front, though, John's early favorite, "I've Been Good To You," by Smokey Robinson, deserves a small acknowledgement as well because of its opening line, "Look what you've done / you've made a fool of someone." The song started to take shape on April 12, 1968, the day John confronted the Maharishi and started his journey home. By May 29, 1968, the day he performed the song for George at the Kinfauns' house in Esher, Surrey, the song was finished.

One of my favourite songs on the white album definitely
Same here. Up there with Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Revolution #1 (the top tier of favorites from the White Album).
@@michaeldunne338 Cry baby Cry is great too
@@michaeldunne338 love Dear Prudence and Revolution they rock
Kind of sullen and crabby.
same... some killer lennon tracks on that lp... prudence, warm gun, cry baby, yer blues, revolution, so tired, julia... I think lennon outshines mccartney's contributions here...
What gets me in this song is the great piano in it
Lennon's Zenith @ the time.
💯💯💯
@@Songwriter376 it’s great to play too. The part where he sings “She made a fool of everyone…” the piano plays the same thing as in the intro. It’s like a series of descending G’s. It’s a really cool riff
@@elementrypenguin3116Absolutely agree. @2:14 into the song is my favorite part as it is pure Beatles to me along with Pauls genius bass riffs at the end. Who does that? Only they did. I can play along with this song on piano for hours non stop! lol.
@@Songwriter376 I love it. It’s such an odd piano piece. How they came up with that is amazing. Is it in G? Are there non diatonic chords in it too? Maybe some passing chords.
Despite John's dismay regarding the tiny guy, the positive result of their trip yielded the material for the White Album.
Very interesting info on Sexy Sadie. I’m always blown away at how hard they worked in the studio. So many takes to get a track perfected.
Paul's brilliant piano intro-riff is what ultimately helped the track take shape.
He's just playing the same chords John had already written for the song. Don't know why people always want to give Paul credit for John's songs.
@@bendagostino2217 Paul often had GOOD idea's for Lennon tunes, see Lucy for another example
@@bendagostino2217 He's not giving him credit for anything but coming up with a piano part, just like Lennon did on Obla-di-bla-da.
@@bendagostino2217 WOW what an immature comment.
@@rossdelain1645 wow you had no brain capacity to rebutt my comment. How many John songs has Paul tried to take credit for since he died? In my life, if I fell, to name a couple.
It's touching that the Beatles were looking for a superstar.
I wouldn't say touching.Let's be honest they were looking for a Brian Epstein replacement.
Isn't everyone?
John's biting sarcasm in full display in this masterful song
Fantastic piano lick from Paul, gives it a real jazzy feel. The guitar outro is wonderful.
Jazzy? No. Not at all.
@@70PaulK it's more of a chromatic riff which, yes, really makes the song soar.
Weren't claims about the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi making passes at women put into doubt, or challenged by some? Thought I heard that some of the claims maybe originated from rumor mongering by Magic Alex Mardis, their hanger on electrician?
indeed, Cynthia claimed the story was B.S. - Pattie similarly doubted it
'People' were doing drugs, against the rules.
The girl he allegedly made pass at says it happened and said so for years, so who knows. He probably did.
Some sources say it's true; others say it's false. George Harrison said it was "bullsh#t."
The claims were true, but two things should be noted- he didn't force himself on anybody, and he never claimed to be celibate or a holy man.
I think George deserves more credit than just for coming up with the title. In the song's outro, George's slow-hand, arabesque, repeating lick is a remarkable piece of composition. Something I call, as a music teacher, 'the long thought melody.' A LOT of work went into this line. I'm sure John or Paul didn't come up with it. It sounds like pure George.
The detail in these videos is amazing ! 😲
There's a rumor that there were people doing drugs and that led to the messy break-up.
I've practiced TM since 1975 because of The Beatles. TM has saved my life.
The deep rest is incredible. Look into it. I really like the Maharishi because he brought TM to the West.
and Paul and Ringo still do TM to this day (as did George up to his passing)
This was a great one. Keep them coming!
Great information as always, thank you for your content.
To me this song is the best to reflect the aura of London summers of the second half of the 60's. I wish I were born and were there at that time. The atmosphere created in the song is positively enveloping and intoxicating.
The great song! Deconstuction of that shows thats every single peice of that is a diamond. I knew that John was a genius. But everyone of them did that. Paul's piano playing was inimitable, George played guitar and changed the lyrics.
Easily one of the best production sounds on the White Album.
John was always looking for that ultimate being but finally realized that only he and Yoko were his reality.
Paul’s piano and bass (and no doubt arrangement skills) on this song are incredible ⚡️✨🕺🏻🙏❤️
No lol more like John’s chord progression inspiring everybody else including Paul again
He wanted him to slip him the answer hehe 😜
Funny because the answer is Jesus Christ
The song could have easily been called "Butter Chicken"
Or ' Orange Chicken'?.....Or.....' Chow Mein Chicken '? lol
She made a fool of everyone 🎼🎶🎤white Album 1 of the best Beatles Album...👏thank you from Germany, Elli ✌❤,I love it.❤
The first diss track! "Maharishi, what have you done?!!"
Wow, that was awesome...All these decades, I never knew what the back story behind the 'Sexy Sadie' song?...Thanks..
107 takes ! Wow i dont feels so bad now. The Beatles, ....... great artist
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful day ❤😊
Thank you! You too!
Well Mia Farrow maintained she was sexually harassed by the Maharishi...anyway, that song is one of best from WA
Some sources say it's true; others say it's false. George Harrison said it was "bullsh#t."
@BeatlesBible1 well, the other accusation I heard, it was Prudence Farrow who made the accusation, you have to admit, the Farrows have a history of making wild accusations about others, I won't say anymore...
@@XFLexiconMatt the rumor was that it was centered around Prudence Farrow . She never has claimed it to be true, and had maintained loyalty to the Maharshi for the rest of his life.
Mia is also a well known nutjob. Anyone with a brain would never trust a single word from her on anything. She loves being a victim.
Great video! I was familiar with much of this, but appreciate the added detail. Here's a question-- I've always heard that Ringo left India first, then Paul, then John+George. But what about the other celebrities? When did Donovan, Mike Love, and the Farrows leave?
I love the piano in this song. One of the best on the White album.
I love this song it's a master piece
Good drums
George was not quiet one , George was the one they didn't listen to ?
Oftentimes, yes.
Hearing about all the takes they did of their songs always amazes me. The band I used to be in went to the studio and we would do three takes and be like, "Well, we won't be able to play it any better than that." 😂 That's the difference between a great band and a garage band.
It's the #1 thing I notice about the difference between amateurs & pros. Amateurs think the pros are just "gifted", and crank out magical stuff in minutes. While it sometimes happens [but very infrequently] in reality they take below par garbage and work it over & over & over, then give it a rest, then work it over & over again, rest it and rework it a few more times, and eventually, from all that persistent thought, trial & error, comes the purified gold.
You can't get that kind of persistence out of amateurs. They can only judge it after the first trial, and don't have the interest or patience to stay with something that isn't apparently good already. They think songs present themselves to musicians in a completed form, and if that doesn't happen, it wasn't a good song or idea.
It's also why it's very hard to find a good writing partner, and probably the main reason Lennon & McCartney made a good match - they both had that investigative perspective, instead of the delusion that great stuff is "inspired" or comes by some form of blessed genius. I've always hated the notion of "inspiration" because it promotes that easy excuse for impatience in amateur musicians, as well as a kind of worship by music fans. The pros aren't better songwriters. They just understand that good art naturally requires the faith to stay with the process while it finds a solution.
And it seems to be why so many musicians think a better mixing job, new guitar strings, better recording equipment, or a more pristine sounding mic or speakers will improve their music. This conviction is reflected in the way sample libraries are promoted, as if the hall it was recoded in, and the mics used, will somehow make your songs better. That is the only kind of stuff they can think of to up their game, because they aren't into the creative process of dynamic arrangement.
They can't make inspiration "happen" in that department, so they skip it by default. The Beatles understood that arrangement is a crucial part of the song quality....the difference between strumming "I am the walrus" on a guitar, and the constantly changing texture & instrumental melodies of what they finished with.
@@jameseverett9037 Very insightful, and absolutely true. It's amazing, to me, that any band ever makes it. That kind of drive, determination, and commitment is not easy to find. Then, you try to get four or five people together that all fit and will put in the work, that's a pretty rare occurrence.
@@scottbubb2946 I wonder now if so many wanna be music stars would have benefitted from the footage that's coming out lately, showing how the Beatles tinkered with ideas, often long before anything came of them. George's "Something" was gradually pieced together over months - I think it was almost half to 3/4 or a year, while he pestered the others for ideas on the lyrics, in vain, mostly. Even after the song was fleshed out, they still stalled on certain parts, redid them months later, etc.
Who do you and I know that has that approach to their music?
If all these potential rock stars had been able to understand how their favorite songs were developed, I wonder if they would have changed their philosophy of song writing, and been more successful. I guess we'll never know, as the music industry doesn't operate that way anymore. They don't want to bet on anyone's own motivation [and for good reason], so they put together groups of prefab heart throbs, like Il Devo, who they can control and dictate every move to make and which songs they'll sing, with a staff to write and produce their arrangements.
It’s great, one of the best sounding Beatle tracks. Good thing Maharishi was dropped from the lyrics, it makes the song more universal and open for interpretation. Interestingly, John sounds really sad on the track rather than angry or sarcastic.
Its my favorite track on the White Album.
Like a lot of people, the Beatles projected an image onto Maharishi, holding him up as a man above carnal desires. Credit the Beatles later for realizing they had overreacted and reached out to Maharishi, who, not surprisingly, was kind and magnanimous in his response.
Fucking love this song by lennon😊
Paul was so right in his comment. John was influenced by a strange man that he called Magic Alex. He was out of his mind and was really ridiculous and very rude for nothing important. It is curious that, he song applys so well to Yoko Ono! She made a fool of everyone.
If you are a teacher of any kind and you use that to manipulate women into sleeping with you, you’re a piece of shit. That’s what John was getting at I just don’t think he knew how to say it.
I know you. "Yoko is to blame for everything"
@@RogerPeet Yoko didn't bring more unity or great inspiration to the Beatles, that's for certain. No one blames Yoko for everything. You're just one of those people without an argument so you turn Yoko into a strawman to make one. Anyone who isn't fond of her must "hate" her, and "blame" her for everything bad that ever happened -it's got to be all or nothing, otherwise you wouldn't have a convincing enough argument.
@@jameseverett9037 It is difficult to say exactly what had what influence on the Beatles - there certainly where a lot of things and peoples. But without Yoko there would certainly be no "Because" (she played the moonlight sonata that inspired John) and later no "Imagine", probably no "Jealous Guy" etc.
At this time , i'have got a girlfiend... We called her sexy Vero when we listended the song ! What have you done, you make the fool of every one... Oldies but goldies...
Maharishi never said he was enlightened or celibate yet he did once sign a document
Bol Bramacharya Mahesh which means life celibate. He did introduce a lot of people to
meditation but he avoided serious topics like paying tax and sex.
107 takes! That's some serious trying.
And yet, Georgie and Ritchie kept harping over how many takes they made for Maxwell Silver Hammer.
Religion + Hypocrisy....go hand in hand, and always has done.
I just want to know what Paul said that was so funny at 3:22. "And also it folds..."?
Something about the Maharishi touring with the Beach Boys (?)
Paul is referring to how Maharishi's 1968 tour with the Beach Boys "folded," meaning it flopped. 😅
@@BeatlesBible1 Ah right of course.
John bought into romantic ideas of mystisism and all that and when he found out it wasn`t what he thought he got mad and lashed out. Thats John.
107 takes!
No one mentioned the slight slowing down of this track...
That's one of the best parts for me besides near the end when John sings ....ohhh, oh oh oh oh ohhhh....that is pure Beatles to me.
What about those wild background vocals?? I assume these were George Martin's idea?
is the OG maharishi song out there, or was it never even recorded
@@joshfenn5374 It was never recorded.
Sadie Atkins......
That was a great song... the final mix. George Martin was amazing and glad it all worked out. Still, the White Album production wasn't nearly as good as some of the other stuff they've done.... I guess George was absent for much of it.
Great song but too much overwrought drama and ego in the Beatles sometimes. Paul seems to have it, it’s just a guy that can teach you meditation
Second omg!
If you can't see your guru as human, then perhaps you shouldn't have one.
Still, quite an awesome song. One of my alltime favorites. Could apply to any number of people.
Sadie Mae Glutz.
Ouch 😂 that's a sad memory 😭 unfortunately that was what popped in my mind
Just googled them, what a beast!
Take 107. WTF.
.
They obviously had never met an Indian man before.
I think they expected too much from Maharishi. He was only a meditation teacher. Not someone teaching a religion. They just didn't like him because he was an icky dude.
Ya think? If only someone from within the Beatles camp, or even from within the band had made that point to John. It could have been part of the video and everything. 🤷♂️
Yah nothing like a religion.
He was the latest and the greatest of them all ❤
He carried himself as much more than meditation instructor. Founded tm.
@@jazzsnare so what you’re saying is he was much more than a meditation instructor because he created transcendental meditation. Sounds like something a meditation instructor might do to me 😂😂😂
05:20 I'm a regular heterosexual American guy,.... but good God, George Martin was more handsome than all 4 Beatles put together & almost any male movie star in the last 100 years. ..... just sayin'
I hate to break it to ya, but your first comment isn't true. No big deal, but your thoughts never enter regular heterosexual guy's minds.
@@stickman1742 😆
I loved the story until the part where George sucked up with an apology; that made me sick.
Another voiceover, with virtually no actual speaking by the principles.
Bridge copped from Here There and Everywhere. Kind of a crap, filler song on the White Album (should have subbed Not Guilty).
It's a pretty common and natural chord progression.
