As if farming wasn't hard enough with costs going through the roof for everything, no value in wool etc. but to loose a top ram on top of it. Then there's the expense of replacing him and hopefully with similar genetics might not be so easy. New research by Teagasc has found almost three in every four cattle and sheep enterprises are economically unviable. Something needs to change at government and EU level! Now, I saw a video of a cattle farmer who made a double sided trough sled that he could move , divided into compartments in which he poured loose minerals of different sorts. He wrote on each compartment what the mineral was, then made note of which pasture, and where the feeder was located within the pastures, to see what the cows consumed the most of. He figured out that his cows seemed to want different minerals in different areas of a pasture, or in different pastures altogether. He thinks that whatever mineral was missing in the grass of a certain area is what made his cows seek out the trough and only eat a certain mineral. I found that very interesting. it might explain why some sheep hit the lick buckets harder than others. Maybe that's an experiment you might try some day. It might save money in only feeding the minerals they are missing, instead of wasting time/money, on minerals they don't need.
Great post again. I find you video so interesting and more importantly very helpful. Only been working with sheep 5 years. Building up my own flock to... Regards to your dog. I have a 2 year old Collie. He seems to love and work best in the yard and handling system. Rather than out in the feild... All the best. 🐏🐏
Another good video 👍. Put straw in the footbath makes it alot easier to get lambs through it. Best to stand on clean concrete after footbath. Mag bucket in spring. Bolus in autumn. 👌
Great video. Have hill sheep in Kerry (Cheviot and Swales). Fluke is a problem here, too. And can identify it from a swollen jaw. Then give a Trodax injection which kills all stages. Also swear by Crystalix mineral buckets; sheep love them. Love the idea of a covered foot bath. Thanks, we all like to learn from each other.
Came here from Sandi in Canada. Will from Cowley Hill asked her to give a shout-out to his competition against the Irish sheep farmers. I am subscribing and will keep on visiting. Can't pick a favourite because I follow both sides. Good luck.❤️🐏🇮🇪🐑🏴🐏❤️
Great video, my father Glen watches your videos all the time. He wanted me to comment here to let you know you can help solve the problem of the sheep being a bit thin, by using some concentrates - a 16% protein concentrate would work well - 300 grams of concentrate every second day is optimal. Along with this you can use a feed bucket called “headstart” you can put these out 3 weeks before tipping and leave them in the field from then on - its a 17% protein bucket, which is very good. Headstart is also made in Ireland too which is good. Keep up the great videos, Glen and his sheep farmer friends watch them all the time.
My Ewes done very poor thrive after weaning, I have a severe definency in Zinc and Cobalt but Ewes are Bolused, but I think the Boluse ran out around weaning. Have boulsed again coming up to breeding 2 weeks a go and I think it's the best thrive they have done all year. Would be an interesting video around minerals, to see what people are doing. Great videos, hard luck on the Ram, but you will always loose one or two. I would definitely like to get one of the backpacks
Bimeda Zincosel, I started Bolusing on vet advice, xl vets do a mineral mentor thing, where the blood test a number of sheep and take a forage sample and advise on mineral supplements
Good video David our ewes were a little bit lighter this year a tupping time but we drenched them with levafas and put them on silage aftermath and they're looking better already gave them a lick bucket too crystal licks PS hope Robbie has a nice time in Canada 👍
I think you should try the dosing gear, I’d say it would be a good idea, and can you a video letting the rams out and date the time of recording the video if you do for when you expect your lambs
@raymondwarrington9950 I believe the mineral drench is not as well absorbed in the gut as when given alone. Zanil is inclined to soften the dung or even run the sheep so probably worse than a normal dose...
Stand on clean yard for about half an hour after footbath. External parasites?? Mobile shower or plunge dip works well. A lot of people including myself saying ewes in poor condition this year. High moisture content of grass not helping. Enjoy your videos. Good luck for breeding season.
I had a length of foam rubber enclosed in woven polypropylene in the foot bath, so the sheep didn’t mind stepping in. I gave the mats a good wash down afterwards. I used to buy good quality powdered minerals put in a drum with a sheep’s head size hole cut in the side. A blood test would determine any deficiency. I think tailored mineral boluses could be useful for you. With the ram, the only true way to find out is a PM. If it was clostridial, the heart would show bruising shortly after death. It sounds onerous and fair to say, I only kept around a 100 breeding ewes, but I used to go through the feet carefully and thoroughly just before turnout. Mine had an issue with shelly hoof or is it white line disease? . The ewes went through a zinc sulphate with pentane dial ( that came in a bottle with a skull and crossbones) foot bath into the bulking up pen where the solution had a chance of drying on the hooves. I think the product was marketed by Nettex. That procedure saved me from the bother of having to catch or bring in lame sheep. I did also foot bath as a routine when yarding. We had a handling system with a forcing ring but your dog does a great job anyway. I have to say Lleyns are very easy to handle and please don’t take offence, but I was told by someone of sterner stuff that they are nice little lady’s sheep.
Thank you for your comment. Did you find your ewes consumed the powdered minerals by itself with no trouble? Nice little lady's sheep indeed, I feel like I'm cheating sometimes 😁
@@sheepschool365 I saw on youtube, an experiment in America, where the minerals were offered to cattle in a big feeder with each element presented in a separate compartment. The cows only consumed the ones they needed. Wild life are known to make long journeys to mineral sources known to them. I have never had an issue feeding the blended mineral powder. I found the blocks just washed away in the rain but useful in the shed.
@@sheepschool365just a thought, how is the PH going on your pastures?. We have brown acid soils that need liming every 4 to 5 years. From what I’ve seen on Sandi Brock’s (Sheepishly Me) videos, her dogs are quite good inside the barn with the sheep! 🐑😊 Oh, and I believe she also uses Hoof Sure
I use a lick bucket from Habro in Scotland, feet fertility and worm. Certainly helps with feet. I am also seeing ewes with lack of thrive, few lean ewes. I tested and had similar result to you. I think this continual wet weather and wet lush grass isn't helping. Why do you say feacal egg test not that good for fluke? I use dynamic blocks for sheep on hill but just from January to end March. Harder ground though. Back pack looks great. Enjoying your videos.
Thanks Iain. Lots of people saying that their sheep are thin due to the bad year. I believe the egg sampling isn't accurate due to the immature fluke causing death in sheep long before they become adult fluke that are releasing eggs in dung at 12 weeks after infection.
Mineral lick buckets are the most expensive way to get minerals into sheep Its a pity that your ram died it looks like he was fighting Keep up the good work your channel is very interesting and informative Thank you
