Great honest information that shows the basic calculations behind the process. Some people only focus on the high price they get for the lamb but never divulge the reality behind the costs incurred to get the high price. Keep up the good work.
I suppose the only other calculation you can make is what would they have been worth sold as stores and what are they worth now! The logistic he uses for his sums is correct, but we are assuming the would make killing price per kg as stores and that usually isn't the case can be less! Ypu turn them into a more saleable product and it depends on the store trade and the fat lamb price! Sometimes you've got to go with your gut and have a gamble, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't!
Great video and nice setup! Would love to see more about your weighing setup with tag reader and what information can be stored etc. Looking forward to more sheep videos
Thanks Davey enjoyable video, the feed / weight gain ratio seems to be about the same for us too - so this year we sold the lambs at feeder (store) weight. All the best ! Steve
Very interesting video I've been feeding the last few lambs meal this last 3weeks it does help but my word they're an expensive hobby greetings from co down Ni 👍
Your sheep seem so calm! We have Shropshire sheep and they are nutters! I have the bruises to prove it! Just discovered you last night and now making my way through your videos. Lovely accent too. You should read audio books
Hard going if you don’t have the grass for them. I’ve only a small flock and buy the nuts by the bag. €6 in 2019 and €12.50 now. They’ll be getting hay this spring and less nuts.
Hi Shane, glad you enjoyed it. Would love to try out a handling unit suitable for young lambs especially for those first few jobs at around 6weeks old...
Great work been done. I'm enjoying your videos. Fair play. What breed of sheep are the ewes and the lambs out of them? They look nice and uniform. Ewes look like a belclare or llynn ish type cross put to a Texel ram from what I can see. I've Suffolk x cheviot ewes myself.
Lamb is a lovely meat and pricey on a hotel menu, the commercial production cost is a killer to viability at farm level irrespective of scale, the sheep farmers are still at it for interest sake but off farm jobs are keeping them afloat
Lambs convert feed much better up to 14wks especially with a cobalt bolus from Mayo.We finish lambs from Welsh Mules crossed with high index Suffolk rams achieving daily live weight gain of 380gms a day eating creep feed and mothers milk and grass🐑🏴👍
Hi John, Agree 100%. Conversion ratios are much better in younger lambs. Have never creep fed lambs, try to work off grass based system but sometimes the poorer performing lambs are left around when the grass growth slows..
Hi Shane, welcome to the channel! Please bear in mind I select rams for producing breeding females not factory lambs, which I'm sure a different selection process would apply. Rams I keep for breeding must be structurally correct i.e good teeth, good feet and legs. I also try to keep them from older sheep that consistently rear 2 good lambs as they have longevity and should be less inclined to fall apart with mastitis, prolapse, feet problems or any other health issues. I avoid singles or triplets. Of course they must look nice too!
Without a price rise there is no money finishing lambs but on the law of averages most years the price will rise which will be your profit however this year the trade doesn’t seem to optimistic
Hi John, had some feet trouble if the pen got dirty and dung caked around the feet but very few problems when pens were kept well bedded. I replaced the original scales clock with the hanging load cell and trutest clock myself. It is a fairly simple job...👍
Hi Cameron, the APR 600 is a super bit of kit. Great for recording everything from lambing, movements off farm, weights and comments. No more pen and paper anymore...👌
Hi Kevin, it's an APR 600 reader. Great for recording loads of different data using the keypad but I believe there are cheaper ones available without the keypad.

Great video. The Irish will! Was amazed at your setup on your open day. Looking forward to a few videos.
Nice and informative video indeed I have been wondering about the high prices of sheep here in the Middle East but now I know it's all about feeding

Hi mate nee to your channel, and I am enjoying it cheers . I do have a question how do you determine what you would keep for a breeding ram thankyou.
Hi Shane, welcome to the channel! Please bear in mind I select rams for producing breeding females not factory lambs, which I'm sure a different selection process would apply.
Rams I keep for breeding must be structurally correct i.e good teeth, good feet and legs. So, if you’re buying culls, not for breeding and they’re older or have issues, will you sell them for meat? Is there a viable market for older mutton?
Yes. All older sheep go into food chain and there in a stable market for mutton. An old fat sheep can be worth as much as a prime factory fit lamb...
Without a price rise there is no money finishing lambs but on the law of averages most years the price will rise which will be your profit however this year the trade doesn’t seem to optimistic
Hi Liam, couldn't agree more. Farming really is professional gambling...
Time to put your sheep out to pasture and hope for a better price. have a great day friend.
Thanks for the Sub @southtexas777
Check out my latest video. It outlines the pasture based option.
@@sheepschool365 Yes sir I have seen it. We started breeding Wagyu Cattle for the Market. Good luck sir, give us a look if you have a chance.
Was just waiting for that ram lamb to immediately jump over the gate and break it again!
serious set up. Where did you get the hanging meal troughs, or the brackets for the pipes? looking about something like that myself
Hi Enda, I made all the barriers, gates and those brackets myself. The meal troughs are 200mm pvc pipes split in half...
@@sheepschool365 did you pop rivet them brackets on to the pipe or bolt them?
@@endabmcaleer3697 Bolted on with 6mm bolts.
Any foot issues from feeding indoors? Did you fit the digital clock to the scales yourself?

Known as a pig mouth down our country!
What type of scanner is it (make) and what type of scale reader is.I have the same type o
I have the same type of scale works well
Hi William, reader is an Agrident APR 600. Weight clock is a Trutest eziweigh 7.
What tag reader is that? Cheers

Labour or love
Definitely sheep love 😀
Great set up . Where did u get the hanging feeders. They are a great job.
@@robertmcdermott241 Thanks Robbie, made everything myself in the shed.
