- "Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie" is a passion project by independent filmmakers James Rolfe and Kevin Finn, based on the popular web series. The film is being produced outside the studio system, entirely funded by fan donations. Principle photography took place in Spring of 2012, in the Los Angeles area, with Jason Brewer as the DP. Additional filming is taking place on the East Coast. Editing is in its early stages.
The film is a science fiction / adventure that is based loosely on the famous Atari video game burial of 1982. Atari produced a game based on the biggest blockbuster movie of that year, E.T., and rushed it to meet the deadline for the Christmas shopping season. It was a commercial failure and millions of unsold game cartridges were buried in a desert landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Coincidentally, it's not too far from Roswell, the landing site of a different kind of E.T.
The Trailer features music by Bear McCreary (Battlestar Gallactica, The Walking Dead). The track is called "Maverick Regeneration" and can be downloaded as part of the Play for Japan album. All proceeds go to help earthquake victims in Japan.

The film is expected to be completed in 2013, but only time will tell. Independent films take a long time to finish. This one is no exception. It's eventually expected to be released on DVD and/or Blu-ray, and to be available around the world, after showing to some live audiences in theater venues. Digital downloads is also an option. The immediate goal is to finish the film first.

It's a weird movie, but I enjoyed it for the most part. It's quite an accomplishment for even existing at all, and I think James and everyone involved should definitely be proud of it.
Guys, calm down and stop telling James to hurry up with the film. It's an independent film, with old school special effects and the like. I'm looking forward to the film too, but still. if he hurries, it could turn out to be a piece of crap, so let him take his time with the film. Also, he's got his wife, infant daughter, cats, personal life and Nerd episodes to work on.

Purple Potion If you want a movie as bad as ET was as a game on the 2600, keep asking James to rush it. Seriously the more he push the release, the better the product would be. Movies are like Dishes: If you take your time, you'll get a great dish but if you rush the cook time by increasing the temperature, you'll ruin your dish up and be forced to throw it away.

I actually kind of like the idea of this movie using mostly practical effects than CG effects. This movie is obviously going for a more cheesy 80's style for the comical and retro factor, which will make this movie very entertaining. I have a feeling there won't be a moment watching this that won't leave you with a smile on your face, even if you don't know the Nerd.
In any case, I've been a fan for years, and will be looking forward to picking this up day one.

My husband from the Netherlands bought the movie online for us; I was very pleased! Very AVGN style. The low budget they had was appropriate for all the old games he's played and made it quite fun. The acting's pretty good too and it's quite funny. THANK YOU, JAMES!!!

There were many obvious bumps and things that if it were a movie without the background story it has it wouldn't stand on it's own, but I honestly do think it goes well with what AVGN is all about. It's b-movie style and I guess you like it or hate it.

Same. I wouldn't say it was perfect but not every movie is perfect and this wasn't meant to be a high definition movie. It was meant to have cheesy CGI and I thought it story was very good and very AVGN haha :)

This isn’t the best movie, but I read Jame’s autobiography discussing the production of the movie and how difficult it was. So I have a little more respect for the movie even through everyone talks trash about it

I watched this a while ago and thought it looked bad. I was a fan from when he started and lost track after awhile. Watching this again, I think I get it. When you think of AVGNs style, and what he's pulling from, this movie seems perfect. It's supposed to be cheesy, it's supposed to make you laugh at the bad effects and stuff. I want to see it.
This is truly a movie lovers movie, I will love it no matter what, just based on the heart that went into it.
Plot twist: The Nerd reviews the game, and then decides "Actually, I'm starting to like this game. What a shitload of fuck that is."

The first 20 seconds of this trailer are really solid, but then with the introduction of new characters and dumbed down, flat humor, it doesn't have my hopes at the highest.

Just watched this movie again after not having seen it for 5 years (thanks for the info Steam), and I still totally love it. I feel like the genuine love and passion just flows out of every frame. I was 14 when this trailer was uploaded. I loved it when it came out, but now ten years on (and actually working in television myself), I feel like I can appreciate it in a whole new way. This movie was and still is a massive achievement worth every ounce of respect.
While the random token sidekicks were the greatest weakness of this movie, it lacked in pretty much everything the fans where expecting. I was a young teen back when it came out, and all I really remember is my disappointment after finishing it.

WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS
It was bad, reallllllly bad. Pretty sure even James knows it sucks, because he never talks about it or brings it up. I wouldn't doubt if he feels some degree of embarrassment and almost certainly wishes he did some things different. But I love James and at least he got it done.
James even said himself, "Even if it turns out to be the worst movie ever it doesn't matter, it's just something I wanted to do." He went overly ambitious, made a film full of all the things he likes, went to Hollywood to make it and screened it in theatres with audiences that reacted so positively he included an audience reaction track on the DVD release . He lived out his dream and even said that he watched it and found it entertaining so no matter the criticism after the fact, he got what he wanted out of it.

To take the crass, over-the-top scenes out of the movie would be to remove its roots. Remember the scene where the nerd shat all over the Friday the 13th game? Or the time he shat all over Bugs Bunny? How about the time he shat in that kids Halloween bag or the multiple times where the punchline was that he spat beer everywhere?
They weren't that well-made scenes, and they could have been funnier, but they were classic AVGN. The scene pays homage to AVGN, and to take it out would be to ignore where the movie came from.
