I loved this song as a young teen. Not knowing what the lyrics meant. Now at 64, it brings tears to my eyes. Knowing the meaning of the song! You are NOT alone with the tears, Ashley!!!!
Same here. I lived this myself being at work and school when my kids were young. I rarely had time to do much with them and my wife. I deeply regret it now. Chasing money is a waste of time, you'll never have enough.
It happened to me and my Dad,it takes many years to realize the true meaning and message this song has, my Dad is gone now along with my Mom and youngest sister, I think of them every day and wish the hell I spent more time with them, but that's life I guess and I was just trying to live it 😢
I've loved this song since it came out in the 70's, and as a grandparent now I've yet to hear another song that so clearly speaks to the importance of being in your kids lives as much as possible right from the start. They grow up so quickly, and you don't want to spend your later years regretting what you didn't do.
Sis don’t you ever apologize for crying. Your human, your allowed to feel real emotions. I commend you for letting those raw real emotions out. I just want to send you a great big hug all the way from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Don’t ever apologize. I cried with ya. And I’ve heard the song so many times. ♥️💖💜

A lovely young lady with a deep and rich "heart" full of love for her family and understanding of life lessons that songs often give. Beautiful reaction.
No need to apologize!! I am 66 years old and have loved this song since I was a teenager and it does get to you when you hear this song! Kids do grow up so fast and now I have grandchildren that are growing fast as well and they live 11 hours from us so it’s hard. We have to make the time count for sure! ❤
Cautionary tale and a powerful one. I have no doubt there are countless people over the years that made some extra time for their kids with this song still in their head.
Another great singer songwriter & storyteller. I had his "Greatest Stories Live" double album. "Cat's In The Cradle" is his most famous piece. "Taxi" was another big hit for Harry Chapin. Ten years later he followed it up with "Sequel" showing what happened to the 2 people in the story. He had so many great songs such as "W·O·L·D", "Mr. Tanner", "Mail Order Annie", "They Call Her Easy", "I Wanna Learn A Love Song", "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas", "Shooting Star", "Halfway To Heaven", "Six String Orchestra", "Dreams Go By", "Remember When The Music", "Story Of A Life". We lost him too young in a car accident in 1981 at the age of 38. He left a great legacy of music.
Bless your beautiful heart. As a father, this song hits me in the feels every time. Please dont apologize for having feelings. Beautiful, heartfelt reaction. ❤
Wow, I'm 57 and never saw the interview and how much it changed their life, just wow! And what would the father/son relationship have been like especially not knowing the Dad was going to die so young. How many relationships did this one song save? Maybe even more now and in the future with lovely young people like yourself taking a chance on "old school" music. I'm very impressed with YOU, new subscriber here! Love from Texas 💝
A++... we used to ride to Houston from Dallas and back then no black radio til you reach houston😂... when I heard this song it made me tear up every time watching my daddy drive as he unknowingly didn't know I was staring thinking that one day he was gonna die.... he didn't notice me though... Everytime I heard this song it still affects me to this day😢😢😢.... he's in heaven now... 😢😢😅
The wife gave Harry a gift by writing this before his son was born. Either a gift or a warning. Harry got the words when he saw his son for the first time. It is a song that never gets old, and the lesson was passed on. My pop was always part of our lives. He even gave up a couple of promotions because the kids didn''t want to move, and deep down, I don't think he wanted to give up roots we had put down. Even in his dementia in his 80s, the only question he repeatedly asked was, "Are you ok?"Although he'd ask you 20 times, it showed you his true heart and what was the only thing on his mind.
one of my all time favorite songs. Incredible song , I am a 53 yr old dude , and it brings a tear to my eye from time to time, reminds me of my grandpa who raised me
I taught my kids that even one quality day spent with your kids can affect your family for generations. Both my kids are grown and living their best lives on the opposite coast but always find time to call and text.....I am truly a blessed man.
The switch in the chorus after the 3rd verse that goes from "When you coming home dad" to "When you coming home son" and they both said they don't know get me everytime.
As a father of 2 young daughters, this song hits hard for me as well. I have to balance working to make sure they are taken care of but also spending quality time with them. Never apologize for showing emotion that has been evoked because you are a parent. Your reaction was beautiful and real. I loved it. Keep up the great work!
As a father of 4 boys, I tear up every time I hear this song. As a musician, I can't sing this song even at karaoke without my voice breaking. It's THAT kind of song. When my son was in high school, he used these lyrics for a dramatic reading in one of his classes. When he finished, there were a few seconds of silence, and then massive applause from the other students. Some students had tears. He got an A for the reading. His teacher told him it was amazing - all his classmates were hanging on every word as he spoke. Me personally, I didn't even know he knew this song. Proud Dad Moment!
My wife and I went to a Harry concert shortly before his death. We brought a grocery bag a of canned goods with us because he was collecting for his WhyHunger Foundation in the lobby. He was a beautiful human and a spectacular storyteller. Gone way too soon. “Harry, Keep the Change”
I raised 9 children, I always made sure I was as present as finances allowed. They all live with 10 miles of me now and visit me every weekend. 5 grandchildren are with me a lot. This song meant a lot to me when I was young. My dad was present and available.
Wonderful reaction. It's ok to "Cry" it's a part of being human. I'm now 52 going on 53 in dec - I have always cried when I hear this and first heard it when I was 18.
Loved your heartfelt reaction. I remember as a little boy sitting next to my dad in the car listening to this song and he told me to really listen to the words of this song…now I know why.
A very standard reaction to this song. Probably one of the most influential songs to come out of the pop era, has changed lives around the world for decades.
I'm 76 years old and I LOVED my dad. I didn't call him nearly as often as I should have (no cell phones then). These days, my kids tend to text us rather than call us. Dad has been gone for 35 years and there is never a day that I don't think of him. I would give anything to hear my dad's voice again. Texting reminds me of "Cats in the Cradle" in the fact it is like saying, I don't have time to talk to you. Tell your kids to call you and not text you.
There's a phrase that describes this song: Living in the next moment. It's another way of not being in the present. As Ferris Bueller once said, "Live moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around, you might miss it."
This song did a lot to make me a better parent. I'm sure many others from my generation would say the same. I was 10 when it was new but I got the message. Nothing is more important for your kids than you being with them. Actually being there. Money isn't as important as your time.
In 1983 I was deployed to Beirut Lebanon with the Marine Corps. One of the guys that was in my platoon brought a guitar and we were all sitting outside our bunker and he started playing this song, and we all started singing the song, one of the guys recorded us singing and the guy playing the guitar sent the recording to a DJ he knew in Maine and they played it on the radio station. A few months later a terrorist suicide bomber blew up the Marine barracks in Beirut. Now every time I hear this song I think about the dads who died over there who’s sons never got to see their dad again or in some cases never even knew their dad because they were born while they were deployed to Beirut.
Hi Ashley, I saw Harry play at a lunchtime concert in our theater at my college in NYC in 1974. I didn’t know him then but my friends did and said I had to go. My next class was 2pm so I had the time, or so I thought. My friends knew his song Taxi which was a small hit but big locally as Harry played a lot around NYC. Needless to say the concert turned into one of the best of my life. He went long and I cut my 2pm American History class as nothing there was changing and I already knew what I was experiencing. Cats was just about to come out and I assume he played it but I don’t remember. When it became a hit that year (#1 on Billboard Hot 100) then I knew. When Harry was killed in that car crash it was devastating. First John, murdered then Harry in the crash then Karen from anorexia. The early 80’s was rough, musically for me. You need to do Taxi, and keep some more tissues handy. Harry’s songs aren’t dance around and have fun, usually. But they hit hard when they connect. Go watch the opening segment again without concern you were on the wrong video, it’s strong, knowing what happened. I’m going to also make another different request based on you covering Carpenters. That’s how I initially found you and Harry was a personal bonus. I see you covered We’ve Only Just Begun. That’s the song but covered my a group of musicians from all over the world and a lead singer that was the reason Jim Wilkas thought it was now time to make the song he always wanted to cover. I’m not sure if I asked for this from you or not. I don’t see it. The song was just recently released on 3/2/24 Karen’s birthday in heaven, in her honor. I hope you will give this song a chance to win your heart over as this group are all Carpenters fans, including the 20 year old lead singer!! I’m an OG Carpenters fan and to me this is the finest cover of a Carpenters song, ever. Thank you for your time. Joe ruclips.net/video/J95lfJqo9VY/видео.htmlsi=o38br8zU6pIW1XIZ .
great review - this song is such a great cautionary tale - and its more relevant today than ever - people are busier than ever - so easy to lose sight of what is really important - your kids won't remember STUFF you bought them - but they will remember the time you spent with them!!!
I've LOVED that song, for longer than you've been alive! That's life in a nut-shell! If you think bout it - it's VERY sad - but SO realistic! It really makes you put things in perspective! Which is OFTEN so sad in reality!
No need for feeling sorry. But, we do miss your beautiful smile! Pushing well over 50 and this song always punches me square on the nose. Even growing up hearing it, we all realized we were living it. Nevertheless, it plays out and then is clearly and awfully true. Terrible trick of the light indeed. Blessings to all who hurt in hope for peace and pardon.
I have to add that this song has a lot of relevance to me as it does to many people. Shortly after my father passed away, unexpectedly, around 32 years ago, I heard this song on the radio when I was driving home on a Southern California freeway and busted out in tears. I knew I had to quickly change my emotions or I would have probably crashed. God rest the soul of my dad. God bless you all who have longed to have a better relationship with your fathers.
This song came out in 1974 so I have been hearing it for the bulk of my life and I still gives me the sniffles to listen to it. When I hear it I think of what I would do differently with my kids. Thanks for sharing with me. Most of the reason I watch the different reactors is I know how the songs affect me and it’s interesting to see how the songs affect a whole new generation. Good music never gets old.
These song make me cry everytime I hear it Time In Bottle, Honey, and Our Love by the Bee Gees with Andy Gibb. I just remembered one more Seasons In The Sun by Steven Jacks. This will make you cry from jump. He best friend is saying goodbye because he's dying from cancer.
Being a single parent for my oldest son for 12 years, I can relate to this song. I worked every moment I could get to make ends meet. On days off I would put him on my bicycle and ride around town with him. I worked the overnight shift and most of the time he was at the babysitter's while I worked and while I slept. When the sitter wasn't available, I would have him play in the bed while I tried to sleep. Even today, I am retired, and he walks to work and calls me when he needs a ride to or from work when the weather is bad. I don't hesitate to pick him up.
Harry was an amazing storyteller. Yes his songs always seemed to have a sadness but they drew you in and made you think. Best concert I was ever at was in Tulsa the whole band missed the plane and it was just Harry singing and telling stories so absolutely amazing. Still remember the day he died. Where I was what I was doing. The next day an old girlfriend who I had taken to the concert in Tulsa, she was married then, called me up to make sure I was al right, knowing how much his music meant to me. A couple of other songs I think you will enjoy, A Better Place To Be, and I Want To Learn A Love So g.
I'm nearly 70 years old now and have three children, now all grown with kids of their own. Just as my dad did, I spent a lot of time with my kids. Now I get to watch my kids raising their own and spending time with them. That's how it should be, over and over. The best two things a father can give his children is his time, and especially showing them how I love their mother.
I get choked up every time I watch a video of Harry singing this song. He was a top, top favorite of mine. As a suggestion, another song along the same emotional level, might wish to check out Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle". Very touching and beautiful. Jim as well met with a tragic end, and knowing this adds even more empathy to the song as well.
I was a teenager when this came out and I didn't appreciate the lyrics as much as I do now at 63. Made me tear up but also grateful that I had those moments with my mom and dad.
So often we as humans prioritize the wrong things in our lives companies will not remember you when you leave but your kids will remember more than we know Love your heart young lady great reaction
Young people- this s the "secret" : You have to MAKE memories...cooking together, putting something together, trying to camp (LOL!),we used to go Christmas caroling too. If you did that today though you'd be in the news as "missing persons" . We gotta stop all this hatred andenjoy each other and take chances to love before it's too late. LOVE!!!
My two Daughters are 36yrs and 19yrs old married and I have 4 grandchildren and I was a sailor for 30yrs I missed a lot.Now I am RETIRED trying to catch up.

I took this song to heart as a Mom. Yes I've cried! We can both be gone too long! Not just a Dad. 😢
Time is so precious and fleeting. We think we have all the time in the world and before you know it........aw man😢
Very beautiful song and a very beautiful reaction. Thank you
Gr8 reaction! This song can make anyone a better parent, while there's still time...
If this doesn't make you cry, your heart is cold. It's such a good song.
Ashley you're a beautiful woman and human. You're part of what the world needs more of
These song make me cry everytime I hear it Time In Bottle, Honey, and Our Love by the Bee Gees with Andy Gibb. I just remembered one more Seasons In The Sun by Steven Jacks. This will make you cry from jump. He best friend is saying goodbye because he's dying from cancer.
This song still makes me cry after all these years ...
After hearing this song a thousand times it still gets to me every single time.
Of the hundreds of similar channels and thousands of reactions out there, this is the most honest I've seen.
Truly… he owned it.. embrace it
Harry was an amazing storyteller.
It's gets everyone. No need to apologize.
Instant tears the moment I hear the start of the song...
I've heard this song dozens of times and loved it each time. Your emotions touched me in way where I felt it a bit deeper. Thank you.
I'm 68 and I still cry whenever I hear it
You alright. I been crying and living that song since I first heard it in the 70's. I'm now 62. You ok!!! My musical taste is like yours. ❤❤❤
Props for being REAL. Thank you.
That's what music is meant for....to touch people and make them feel. God bless you girl. Thank you sharing YOU with us. ❤
I heard this song for the first time in 1975. It drew tears from me then and it draws tears today. Wonderful reaction dear lady.
There’s no need to apologize for crying. It just shows you have a sweet heart.
Music is the universal language. Harry chapin was quite a musician and story teller.
Ashley no need to apologize, everyone cries with this song ... Jesus bless you and your family

I was a teenager when this came out and I didn't appreciate the lyrics as much as I do now at 63. Made me tear up but also grateful that I had those moments with my mom and dad.
I’m 65 and still get emotional every time I hear this.
This song really really hurts every time I hear it. When life comes full circle, you know, but time is too gone away and usually unforgiven.
So often we as humans prioritize the wrong things in our lives companies will not remember you when you leave but your kids will remember more than we know
Love your heart young lady great reaction
With this reaction you deeply touched my heart. Thank you.
Its ok sweetie ! No need to say sorry . We love ya, tears and all. God bless😎
A beautiful young woman with a smile that would light up the state of Texas on any night cowboys and her music is the best on RUclips cowboys👍
I had a dad who worked a lot and as a still working father, grandfather and great grandfather this song hits hard and at home
Like another great artist said in his song,Eddie Money,…. I wanna go back, and do it all over, but I can’t go back I know.”Keep your heart,my dear.
LOVE!!!
