Russ, thanks for this great interview. As a fellow business owner in the bicycle industry, I have great empathy for Jude and her challenges. She said it well.

How lucky you are in Portland to have wheel-builder like Jude. Great interview. I found the details about carbon rims very useful. Thank you.

I, too, enjoyed this video. I agree, Jude is a good egg here and provides an informative and engaging interview. I most enjoyed her comments as a small business person talking about the challenges of operating a shop. The questions were good .... one of the questions I would have asked, how did she get started, if she'd had previous experience working in a bike shop or retail, and how she grew the business over the eight yrs. Bravo, and thanks!

A wonderful interview as always. Wheels have always been the way I choose who works on my bikes .. short of myself. And a great time to be in the wheel building business with the advent of carbon rims, disc brakes and wide cross section multi-purpose tires. A big thumbs up to Jude!

I love to build wheels. I built the wheels on my road and mountain bike. Wheel building can be therapeutic. This was a great interview. I would love to build wheels for a living. Thanks.

Nice job Russ! Sugar is Jude ... she plays it down, but she and the shop are successful! In addition to building wheels Jude holds classes on the art of wheel building, and there she really demonstrates her mastery of wheel building and clearly enjoys teaching others about the craft. I learned and built a set of wheels during a recent weekend class, one of the best off the bike cycling experiences I've ever had.Besides building a set of wheels, I learned why custom wheels are worth seeking out and paying for ... they are carefully made, will last, and will provide many trouble free miles.
Jude and Sugar Wheel Works are an ingredient of the wonderful Portland cycling community.

need a shop like that around here. Due to restrictive distribution channels for hoops, decent wheels are impossible to get now unless you're talking full carbon race wheels. Believe it or not, you can't even buy mavic hoops without going out of town. There are machine built wheels with mavics but nobody will hand build one without paying a high premium because they need to go out of their way to get parts.

All my wheels on all my bikes are hand built. Handbuilds are cheaper in the long run. Thats what I tell my partner when I have to re-rim and re-spoke a wheel. My expensive wheels have Royce Hubs. It didn't look like they where on the board. Is it me or are people excited about the new Mavic open pro?
