- The song that starts off George's first solo album All Things Must Pass! Written in collaboration with Bob Dylan, this love ballad features Eric Clapton on lead electric guitar
Eric used his 1956 Fender Stratocaster 'Brownie' into a Fender Tweed Champ amplifier. This was his main setup for recording in 1970, as heard on his own solo album and Layla. His tone is soft and warm in the verses, but brighter and crunchier on the choruses. I messed around with different pickup positions and settled on neck pickup for this cover
I'm using my '63 custom shop stratocaster into a REAL 1962 Tweed Champ amp. I'm plugged into input 1, volume knob is on 4. The great thing about these amps is when you find the sweet spot on the single knob. Picking soft with my right hand yields lush clean tones, while digging in during the choruses gives that brighter overdriven crunch
The session notes list many acoustic guitarists on this song. Phil Spector produced the album and used his signature wall of sound technique, which sometimes had up to 5 guitarists playing similar chords to create big sounds
But when I dissected the isolated acoustics, I'm only hearing two distinct acoustic guitars. It's possible there were more in the background, ambiently mic'd up. The session notes list Harrison, and all 4 members of the group Badfinger on acoustic guitars
I hear a 12-string acoustic on the left channel, doing simple down strums. And a 6-string on the right channel, which was most likely George on his Gibson J-200. For this cover, I only recorded two acoustics- my 1967 Gibson B-25-12 12-string, and my 1970's Ibanez J-200 clone

All Things Must Pass is one of my all time favourites albums, love this song. you do a great cover. I've always loved vibrato. Paul Kossoff is my favourite guitar player, Clapton once asked him how he achieved such a good vibrato.

I’ve been waiting for this one, beautifully done. The note choice, bends, and vibrato always sounded george-ish to me. I think I remember reading something Dhani said about george playing it on Lucy, but he could’ve been mistaken too.
It’s been confirmed that it was Eric by a lot of sources. Historians, session notes, but also from George himself

Am surprised the les paul wasn’t used in this song. But it makes sense it’s a strat. Those licks can be only be produced by strats
Paul and John are very overlooked in their Solo careers compared to Harrison. George is a very underrated solo musician, my favorite solo songs from all the 4 Beatles are mostly George's 😅

I could not figure out how in the hell Clapton was getting all of those sounds in that recording. How did you figure out all of that? Its not in the tablature. Or I don’t understand how to read it? Anyway, that sounds great! Good job!
