Wah Wah- George Harrison (Guitar Cover)

- Here's a rocker from George Harrison's first solo album All Things Must Pass (1970). He wrote this in January 1969, after briefly leaving the Beatles during the fraught Twickenham sessions. Wah Wah refers to a headache or pain, but also the Wah Wah guitar pedal heard on the song
The backing track was the first song recorded for the 1970 sessions, on May 28th. George played the rhythm electric guitar, Eric Clapton played a Les Paul with wah-wah pedal, and three acoustic guitars were played by three members of the Apple group Badfinger. Afterwards, George overdubbed slide guitar using his 1961 Fender 'Rocky' Stratocaster
It's not 100% clear which guitar George used for the electric guitar that kicks off the song. I did lots of tests using my Les Paul, Casino and Strat into my Fender Champ (an amp used on All Things Must Pass) but couldn't quite nail it. After more tests, my Stratocaster into my 1965 Fender Bassman amp got the closest. I'm using my 2022 Fender Custom Shop '63 Sonic Blue Journeyman Strat, an Analogman King of Tone pedal for overdrive, into the normal channel of the Fender Bassman
Eric Clapton most likely used a Les Paul. Either the 1957 'Lucy' Les Paul Standard that he gave to George, or a Black Beauty Custom. He used a wah pedal, probably a Vox or Crybaby. I'm using my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard, Teese RMC Picture Wah into the 1965 Fender Bassman. I'm also using the Analogman King of Tone for Eric's part
The band Badfinger played acoustic guitar on a lot of the All Things Must Pass album, as well as at the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. Pete Ham, Joey Molland and Tom Evans (the whole band, sans drummer) played simultaneously on Wah Wah. They used two six string acoustics, and a 12-string acoustic. It's possible one of them used George's Gibson J-200, but otherwise it's a bit of a mystery. I'm using my 1969 Martin 00-18, 1967 Gibson B-25 12 string, and an early 1970's Ibanez Jamboree 698. This is a high quality copy of a Gibson J-200, and my first time using this guitar!
George certainly used his Rocky Stratocaster for slide guitar. This was the Sonic Blue Fender he used in the Beatles, starting with the 1965 Help! album. In 1967 he painted it psychedelic colors. This became the guitar he used the most for slide until his death, starting with this very song in 1970. He used a Fender Champ amp for most of the slide parts on All Things Must Pass. I'm plugging my Strat directly into a 1962 Fender Tweed Champ. Amp volume is at 8.5, so it's crunching up nicely. As for most of George's slide songs, he is tuned to open E: EBEGsharpBE
The album was produced by Phil Spector at Abbey Road Studios, and he famously used a lot of reverb and echo on all the songs. I'm using my Abbey Road Plates plug-in to replicate this thick wall-of-sound mess

This has got to be one of the best George Harrison songs.
It sure is one of the best songs of all times
100% agreed, since the first listen it’s had a grip on me like no other, that riff is TOO fkn good man
way too underrated. the clapton wah wah pedal and george on the slide is unmatchable.
I just discovered this one two days ago unintentionally! Best thing ever!!! Paw Paw is a die hard beatles fan, and he raised me. So I grew up loving the music of the 50s - 70s. I've played this every bit of 20 times every day. I'm really anxious for my daughters to get home from their weekend with Paw Paw so I can pull this one up to jam out with.
For God's sake, Peter Frampton went totally uncredited on All Things Must Pass. Most lively because he was still with Humble Pie. There was an interview that I'm sure exists somewhere that I saw in the 70s. George said to Peter, play the lead on WahWah. Peter started the interview by saying that he tried hiding and playing low in the background. George stopped the song and told him at that very point. It's amazing that now, years later, hes listed in wiki when most never knew that info til the internet age. So, what are the chances that he played on any song in general or what he did? Clapton was obvious one of the other players. This is the same as the Beatles, lol. Till this day, parts are still argued over. George liked giving people a chance to shine and took the back seat quite often as a result. Peter was and still is a terrific musician, not just a guitarist. Heres a footnote. Peter Drake used the talk box to tune his pedal steel. Peter became taken by the talkbox. So much so that we all here it on the comes alive album. Joey was also pretty good with the guitar. If there was a question as to playing on a song, they surely would favor Eric first and George second. I'm not arguing this point. It is simply from an old interview that I recalled as a boy
That riff is killer. Awesome.
This is by far the most accurate Wah-Wah cover that I have ever heard. I don't know how to do it, but you can capture the exact sounds as in recordings.
Happy Playing!
George Rocky's opening rhythm, Clapton's Wah and George's slides work and that solo that screams like a big band Horns and Saxophones, it's so Bombastic like Headache, Love It.
Clapton DID NOT PLAY THE WAH WAH....surpise, it was Peter frampton
@@crazyantny9161 any sources? also Clapton playing the Wah on "Art Of Dying", you can hear his tone and his style, Frampton plays more acoustic guitars then electric on this album
@@crazyantny9161 according to Mal Evan’s session notes from May 28 1970- George and Eric played electric, Pete ham/Joey molland/Tom Evans played acoustics. Frampton was not on this song
@@sampopkin when can i find his sessions notes?
@@sampopkin also Mal's birthday was the day before
FINALLY! The riff is addictive. I am thoroughly impressed considering Phil Spector’s mess 😅
Exactly!!!
that's why the 2020 mix is the best!!!! no more wall of sound thanks to dhani and paul hicks :)
@@MrMariofan109 yep! I love that mix so much! I can actually listen to it really loud and still have my hearing by the end 🥲
Yeah I know sometimes you can’t hear George’s guitar like on “awaiting on you all “ I had to look up where it’s isolated, it’s a nice chord progression

It’s about time someone on here has done this song justice! Nicely done Sam!!
Thanks Dom!
The George Harrison album is a classic but can’t forget about Wah Wah, great cover as always.
Can’t stop watching this , I’m amazed at how the guy as got every part down to perfection , even the guitar sounds are bang on. Well done Sam .
Cheers!
A choir of 6 beautiful guitars! This masterfully brought out the genius of this song!
I realize that the point in the name "Wah-Wah" is that there's a "wah-wah" sound, but it DOMINATES the song.
One of my all time favorite guitar tracks from George. Thanks. Nice to hear it without Phil's over dub, unintended, distortion.
Nice work, as usual. I think it's clever that George took a wah-wah guitar pedal and transformed it into a song.
There’s so much going on in this song, hats off to you for pulling off such a fantastic performance of it.
Thanks also for giving us an insight into the song and it’s construction.
Appreciate it!
Your rendition of Wah Wah causes me to appreciate even more both George's songwriting and your musical artistry. Wonderful!
Nice work! I wish George Harrison's version was more laid back on the reverb like your version is. I think it's a more enjoyable song without that insane reverb space and I really wish they had remixed a version with less reverb as George Harrison had been interested in doing when they were doing one of the remastered editions. It is a shame it wasn't one of the bonus tracks.
Amazing job Sam! This song is terrific, and it's incredibly intricate in it's guitar parts, which are somewhat hard to make out in the original mix...
appreciate you showing the inlay of the wah pedal dude, makes it way easier to finally learn in full!
Man the songs have been my favourite recently. If you did all those years ago or love comes to everyone this year would be the best as far as content goes!
Definitely going to do those. Somewhere in England and GH 79 are two of my fav albums ever
@@sampopkin The Lord Loves The One...from Material World would be great if you're taking requests.
Finally a cover of this song by a profesional youtuber! It deserves it. Great rendition;)
You nailed this amazing song, one on a level with the best of the Lennon-McCartney catalog. Congratulations!
The riff sounds so vicious 😅
Another killer job, Sam! Looking forward to some more George's solo songs
This is one of the best things I have ever seen on the internet.
This is absolutely brilliant, you totally nailed it , love it love love it love it
incredible playing!
Thanks man!
Yesss finally someone who actually knows how to play the solo I can finally learn the whole song
Sam, love this song & it is a hidden gem on All Things. Great performance- obviously everyone else feels the same! Well done sir!
Brilliant! Huge thanks for covering this song in its entirety, not many people have done so and with this much accuracy.
0:27 - 0:57 as somebody who obtained a lot of influence from chord progressions from Radiohead, hearing that rhythm section with the 7 shapes rocked me to my core. I have so many songs that use the same type of b string add ons to major/7 bar chord shapes on the E string, so it gave me the goosebumps to see that Harrison had such an indie/bluesy like vibe to his songs from so many years ago. Paul or John were too focused on their basic forms that Harrison really let his augment/diminished/add progressions shine on this debut!
I just really love that F#7 shape. It’s such a great sound. It’s defiant
early beatles they really went crazy with those crazy chord shapes, john especially. Im happy just to dance with you has augmented chords, till there was you has 9th chords, augmented, aven a 7add9 chord at one point. Any song john wrote was littered with 7 chords too, you can see it in the music videos. if anything george learned it from them
Cadd9 is the last chord on No Reply. On Every Little Thing, the solo is done on G Bm G
YES! One of my favourite songs of all time. Thank you so much Sam.
Thank you!
Hermoso...simplemente hermoso y perfecto 💚
Mi canción preferida de George Harrison
This has got to be one of the best covers of George honestly I would kill to collab with either you or Juodet having done beatles vocal recreations before
Do you have a RUclips channel? You can message me on insta @shire_plucker
I got to say, What a great performance!!
Congrats, really!!
Of a kind of underrated song of George, it's like a guitars orchestra!!
The slide 2nd solo is just majestic!!
You nailed it man!!
Keep on!!
What a fabulous guitar accompaniment! Absolutely nailed the riffs. Thoroughly loved listening to and watching this video. My favourite arrangement of Wah-Wah is the 'Concert for George' version, but this comes very close & now my second favourite Wah-Wah video. Well done. Excellent!
Thanks!
Sam … WOW! Once again absolutely incredible performance! U R SO talented! You and I and many others ❤️ George’s work! Your dedication to recreating their music is truly incredible! THANX!
Didn't know this song. Is really beautiful! And your cover, brilliant. Congratulations!!
Spectacular .. dead nuts… spot on.. perfect. Great video and perfect execution of one of the all time greatest musicians in the world and dude.. YOU NAILED! Thank you.
Here it is. My favourite solo by Harrison. There is simply no way to make it sound NOT like Harrison. I learned it in standard but you’re playing it in open E. Simply wonderful Sam!
Hey man, your covers are so good, please do I Found Out by John Lennon, that would be awesome! Thanks for your content
Brilliant cover as always Sam!!! You nailed the tone and playing on george's guitar, sounds like its lifted straight from the record!
what a delightful collection of sounds. congrats man, beautiful cover as always
Was never able to see and hear the guitarpart clapton was playing. supercool man! great job
Unfriggenbeleavable thats got to be the greatest guitar playing ive ever had the pleasure to hear OMG !!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Amazing work.
Excellent sound! In my opinion, George has the best sounding songs out of all the Beatles solo careers. Videos like this prove my opinion. Absolutely fantastic! Hopefully isn’t it a pity gets a video down the line.
Thanks David! I agree George mastered guitar playing AND tones throughout his career. Even lesser known albums like Somewhere in England and Gone Troppo have amazing slide playing
@@sampopkin I agree absolutely. Thirty Three & 1/3 has some good slide playing as well.
One of my favorite songs and you played so well!!!!
George Harrison was an outstanding guitar player and composed many great 2:08 songs and riffs. He’s equally good on slide guitar. Lennon and McCartney both knew how great he was. Eric Clapton once said Harrison knew more guitar chords than anyone else.
You do it great man, i like this song so much
This is just great!
Many thanks, this is brilliant ❤🎉
This is wonderfully wonderfully great! Thank you.
Straight up one of my all time favorite riffs excellent cover as always
Awesome Sam!
finally! I've waited so long for this.
Incredible job!
Outstanding!!!!!!!
Sam, you're an amazing young man. Great work!
Awesome cover, would love to see the art of dying next, since we’re on the George Harrison train
Amazingly well done.
Very, very well done! 👏👏👏
Awesome!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
A monumental job. Thank you so much. And I mean, REALLY
Amazing. Very well done.
Thank you so much.
Really wonderful.
This was awesome!
You're incredible! Fabulous cover as usual!!!!
Absolute perfection!! I loved it!! I’ve been a Beatle fan since before the Ed Sullivan show and became a fan of all their music after they split up. (Except some of John’s stuff). He was going through some hard times. But anyway I play with a group here in Hawaii and we play many of George’s songs with the Beatles and his solo stuff. You do an incredible job in reproducing all his stuff as well as the others!!!
Great riff!
Was waiting for I‘d Have You Anytime 🥲 but still a great track and a gorgeous cover Sam 👌🏼
I know I promised that😔 Will come soon
That would be fire but no stress bro, I‘m enjoying all of your covers until then 🫶🏻

Ver.y nice! Have been a Beatlemaniac since ‘64 but really didn’t think much as to how they made that wonderful electronic noise. Thanks for all your videos!
