It's pretty cool that they kept it authentic with the vocal harmonies. John - lower lead vocals, Paul - higher background and George- middle background actually :)
organboi The scene in the movie implies that they are singing the song while he is grieving after the sudden death of his Mother, she was involved in a hit and run accident and killed instantly, The clips of him dancing are memories of happy time with his Mother.
It wasn't a tear jerker for me per se, but it holds great meaning to me. It's putting everything that's going wrong in their lives behind them to do something that they didn't understand was incredibly historic. It was the monumental scene for me.
Madshepherd They recorded on the 12th of July. Julia was in the accident on the 15th. It bothered me how they messed up events in this movie. Also, George should be present for the recording, but was not in the movie. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie I enjoyed, but some of the history is off/bothersome. John was really mad about how the drums sounded on That'll be the day.
Everyone always had trouble getting George right. In yellow Submarine they said it themselves that they couldn't find a voice that suited George properly
I really was crying in this scene, the pain of lost a mother must be the most terrible thing, poor John and Paul, one more reason why their friendship went far away until now, The Beatles for ever!!
Cynthia should've been in this film, she played a big part in John's life during this time in his life. She was there for him when his mum died, she comforted him and really cushioned his blows. I hate that she's forgotten in the history of John Lennon. "We used to take the mickey out of her, but John always said he fancied her. He called her Miss Prim. He was certainly always attracted to her from the first time he saw her in the canteen."- Thelma pickles "I hate the word, but posh best describes John's first impressions of Cynthia. He was clearly attracted to her but hid that behind a regular barrage of bad jokes about her. She was the most important person to him for a long time but John did not want to look weak to his peers, to be soppy over a girl." -Pauline Sutcliffe "One day, not long after we had first met Cyn, I was at Mendips with John and he told me that Cyn was coming from town on the bus. I was twelve then and I was looking forward to seeing her again, wondering what arty, studenty clothes she would be wearing. Mendips is right on the main road, which meant that you could see the bus stop if you looked through the upstairs windows, which is why John ran up and down the stairs to his bedroom whenever he thought he heard a bus engine. You could hear whether or not the bus stopped to let passengers on or off. When the bus did indeed deposit Cynthia on the pavement, John shouted ‘Yes!’ and then flung himself downstairs to watch for her coming through the gate. Then he sauntered through the kitchen, as if he didn’t even know she was coming and he was bumping into her in his own garden by sheer good luck! I couldn’t believe his cool. I loved it! Cynthia was dressed in black from head to toe, just like John. A couple of art students, in love and looking like art students…in love. It was tangible." -Julia Baird (John's sister)
Loved your take on Cynthia. For a time, she was a stabilizing force in John's life. The thing about John Lennon is that, after a childhood of pain where his father abandoned him and his mother was more a fun, "free-spirit" than mother; it left him harboring a deep insecurity. And from that childhood of insecurity he began to act "The Tough". E.g., "No one can touch me - No one can hurt me." It was all an act - and an exhausting one at that. I believe he really did love Cynthia, but she couldn't fill the void in his shadow self left by his dysfunctional mother and father, and so, he "acted out". Fortuitously - and tragically - music/show-biz is perfect for people who live to "act out" and for years he stepped fully into his Role as Beatle John. Decades later it looked as if he'd finally figured-it-out, but at that moment, he was taken. RIP John Lennon.
I think your comment is off the charts great! Thank you for sharing that. Your interest in the subject and insight blew me away. I have been a Beatles SUPERFAN since 1995 and have read everything I could on them and seen everything I could. I say “could” because that “ability” caveat limited the overall amount, but not much. Anyway, it NEVER occurred to me that Cynthia was not included here. That is a staggering omission, on the part of the Producers/Director(s). etc. Once again, thank you for including those quotes, to illustrate your point and also add context to your sentiments. I would love to know sources for those and ANY other comments/interviews by people associated with the Beatles from that time period, including the ones cited in your comment. Peace
What I find odd is that they gave him a small love interest in this movie who I don't think even actually existed. If they wanted to give John a love interest to any degree why not add Cynthia?
0:07 kinda funny how the old man had absolutely NO IDEA who he just let into his studio. Imagine being the guy who let the future Beatles record their very first single.
Well the bastard cop that killed johns mom knew whose mom he killed and when he got a job delivering letter , Paul’s old house was on his route Dude can’t catch a break But he deserved it
well half of them anyhow. know ringo wasn`t there dont think george was either. not that that really matters. waited i think it was ten years to hear this song, from when i heard it even existed till it came out on the first anthology album .
He sold them one copy of the disc then taped over the original tape recording! How much would that tape be worth today? david altman - George co-wrote it, played guitar and did the backing vocals on it
One of the greatest emotions and happiest moments of my life was listening to Paul singing it and tons of people and I singing along to him this song at his concert last year.
I haven't seen this movie, but I have to say this is some very good work by the actors. It's quite a moving scene for me; I lost my mother, who I loved dearly, around the same age as they did. She had great taste in music and loved The Beatles above all. It was The Beatles who, in the wake of my mother's loss, inspired me to take up guitar and bass. I was completely shattered, but as the sounds coming out of that first rinky-dink practice amp began to sound like music, I gradually started coming back to life. So I can relate a bit to John and Paul in that regard, and will always be grateful to them for their awesome music, which helped light the way out of the darkest place I've been.
Hell of a movie, amazing performances, Mr. Johnson was spectacular portraying the young troubled and confused John Lennon. I enjoyed this movie immensely. This kid can act!!!!
Dude you know all these years i'm a potterhead and only recently i was somehow stuck with The Beatles so i just found this movie, and now i know where they get all the James Potter pics to make aesthetics in us potter fandom. sigh.
This has been in my recommendations for a long time by now so I decided to check it out. Btw I have watched this movies and it’s one of my favorites...
OK, this sounds great, great version, granted, but there are SEVERAL chronological inaccuracies: 1) Julia Lennon died AFTER the recording of the 1958 demo disc that included this song, not BEFORE. 2) The backing "aaaaaaa"s where not sung by George, but clearly by Paul. George sang the low harmonies 99,9% of the time. 3) That Guitar wasn't in John's Hands until 1960. TWO YEARS after this recording session. 4) John Lennon didn't look nearly as good as that kid nor did he have so many sexy moves...
Also, the song was written by Paul and George helped with the guitar parts, but John liked to be the center of attention so he forced them to let him sing lead.
No the ahhs are clearly George, you can hear his voice come through really strong there, the mistake is that Paul clearly sings the middle eight ("I looove you" etc), not John
Just a note. If all the dates are right, it says that they recorded this song THREE DAYS BEFORE Julia Lennon was struck by a car and killed. In the video I thought John was looking up to the heavens for that reason. Recording date: July 12, 1958; Julia Lennon killed July 15, 1958.
@faythfill It did release in Independant Cinema's throughout the UK and was critically acclaimed upon that release. However, the production/distribution company for this film was British (partners of Filmfour I believe) and therefore did not have the funding, or audience it could be argued, to have a global cinema/hollywood-style advertising campaign and release.
Pobre John Lennon, perdió a su madre y aún así tuvo el valor para triunfar en la música, y vaya qe triunfo. Quedó en la mejor de la historia the Beatles 😢😢😢😢😢
Quarrymen created this on 1958 with only 3 simple chords E A B7 and 4 years later in 1962 Love Me Do came up with 2 main chords C and G....but those two were legends....
The seed was just planted here as a very young group of kids called The Quarrymen record one of their first songs co-written by Paul/George - soon to become the best and most well-known band in history……The Beatles.
I never understood why this song was never included on one of the early albums perhaps Please Please Me or With the Beatles. Someone at EMI dropped the ball on this one. What a shame actually !
These guys went from that 1958 rockabilly to 1966 to compose the experimental "Tomorrow never nows". The greatest evolution in the history of art.
“Knows”.
If you think about it tomorrow is never now, until tomorrow.
❤❤❤
It’s crazy how people nowadays still know and listen to the Beatles and enjoy them like I’m only 12 and I know almost all of there biggest hits
It's pretty cool that they kept it authentic with the vocal harmonies. John - lower lead vocals, Paul - higher background and George- middle background actually :)
autotuned though
@@andrewtucker94 nah
@@botvertex3830 I'm not saying it necessarily needed autotune, but there's some pitch correction on the vocals in this track.

Aaron and Thomas looks gorgeous here
Did anyone else cry really hard during this scene? Just me? Okay.
No not just you :( love the way "john " plays the guitar in this scene
What? What's there to cry about. Wow.

I love this movie so much, and I'm so glad they chose Aaron and Thomas for playing John and Paul, but that George is absolutely wrong
Everyone always had trouble getting George right. In yellow Submarine they said it themselves that they couldn't find a voice that suited George properly
I always thought they Should of just got George’s son. He is a spitting image of him
Tyler Allen well he’s gotta be good at acting lol
John Pae that is true and a good point lol
I agree I feel like Freddie higmore was too young then but if they make another movie about the Beatles they should cast Freddie higmore as george

This is one of my favourite songs ever!!!! Especially George's part!

aaron johnson... so wonderful...
What a Brilliant song
After watching the movie, and now this scene, it hits different
I remember hearing the original off of Anthology 1. You can hear a foreshadowing of what was to come next. The Foreverly Brothers, lol.
I love this song. I wonder why John sang it though. It was written by Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
Because, John was the lead singer.
A great video - a great song. I can't believe it was not performed more often.
