This is a beautiful arrangement. As a child I was a member of the choir that sang this song on the television show, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and it has been very special to me ever since. I am consistently amazed at the longevity of the song. Thank you for creating this arrangement. I cannot wait to get to the piano.
I was fascinated to hear how you sang in the children's choir on the television show. I guess at the time you thought the song would would have some popularity for a handful of years then fade away. Instead it become a much loved Christmas classic. I wonder, at the time you sang it, did it seem to be a rather unusual Christmas song? We are all very used to it now of course, but it is not the standard kind of Christmas song.
@@rupertaustin It is so interesting you would say that. At the time Vince Guaraldi had collaborated with our church choir to do the first jazz mass at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. A few months later he needed a few kinds to sing a couple of songs for an upcoming TV special. We had no idea what it was and during the first session we waited while the producer finished writing the words to the song. We were pretty well trained by our choir director but were told to sound like kids rather than trained singers. It was a treat to hear yourself on TV the first couple of years but no one had any idea the special or the album would be so popular. Years later, in the late ‘90s, I had a conversation with Charles Schulz (my wife worked for him in his studio and judged ice skating at his rink) and was joking about how the kids were paid a flat fee of $5.00 and some ice cream. His response was “we never really thought that would amount to anything.” Yes, the melody isn’t a typical Christmas song; it is rather melancholy but I think it is consistent with the mood of the show until Charlie finds what Christmas is all about. I was eleven years old and became an instant fan of jazz piano. I am still trying to get the hang of it. I think your arrangements are incredible. Are you a teacher?

No I am not a teacher (except some guidance for my 10 year old son), just a keen music lover and piano music enthusiast - mostly the late classical and romantic repertoire actually. But I love the wonderful songs of the Great American Songbook and get great enjoyment from turning them into satisfying piano solos.

I recently bought your Stella by Starlight score and I read your comments on that video and it seems like you have a particular style/taste in your arrangements. Your style/taste is EXACTLY what I love, and I’m so excited to dive deeper into your catalog. Thank you so much for this work. It’s so profoundly beautiful and moving and I know I will learn it as soon as possible and play it for my mother. Her favorite memories were watching charlie brown with me and my brothers when we were young. I know this will make her tear up.

I think what I loved about this Christmas song from the first time I heard it is it’s childlike simplicity. Now, today, many years later I still feel that it has an innocent child like quality, and I think Mr. Austin has captured that child like simplicity in his wonderful arrangement.

Anywhere from December 1 to December 10, in my opinion, is the perfect time to start listening to Christmas music and decorating your Christmas tree and house.

I’m a piano teacher and have been playing for about 28 years and I must say this is a lot harder to play than it sounds. Making my way through it, but wow…what an arrangement!
