6 locomotives on failed 6MP5 through the Adelaide Hills! 6MP5 rescue mission in South Australia

- In the early hours of January 6th 2024 NR38 failed on 6MP5. The train stalled at Monarto. First we chase D233s from Belair to Monarto with NR8 NR101 and NR117. We then see D233s couple to 6MP5 at Monarto. Then we chase 6MP5 from Callington to Belair with NR117 NR101 NR8 NR38 NR21 and NR95. NR95 was idle on the way back to Adelaide leaving the front 3 locomotives and NR21 to power the train to Adelaide. At Yataringa 6MP5 was stopped on the mainline because 7AM9 had to cross 6MP9, 7MP7 and 2182s at this location. Enjoy watching!

Thanks! Believe it or not it was 35 degrees and heavily raining on this day so I didn’t know if I should wear a jacket or not. This caused panic and rushing around 30 seconds before the train came
As a interested observer from WA was NR38 the only dead loco with NR 95 on idle. The locations mentioned are they in the Adelaide Hills which require helpers.
NR38 was dead and NR95 was idle. I don’t know why NR95 was idle. This was the Adelaide hills but for this train it had no bankers

Typical Adelaide Hills weather. Sunny one minute, raining the next. I lived in Balhannah my whole life (I moved to NSW in December 2021 ), so i know all about it. Great video! Interesting why they sent 3 locos instead of 2. Must have had some big issue with the original 3. Bet this delayed 7MP7 & 6MP9 for a while. Do you know if PM4 got caught up in this drama too?
It’s not just Adelaide Hills weather it’s state wide weather. 7MP7, 6MP9 and 2182s got caught in this. 4PM4 goes through on a Sunday morning so it wasn’t affected as this was Saturday morning. I also believe 4PM6 got past the train

Interesting, thanks. What's the general principle for deriving the train labels?
The first number is the day of the week it left so 6 is Friday. The MP means it’s a Melbourne to Perth train. The last digit is a reserve spot or priority or something idk.
@@SouthTrainsAndPlanesThanks. I think that's similar to the US system. I must find out what the South African system is. I think our trains get a number, which, I presume, means something!

Hi I really like your videos of freight trains. I’ve been wondering a lot recently is there a way to track freight trains like an app or website. I’ve been trying to find one I just can’t.
Sadly everyone gives the same answer of there is nothing public. If you know someone who works for either ARTC, Pacific National, or Aurizon your best bet would be to ask them of they could give you a login. In South Australia we have two main methods of tracking trains. Gheringhap loop VIC which is a website that informs us about every train that goes through Gheringhap. With this we can predict when it’ll be in Adelaide. We also have Train Tracker South Australia which is a Facebook page where lots of people post about what’s moving around. On this day I saw the lights head up the hill and assumed one broke down near Callington so I chased to up the hill and eventually found it at Monarto.

If you Google ARTC and look at their menu you can see the timetable.
Not much running to the timetable atm from what I'm experiencing but it gives you a pretty good idea.
None of the Grain Trains are on the timetable but they generally run them in the gaps, except one crossed the bridge yesterday when the IP was due

Yes bit it’s not Verdun it’s Yataringa. If you search Yataringa on Google maps you’ll basically see exactly where I was
I travel that road every other day that’s how I recognised it. So Yataringa is the old station name?

I think these antiquated old locos are past their used by date. Time to switch to ET’s.
They should be out by 2030 as the company has 50 newer and cleaner locos on order
