- A playthrough of NEC's 1991 horror-themed action-adventure game for the TurboGrafx-16, Night Creatures.
Night Creatures was developed for NEC by Manley and Associates, and it was the sole TurboGrafx-16 game to be created by the people that brought us such SNES hits as The Wizard of Oz, Pink Goes to Hollywood, and King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. They had a of a couple hits for PC (Wolf and Lion), but for the most part their work tended to fly under the radar.
And if Night Creatures flew under your radar, you can count yourself very lucky.
It's a platforming adventure game starring an assortment of Halloween-style monsters, lifting many of its ideas straight out of games like Simon's Quest. You play as some guy who gets cursed by Hecate one night as he takes a nighttime stroll, and if you don't find a way to cure yourself before sunrise, you'll be transformed into a "night creature."
To save yourself, you have to search for weapons and destroy all of the boss monsters before time runs out. (If you want to see what happens if you take too long, I included it at the very end of the video) Night Creatures feels like it's trying for an "open world" like in Castlevania II, but there aren't very many areas at all to work through, nor is there any real thought required to navigate them.
Chances are, though, that you won't want to. While the graphics are music are nicely done, the game is an utterly wretched waste of time and money. The potentially cool animal transformations are made useless outside of very specific couple of moments thanks to the drain they impose on your life gauge, the controls are sloppier than a drunk at last call in a hotel bar, the collision detection is some of the worst I've ever experienced in a game, and the knockback after taking a hit coupled with the lack of a reasonable window of invincibility allows enemies to easily pinball you back-and-forth until your dead. It all feels so unfair and cheap. And broken.
If you enjoyed X-men on NES, you might find something here to like, too. I guess.
Besides those issues, the game also feels thoroughly incomplete. It seems like there were some good ideas here, but the useless items, the lack of use for the bear transformation, and the boss rush at the end all seem to imply that Night Creatures was intended to be far more than it turned out to be.
It might've all nicely served as a bit of mindless entertainment if it hadn't been released in such a dire state, but Night Creatures' quality delivers on horror far better than its content, and as you might imagine, that's far from ideal.
With US exclusives like this, it's no wonder that the TurboGrafx-16 sank so quickly.
If you want something for the Turbo with a similar theme but that's actually fun to play, grab Splatterhouse or The Addams Family instead.

If it's horror you want, Night Creatures delivers it in spades. The gameplay will give you nightmares.
Yup, nightmare fuel
Lmao
*_"Night Creatures"_* on PC Engine. I never heard of this game before, and looking at it, it's not hard to see why it is forgotten.
I always thought that we were really boned with decent PC Engine games. It always seemed to me that the Japanese had games like *_"Aoi Blink"_* , that weird *_"Batman"_* overhead game developed by *_Sunsoft_* , or even *_Detana!! Twinbee_* that were ranging from ([Shrugs] 😑 *_"Okay... This isn't at all bad, but still..."_* ) to (😁 *_"This is terribly underrated!"_* ) no matter the gameplay genre. Americans got the worst shaft, ever.
We got *_some_* good PC Engine games, yes. But I find more bad games in the states than good games here compared to the Japanese exclusives.
Now, the CD add-on... Similar story, but I think we got better games and therefore weren't _completely_ boned... Still, I find so many decent Japanese exclusives ( *_"Moonlight Lady"_* , *_"Sailor Moon"_* [ 😠 Not to be confused with *_"Sailor Moon Collection"_* , thank god!] , *_"Private Eyedol"_* , *_"Tekipaki Working Love"_* , *_"Ys: Book I & II"_* , *_"Popful Mail"_* and *SO MUCH MORE!!* ).
This game would be a case of the US getting bad PC Engine games. Why? Well plenty...
POSITIVES
• *Decent Graphics & Sound* (The sound isn't the best, but gets the job done. The graphics, though repetitive at times, look okay.)
• *_"Sweet! Another Bad Game That's Incredibly Short!"_* ( Gotta love bad games that are over before you know them. It's always nice.)
NEGATIVES
• *Camera Panning* (Comparable to some SNES side scrollers, the screen constantly shifts to the direction that you are facing. It's pretty annoying, frustrating, and evens leads you to get attacked again & again.)
• *Subpar Combat & Enemies* (It's *_EXTREMELY_* simple, folks. And, yes. It is as boring as you think it is.)
• *Stiff Animation* (It's not abysmal, but It's definitely not anything amazing, too.)
• *_"What. The A#%. Is this Control?"_* (It honestly feels like the devs let the drunk guy poorly program the controls just for kicks. It's really delayed and unresponsive. Talk about a real nightmare.)
• *Bad Sound Effects*
Final Rating: 3.4/10
Looking for another sh** game to add to the pile? This game's for you!
Play *_"Splatterhouse"_* over this shallow game.
@@Dorian_Scott Good news alot of Pc Engine games are available on the Japanese PS3 Store. I think its 45 games and there's games like The Bonk games, Tengai Makyou 1 and 2, Ys 1 to 4, Adventure Island, Gate of thunder, Splatter house, Neutopia 1 and 2, Detana Twinbee and more. Best of all if you connect a PSP to the PS3 you can download them from youre PS3 and play them portably.
Who needed all those amazing PC Engine games that were left in Japan when you had...NIGHT CREATURES!!
I've been searching forever for this gameplay i love all the unique monsters thanks for sharing:)
Fun fact. This is actually the first game in the Nightmare Creatures franchise.
Ok, not really, but you thought so for a moment, didn't you.
Well, you got *_me_* for a second with that statement.
This game is what happens when you blend poor controls, a bad camera, boring enemies and combat, and stiff character animations all into one ugly experience. And being that the guys behind Wizard of Oz on the SNES did this, it's no wonder this game sucks.
*TAKE MY GOODS, FOUL CREATURE OF THE NIGHT*
Night Creatures walked so Vampyr could run
Sounds like something the Angry Video Game Nerd should review.
Oh yeah, there's plenty of material that could easily be associated with defecating animals in Night Creatures. The script would practically write itself. Of course, a script consisting of nothing but a photo of Mike Matei would be just as effective.
Just in the beginning of the game, you are already friendzoned. Indeed IS a horror game...
Great music. Classic ending like dragon ninja.. let's go get a burger.. finish 😸
I’m jealous if you got to have this system when u were a kid. I knew one guy at my school that had one THE SOUNDS WERE SO COOL TO ME
Out of my group of friends, three others had the Turbo CD systems (Duos, and one had a TGCD). Quite a few had TG16 itself.
I knew of one person with a TG-16 and they got theirs in 1989. Back then I was completely torn about what to do. Did I go for the TG-16 w/Legendary Axe or a Genesis with...an unknown game. We thought Kieth Courage was a pretty neat game... and then fate happened.
One of my closest friends got his Sega Genesis early (before Christmas) with *Altered Beast and Ghouls n' Ghosts. The second I saw those two games running my mind was made up. I got my Genesis that Christmas with *Altered Beast, Space Harrier II, Ghouls n' Ghosts, and the promise of getting Phantasy Star II when my parents could find it. It was truly incredible...
Addendum- I was an only kid at the time, with severe medical problems, and divorced parents.
0:55 - Flintstones, meet the Flintstones! (SiivaGunner, what have you done to me?)
Not Nightmare Creatures then? - now that was a good game.
You ever try monster party on the NES? Great game
Oh no not the same developers of that God awful Wizard of Oz SNES monstrousity! This is indeed a truely horrifying experience.
As bad as both games are, I do think the graphics and sound are tolerable... It's just the gameplay being a total disaster.
@@Dorian_Scott Perhaps. It's just after the Nerd played it I'll never look after it the same.
This has really cool music 🎃
Very good from Brazil
night creatures, the true castlevania killer !!!!!!
Were there any western-made games for the system? Other than this thing?
Yeah, there was Addams Family, Sherlock Holmes, the TV Sports games, Beyond Shadowgate, Champions Forever, Order of the Griffin, It Came From the Desert, Darkwing Duck and Talespin... there were more, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Some were great, some sucked.
@@NintendoComplete
Mostly licensed games and PC ports, then.
@@austinreed7343 Mostly yeah, but they're were some cool system exclusive original games too.
@@austinreed7343 I think the US got the shaft with PC Engine games. I constantly find good Japanese exclusives for both the cartridges and CD games that are better than others released in the US.
Also, I gotta say, I *_hate_* the *_"Turbografx-16"_* name. It always sounded so boring and lame to me.
It doesn’t look as good as Splatterhouse on the same console, but it’s still OK.
Same for the music.
It looks okay, but the gameplay is terrible. Splatterhouse is soooooooo much better.
@@NintendoComplete yeah i read you description. It’s a shame. It ruins the fun.
They really botched the scrolling here...CALL THE NERD!!
Nice atmosphere and music, but yeah, this is an example of how the controls can ruin an otherwise intriguing game. Better luck next time, TG-16.
It also doesn't help that the devs behind the SNES *_"Wizard of Oz"_* made this. All the more reason to stay away from this game.
A game worthy of the group that made The Wizard of Oz for the Snes...yuck. Where is AVGN when you need him? He would know what to do with this abomination. Now to find some holy water to douse my mobile device as this is just too much evil. Seriously, where was the quality control NEC/Hudson/TTi? Think about it...they charges 50 bucks for this "game." Sega let go a few rotten apples but this is worse than Dark Castle or Sword of Sodan.
Addendum- At least tell me Rick comes in with his 2x4 and shotgun to kill all the evil.
Oof, not really a great game.
Still, GGWP!
They could have made James Bond 007 or Aliens 3 game instead of this crap. Just a waste of talent programming this game to the TurboGrafx16.
The worst TG-16 game EVER!!!!! (and a good friend of mine WORKED ON IT!!) hahahahahahah!!!! He still hasn't heard the end of it.
@DrH3EK8: Just wondering what did your friend say about the game. Did he say there was better games they could be working on.
@@orlandoturbo6431 It was an extremely small development house in Issaquah, WA. I think this may have been their only game, or they possibly did some porting work, or licensed games. I can't remember off the top of my head. Manley and Associates or something like that. So probably nothing better to work on. One thing he did say, is that they got so used to playing it, that they just kept making it harder in articial ways until it was getting close to unplayable. :D They figured if they could do it, anyone else could. I'm guessing they didn't stop to think whether it would be worth it for anyone to try at that point though. :) He later went onto SquareSoft Redmon, Gas Powered Games, and some other local game comanies. Worked on Total Annihilation, Dungeon Siege, Secret of Evermore, and others.
@@DrJ3RK8 I heard it was Hudson Soft of Japan that told no to all the good games that TTI wanted to port to the United States. When the Turbo Duo came out you would think they have all the AAA titles to sale the system. Bad move on their part.
@@orlandoturbo6431 Yes, that was a horrible move. If had heard/read that it was NEC that said no, but I could be wrong. I would have thought Hudson would have been ok with it. They always seemed to be a very cool, (and friendly) company compared to an electronics giant like NEC who was probably bent out of shape that they botched US operations. :D
