  • Hi everyone,
    This week we had more snow and my laptop broke, so I've been working on odd jobs around the house.
    And one of them was to seal our front door which has never been done. I was unsure how to do it, so thanks to everyone who shared their tips and advice on my Instagram & Facebook.
    I also had to fix a white piece of trim above it to tidy it up.
    If you'd do anything differently, then feel free to comment below!
    Oh and note that I do NOT work for B&Q, nor am I associated with them - I just found a pair of their work trousers for 10p at a jumble sale a couple of years back, and thought it they'd be funny to buy.
    Anyway, here's what I used:

    Colour is personal preference really. When I’m fitting white windows or doors I use a white sealant.
    Always use low modulus silicone as it’s easier to work than mastic, and is flexible so doesn’t crack over time.
    Then cut the nozzle off as big as you can and smoothly go down the edges.
    Spray with a mix of fairy liquid and water from an atomiser and then wet a smooth piece of timber with a rounded edge with the liquid too.
    Then finish by smoothing down with the stick barely using any pressure. Jobs a gooden.

    Top Tip! Bin that caulking gun right away and go and buy the slightly more expensive version. If there is someone in your area you dont like go and give the old frame to them :}
    The gun frame and handles on the new gun are thicker and well rounded and the trigger return spring is much stronger. Your hands will feel so much better and the caulk will be applied so much smoother. You will be amazed by how much difference it makes.

    Nice job......not sure about masking tape though. Top of door ......use a wider trim with a piece of wood/plastic as a make up , to soffit board face. Then stick slightly wider trim over wood spacer......then you don’t have unsightly pocket above door.

    You could improve the on=brick masking tape placement (and finished silliconing result) by when you tape up the actual brick work you press the tape down each brick and then finger it into the recessed mortar between bricks then continue doing that all the way down.

    2 things Wong 1st when fitting windows or door frames were you bolt through the frame you should pack gap were bolts are so frames don’t move Especially door frames then gaps formed with Expanding form make that 3 also mastic should go over frame by 2-3 mm you look about over peoples windows and you will see gaps after a couple of years as up upvc expands 2-3 mm per mitre in the hot

    Just make sure whatever you use is construction grade, certified for outside use, moisture, acid, and biofilm resistant, and has a life span of at least 20 years. you dont use a finishing tool on tile or brick because it will drag when you hit the render / grout. you also need to use the correct tape so in this case green high tack frog tape on the plastic and silver gaffa tape on the brick work. soapy water for a smooth finish.

      The best colour to use especially when the mortar is a beige colour, is buff. It costs a little more but it gives a real professional finish. I would advise to always use expanding foam first as it acts as both an insulator of sound and heat & helps to make the jambs of the frame a more solid, substantial & secure installation.

      Usually brown sealant is used externally around PVC door and window frames, for the reasons that've already been mentioned in the comments; the edge that runs on the frame is very neat as the frame is masked. The edge running on the brick is less neat whether masked or not, and so a brown sealant is more forgiving on the brick. Also outside a white silicon will discolour quickly and look a mess.

  • @BossmanEight
    @BossmanEight 6 лет назад +4

    Brown . . . . . interesting.
    Nope! Never would've gone with brown but it looks decent at this point.
    Nice taping job. Frequently people forget to press the tape - if they use it at all - firmly to seat the edges. Then they get upset when the caulk bleeds all over the place and they get raggity edges.

      Yes, I definitely agree! Or I'll get it from Toolstation if it's cheap enough to warrant the longer drive there. Funnily enough, the applicator is from Screwfix and wanted to buy the finishing tool from there too, but the cheapest one they had was a fiver :( So I opted for B&Q instead, which isn't that frequent for me.

    Save yourself some money and use white spirit to clean your door. It costs £1 from the pound shop.

    White would have looked an awful lot better than the brown.

      It may have done initially, but what happens when it gets filthy? It's not that easy to clean to new again.

    Probably said 'brown' to throw you off; as you are a woman doing DIY work. I wouldn't say brown either for a white pvc door. Unless you have a BROWN pvc door that is! But well done for NOT using 'BROWN' silicone.

      langy30 if you are inexperienced using silicone then masking it off yields the best results, I have 15yrs as an applicator, white would look better but it doesn’t age well, it discolours.
      She did a fine job, it was 1 door, were there 50 doors to do then yes, get someone in to do it.

      Wait, so home owners doing all the work on their own home is keeping tradesmen in work? I'd say it's quite the opposite. Do try and think before you speak.

    What a totally wrong way to go around something. That’s not the way to do it. White silicone and use some washing up liquid and a silicone tool to remove excess. It’s a two minute job.
