- Hi everyone,
Today I'm sharing with you how I made my DIY raised patio step from slabs and rendered breeze blocks.
This only cost me £62 in materials compared to a quote I got of £350 and took a day to do.
And to celebrate reaching 10k subscribers this month, FFX have kindly teamed up with me to offer a giveaway prize of £60 worth of tools to all my UK viewers!
FFX: www.ffx.co.uk/
(This is NOT a sponsored video - I was originally offered the same through my blog for an honest review, so I asked if they would offer you something too!)

Brillient videos you should have a T.V. Program
My husband said thanks now he has sorted out our step cheers
This is such a handy video. I will be doing exactly this during half term. We’re building slab patio ourselves 1st, then I’ll be making the step
A young lady after my own heart. So glad I saw your video. I’m hoping to do exactly what you have done. Never done b4. But I love all this type of thing So x fingers.
To be honest I've seen couple of the videos made by this lovely lady, I am very impressed and eager to see more. What I love about this lady is if she's not sure she'll ask her father or ask the viewers for there feedback or improvements. We all have to start somewhere and you are doing a cracking job 😉
I just saw your video for the first time. I look forward to viewing the others.
As the father of 3 strong willed talented and handy daughters - I mean it in the best way - You Go Girl!!!
Thanks ☺️
Take a soft 4 inch paintbrush, you can dip it in water and go over the render with it, smooths it out and makes a nice finish, also helps to stop it cracking if it's hot, you should do this when it's reasonably firm, you can do this on interior plaster too, sometimes helps get a nice smooth corner.
Great video. One of my favorite channels is by Mike Hadduck. He’s a mason and does lots of similar jobs. He’ll often say, “there’s no right way or wrong way. Just what works for you”.
Thank you and completely agree with that saying!
Thanks for your time. Great job.
From U.S.A.
Nice job , we call the big hammer a lump hammer and bolster chisel , when I was an apprentice ( many years ago ) we made our own floats out of floorboarding , round the edges slightly so as not to dig in and screw a wooden handle to it , make one big one small , we put screws in the outer edges to give a scratch finish to the scratch coat ( first or base coat ) , then back off the screws to do the float finish , you can buy 2 sizes in the plastic floats to . you can use a damp sponge to give a slightly textured even finish , makes rounded corners easy to -)
Thanks :) I'd love to start making things like that!
I have much respect for you. I'm doing stairs now and it's hard work.
Shut your door when cutting slabs 😀
Good to give the DPC a mention too - I've seen videos where they've put the steps way above it.
Power woman! Nice brick work, straight and level.
Thanks 😀
The Carpenter's Daughter Look at my sandpit at www.mzamomhle.org. Not bad for an amateur.
Just brilliant. Again :o)
Sincerely. This is another job *very* nicely done.
Another name for the chisel is "bolster". And when you take a very well-earned breather from all this heavy construction work out in the cold and wet you can show us how to make a whole set of custom roughing floats in the tool shed out of nicely sanded scrap timber. That way you'll have floats of varying widths and lengths for most of the jobs you take on, ideally suited to your own hands.
Not to mention making your own custom sized wooden plasterers hawk... :o)
Thank you 😀
I'm looking forward to making a few things like that 😊
Can't argue with results. Looks great.
What I never got to mention as wasn't allowed was the boot mark I mention in the render was from a BBC camera man 😂 It was a great day and one of my most useful projects 🤗
🤣 that made me chuckle
Nice to see your tenon saw is still in use... Nice job.
Hello, just saw you on tv bbc show right on the money, here in Belgium. I hear you when you say you get a kick out of doing stuff on your own. Had to change the tap of the bath. Did some research and saved myself a lot of money. I was so proud of myself. I am proud of you😊🌸
Fabulous video I’ve decided that needs to be a step at my ex wife’s house we’re having a 21st in a couple of weeks I want it all nice and steady so I’m gonna send this video we’re gonna buy the slabs by the other things that you said and give it a go next weekend thanks for the great tips cheers George
Amazing! You've done all the jobs I now need done! Sick of waiting just gonna give it all a go, not as young or strong as you but that's what a wheelbarrow's for! Tks again for the upload :)
Another good build. The wide chisel is a bolster chisel, they come in different widths and are sometimes just known as a bolster. Which I find funny as a bolster is also a kind of pillow/cushion.
Thanks :) I thought it was a bolster or chisel too and after a quick google search, it never came up so stuck with chisel lol. I won't forget it now ;)
What a great video ..I need to build steps out side my conservatory. So informative. Thank you
Really a great video on the “how to” lay patio stones. I enjoy your videos as they are very informal and so easy to understand and follow. Keep up the good work and many blessings to you and your family.
Thanks so much 😀 Hopefully more people will start to give things a go too 😊
Exactly what I've been looking for. Enjoy all your vids, gives me the confidence to have a go.
Great video! You did a good job too. I will need to make a back door step at some point and this method has given me ideas.
I love these videos!
So cool to see such a pretty lady handeling bricks and mortar. Powergirl!
Very nice job ! The only tip I can think of is maybe cut the float to fit, if it wasn't too expensive, other than that, perfect !!
Thanks :) I did wonder that but I thought I'd just take it back for a £5 refund... it might not have been the best idea I suppose but I thought what the hell lol
Hey. 5 bucks is 5 bucks ! Don't blame ya one bit !!
Looks fantastic
Congratulations on reaching 10,000 subscribers! Quite an accomplishment!
Great videos! Please keep the quality content coming!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I'll definitely give it a go 😆😃
20k now ✌
looks good. a simple, yet effective approach to getting it done.
cannot wait for the next project.
Thanks Michael :) Wish I'd done it sooner!!
Congrats on hitting the milestone. I have loved watching you do your projects.... Bringing up my confidence to try and do some of these things
Thanks - that's great news :) And plenty more to come!
Gosh lady, there's no end to your talents!!!
Awww, thanks Mel 😊
Great video, you're so genuine
Love these videos - find them so helpful and I’ve done lots of work on my own house / garden following your tips 👍🏽
Oh wow, so happy to hear it and thanks for the lovely comment 😊
Ha ha, got my step dance i see, great job Vikki...
I'll run out of moves soon lol
Very nice video, I have enjoyed watching all your videos and can not wait for the next ones. Also I think your hard work and the details you give in your videos have aspired me to complete some projects around my own home.
Aww, thanks :D So glad to hear I've inspired! :) I don't want anyone to be as scared as what I've felt before learning something new... causes so much procrastination lol
Great job, once again...
Dont be surprised uv gt so many subscribers as your methods and efforts are extremely encouraging.
Well done and keep posting.
Ur very able and talented is what I see...
Congratulations on the 10K. Another great video! Thanks for sharing your projects.
Cheers :D
Great job that, looks spot on 👌🏻
I think I'm going to have to get you over to my house next time I do a job like that! You did a great job. Looks great and saved loads of money. Win Win! Congratulations on the 10k subs too!
Thanks :D I'd love to learn how to make wooden bowls too ;) ;) nudge nudge lol
The Carpenter's Daughter lol anytime!!
Oh good 😁 I can't wait to start learning more woodwork stuff but keep getting reminded to do other stuff first lol
Just seen this on BBC's 'Right in the Money'. You've done a really good job. Who needs a professional? More satisfaction from doing it yourself. Well done Vicky.
Thanks 😀 And DEFINITELY! DIY is very rewarding and I'd learn nothing hiring people in all the time 😁
You are giving me some great ideas. Brilliant work. Thanks for sharing.
Glad to have helped 😊
Great video Vikkie, lots of good information! Congrats on the 10k :D
Thanks so much Ellen :)
Rendering at ground level will come off with frost, shutter and concrete would have been better because you could use the slabs underneath to keep cost down. Ballast and cement would have only been £20. and lasted a life time.
Thanks for the tip :)
Well done you have inspired me to do mine
Great job Vikkie! Congratulations on 10,000 subs! 👍🙌
Thank you so much Soph! xxx
well done, I needs to do my garden as well
Another great production vikkie thanks for sharing
Thanks Warren 😊 I'm glad you forgave me for going Karcher 😄😉
a sponge in small circular motion or a bunched up piece of newspaper also in a small circular motion.
when i did rendering on site i used a empty blue circle cement bag.
Thanks for the tip! :)
Great video. I found it helpful. I would have kept the door closed when grinding, but that's just me.
great vid, as always, loved the price comparison too, just shows how much the effort is worth it
I completely agree! Hopefully it can change someone's perspective. My parents always say "money's hard earnt', easy spent" and it's definitely stuck with me!
Well done girl,great job.
A good first try; well done. Though maybe mortar could've been a bit damper :-)
With your rendering, you could have used any piece of 'prepared' wooden off-cut and gently rub ove the surface like youwould've done with your float. Soak it in water first, keep the render moist by flicking it with a brush and Hey-Presto! Nice smooth, flat finish :-)
Thank so much for the tips! I don't think this will be my last attempt so will try the off cut idea and thanks so much for the tweet ;)
Well done you make it look easy 👍
Hi Vikkie, I have just bought my first house to flip and EVERYTHING needs done and I have no experience. Your videos are really helping me and giving me inspiration! :)
You are getting quite handy. Great job!
Thanks :) I hope so ;)
Love this! As ever, you did an incredible job.
Thanks so much Sian! So glad I did it... I've been putting this off since 2014 when I'd never mixed mortar in my life. Each job now seems to give me a bit more confidence to try something else :)
Great video, I'd just say it's best to close doors before angle grinding 😉 Nicely done though!
Hi Vicky. Good video again. A couple of tips. Try to lift your level off the slabs when you are tamping them down with a mallet. The shock can damage the bubble. Also it’s easier to wait for the slabs to dry and then sweep in the dry mix. Less mess and much faster 👍🏻
Thank you so much - I didn't know that at all.. I'll go easy with it next time ;)
Congrats on the 10k subs and cheers from Utah!!!
Thank you so much :)
Brilliant result on all fronts. Keep up the good work on the channel. Mark
Thanks Mark :D
A pleasure. Peace!
Nice tidy job.... yet another one of your outstanding jobs ticked off your todo list.... well done :)
Aww, thanks Dave :)
Just seen you on tv your and looking at your work yopu have been doing a great job and saving money aswell just great
Thanks so much! 😁
Congratulations on 10k here's to 10k more. Keep up the good work.
Thanks :) I'll definitely keep on trying :D
Congratulations on the10,000 subscribers, Vikkie. :-)
Awww, thanks Olly :) :)
Spot on, again! For finishing render in a tight space, a wire brush leaves a good texture once the render is half cured. Or cut the float trowel you wanted to use to size. 😀
Thanks for the tip! If only I'd thought of the wire brush!!! lol
The Carpenter's Daughter I once built a single story house out of random stone and wire brushing the pointing at the end of the day was the best finish always. 😀
Now that sounds like such a fun challenge :D
Nice work, looks great.
Thanks :)
yet another great job vikkie and dance lol
the dance is quickly becoming a trademark of hers.
Lol... if only I could dance 😜😆
i could never dance
do you know the donny dance hes got his own facebook page lol
nice work Vikkie👍
Thank you :D :D
Looks great. If frost causes it to crack later, it’s easy to repair.
Thanks - I hope it doesn't!! lol
Gratz vikkie on 10k subs . Another interesting watch
Thanks so much :) Hope you enjoyed it ;)
Het again just a small comment this time but the hammer and chisel you used at the start is a lump hammer and bolster chisel and one more tip is to use a wet sponge when the render was firm and this would give you the same results as the floating trowel but apart from that you did a great job and if there was more people like you around i would be out of a job lol
Congratulations on the 10000 subscribers, step looked really great
Thanks :) I loved it when it started to look like something :D
Hi, I watched you video of you laying your slabs in your back garden. I loved the way you used railway sleeper as the fixed edging, but I noticed in this video they are no longer there. Where did they go and why, they looked so nice. You are an inspiration to get on with it and save some money and also have pride in the finished project, well done....
Thank you :) The sleepers are definitely still there!
Can't wait to see the Carpentry !
Just have a scroll through my videos!
You had about 1k subscribers when I started watching .
Very well done. Congratulations !
Thanks so much 😀 I've found it so encouraging to try and work through my list of jobs 😀
Nice job and congratulations on reaching 10k subs ☺
Thanks Stephen :)
Congrats on hitting 10k Vikkie!
Thanks :D
You’re an inspiration
You did a good job well done
Thank you😀
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done, on the step and the subs. Cheers.
Thanks so much ;)
Lovely job👌
Thanks so much :) I love my new step 😀
Just get yourself a very cheap metal Float and cut it to about 4 inch width with angle grinder,I found that it came in very handy for narrow sections to render like you had.Another one is that when it starts to go off,get a small sponge with the coarse nylon scrubber on one side,it will give you a textured finish on the render when rubbed down,a cheap way to try a couple of new methods for you
Thanks! I'd like to give it a go again 😊 I'll stick with small things for now though 😄
Am doing one 3 times the length but this gives me a idea good vid 👍🏽
Thanks! Hope it goes well 😊😊
If you need a smaller float, you could use a very cheap plastic chopping board and make your own in any shape or size that you need
Thanks for the tip!
Great VIDEO 😀😀
Thanks Renée, hope you're well! :D
Great Video , I'm sure you're aware of Bostiks cementone Acid Brick and Patio cleaner and it's great for cleaning any staining that can occur when doing jobs like this , then obviously seal after .
Keep up the good work .
Thank you! No, I didn't know what kind of acid! That's another thing I planned on looking in to soon as the mortar mess on the conservatory is a right mess haha. Also, what would you seal it with?
The Carpenter's Daughter I've used Thompson wet look patio and block seal sometime ago on my block paved drive but there's many makes of sealer around to do this type of work . It will look brilliant cleaned and sealed .
Great job 👍
Thanks :D
Good job..about to do the same.
Have fun with it :)
Great Job !
Thank you :)
Clever girl.
Nice vid again well done
Love it.
If i was to win the ffx voucher, i would upgrade some of my current hand tools. Great video as usual, noticed that you're also a woodworking uk member. Keep it up!

To finish off the render you can use a damp sponge to give it a nice effect
Thank you! :)
A woman who loves getting her hands dirty and can use a level.
Perfect 💪🏻💪🏻
Haha... I couldn't stand not knowing how to use a spirit level, so been getting stuck in once I got the hang of it 😂
The Carpenter's Daughter fair play admire the hands on attitude. Respect 💪🏻💪🏻
Finally found a video pertaining to what am doing
Very nice !!! you are the princess of do it yourself :-)
haha! Thanks for your kind words :)
I find that using a sponge to finish render always gives a good finish..
Great vid, what should one do if an air vent is in the way e.g. right under the door?
