Also, I later realized that Hauk probably wasn't aware of DICKerson's intentions, but I didn't at the time so you'll hear me refer to "them" as a unit through the end of the video.

This was based on the book by Cronauer but he had a problem with the accuracy.
A friend of mine's Dad was a Sergeant Major in the army. Those guys generally have something like 20 years in. They have seen the worst things imaginable so inside the military their sense of humor is pretty thin.
The man I knew only needed 4 or 5 more medals to have every medal issued by the army. His dress uniform was more impressive than people who were officers.
"We Were Soldiers" is probably the best depiction of the Vietnam War. The movie also hits close to home because my father participated in this battle. My mom said he watched some of it and just started crying.

I was born in Saigon. My family couldn't afford a refrigerator so my Mom went shopping every day. Sometime, she took me with her. I was 7 or 8 at the time. It would be open air markets with haggling for the best price. Sometimes, we would have lunch at open air restaurants. There many different dishes such as stir fried noodles, congee with choice of meats and preserved duck eggs. Since we were Chinese, my family had to escape after the war and eventually came to the uS after months hiding in a refugee camp. Thank you for your reaction as it brings back memories.
I went to middle school with several Vietnamese refugee kids. They were quite literally the friendliest kids in the school. And some of the stories they told about escaping from the communists were terrifying

@@RhetoricalThrill We sponsored by a church in Virginia. They provided us a house to stay in while it was up for sale. The church even provided clothes. We had very few. When our boat grounded off of Malaysia,, I wore a shirt as pants as a man carried me on his shoulder to shore. We slept on the beach until we moved to a temporary with tents to a permanent. It was just some ground large enough for our family of 10 with my pregnant mother. My father and second brother borrowed an ax and was able to chop down tree branches and palm leaves to provide a roof. Our bed was of smaller tree branches with knots on them depending on where you sleep. We had a small campfire for cooking. The Red Cross would rice for the family and milk for my mother. To get wood for the fire, my father and second brother would climb the mountain daily. I was too small. We were there for ten months.
Side note. This movie was said to be based on a true story. The person the movie was based on, Adrian Kronaur (I probably spelled that wrong), did a tour after this movie became famous and said that almost nothing in it actually happened. He was a disc jockey in Vietnam, but the child who was a friend, and basically everything else, was just made up for the movie.
Not surprising, the movies do like to take liberties with true stories. Thanks for watching!
Sergeant Major is an enlisted rank as opposed to an officer's rank, so in the US Army they would be addressed as "Sergeant Major" rather than "Sir" (or "Ma'am"). Of course, the irony here is that Robin Williams is playing a US _Air Force_ serviceman, and in the Air Force you address *anybody* of a higher rank than you as "sir" or "ma'am".
They took a lot of liberties with the military aspects of this film.

I think this is one of the most accurate movies of daily military life, not necessarily warfare. Granted though Cronauer or anyone would've been locked up if he did or said a quarter of the shit in this movie.
Also...even though LT HAWK out ranks sgtmaj dickerson...it would be hawks last mistake if he messed with dickerson...sgmaj's are highly respected people who have yrs of military experience behind him...usually a.colonel or a general is the only rank that can order a Sargent major
And yes.. Bruno Kirby and his "stupid Roy Rogers wagon wheel coffee table" were brilliant in "When Harry Met Sally". He's also opposite Billy Crystal again in "City Slickers". He's also in "The Godfather part II". and even though the film is set in Korea Robert Altman's "M*A*S*H*" (and the following TV series) both were more commenting on the ongoing Vietnam war more often than referring to the War in Korea.
MASH was the GOAT of sarcastic Television comedy...

I never watched MASH but this made me think of what I’d heard about it. And I’m thinking City Slickers is getting bumped up the list now!
The late Kirby also appeared in This is Spinal Tap / Flesh & Blood / Sleepers / Donnie Brasco / Played / voiced Reginald Stout in Stuart Little.
The movie was based on a real Adrian Cronauer (passed in 2018), and yeah... Robin kept going off script so much the crew just basically gave up and let him run.. lol
I feel bad in a way for Bruno Kirby's character in the film. But also how brilliant he was. It takes alot of skill and effort for a very very funny guy come off as someone so "comically impaired".
Oh he was brilliant in this part! The straight man doesn’t get as much credit but he did a great job at it 😂

My favorite Robin Williams movie is one of his lesser known.. the Fischer King. Kind of like this film, it hits extroardinary highs with raucus comedy interspersed with deep, real, emotional subject matter. Also starring Jeff Bridges and Mercedes Ruehl Excellent film. Id also recommend Awakenings. Robin Williams and Robert Deniro in a drama based on a true story.

Thanks for watching movies I haven’t seen in years- I haven’t seen this since I served in Iraq. Different situations, but there’s still some undeniable parallels. Of course being a smart assed airman assigned in an army post really resonates with me. 😂

You are right to feel how you do about Dickerson. From our perspective, of course he is wrong in trying to get Cronauer killed. But what proof would anyone have to that he did it. Even today, PROOF of evil is hard to come by. And evil people have always (and will always) exist.
On a lighter note, this is one of my faves from Robin and I have been sold on your channel. Subscribed.

"Sir" or "ma'am" are addressed to officers, which are your lieutenants, Captain's, majors, Colonels, and general types.
The enlisted personnel are your privates, airmen, and Sergeant ranks and addressed more by their rank.. Same concept in the Navy, but different naming.

The fact is that most Americans didn't understand (and still don't) why we attacked Vietnam - to 'stop communism' - is because Vietnam came to us to help liberate them from French colonial rule and we turned our backs on them (because France is an ally), so they went to China, who did help but with conditions of communism...
All those people died on both sides because America refused to help the oppressed for the sake of politics.

It's a mixture of scripted gags and Robin improvising, certainly there was way more footage recorded than could be used. What is 100% genuine is the reaction of the other actors. The camera used to 'float' on set recording the laughter for real so when you see Whitaker and Wuhl creasing up - the were. Same with the english class, they recorded as per the script but it seemed dry yet when Robin was talking to the extras off camera he had them in hysterics. So Levinson told him to keep doing whatever he was and he would signal to the cameramen when to film their reactions and cut it into the footage Classic example, the softball game. The guy had seen a softball game and knew the fruit was too big to be a ball so he approached Levinson. He explained that Robin was in charge of the equipment so he went to find him. Levinson grabbed the nearest cameraman and told him to start shooting and follow what happened - what you see is Robin's genuine reaction to his concern. Brilliant.
Oh that is great! I know they did something similar in Mrs. Doubtfire - the scripted take and the Robin take 😂

FYI: Walter Brennan played Stumpy in Rio Bravo in 1959. This film is set in 1965.
He was also on a TV show called "The Real McCoys" in the 60's.
JT Walsh(dickerson) is a great character actor. Always plays bad guys well in movies.

Yeah, it seemed like the late 80s and 90s he was doing comedy-dramas like this, then started doing a lot more dramatic and darker stuff. RIP

2. Don't knock Guam. I was there for a total of 7 1/2 years and it was great. I also did 3 1/2 years on Hawaii and to be completely honest it was 3 years 5 months too long. It SUCKED.
3. I got to meet Robin in 1983 in Cannes France. A couple of us were waiting for a ride to our "liberty boat" and on the promenade, The scene where he's talking to the troopies was very reminiscent to how things went down except there were only 2 of us. He wasn't "on". He was just being himself (as far as I could tell).
4. Filmed entirely in Thailand.
5. GOOF: Enlisted men are not called Sir. Garlick keeps calling him sir.

There are 5 Marx brothers, Chico like to played the piano, Harpo is the mute that liked playing the Harp, Zeppo was the one that was mostly a straight man and wasn’t as funny as his brothers. Gummo was the one brother that never made it to the movies.

So a very basic rundown US Army ranks you have two groups, enlisted which are privates, corporals, and specialists which are basically bottom of the totem, the over them but enlisted are the NUMEROUS ranks of Non-commissioned officers aka NCOs aka sergeants. Then in officers which are lieutenant, captain, major, colonel, and general. Officers are to be addressed as "Sir" or you'll get in trouble. Aside from "First Sergeant" and "Sergeant Major" all NCOs are to be referred to as "Sergeant" whether it be a Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, etc. Calling any NCO "sir" will land you in a world of trouble with any of them, not just this guy.

@@RhetoricalThrill I'll add that sergeant majors are the highest ranking non commissioned officers in the army as well as being the most experienced, respected and feared not only to ranks below them but also to junior and middle ranking officers as well. Junior officers with only a few years military experience and zero combat experience would rely heavily on the advice and recommendations of their sergeant majors when making combat decisions that could result in multiple combat deaths and for which they, the officers would be accountable for.
@@RhetoricalThrillhe left a group out. Between Enlisted and Officers are Warrant Officers. Not a commissioned officer but not an Enlisted level in terms of rank. The lowest level of Warrant Officer(WO1)is referred to as Mister (Mister Roberts for example) while the higher WOs are referred to as Chief(Chief Roberts).
As far as Armed Forces Radio/TV(AFRTS) on air personnel, some of them are STILL drier than stale toast. However, any restrictions on music programming for the radio side would be due to any kind of Status of Forces agreement with the government of the country they are based in. The TV side operates like your normal local station.
The us invasion of VIetnam killed about 2 million civilians, out of a a total of more than 10 million avoidable civilian deaths between the french occupation, the south Vietnam puppet government of Dien, and the post war sanctions. That doesn't include the fact that most NVA and Vietcong were basically 3rd world peasant farmers without a real military. And of course many americans died too. Most Americans generally still believe myths about the invasion like that the US clumsily tried to help a country defend against another country, in a hopeless mission. In fact it was part of a larger attack on indonesia, cambodia, laos, etc and an attempt to step in for failed french imperialism. There still is no American vietnam movie that tells the basic story, and we shouldn't expect there to be.
I’d say you’re right on that. I think all war is tragic even when it’s basically unavoidable, but this one especially so.
I love this movie. It is based on a real veteran DJ that went to Vietnam. However not everything in the movie is true.

3 thumbs up! What we fail to give credit to in this movie is the performance of J.T. Walsh. It takes a lot of talent to portray a character that is so terrible. To make everyone HATE you! And how about Bruno Kirby's performance as a terribly unfunny comedian. It absolutely takes a lot of talent to be that unfunny.

Robin ad libbed the radio segments it was said....the other stuff was mostly script. Yes, "what we were told and what was really going on" is exactly right. Fast forward to 2003, invading Iraq because of Weapons of Mass destruction that were never found. History repeating itself. the difference was in Vietnam there was a draft system, your number comes up and you have to go...especially if you were poor, couldn't afford college, which would give you a 4 year college deferment from serving. If you were rich, you could buy yourself out of it and claim on your physical said you have bone spurs in your feet....and then become commander in chief...Watch I Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die Rag by Country Joe McDonald as performed at Woodstock Music Festival 1969, that's it in a nutshell. My friend and I were 11 year old kids, his older came back in a pine box ...for nothing...it was never a declared war, it was a "police action." We make heroes out of killers to cover up our guilt of civilian casualties. Now we cannot even keep these killers off of the streets and away from elementary schools. Follow the money...

27:47 sadly, the Vietnam war was very screwed up. I know a veteran of that war who says his unit fragged (killed) several 2nd Lts who were going to get the entire platoon killed by following stupid orders from politicians in the service. I don’t know if he was blowing smoke or not, but I know friendly fire incidents were not uncommon during that war. I’m sure sgt dickhead believed he was doing something to further the war effort.
Too much to get into, but with all of the movies made of this time period, they screwed up nature of the war is always overlooked because the movies all seem to have a political bend that overlooks the real problems with Vietnam. One of the biggest is summed up by a story told to me by another friend who served during that time. He was aB-52 crew chief on Guam for 18 months servicing aircraft flying sorties over Vietnam. In order to get combat pay, he had to fly at least 1 combat mission per month. Every mission he flew, they’d get about half way to the target and have to turn around because some politician in Washington decided to disallow the target. Every time they turned around, they had to drop their bombs into the Indian Ocean because it burned too much fuel to carry them back and landing fully loaded would have been dangerous. The politicians never let the soldiers fight the war without ridiculous micromanagement.
That’s something I’m always aware of, everyone has a bias, so I try to suspend reality and just take the story as it’s being told, at least while I’m watching 😊 Thank you for your comments!

1st it wasnt a conspirancy to kill Robin Williams , Lt Hawk (he was a moron who tought he is funny , but he wasnt evil or mean, just not connected to reality) had no idea about the road he will took and the danger in it, and the creepy twins censors this kind of info all the time.
it was a solo act by the sgt , the problem is he didnt do anything illegal , all he did was not pass 1 piece of information

the reason i say he didnt got free is becouse : he was a CAREER solder, being station in a remote $hit hole is kind of career assasination , it eliminate any chance to advance and freeze his career, yup it would been very satisfying to c him go to jail , but he was to smart and know the system way to well to open himself to that.
about the Sir part , i'm wasnt in the US army so it a GUESS on my part , but as i know there ranks paths in it:
Officer: Lt-> captain -> Major....
non officer: corporal -> sgt -> najor sgt....
Sir is usually how u approach the officers
another diffirence : Officer usually come from military school and start as Lt while no officer get promoted from the ranks
That makes sense, thanks for the explanation there! I realized later that Hauk probably had no idea, he was concerned about the interview thing but Dickerson came up with it on his own. I also realized that there was really no way for anyone to know what Dickerson did either. Taylor killing his career was about as good as we could hope for.

What I mean is for a movie, it just seems hard to strike the right tone to be funny but not make light of what everyone is going through. I’m guessing humor is how a lot of people got through it, just like they show here. Take care 💜
