Another GREAT film from that era was the Goodbye Girl with Richard Dreyfuss. It is light hearted and he won the Ac. Award for Best Actor that year. I know you will like it as your response to this one was a lot of fun
I recently watched The Goodbye Girl again, and that movie holds up so well. The only things dated about it are the clothes and the cars. Everything else could happen right now, today.

The character of Michael could not get work as a male actor, but his delve into the Dorothy one got him noticed. It was a BRILLIANT film and when it came out no one had any qualms about it. Talk about the tribulations of casting... Dreyfuss was the exact opposite of what they were looking for, but something happened when they watched his audition through the lens, chemistry. Awards galore, and like Tootsie, the main song was a massive hit and on constant play on the radio. - Instantly subscribes!

This movie was made in 1982 I think, and that's when the soap opera "General Hospital" was HUGE on TV -- it was the #1 soap on TV and had a huge following, so this "Southwest General" was sort of a take-off on that.

I lived near the Farm they used in the Movie (Hurley, NY). I got to watch them film a couple of scenes. I asked one of the Crew where Dustin Hoffman was and he said he just walked by you and said hello (as Dorothy). I had no idea! The Bar scene where Dustin Hoffman returns the ring to Charles Durning is the Hurley Mountain Inn. I have eaten there many times (great food, service and atmosphere).

There are a bunch of reactions to Mrs. Doubtfire, an inferior movie IMO, but this is only the second I've seen for Tootsie. All credit to Robin Williams, but Dustin Hoffman makes a much better and more believable woman!

This is one of those movies that made me want to move to New York! It seemed like anything and everything could happen here. Great reaction to a classic comedy; I'd forgotten Dabney Coleman was in it. He was so good at this kind of role.

Always love Dabney Coleman, even (maybe especially) when he's a sleaze. RIP For one of his best - Cloak & Dagger, one of the darker 80's kids movies. Dabney plays dual roles and crushes both. Also funny and sleazy in Dragnet, with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd.

George Gaines is so great in this .. He's mostly known for his role in Police Academy.. but him showing up as the washed up soap actor is just gold.. it's hard to steal the movie out from under this stacked cast but he comes damn close. Just his simple delivery at the end, "does Jeff know?" Is hilarious.. him singing outside Michael's apartment. Just so funny.

I also second the recommendation for Ordinary People (1980 Oscars for Best Picture, Director Robert Redford, and Supporting Actor Timothy Hutton, plus an additional nomination for Supporting Actor Judd Hirsch and a major wuzrobbed nom for Best Supporting Actress Mary Tyler Moore. An absolutely outstanding film that deserves far more recognition today than it gets.
He was trying to keep the charade of the character in tack and he didn't know how to trick Sandy without hurting her. That was his mistake, plus he did not want her to know that HE was the one who got the part of Dorothy. I agree it was wrong but I was around when this movie came out and people acted way different back then. Too bad we couldn't take a time capsule back for a week to experience the vast difference between then and now
Bill Murray was just so great in his role. Another great movie from around this time starring him that I don't see reacted to much is Stripes, which also had Harold Ramis and John Candy.

I haven't seen this one in so long. I'm really sorry to hear about the death of Dabney Coleman. I try to arrange a rewatching of some of their best films as a tribute, and this film definitely makes the cut for the one I need to put together for him.
Dustin Hoffman was upset that the makeup department couldn't make him look more conventionally "pretty" and feminine (although I think they did a pretty decent job). He even teared up talking about it in one interview saying that it wasn't so much about learning about being a woman as it was learning what it was like to be someone "people didn't respect but for the wrong reasons" (some fans had shown up on set looking for Jessica Lange and bumped into Dustin in full Dorothy costuming and gave "her" the brushoff).

Not sure why reactors do not in general react to Dustin Hoffman movies but there are so many great ones. And hes isnt my favorite actor. For a completely different role of his watch Marathon Man which also stars Lawrence Olivear. You may never go to a dentist again.

Another really great forgotten 1980s film with her in it is Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" (1985), the director's lone foray into pure comedy. As another poster mentioned, although Dabney Coleman was mainly known for playing comical sleazebags, the one movie where he plays a genuinely likeable character, "Cloak & Dagger" (1984) is a real banger.
