    Fun fact: Kerri Green did not only her own lines, but overdubs for all of the younger daughter's lines, as well.

  • @LogicalNiko

    This movie was really the turning point in John Candy's career. Before this movie he was seen as mainly a sidekick actor, this illustrated that he could carry a starring role.
    The odd dubbing of the youngest child was a rush job. They in fact Kerri Green (the older sister) did all of her lines in post because of the rushed timeline on the film.
    Carl Reiner directed this film and he and John had such a blast working with each other that they really wanted to do a sequel. The idea for the movie came from the writers real life vacation in Southern California and the difficulties of being a larger man on a beach (issued included getting into the wrong house, being on a public beach pathway, spraining a leg in a boat accident, being next to a bunch of lifeguards, sunburn, and Jim Belushi coming over for a visit and throwing a party with random people in the rental).
    The project was heavily restricted on budget and time, so it was shot in about 2 months. Candy only took $800k, which was smaller than many of his previous side roles. The film production started in March and was in theaters the same August (which is very very short). This yielded a bunch of sub-plots that were just poorly put together. In fact there was supposed to be a bigger thing with the neighbor and his husband to add a PG-13 spice to it, the John Larroquette and son role was supposed to be bigger leading to some tensions and resolutions. Basically an almost affair on both sides, the wife thinking Jack was having an affair from all this comical encounters with the neighbor but Jack actually having an 'affair' with a boat and it really about him establishing a core achievement again in his life. In the end the studio decided that the PG-13 could cost them some market share so they dropped all those bits and forced it into a PG and switched the marketing to a family movie.
    Also interesting fact, many of the crew on this film actually were also involved and committed to Back To The Future, which was wrapping filming just after this films shot was done. One of the reasons this got shoehorned into a small gap in the studio's schedule.

      “John Belushi throwing a party with random people in the rental.” How on-brand is that? 😂 But yes, a fun movie that just could have used a little more script work.

    • @LogicalNiko
      @LogicalNiko 2 месяца назад +1

      @@RhetoricalThrill Totally. It was actually Jim (John's younger brother). But yeah all the Belushi's were pretty out there and got away with a lot of things and just semi-imposing on other people (but of course everyone instantly forgave them too).

    😎👍 This film was directed by Carl Reiner (Rob's Dad). While it's cute, I think his best work is the Steve Martin vehicle "All Of Me" which came out a year earlier. 😉

    Can't remember if I've suggested it before, because I might have, but if you want to see some good Rip Torn, a personal favorite of mine is Albert Brooks' "Defending Your Life", with Meryl Streep! Which, when it came out, was advertised as the first true story about what really happens when you die!
