  • Here is one of the most requested videos thus far for my channel. I review this 1994 Suzuki DR250se and compare it to my 1994 Suzuki DR350se. I walk you through all the changes and updates that I have made to the bike since purchasing it along with some helpful hints of ownership. This is a great bike and although down on overall power and torque from the DR350 it is a worthy bike for road and off-road use. Let me know your thoughts and feelings on this tried and true dual sport! Thanks for watching!!

    I had a 94 or 95 DR350 that I had for a while and sold. I missed it and found a 99 model nearby so I bought it. I like the idea of the DR250 for riding trails. Wouldn't mind getting one if I run across within a couple hundred miles. Nice review!

    Good to see one of those again, it's been many years. I had a '91 DR350 that I bought in '95 and rode until '05 with over 20,000 miles on it. I sold it and got a new DR650 that I still have. But man, that old DR350 was a great bike and I rode it all over Colorado, both on the highways and especially on the 4x4 trails, all over the place on nasty, rocky trails and it always did great. The DR350 could easily cruise on the highway with that 6th gear, and it had plenty of power, I never felt like I needed more power on the road. Off road, it could climb anything, I wish they still made it! But you know, the DR650 is a great bike too, and even better on the road, but not quite as good off road, but still does really well on trails.

    • @jimarmbrester1721
      @jimarmbrester1721 4 года назад +2

      Yeah, or the titanium valves need adjusted often, etc. The DR’s, XR’s, and pretty much all of the old school type 4 strokes had exceptional reliability, low maintenance, and great all around powerbands. They weren’t crazy fast, but much better all around machines. I’m in the market for an 250-400 dual sport. It’s between and XR250-400, or a DR250-350. Nineties bikes are where it’s at for me. Do you have a comparison video between the 250 and 350? Thanks

    • @TheGamersRace
      @TheGamersRace 3 года назад

      @@jimarmbrester1721 90s bikes are good and easy to maintain, but so are newer dual sports. Fuel injection is a major upside, liquid cooling is a debatable upgrade. For example the DR250/350 came with the crapshoot BST33 CV Mikuni Carbureter, which even when tuned correctly, is a sloppy pig. Even bad fuel injection is good compared to some decent carburetors. If a wire shorts on bikes like these, fix it. There's like 7 circuits, it's easy. Carburetors always give you trouble, even flat slides.
      Liquid cooling imo isn't really worth much for most people as long as you had a decent oil cooler. You could always add a fan and oil cooler later if you needed one. Radiators need to be protected well in order to not be busted, if theyre not and you go down you could bust a line or a rad. Oil coolers are much safer for offroad, and can even be lighter.
      The problem is you get such good bang for buck with older bikes. They're enough to have fun on and cheap enough that you can afford it and not feel bad about thrashing it. They're easy to do valves and stuff on too. Titanium valves are better but honestly ease of adjustability wins in my book (go tappets!), as long as you stay ontop of maintenance (screw you shim and buckets!)

    I had a '91 Japanese-spec version of this bike. It didn't have an electric starter and was equipped with inverted forks. I found the ergonomics not really to my liking. It had too much of a swayback feel to it. I raised the forks, had the seat cut. I forget by how much and then I put on a McGrath-bend Renthal handlebar. Bingo! It was perfect for me. I used it a little bit off-road and even on a motocross track but it was mostly a commuter/leisure bike. It was a great bike. I loved the motor which was understandable since I came off a Serow 225. When I first got it, I had difficulty starting it. I had to use the compression release a lot but as time went on, I got the hang of it.

    I just bought a 1993 DR250s with electric start. Other than the Clymer manual it’s difficult to find information on them. It was $1100 in good shape and felt great on the test ride. Other than the engine it shares a lot of parts with the DR350. The carb is the same with slightly different jetting. The pumper carb is supposed to be much better but like you said, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I may see if a DR200 tank will fit it for the extra gallon of gas without loosing the 90’s look.

    Good vid! I'm considering purchasing a 1993 DR250SE. Owner's asking $1k, but it's pretty tired, oil in frame system kinda scares me, if the motor grenades good luck clearing out any debris! Is the aftermarket as strong for these? Thx

    • @ws6man96
      @ws6man96  4 года назад

      This motor was made for a good number of years and I even believe many parts from the 350 might work. They also had a dirt version, so parts are readily available. These motors dont really grenade. Even so, there us most likely a screen that would trap debris from reentering the motor.

      The oil in frame is awesome! It keeps the bike cooler, and the engine is forgiving if you overfill the oil by mistake not like almost every other bike. It simply burns off the excess and you're good to go after it stops burning and smoking away, or drain it if you really wanna get dirty lol!

  • @crooney82

    Great review. I have one just like it. I’m 5’9” tall and this bike is slightly to small for me to really feel comfortable standing up on it thru technical off road sections. It’s a fantastic dirt road bomber and city bike but it’s really not set up well to be a dirt bike with a license plate. I love the bike. My 2 cents.

    • @JohnF06
      @JohnF06 Год назад

      Would this fit a 6’2 male

    • @crooney82
      @crooney82 Год назад

      @@JohnF06 it’s a tall motorcycle so if you are riding around town it’s gonna be fine. But if you are looking to ride it off-road I (most of the time) would look for something like a Honda XR650R XR600R XR400R or a DRZ400E (not the S). Also I have a DR-Z 400K and an RM-Z 250 and these bikes are WAY easier to ride off-road. Just depends on what you want out of a dual sport. When I do dual sport riding I usually grab my plated DR-Z 400. My comment about it being slightly small it’s really about the dr250’s geometry. It’s really a bike that’s designed to be sat down on most of the time IMHO. It comes with flat and wide handle bars and It has a wide seat and the pegs are situated for it to be a really comfortable 2 track bike. The bike also has a CV carb which is smooth and awesome on the road but doesn’t have the snap you need for deep sand or dirt. The DR250 and DR350 are awesome bikes. Just take my soap boxing as a data point. I ride in Michigan which is really soft terrain so someone who rides on hard terrain more may have a different experience.

    • @AndyUnknown
      @AndyUnknown Год назад

      @crooney82 the E and S are almost the same. E is slightly more powerful. I had drz400s for a couple of years and now I am looking for the same model. Just curious maybe I missed smth, so why you don't recommend the S-version?

    • @crooney82
      @crooney82 Год назад +1

      @@AndyUnknown so I have the DRZ400K which is the E model without the electric start so it’s the lightest most off road oriented drz 400 and very hard to find. I think the s is an awesome bike and certainly recommend it but my comments are about riding where I ride. It’s sandy 2 track. Single track and dirt roads mixed together. The s weighs more than the e and has a cv carb and a bunch of road stuff you don’t need to be street legal where I ride. The E model comes with plastic gas tank and other more off road orient parts. All these bikes have enough power in my opinion but the power delivery is what Suzuki was doing when they put the cv carb on the S model and then pumper carb on the E. The E is much more responsive off road and the S is much smoother on road. So I guess I’m saying if you are actually doing true dual sport riding the S is probably perfect for you unless your off road riding areas are really technical. And that’s just me saying from personal experience having owed and ridden them and it’s about how easy they are to manage (for me).

      That's interesting. I always knew the DRs to get electric start in 1994. What is "freeway" speed? At 55mph on my stock gearing its roughly only 6.5k. 9k or over seems very high for even 70mph if that's your case.

    • @cornholius
      @cornholius 5 лет назад

      @@ws6man96 For me, a safe freeway speed is unachievable on the 250. I don't really like taking it past 70, and at that speed, the engines already making a lot of noise. Here in california, idiot drivers are more common than smart/patient ones and I like to be in front of them.
      The 650 is a great freeway bike, but not comparable on the trail. Never tried the 350, they're less common. I would like to though, it's probably perfect for all.
