Formula 1 Belgium Spa-Francorchamps: Greenpeace Protest, Not Shown on TV! (25-8-2013)

- This time I have recorded something very unexpected. Greenpeace came and tried to disturb the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix. They wanted to protest against the main sponsor Shell for drilling for oil on the North-Pole. On television it wasn't visible, but in this video you can see what really happened!
First I saw a group of motorized paragliders pass by. Shortly after they where chased by a helicopter. When walking to my tribune I saw a group of people on the tribune itself! After which they came down the other side with a banner. Bernie Ecclestone also had a suggestion how to get rid of these. The race started as if nothing had happened, but after the race some protesters tried to abseil to the podium on which Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton were standing. Only one was able to start abseiling, the other two got caught by the security. During this abseiling and the price ceremony two small protest-banners were automatically raised by remote control. All in all this was a very strange thing to witness! This is my report of what really happened, so now you know too!

These Greenpeace-people got closer to a podium than McLaren...
fuckinkg greenpeace
unannounced Para gliders in airspace with TV helicopter = disaster waiting to happen
Yes, I have. I used to attend eco meetings/lectures but I happen to like motorsport as well as care for the environment. I'm sure not everything you do in life is totally eco-friendly, but I don't come and spoil it or mock you for it. Fair enough if you think it's your mission to reply to every single comment, but what's it to you that I enjoy something that's not great for the planet? I'm just saying I'd be more supportive if they didn't disrupt events to spread their word..
Don't know how anyone, excluding FOM, could be mad at that.. Well fucking played!
shell
Haha I worded that wrong, I meant that even with this much exposure most people still won't care.
made a lil interesting what was a boring podium anyway .
Gotta give you a point there.
OFCOURSE THEY DID..I like formula one but the reason for my discontent about this is that they broke into the place and did it illegaly
In earlier days, i also enjoyed car races and it's still something special ... speed, power, etc.. But why has Shell (and many others too) to destroy the environment for all that, what we know as the basement for all creatures on this planet. If somebody shows that to the people ... is that stupid ? If some boys drive round and round the same round ... is that intelligent ? They did nothing to hinder you whatching the race ! One this day you only receive a little bit more information ... ;-).
you really ain't gotta single clue...do you..
At the time I was confused what the booing when DC came out was all about. Makes sense now lol tbh I think this is a wasted effort by them. Most ppl at a GP are petrolheads, you aint gonna convert them to cycling just cause you hang from a roof and hold up a poster. That was one boring GP though lol Well done to Mercedes today for edging closer to that 2nd place in constructors which a great position to be in if you ignore Red Bull's (Slightly boring) dominance over last few years.
great climate action greenpeace
This comment didn’t age well…
we? Or just you. I'm sure you will one day, when it's too late to act.
sorry, I overreacted, now that you said it I understand! Peace! (but no green because everybody here will hate me hehe!)
Stop talking to the mirror dude!
They just needed an excuse to watch the race from up there.
I wonder who's fuel greenpeace use to power their vans, cars a
Do everywhere greenpeace...
BUT NOT IN F1... DO AHEAD OF SHELL GAS STATIONS BUT NOT IN F1!
They had a really good view for the start.....good protest!
Holy shit. Flying hippies.
MrGamerBoy Coolest people on Earth you mean !
remember that F1 scene from iron man 2 that's that guy that's the villain I think is Greenpeace with evil super powers
I think they made it not to be well received or be liked by people, but to publicize the truth about what's happening at the arctic. I bet you didn't know about what's going on at the arctic. Now you do, and me, and everyone that watches this video.
I have to admit, I am WITH anti-pollution, but this is definetly not the way to do it BY FAR
I've heard several reports saying they blocked the view for some fans.
I'm super bummed that I still haven't see the video yet where the protester gets wrestled down by one of the grid girls
Is Bernie Ecclestone really suggesting to Dr Helmut Marko to cut the ropes of the Greenpeace protesters??
* V-Power against Greenpeace
Fucking Greenpeace!
Not at a Grand Prix where people have come to enjoy Motorsport at its finest. It could also be potentially dangerous to the protesters if there's a crash.
I was praying they would throw them off the building.
Bunch of hippies
Erm.. Why? Or are you going to spout caps-lock insults because you can't come up with a good reason? Like I said, I have nothing against Greenpeace but these demonstrators got in the way so that paying customers couldn't see the race. The flypast thing they did was fine and the remote banners were actually genius, but getting in the way of the fans is selfish and just put me against supporting them. What's your problem?
I think it is more in you should understand, that that behavior of using oil as a normal thing in life is wrong. Every one who gets pissed by this kind of protest is just pissed because he feels personaly attacked. That means they know, that they are involved in all that shit that happens in the wolrd but don't care and it stinks if anyone comes out of the blue and tell you that your the reason why.
ofcourse it is, they got there illegaly, and could harm themselves and others, Im absolutely sure they told him to stay down and he just standed up again, and the best thing is that once they got down security beated the shit out of this guys and I agree with that, they shouldn't be there and OFCOURSE they shoudnt be rappelling
Worthy cause but criminal waste of funds by spending it on VIP passes for the event. All that for what? They didn't get the TV coverage they wanted. The people booed them off. Greenpeace made a fool of themselves.
Winner of this: tv director.
This had to be a Greenpeace camera person, the FOM didn't show any of this on the race broadcast or on the highlites on Formula1.com
Maybe YES, but that's the reason to do it again and again ... maybe it's not your future, but for sure somebody else's !
less than 1 lap of those 750 hp monsters
Lmao
I do know what they are talking about and i still agree with the previous poster.
I think F1 isn't a place for this!
3:40 on the right side: Is there a reason to act like this ???
quien viene del video de efeuno xd
Must of hit a nerve not 2 show on tv. Must be true then lol
Tell me one activist that won't be accused of the same shit when trying to change something.
The first thing you hear is "Those guys just look for the interest". Basic devalue the messenger and you devalue the message type of thing.
Maybe they are maybe they aren't but that should stop you from going and searching to see what Shell does and see if they deserve criticism or not.
You must be from 'Murica.
Really? I doubt Formula 1 really has much of an effect on the climate anyway, it's just a tiny part of a much bigger problem. I'm sure the server power RUclips uses doesn't really help too much either, and if people want to watch something they've paid to see then let them. Stopping the use of CFCs etc. is/was a great cause, but 2 hours of racing 20 times a year isn't really worth disrupting. People that are destroying rainforests are the selfish ones, not people watching a race.
Climate change is gonna happen, BUT New resources say 90% factory's cause climate change, 7% traffic and 3% motorsport
@@rimi430 yeah, f1 is a small part of the problem
i mean... its not just 2 hours its all that its involved. development of the cars , the parts used, tire manufacturing, track manteinance, transport , people and waste...its still an small part of the bigger picture but still huge...change its not bad and waste reduction neither... i loved the v8s and the v10s...but f1 has to help too...
Someone call the national burn center hotline
Some people will do everything to see an F1 race...
What is your opinion about all this?
shell advertising before this video
Talk about bad security.
Yes, and we still don't care.
Biofuel my dear
buuuuurrrrrnnnn!!!
unfassbar das gehört sich nicht und war echt unpassend
Really makes you want to fill up your Chev V8 with V-Power 100 and fly around the Nurburgring till it's spent.
Is that something bad ?
schelbart
Yes, it is an event people payed to see and greenpeace almost ruined it
one geastion for greenpeace why in SPA race circuit?????
Thanks for posting this video. Non violent, good-humoured protest against Shell's taking massive risks with the environment.
I wonder wich fuel did they use for the parachutes
give them that power by donating
Hahaha, Bernie is such a manlet!
Lol
Its great to hear the crowd agreeing to the goals of Greenpeace :D
ACME fuel
That was the most exciting thing to happen in Spa 2013.
2020
It's because the event was sponsored by Shell. The attack was against the Shell corporation and the devastation they are causing to Arctic life and our future. Google the facts, then figure out what's more important..
Time will tell. Never be dumb enough to claim victory before it's over. You've obviously never heard the story of the The Tortoise and The Hare by Aesop; shit dude, I learned that as a toddler. Keep running Earl Hare.
That was really cool. I don't agree with them, but still cool.
I just want people to have a choice as to what they watch, not have people force it down their throats. FOM should've invited the activists to do an interview instead of pretending they don't exist and the activists shouldn't have disrupted the podium, just have banners and the flypast. Just my opinion :)
It's wonderful. Greenpeace activists were trying to spread knowledge of a really important issue and doing it in a way which didn't impair the enjoyment of the race for spectators. I think they were very respectful and also very brave, and I hope their protest works.
i think what they did is completely pointless when surrounded by motoracing enthusiasts. really not the place to complain about fossil fuel, but as long as they were doing no harm to anyone nor to the sport itself...why not, it's their right
the right way would be cut the rope from the highest point, act like if you was going to bring them up and just when they are on the highest point... "UPSS butter fingers"
молодцы )
The race still went on, Shell will still drill the arctic, and this will have no effect on
Shell's public image. The people that watch motor racing support efforts to get more oil, because it is necessary for the thing they love most, cars.
It does, however, make Greenpeace look like a bunch of 2 year olds kicking and screaming to get their message out. What an annoyance...
Ironie, my friend!
More power to Greenpeace!
Hero
so genial von greenpeace!!!
Electric F1 racing!
Brilliant!!
You like your demos to take place out of sight and out of mind. You summed up how you feel with "I used to attend eco meetings/lectures but...".
Well I used to used to fight against slavery but...
They have a chopper at every track, just make some good food out of em.
Greenpeace! We suport you :D
Ha, ha, why you separate headlines and action is very odd. Headlines lead to action and vice versa. Thankfully Greenpeace have earned the majority respect so that their once single voice is now heard worldwide. I see you're bitter as yours isn't, no matter how much joy you take in denigrating those who care for this planet. That makes you the fool.
BTW I suggest you don't watch the news tonight. You'll get your knickers in a twist all over again for nothing.
Come back in a few years when you're home is flooded yearly from rising waters and food costs a fortune due to continual flooding and droughts. We'll see who acts like a 12 year old then.
yei :3 greenpeace!!
Oh how terrible. Sod the world as long as people an see a silly car race.
You're laughable if this is really your argument.
And we know what happens to your type.
The lady doth protest too much.
MAGNIFIQUE !
+1 for Greenpeace -1 for the corrupt Shell
they protect the environment by frontally face his enemy.... salute to all environment activists who barely show his concern to the world...
Formula races suck, no one needs 'em. I hate the sound and suggest that for those who dig this, a monitor broadcasting the sound of the motors should be installed their homes and play they the sound 24/7 !
This might be 4 year late, but please go fuck yourself.
Nick Gregory Ignorance man. Thy don't appreciate the greatness of this sport.
They*
MegaPlexy I'd love it if I heard and f1 car for 24/7!
could not have happened to a better sport!!
