- Dragon's Dogma 2 versus Elden Ring | Which is better?
World, presentation, combat... which of these two Japanese action RPGs takes the crown? Dragon's Dogma and Souls are franchises that started in the same rough time period, and I love both of them - Dragon's Dogma only has two entries, how does the second hold up against the most recent 'Souls' game?

The most disappointing part of DD2 for me was it took none of the lessons learned from DDDA or DDO
I found that very surprising. I know Itsuno didn't work on DA or Online but still, damn.
What were the lessons to be learned from DDDA and DDO (which i unfortunately never could play) in you point of view ?
Dd2 couldve been close to ER's level had it been finished. I really enjoyed my DD2 playthrough, but like the first game, i find myself very disappointed with it because of what it could've been. I really hope a DLC can improve it.
question regarding fragment of elden ring in 21:07 please tell me what armor is that as it looks great, tried to make out what armor is it but cannot find it on wiki, is it custom from mod or something?
Elden Ring was my GOTY for 2022. And I can't wait for the upcoming DLC.
I've been attempted to play DD2. But a lot of friends recommended me against it in it's current state.
Guess I will enjoy Stellar Blade for a while, and it's a game I would recommend to Silver Mont 🙂.
comparing dd2 to er is like comparing tetris to pong
They are both pretty addictive and some people are so much better at tetris than I am that it makes me feel like it's not even worth playing?
In some aspects yes, but the main customer will be watching both as it is practically the same demographic.
You can absolutely compare tetris to pong though, you just can't say which is better based on that comparison
No , Elden ring is overrated. Characters look like crap and story is crap as well. It's just a game with a fan base because from soft.
Comparing these 2 games is possibly a crime.
I think there's some interesting comparisons to make!
Great analysis, a little harsh on DD2, but that might be due to the fact that ER is much more popular. Both games are great! I hope DD has a future now that CAPCOM has finally noticed the game exists.
I had really high expectations for dd2 so my criticism for it may be harsher then if say, I had never played the first and hadn't been waiting so long for it haha. That said, I think most of them are fair.
Dd2 I hope gets updated and improved as many of these issues can be solved!
Much better comparison point than what i expected, and true there are some things exclusive to both games.
One thing I didn't expect was for DD2 world and story to be so underbaked and rushed respectively. It smells of cut content/budget cuts
ER has interactions too, oil pot to fire arrow being one. Electric moves in water is another. ER also has a hurricane kind if anyway, its zamor storm. Not all of ERs magic are bullets, incantations have AOE, area of denial, buffs and enchants.
Haha fair enough, I think it's just drastically less than DD.
dragons dogma is just a better rpg, in fact its the best action "tabletop simulator" at all
we can only hope that dragons dogma 2 will reach the same state one day
I love both games and they have they're amazing merits but ER still reigns supreme imo. Cant get enough of both tbh. 🔥
I liked DD2 but it is not even in the same ballpark as ER, not even remotely close
I think that is partially why it's very interesting, and it goes to show what makes a game popular/good isn't always what people might expect it to be.
I think DD2 is superior due to the level of character control. ER was incredibly annoying the second platforming came into play.
er is dark souls open world
@DjdhdNewlowueebqs elden ring it is open world?? Hmmm mite have to try it. For myself its hard to find decent new games anymore.
Elden ring is a better overall game. But I liked DD2 more, exploration and combat is better. But enemy variaty and play styles(weapons) is better in Elden Ring.
Elden Ring has the best exploration I have ever seen in a game. I scoured every inch of that map. Every item you get feels useful. Most games suffer because so much of exploration isn't rewarding due to trash repear loot. ER does not suffer from that at all.
I’m so torn. I everyone says elden ring is better but it seems so difficult. This looks like a good game to play while we wait for monster hunter wild. As this looks like a baby version. And people say the combat is so much better in dd2. So it’s hard choice.
Really hard to compare. This actually makes people going into DD2, that came after, thinking is similar to ER, what might disappoint some
Ehh... it's similar in that they are both kinda open world action RPGs, but it wasn't my intent to suggest they are the same type of game or whatever. I just think they make a very interesting case study.
After putting 500 hours in both dd1 and dd2 I still think Elden ring is better in a lot of ways but the combat and graphics are so nice in dragons dogma but the travel sucks and so does the enemy variety. The lack of Qol improvements missing from the first game is crazy and the story is much less memorable and the biggest crime was the theme song you can’t even remember what it is but for dd1 I can instantly start humming the tune. Over all dd2 is bitter sweeet it could of been so much better going back to Elden ring shows the problems with dd2
er is only better in difficulty and quantity content
At least DD2 allows Staves to have a basic spell attack instead of a worthless BONK attack. Outside of spells, Casters were massively underutilized in Elden Ring.
Glintstone sorceries Glinstone Icecrag, Carian Slicer, and Night sorceries exist, lol.
The Carian Regal Sceptor has Spinning Weapon and it does a ridiculous amount of damage.
If you want a basic spell attack, you have the agency to use them, or not.
@@panzer00
Yet every single spell you described isn't considered a basic spell attack or what some TTRPGs call Cantrips.
A Cantrip should be an FP-free spell attack that scales directly off the Magic Scaling of a Seal/Staff.
Instead, Casters are trapped with essentially 3 dead buttons unless they choose to play as a Spellblade, which defeats the purpose of playing as a Caster.
Mentioning Carian Regal Scepter's Spinning Weapon Ash is even worse, since it's basically the only Ash of War available for Caster builds out of 93+ Ash of Wars.
Yeah, I think I mentioned it in the video but anything that isn't melee is largely just a way to augment your melee, in Elden Ring, as opposed to being a different playstyle. So in that sense, DD2 offers more gameplay variety between playstyles.
@@Battleguild lmfao. Go play D&D nerd. You're asking for a magic system from a completely different game space to be included in Elden Ring; that is unreasonable.
Yea just offhand the staff and get an actual sword you milk dud. There’s several FP-Free move sets that scale off of int.
DD2 is the weirdest damn game, almost entirely devoid of style or personality or character, yet somehow is really fun to play and explore. They really need to step up the lore and personality though, everything is so generic and bland I'm actually shocked the game caught on. The open ended exploration and lack of hand holding is awesome, the world needs to be more interesting though.
Did you play the first game? It had far better personality imo, it's still my favorite game of all time and it holds up very well
@@cloudbloom I have not! I do own it though and have been meaning jump in now that I finished DD2 a couple of days ago.
@@gmorkins6006 nice I think you'll dig it. DD2 improved on various aspects but the first game has a distinct charm to it that hasn't been replicated. Also the dark arisen expansion is amazing, they really listened to the fans who wanted more difficult endgame content and it delivered. I've put thousands of hours into the game and I still want to go back and play it now haha
@@cloudbloom I'll be checking it out then for sure, I appreciate the info here!
It might be a little hard in some ways to go from DD2 to DD1/DDDA but I do think at the moment, the first is a more complete title, and a better game. Hopefully DD2 gets polished up to that level and gets its own expansion.
I have 500 hours on Elden Ring, couldn't play any more than that and it's been out for 2 years. I'm already at 300 hours on DD2. Elden Ring's combat was disappointing to me. 7 games spanning over 10 years at this point and the gameplay still feels mostly the same as it always has. They only did things truly different once, with Sekiro, and that game ruined the rest for me because it's just so much better.
DD2 is solid. The physics feel overdone sometimes, slopes are very aggravating in some situations, but the game is always more engaging than Elden Ring is. It's a really easy game, unless you go out of your way to make it harder for yourself by not using pawns or broken skills. The game feels completely different and even more engaging if you don't use some of those intended mechanics. That's how I'm getting my replay value out of it anyway.
I'm hoping at some point we'll get an update, an expansion, whatever, that adds something like BBI into the game. A reason to play through combat arenas again and again whilst working for some items or whatever. (Even better if they add in a 2 player optional mode)
I 💯 agree with you. I stopped playing ER at around 600 hours. Replay becomes too predictable due to the exact same spawns over and over. DD2 I’m at 750 hours and still want to play. I think DD2 has a lot more to give if you have the imagination for it. And the fact the world is somewhat random keeps my interest. DD2 just feels alive. ER feels more scripted… and often a bit dead / empty.
Better boss fights and graphics?
Only thing DD is better than elden ring is playing as a sorcerrer.
And physics. And gameplay variety. Those are pretty objective, everything else is very subjective.
@@SilverMontdragons dogma 2 pretty much destroys elden ring from a gameplay standpoint
After play ER dlc fighting countless dragons hacking away at their feet and coming back to dragons dogma 2 it just shows how much better the gameplay in dragons dogma 2
DD2 has way to much backtracking. Just constant goblins and dog fights. It got annoying.
Dd2 doesn’t have enough points of interest. Makes the world feel shallow and why they place shit mobs every 20 steps. No unique bosses anywhere make the great combat get stale quick. Elden ring wins without question.
nahh elden bored me to death
I am right and you are wrong.
I personally prefer the gameplay of DD2. However ER is a very special game. Both are outstanding games in their own right.
I find ER more ‘scripted’ as opposed to DD2’s ‘alive’ world. DD2’s world is more dynamic and often creates moments of complete chaos from nowhere. After your first play-through on ER you know where and when an enemy is going to appear.
DD2 has kept my attention longer thanks to the semi-random spawns and variety of combat options. ER 600 hours vs DD2 700 and counting.
Not a fan of ER world design and combat style. DD2 is everything I like in ARPG. Don’t care much about the story, the combat is great.
I hope they patch in some more combat related content for the game - something like BBI would be amazing
@@SilverMont More monsters variety and harder difficulties would be great!
Pump your brakes there bud elden ring is great dd2 is good
No! Hit the brakes!
I can't STOP IT!
@@SilverMont hope you got insurance
The entire facility just blew up like 200 times. S'rough.
DD2 doesn't hold a candle to DD1.
Whilst the second game has some improvements, for right now yeah I think the first one is a better title, especially as it comes with the expansion pack.
Elden Ring:
1- development started around 2016-2017 (5-6 years in the making)
2 - 11+ years of materials/backgrounds/assets/level-design/character model at their disposition
3- final vision of miyazaki, the ultimate "souls-game", miazaki "magnum opus" -> bb still better imo
4- george rr martin says a lot
DD2
1- development started around 2019 (4-5 years in the making)
2- new engine, new material, everything from scratch, hell... even a completely new climbing system
3- game suffered a "mini devopment hell" because of covid and schedule throwbacks
4- budget was not nearly as any of "big-capcom titles", but was considerable larger than DD1, which is a good thing
Final comparison:
Long story short: DD2 feels 25% of a game while Elden Ring is a fucking 101% game. Place variety in Elden Ring is like out of question, is a sacrilegium to even suggest such comparison. Enemy and weapon variety is also a big thing in ER. Although... I feel that DD2 has a better forgery/augmnent gearing system if you look at the big picture (dragonforging your itens will also add a subtle effect onto it). Also, classes/vocations in DD2 is insanely better because it's exactly a "class system", not a placebo.
-> I did play both games for over than 200 hours and I love both equally.
That's a good point about ER having assets dating back to 2014 (and perhaps earlier) to draw from. So far as I'm aware, every game since Dark Souls II (so BB, Sekiro, Dark Souls III, ER etc) have all been on the same engine. Which has probably made the creation and re-use of assets pretty useful for 'em.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is on the RE Engine, which whilst it isn't "new" it is for the series, and it's the first open world game on the engine too. I don't know how porting assets from MT Framework works out, but it's definitely another hurdle.
What is "Place variety" for you, if i can answer?....
Combat is king and dogma takes the crown between it and elden ring
But ER is annoying and infuriating AF.
Git Gud💅
@@kwest4204 I have beaten everything except for Gideon on r1 with +0 longsword. Let me tell you getting good doesn't stop the game from being annoying and infuriating.
@@rhythmmandal3377 i say this in the context of comparison "annoying and infuriating" maybe you struggle with anger management maybe not, either way sounds like a skill issue. Excluding ds1 its the easiest souls game. At least it's hardships don't come from poor performance and bad game design like dd2.
@@kwest4204 its not me it's the game. No sane person will find the bullshit of that game anything other than infuriating and annoying.
That's how I felt about Midir in Dark Souls III haha, I can beat him but I just think he's a tedious fight. I think ER fares better than DaS3 in that sense, but parts of the game can be irritating to deal with at times. Take those little imp enemies who are in like every dungeon. They aren't exactly hard but they can be annoying to fight when they just kinda swoosh around.
DRAGONS DOGMA is mid as hell, comparing it to ELDEN RING is unacceptable and a crime.
Comparing things is useful, not illegal.
elden ring is just dark souls open world
