Appreciate this video , this nails the exact problem I have been experiencing and trying to explain the shifter being unlocked while still not allowing a shift to reverse to anyone just resulted in a blank stare without comprehension, followed by instructions to check the electrical shifter lock which is clearly not the problem. I am a visual learner, and this video was a great help to me in understanding why the shifter unlocks but stays locked, and what parts need to be looked at to fix the problem.
Thanks Billy! This fixed my problem. Turns out that cable releases tension when the key is turned on. But I don’t know if my shifter has a broken part or the spring inside the cable lever is too weak or if I have too much dirt and corrosion in the system. Probably a combination of two of those. But even with my cable disconnected it still would not shift until I sprayed some lubrication up in that lever area and then worked it back and forth several dozen times. Thanks for the post! FYI people, to remove the shift lever handle just pull straight up really hard.
Thank you so much! The other vidoes and forums said I had to pull the shifter release the white tab thing on the side and that didn't work! But for some reason that wire thing you unhooked solved my problem!
This helped me find my problem. The bushing on the end of the shift cable had dry rotten and fallen off. The dealer and all the shops say you have to replace the cable but look of amazon or NAPA for a "TD1KIT". That is the bushing you need and it works perfectly for $30.
I ended up driving it like that for over a year until a car ran into me and totaled it! Someone responded on part 3 of this video saying the ambushing of the shift linkage bushing falls apart over time and the cable becomes loose. *D Boi 1 month ago Yeah thanks for the video man I just got done with mine working fine now I figured out its ambushing that falls apart over time that cable becomes loos sometimes it snags so when you push to the right on shifter the plastic piece the cable is on moves up pulling the cable up the cables a tensioner almost it seems like cause it works fine without it.* I hope this helps! billymix1804 yeah I found the cable runs to under the steering wheel at the point of connection it was busted. It’s called the ignition park shifting cable. Had to get another one.
Hey there! It is called the "shifter cable". Number 8 on the picture seen in the following link/diagram: www.jeepz.com/forum/images/imported/2009/06/330517-3.jpg Let me know if you have any other questions.

I did the same exact thing you did. Didn’t work.
What is the name of the thing you discussed?

billymix1804 that shifter cable looks different from the one in the video.
the cable he disconnects is the park interlock cable. the shifter cable is underneath the shifter on a patriot.
Thanks for the clarification, David!
good temporary fix, just to move the car out of the way. Very dangerous to ride like this in traffic.
Lol this is no fix!!
