Another interesting detail conveying the intention for Rosaria to have been a boss fight is her character ID, c5210. Characters are often "grouped" together by their IDs, with From Software reserving certain ID ranges for certain types of NPCs. Going back at least as far as Demon's Souls, the 5000 range of IDs has historically been where they put the bosses. Out of every NPC in the 5000 range in Dark Souls III, only two aren't bosses, the Fire Witch and Rosaria. I made a previous video covering how the Fire Witch was likely designed as a boss that was later replaced by Pontiff and now we can see Rosaria's in a similar position.

The ID for the Deacons comes after Rosaria, so I wouldn't be surprised if Rosaria's fight was concepted first and they weren't happy with the execution, so they created the Deacons to sort of salvage some of the ideas. Rennala's version of the fight is quite a strange one, so it makes sense they may have had a hard time getting it right for Rosaria.

Ima be honest, I always though Rosaria had slug legs with a human Torso, I didn't realise she's embracing one of the mangrubs.

    • @GuitarGuise
      @GuitarGuise 2 года назад +36

I don't know if that necessarily make more sense than them originally wanting to reuse the Rosaria concept (reminder that even that is speculation), then building the phase 2 after that to fit the story. After all, at a meta level they needed a rebirth mechanic to allow players to respec. That may have been more top of mind than the Rennala phase 2 fight, which itself is kinda a reuse of Vacuous Rom's boss arena.
Plus, phase 1 and the amber egg rebirthing does fit majorly into the story, so I don't think it was just to reuse a past concept.
Side note and SPOILERS: I suspect that the amber egg is a hint about how and why Radagon is Marika. Was she able to use the egg to create a copy of herself? Was it imperfect? I'd actually love to hear alternative or debunking theories to that. I haven't looked into why Radagon would be Marika. I would much rather look more into he game or have discussions online about it, instead of just looking up theories 🙂

It was speculated that the mostly useless Rosaria's Fingers covenant was originally going to be a summon boss covenant, which would use that invasion trigger area. Perhaps the concept was a player boss who was assisted by Rosaria during the fight, but due to the complexity of such an idea it got chopped up into bits and redistributed, with the player boss being used in the Ringed City and the concept of what Rosaria would do being used in Elden Ring.

I think it could be possible that not only Rennala and Rosaria have ties, but possibly Rosaria and Fia. We come across an npc invader in DS3 (Heysel) a handful of times and eventually find their weapon and headgear on a mangrub corpse just in front of Rosaria.
Perhaps "Fia's Champions" are a continuation of something that would have been "Rosaria's Champions" where we might fight Heysel, Kirk. An idea that also translates to the Church of Fillianore and her guardians.

If rosaria had a boss fight, I suspect it might have functioned like the boss where players get summoned to fight players. Since the room is too small to be of a real functioning boss arena. The player would have to fight an invading boss player + the mangrubs that fall from the cribs.
Since boss rosaria was scrapped or since they wanted to move the player boss fight later into the game, they put it in the ring city DLC marking the end of rosaria boss fight. Later the concept to be used in elden ring

If you look at the entrance to Rosaria's area the metal gates have been forced apart and the whole area is covered with the same sort of sludge found later near Aldritch's boss room. Given both Rosaria and the Deacons are in the same area perhaps they repurposed the group fight idea for the Deacons of The Deep.

    • @Blacklands
      @Blacklands 2 года назад +12

@@ianjonas5593 I assume they're talking about either the asset and enemy reuse, the balancing issues (especially endgame damage), the boss design (which some people don't like), the performance problems, or that they made co-op multiplayer and invasions even worse and also the netcode in general kinda (even) worse.
I personally think the reuse is mostly fine, maybe the game world could have been a _little_ smaller, and they probably shouldn't have reused Godrick and Astel. All big open world games reuse stuff, many have way, WAY less unique stuff than Elden Ring lol.
The balancing is definitely worse than it has ever been. It feels like the game got released too early and they couldn't do a final balancing pass, especially on the endgame stuff. There's also just so much broken equipment/magic in the game, this has always been a thing ofc but it's way worse than ever before afaik.
I also personally think the boss design is fine. Yes, even Malenia, except for Waterfowl Dance starting too quickly to have any chance to escape if you're using e.g. colossal weapons and you just did _any_ animation (but I did manage to beat her with the Guts sword, it just took even more tries lol).
The performance problems were indeed large, again it feels like they didn't have time left for more optimization, in the end. I think it's gotten better by now?
Multiplayer... I think they dropped the ball there. Also, I miss covenants, especially for invasions.

Dont get me wrong, i think it is a masterpiece and one of the best games ever made, but that dont means its perfect, just like DS1, flaws (at the end) feel like a torn on the side, annoying but not experience ruining.
      My biggest issues are:
-Enemy dmg: how in Gwyn name i have 99 VIT and a heavy armor + more vit from stuff yet i get 2 shoted by some random enemy past the mid game? I feel like since they gave so much tools to the player they just took the DMG from all enemies and made it x8 times what it was, i get that its a dark souls and "git gud" and all that, but at times it feels cheap
      -Lack of armors:
theres a REALLY lack of armors in the game, specially until midgame. this is purely personal tho
-Balance: I dont like the pvp of souls, i hate tryhards and gankers, i personally do not like katanas, but every single DS (but 3) is a katana spam fest, DEX weapons in general ALWAYS had been problematic, but in this one is even more insane, i do not play pvp but still, kinda crazy.
At least they dont rail road you into pvp if you want to get the game to the 100% (or farm 40 hours for pact items)
-I did not had too much issues with FPS and performance, but that means nothing with my Rig (3070 RTX, I7 8700K) but IT MUST have been an issue since both capcom and From patched things quite fast.

I'm still under the impression that Malenia is what they had planned for a Lady Tomoe fight in Sekiro but they just changed all the lightning aspects to the Rot theme for Malenia. So many of her attacks strike me as Sekiro moves she's got big sweeps, lots of flurries, a grab attack and of course the lunging thrust which I want to Mikiri counter everytime she does it.

One of the things I find super interesting, that I didn't realize until I saw the contrasting models, is that many of the women in Dark Souls are sexualized but in a bizarre/perverse setting (not unlike Catholicism).
In this example: Rosaria is wearing thin silk, she is in a bed chamber, she beckons the player with her hand, she is gorgeous but we are not able to see her eyes---and then she's holding, and surrounded by, these gross looking pustule creatures. Rennala is wearing a thick gown, she is in a library, she repels the player with her hands on her egg, she is "plain" but we are able to observe her entire face, and she is surrounded by relatively "normal" looking humanoids. I always thought the women of Dark Souls were stylized to be beautiful to be looked at, but now I see the difference in Elden Ring with how women are portrayed, and am now thinking that the women of Dark Souls are beautiful for the same reason the game is dreary and nightmarish.

Love the kind of associations in these videos. It's kind of embarrassing to speculate on how intentional a lot of it is, but FROM's games seem to have an very identifiable philosophical approach to iterating on games. The worlds, the characters, the games, the overlapping designs and mechanics; all have this kind of convoluted (and I mean that positively) feel that just really resonates with the philosophical elements of the game.
It's almost hard not to just see it in everything in the games, and it feels like in Elden Ring you can practically feel it in it's bones. The open world areas and how they flow, how their position is characterized laying the elden ring over it. The way something like base damage vs scaling has a character.
What a series. And your content feels like something that really lets me enjoy that.

Considering the "arena" itself could be described as quite small and awkward for a major boss... It's possible it was intended for Yellowfinger Heysel, or Longfinger Kirk, or even both to be Phase 1 - Being summoned to protect their Mother of Rebirth.
Then upon the defeat of her "children", she could possibly have warped the arena to be more fitting of a boss-fight, and become the boss herself, just like Rennala.
Maybe the problem was finding a way to contextualise such a transition within who they intended Rosaria to be. Her in-game role was to act as an NPC to respec builds - So killing her wouldn't make sense.
They clearly found a work-around for that issue in Elden Ring with Rennala, but at the very least, it's interesting to see the amount of overlap between Rosaria and Rennala, and how each of them turned out in their respective games.

I like your use of Twilight Princess and its themes of reflection as twilight is usually associated with to reflect on cut content ❤️

I don't know if it matters much, but the fact you can also get Rosaria's soul, and it can be transposed into a boss miracle also lends to the fact it was likely planned as a boss fight. I love all these subtle connection videos, please keep them coming!
