I think the reason One Piece has lasted 20 years is because of the story. Each character is so well developed that I feel like they're real people who are my real friends! I think the reason this show works where others like it or similar failed is the characters. You get invested quickly because it effecticely shows you their personalities, their dreams, their flaws, etc. Everything else can vary in quality but if you nail the characters, you gain a lot of good will from your audience.

Also a lot of "popular" intellectual properties these days are just grim dark misery the whole way through. Not that tragedy is bad, it is just in every bit of new shows and existing IP. Yes there are plenty of really dark moments and topics in One Piece, but the positive personality of it is a breath of fresh air.
Also unlike the same trend to make the main protagonist dark and brooding has been flooding the media recently. Luffy is such a positive person, you can't help to like him. Maybe not sometimes (when his optimism gets him in trouble or food oriented stupidity) but everyone has their flaws and seeing a hero be very enthusiastic and happy makes most viewers smile.
Also the colors are so bright compared to the bland appearance of things like Disney remakes. Perfectly casted, manga creator directly involved, and a soundtrack with a new theme but also old ones (almost teared up when I heard Bink's Sake playing in the bar with Shanks, and again when We Are played) is a perfect combo for entertainment.

So, I'm not exactly a One Piece fan, myself, but having worked in the animation industry, of course I knew of One Piece ever since it started its manga run in 1997, when I was still a fresh high school student.
At the time, end of 90's, there were 3 top mangas that came out roughly during the same years, that were becoming the triumvirate of the manga world : Hunter X Hunter, Shaman King, and One Piece. Both mangakas (manga authors) were friends, and/or had worked with each other in some way, and they were basically the Spielberg/Lucas/Coppola of the manga world at that time. Later, when the early 2000's came, 2 other mangas came into existence that would change the landscape: Naruto and Bleach, supplanting Shaman King and Hunter in the Big 3 trinity. The only one that remained unchanged was One Piece. Already by then, the series was considered venerable, as it had been publishing for 4-5 years already.
I was an avid fan of all of them and was reading them all week after week, all BUT One Piece. It was the only one I didn't follow religiously, coz I wasn't fan of the artstyle (although as an apprentice future animator, I respected the fact that Oda went for such a personal graphic style, in such a streamlined industry), and as a storyteller myself, I prefer stories that have a clear beginning, middle, and end. One Piece felt like a villain of the week/month/year series, endlessly jumping from one villain to another, without any end in sight, and since I was already a bit burned out on that type of stories with Dragon Ball in my youth, after reading about 10 tomes of the manga, I just dropped One Piece to focus on the others (that were already all living rent free in my head).
Now, fast forward 20+ years and Naruto and Bleach, both legendary on their own and with an extreme longevity themselves, have now long since been part of history... And still, One Piece is still going strong !
In a merciless manga industry where the biggest series could get cancelled anytime if there is even a remote sign of flinching in the audience's interest (which is exactly what shockingly happened to Bleach, another one of the Big 3, despites its 15 years of spotlight as one of Japan's 3 national treasures), the fact that One Piece avoided such a sad fate is a testament to not only its endearing characters, but also its consistent quality of writing, as much as the crazy looney tunes/manga artstyle.
And there's certainly a ton of reasons why this manga and anime have been going on so successfully for more than 25 years now.
Even though I haven't personally followed it myself, when I talk about it from my friends who did (and even more so, now that I've seen the Live action adaptation), I totally understand the reason why they're so into it. It's most definitely one of the longest running mangas ever, and it's all thanks to Eichiro Oda's fantastic writing. The man purposefully created the most optimistic, dream-pushing and fun-loving character in existence, Luffy, precisely because he wanted to push Japanese people, usually stuck in a society with dreadful working conditions, stuck up in a feudal hierarchical society, to follow their dreams more.
He is, in a sense, the living embodiment of "follow your dreams, and great things will follow" as we could see with the immense success his work has been getting for the past 2 decades ! No wonder he's got such a devoted fanbase, as his manga is such a ray of sunshine at its core.
If anything, you could almost compare Oda to the Japanese pendant of Stan Lee. Maybe not in terms of longevity or diversity of work (his only one notable piece (ha) of work is One Piece), but he's been at it since he was 17, and still at it now that he's 43 ! That's just wild ! He's by VERY far the most successful comic book artist in Japan ever, and is kinda viewed as a god, there.
And within it this 25 years long body of work, he created so many iconic characters, both main, support characters, and villains and antagonists, that would give the entire Marvel roster a run for their money (and he did it all on his own, instead of having an army of writers, sometimes inconsistent with each other over the years), so you could tell why this series is so special in the hearts of so many people who have been following it for the past 25 years !
And that might also explain why they are as welcoming, since they have been the weebs on the fringe before for the past 2 decades, so now that One Piece is cool for the mainstream, thanks to this Netflix live adaptation, that makes them cool by extension, so of course they're gonna lure you into their cult ^^.
    Welcome, welcome ^^ !

I'm really glad you're enjoying the series so far. I've been watching your content since the very early AMC days with Campea, Ellis and Schnepp, so grew to respect you opinion on things. You've always been respectful and fair, even towards things that didn't appeal to you so glad you've taken a liking to this. That said, I've been watching One Piece since it was out on VHS which has been most of my life now and can honestly say this is one of the best on going stories in any media. As good as the show, writing and craftsmanship of the series is, the thing that has shocked me the most about this version is how it's managed to expose this story to new people. It's done what LotR, Game of thrones and Harry Potter has done which is expose people to that author's world. Not everyone who saw those then went on to read all the books, but at least makes you realize how vast that world really is. Hope your videos on this series get more viewership and I'll certainly be following you on this journey on beyond.

I'm glad you're enjoying the show so far. I honestly never thought that someone could take such a crazy, comical world (with devil fruits, snail phones, etc.) and translate it into live-action in such a palatable way for non-manga/anime audiences.
The One Piece manga seamlessly shifts from ridiculous comedy and action, to heavy dramatic moments that have always given the series heart and uplifting inspiration, and I think the show has balanced it well so far.
I'm really surprised, and pleased, that they created such long episodes as well, because there's a lot of source material to cover, and I'm impressed with how much the showrunners were able to cover in the first season.
I hope you continue to enjoy the show! It's also just great to see new people enjoy a series that I've been reading and watching for decades.

I think the reason why many people is now on board with this iteration, even the og manga and anime fans is that it shows it was made from a place of love, to the story, to the characters and specially to the essence. That's what make it special. Great reaction, and I hope to see your review from The First Slam Dunk movie sometime!

Loving the reactions, and yes, we love newcomers. As a fan base, we LOVE sharing this story with anyone we can. We love it so much, that we believe you are truly missing something if you haven't experienced it.
You also very clearly have a love for this type of world. Your love of the den den mushi(the snail phones) is straight up one piece fan energy. Hope to see you continue and finish this story.
This season only one overs about 5% of the current story, or less. So this is a franchise that can go very far. This season is almost like the tutorial if it were a video game.
The scale, the stakes, the world, the character, and just everything gets cranked up to 11 starting next season. And even then, the story just keeps climbing.
Its one of those rare stories that is this good even early on, but never falls back, and always maintains an upward trend in storytelling.
Over 1000 chapters in, and next chapter is still possibly the most hype and greatest chapter yet released, and we were saying the same thing on chapter 100...200...300.. Etc. That alone is an achievement nearly impossible in most stories, as usually they lose quality or fall off.
If this maintains, season 4 will be a literal masterpiece.. And yet.. The story will still keep getting better, even after masterpiece status. (water7-enies lobby for those who know).
This is like game of thrones, if the quality never dropped off and only kept getting better after S5, and enough source content for 20 seasons. Though, arguable a much bigger, better, richer, more intricate, and deeper story than a song of ice and fire, and I'm a book fan there even, one of my favorite series.

It was great watching it again with you. I'm a first timer too. I caught more of the subtle power stuff in the Shanks character during the second viewing. Like when he points to the guy with is hand, it looked like he was surprised his crew-mate shot first. Like he was expecting something else to happen. Maybe it was planned. I dunno. I do know that this IS the sort of deep lore, mystery, and all out wackiness that I enjoy (not to mention I am a Pirate Stan). Reminds me a little of "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" movie with some of the character designs.

love love love that your enjoying this. The story is adapted very well into new mediums and the changes they made to the story fit the new style (Hard to translate the 76 episode first arc scene for scene into live action) and while some things appear out of order or mashed together it all works in the end. As someone who has seen all 1074 anime episodes and the entire live action i can say this is a pretty faithful adaptation. hope to see you on episode 3

I've been watching One Piece for almost 20 years, and the One Piece community has a passion to really share why we love One Piece, but most people won't give it a chance because alot of them don't find the art style appealing (personally I like it). So it's really cool that this live action explains to the other types of audiences as to why we love One Piece, so we are more than happy to add more fans into the community.
