- In this video, I'll be teaching you how to make a DIY Modern Monitor Stand using a small piece of plywood, oak wood, a few tools. This project is styled to look like the Grovemade desk shelf, with the benefit of price savings! This project is great for organizing your technology, and creating a personal space for your laptop, monitor, and various other devices! It is a great beginner woodworking project, and an easy way to make a monitor riser!
Feel free to come up with your own dimensions! However, for my project, the dimensions were the following:

This is such a fantastic video, and it does a fantastic job of replicating some of the nicer monitor stands. One basic addition that I did to take the design a little further is to put a very small chamfer on the upper edges of the shelves to get rid of the sharp edge, as well as the front facing edges on the legs. It doesn’t take much extra time, and is a nice touch of detail, especially if you’re not lining the smaller shelf with some type of fabric.

Nicely done. So, I estimate $100 in materials as most of us need to buy things from scratch in their original amounts (no pro-rating). Then I estimate at least 2 hours to go select everything at the store including travel times, standing in line, asking the clerk, buying, putting everything in the car. Then another 5 hours prep, cutting, sanding, glueing, staining, 2-3 coats of polish, assembling plus drying times so maybe 24-48 hours before you can use it. That rotor tool really made the wood pop so without it, not so nice. Yours turned out very nice. I think it would be a fun weekend project but I can also see that my 7 hours of time is worth more than the $100 you think you are saving for a product that isn’t as primo as the original. That being said, I’m going to give it a try 😂
Hahaha, it does take some work for sure! Especially the first one. But I geninely believe you can knock this one out in a couple of hours! A little longer, because of the drying time. But 2 hours of actual work.

I really like the addition of the fabric on the shelf. I'm always worried that the back of my devices will get scratched when putting them on a shelf, or sliding them around the desk. As for the stain, I like the warmer tones of the Traditional Pecan but, considering the colors of most desk electronics, I think the Golden Oak blends better.

Can you make it like that for bed nightstand?
Tip to ensure you dont drill through without any extra tools: Take the drill bit to measure out how deep you want to drill, then put some painters tape at the mark and around the bit and make a little part sticking out. Now you can drill without any extra tools and you wont go to deep. The reason for the choice of tape is because its very easy to remove and is very visible.
Best of all, as long as you have some tape youll never have to look for any extra tools!

Not sure if this will get answered, I love this DIY and going to use it this week. However my question is can I make this work with Oak 1/2" thick instead of 3/4"? It will be 36 in length over 4 total legs and total height of 3 3/4"

This should be doable with 1/2" Oak, but there are a few things to consider. For example, if there is going to be a lot of weight on top, the wood may bend. Additionally, having something more thick on top also gives the screws a little more material to grab on to. I still think it's doable! But it's important to consider those things I mentioned 🙂
Question….what size 45 degree chamfer bit did you use? Looking them up and see lots of cutting diameter/height options and not sure what to go with for 3/4” plywood. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Chase! Honestly, any size chamfer bit should work. The thing is, the size of the chamfer on the wood will really depend on how deep you set it when adjusting the router. I'd recommend testing with a slight chamfer, and then increasing the depth, based on your preference.

In my case, I used 1 1/2 (1.5") screws. But if you make a reference on the legs, you can honestly use any size as long as it's smaller than the leg.

At first I liked the other color better than the oak. But, at the end, I realy liked the oak one, just thought it would get prettier with black legs.

Hi! this video is amazing I knew I wanted to make my own version of the GM stand but this makes it much easier for me! I know it's been some time but you possibly remember about how much this project cost?
Hey there! Thank you very much for watching! It's a little tricky to break down the cost, sadly. Mostly because it's super diffiucult to find a small piece of plywood that'll work. Most plywood sheets are fairly large, and therefore more expensive! But if I had to recreate this with wooden boards instead of plywood, I estimate it'd cost $50 or so. Including wood, screws, stain and all.
I'm figuring $20 for a long oak board, $3-4 for the legs. Another $10 for the felt with adhesive. And then random little things, like stain, brushes, clear-coat. It's just tricky, because some of those things don't come in small packages. Stain for example, you only really use like 1/10th of what comes in the tin. So if you alredy have some of this stuff, it's much more cost effective.

Great suggestion! I've only sold a couple of them haha. You'd be surprised, this is something that not many people are willing to pay for, even at half the price.
Is there a structural reason for not using plywood on the legs? I am a complete newby all I own is a sander and have access to my dad's drill and I would like to make this.
That is a great question! The legs can definitely be made out of plywood. Since the desk will not be subjected to too much weight, plywood would work just fine. I chose to make mine out of solid wood so that there would be more contrast between the legs and the tabletop (since the plywood edges would be visible on the legs, if I had made them with plywood).
What is the height of it and gap between shelf, the size grovemade gives is very narrow between middle shelf
This one's fairly narrow too. If I remember correctly, the legs were about 3.5" tall. The wood shelf between the legs is about 3/4" thick. So there's about 1 3/8" above and under the shelf.

That is a great question, Brady! I usually don't list measurements, as I think it would help encourage most people to make it a custom size. But I can lay out the dimensions below, if that helps!
Tabletop size: 40" Long, 9" Deep
The legs were 1"x4" wood boards. So they were about 3.5" tall, and a little under 9" long (which is the depth of the tabletop - after using the router to chamfer the edge, the depth changes a little). The shelf was about 14.5" long (between two of the legs). And last, but not least, the two outer legs were positioned 2.5" away from each end of the table.

It's kind of a tricky one, mostly because you can't really buy small amounts of certain materials. The plywood for example -t he full sheet costs $60 in my area, but you don't really need the full sheet. So if you were to just buy a wooden board that's the size of the desk (instead of the plywood), that might cost you around $15, instead of having to buy a full sheet of plywood. As for the desk legs, those were only around $3 total. Now, the stain can cost as low as $5, and the polyurethane I used can cost as low as $8 (but the big benefit is that you don't have to use all of it, so you get to use that for future projects. If you already have some, you just get to save the cost!).
Assuming we leave out the polyurethane and stain, the wood materials can cost as low as $20, and let's suppose another $5 for the screws. And $10 for the fabric on the shelf (you'll have some leftover as well). So definitely below $50, if you plan it out, but potentially much less than that!

Groove made is good quality but crazy expensive.

That's a great idea! And you can even experiment with different shapes and sizes for the desks! One of my favorite things has always been the idea of changing dimensions to fit my workspace, and that's exactly what I did with this desk.

Honestly, I think it's doable with a circular saw and a drill. You can always hand sand 🙂. And to get the nice 45 degree detail on the edge, you can set the circular saw to 45 degrees and run it along the each side.
They do also have places like "Maker Spaces" where you can go and pay an hourly rate to borrow some tools. If there are any near you, that'd be a great option!

200 dollars is expensive but taking into consideration that we don't have those tools to work with you will find the same price or higher :/ Or you do a lot of DIY or just buy the product you want.
Very true! But honestly, a majority of this can be done with limited tools. If you were to want the general shape, you can always just buy a wooden board that's the desired length that you're looking for. You can also have the people at the hardware store cut out the three legs, and middle shelf, based on your measurements. Stores like Home Depot, or Lowe's can do this. And from there, you can use a drill to screw in the screws to hold it all together. It won't be the exact product, but something close enough :D
The thing is, even if you end up having to spend 200 on tools and the wood etc. You get a desk shelf and tools. Not just the desk shelf. Then next time you want something you still have the tools, and more experience :D

I see where you're coming from, I'd have to imagine that a majority of the people watching a DIY woodworking project video would have most of the tools mentioned, if not all.
In the video, I do mention that it can be done with only a circular saw and a drill as well. Those are two of the more common tools. I use the other tools to make the process a little easier, since I have them, but this can actually be done without all of the fancy tools.
Additionally, most of the pieces can also be pre-cut at the hardware store as well, so you might actually be able to put together something very similar without any tools at all.
ROFL. I saw the same dask stand, looked at the price and made one for myself for, like, 20 bucks.
Hahaha, nice! Wood must be cheap in your area! I think I spent around $20-ish on the wood and then some more for the stain, felt material, brushes, poly, and such. Total, it was like $50.
@@MakingMadeSimple No, I used regular ply for the legs and top and 6mm mdf for the drawer divisory. No finish, no felt. That's what drove the price down.
Continuing: It is very nice to see another take on what I made before. Your job is great and comparing my ideas (e.g. I screwed the top to the legs with a regular drill and covered the holes with filler) with yours gave great ideas in case I do another iteration of this design.

This entire thing can be made with a circular saw and a drill. Of course I'm going to use specific tools if I have them, and they make the workflow easier. But they're not all necessary.
