🖐🏻 worst thing: I used to skate a lot, since my 6s. 6 years of inactivity and like 35k more in weight, and I loss all my balance. Also, I'm trying to do outdoor skating. Well, wish me luck or agility at least! This 2 videos are added to my "Rolling" playlist.

Hi there, I am a 33 year old obese girl who always wanted to do skates however everyone around me was ready to discourage me the moment I used to mention skates.
This lockdown I gathered some encouragement and got my self a pair of skates. For initial days I was just walking. I was following lots of tutorials on youtube but I was just walking. I started to doubt my self. I was almost convinced that I wont be able to do it. Then yesterday night I saw your video and repeatedly watched it for 6 to 7 times and today morning, drum roll please, I was able to glide 🙂. Feel like an achiever, all thanks to you ❤ lots of love from India

Something that helps me is to think of “making my feet heavy” this helps with posture and putting my weight on my feet. Imagine you’re a long water balloon and you’re flowing the water from your core down to your feet. If you’re a balloon and you’re light on your feet and your weight is up top, you’ll fall, so if you feel like you’re going off-balance, move your weight back down to your feet and you can’t fall.
But also yeah, stick your arms out, palms down, squat back down and stop wobbling and that’ll usually do the trick.

Not only am I a professional instructor in several disciplines, I’ve also taken lessons in just about every sport from skydiving to scuba diving, and I have to say you are excellent in breaking down techniques into easily absorbed bite-sized prices, give great demos and explain well enough to get the point across without overpowering the learner. It's so nice to watch a video of a lassie who is the same build as me skating. I just starting skating last week, and all the videos I watched up to this point (tik tok etc...) are really super-slim girls who look very dainty, and they're all so amazing at skating & I was starting to think to myself "Maybe I'm not the right shape for this" as I have bigger hips, wider shoulders, I'm pretty chonky in a muscular way and it kind of made me feel less confident :( But you make it look so easy and it gives me a lot of confidence to see women like me being so badass at it. This video was really helpful, thank you so much!

This is so helpful, I wish I'd seen this when I directly started! The idea of pushing while skating for long strides is different to how everyone else I watched seemed to teach it which was giving me the stompy issue.
I'm still struggling with looking up, it's really hard to find smooth surfaces where I am so I always find myself hitting little stones no matter how much I try to clear the area beforehand and I can't stop looking down to spot them as I go

I finally got skates that actually fit me so I've been skating a lot more. I feel like I should be learning this faster I can't do crossovers or go backwards or anything cool yet and I see people learn how to skate in like a week. How long did it take you to learn to skate? I'm so proud of you! I'm glad you were finally able to get some skates that fit you- that really does make a difference!
      - Feeling like you should learn faster because you see others learning fast:
I know it's hard, but it's always discouraging when you compare your skate journey to anyone else. If I did that I'd just quit lol. So don't do it bby! This is YOUR skate journey and no one else's; that's theirs and it's okay if yours is at a different pace. Everyone progresses at different rates. There's also so many factors that feed into that we aren't aware of, each individual and their set of experience/circumstances/resources is different. So don't feel like you're behind- you're on your own skate journey; you will learn and progress in your own timing and way. Don't be hard on yourself either, 'cause I've done that before and it only holds you back. Any time we think we "should" be doing anything, we actually guilting ourselves about an expectation we think we're not meeting. It may be one no one else thinks but we burden ourselves with thinking we gotta reach that because we look around and see others there and we're not. Focus on you & what you're doing! And be nicer to yourself: accept that where you are at is enough. Don't let anyone make you feel like you aren't good enough because ________. Eh, screw that! You are right where you need to be and you are fully capable of getting where you want to be someday as long as you stick with it. Take the time it takes you. Enjoy it. Free yourself of any expectations of where you "should" be and enjoy where you are now. You'll get there, and one day you'll look back and see. I promise. I have done this to myself in the past, setting crazy high expectation for where I felt I needed to be; I know how cruddy it can feel when you put that pressure or expectation on yourself. Let it go! Set yourself free and give yourself permission to start enjoying skating for YOU and see what happens. Tell yourself -in fact make a list!- of all the things you've learned since starting and all things you CAN do and go celebrate those. Sometimes we have to remember how awesome we are and how much progress we've actually made -despite the challenges and obstacles we've faced along the way- and give ourselves credit for that! And please take my encouragements as all love- because these are things I had to go through, learn myself, and tell myself to find myself in a place where I could be content in my own skate journey no matter where I found myself, and regardless of what anyone else thought of my skating. You're not alone, and I'm sure many rollerskaters can relate this feeling of "being behind" or not progression fast enough", it's a common struggle especially starting off, so don't feel bad for feeling that way- but also know you don't have to. I hope you celebrate where you are and what you can do, then go after some more cool things at a pace that allows you to keep having fun while learning more!
      - How long did it take me to learn to skate?
I'm still learning how to skate haha! I think it's an ongoing process, I never see myself as having arrived so I stay humble and keep learning. I end up surprising myself with new skills or tricks usually when I'm feeling inspired and as a result decided to try/do something new! Progress happens organically and intentionally, so make sure you both challenge yourself to keep learning more difficult skills you want to add, but also just have fun and explore things as they come to you. I would say I got a lot of the basics down within the first month thanks to a roller derby boot camp, but some skills took longer. I've been skating for a little over 3 years; I think I learned the fundamentals in about a year.
I'm so happy you found my videos helpful

Ooh this is the perfect video for me! I just got my skates in and got them laced! Today was my first day and I worked on a one boot one shoe method that is one of the beginner exercises to help muscle imbalance and give me better balance. It's very tough and I'm very sore, my foot hurt a bunch. I think I'll need insoles as my skates do fit they're just isn't a lot of heel support or padding lol but I'm slowly getting the hang of the balance of thing :D I don't know how to stop or change direction and I'm only working on proper posture and weight/balance but this will help that for sure! My goal is to be able to skate backwards so I can do those cool flow videos and skate around my local park! I'm not interested in jumps or anything just want to be able to skate backwards, I hear its actually easier cause our bodies are kinda designed that way so that will be fun :D I look forward to incorporating these exercises during my next exercise day!

Got my skates in yesterday but I feel the need to watch these videos first before I attempt it lmao. I used to skate in roller blades growing up and then didn’t do it for a very long time until my first attempt at ice skating 10 years ago which went pretty well surprisingly. So guess I’ll see how roller skating will be like having not skated in over the 10 years 😭. Thank you for this video hopefully it goes well lmao 😆

Great video! Skating is so fun but stopping never is. There are many ways to stop, but pretty much all of them aside from just gradually losing speed across a long distance age your wheels substantially. Wheels are expensive, so I have to get creative with my stops so as to not spend $100 every month on new wheels.

Thank you so much your tutorials but especially for doing them in FLAT SKATES! I'm learning in a pair of Chayas and almost all the content on RUclips is girls in heeled skates. Very different centre of gravity!

Yes! You're welcome Eve! I agree, thanks for appreciating :) I've loved the switch to my Vans DIY skates, never going back to a heeled boot.

@@simon_slays55 You’re welcome! I initially chose flat-boot skates because my feet are too wide for the heeled types, and my ankles felt claustrophobic! :) It takes a bit longer to learn to balance but yeah, so much more comfortable. Thanks again for the flat-boot girl content!

Omg this is the FIRST video where I actually learned and caught on! Lol. I felt the glide under my feet! I finally got it. Only thing is I skate too fast lol. I’m learning to stop too but I’m happy I staggered my feet! That had to be the BEST advice ever given! 🙃😆! Can’t wait to go to the rink tomorrow. I literally just practiced in my basement for over an hr once I caught on lol. I don’t want to forget. 😣
