Tom, thanks for the great video, I just did this mod on my 2021 Crosstrek Sport. For anyone with this model/year, the wiring is a little different for the button (maybe other years too?). They are using a 4 wire system on mine, with 2 blue and 2 yellow wires coming out of the switch, which connect to a purple wire, 2 black grounds and a brown wire on the car harness side. Bridging the purple wire and one of the black grounds triggers the unlock mechanism. I think the other wires have to do with the key-fob sensing unlock, because the hatch will only open with my new inside button if the car is unlocked, instead of unlocking the car and opening the hatch like the button on the outside does. I took some inspiration from one of the other posts on this video and created a 3d printed replacement for the little pop-out panel that insets the button a bit so it is less likely to get accidentally bumped. Pretty happy with the results, thanks again for the video showing the process!

Awesome video and thank you for this informative comment, I have a 2019 forester sport that looks to be the same setup. I’m attempting to find the male and female connectors so I can unplug the original and plug in a small wire sections in between and splice the parallel switch wires with a couple Wago 221 3 conductor connector (trying to avoid splicing the original Subaru wires). Looks like the 4 way connector might be a Sumitomo 6098-1120 and 6098-1116 based on a kingkong-connector listing. And for anyone interested in the 2 way connector in this video, it appears to be a Yazaki 7283-5971-80 and a 7282-5971-80.
I did this mod over the summer and it has been an absolute game changer for car camping! Thanks so much for the level-headed, easy-to-follow tutorial. I don't do a whole lot with electrical - just a bit of car audio - but this was surprisingly simple. Once I had the parts, it took me about 10 minutes. This is just one of those mods where the cost and labor involved are so low compared to the vast improvement in quality of life. Thanks again!
That lever that slides back and forth when hitting the button can be pushed/slid manually. I just remove access cover while camping and then you can reach it easily to release. If you don't want to go through the motions of wiring in the button. Make sure you unlock with key fob first or you may set off alarm.
I utilized your video to remove my panels so I could replace my latch that had gone out. It means a lot to be empowered like this, thank you so so much.
Great Idea... I will do this !! THX I would suggest a small drawer handle, or Ring Guard to prevent shifting cargo from pressing the button while you are driving. You can make one from a bottle cap. Drill with the step bit and mount inverted with the button.

This was a super easy modification that took me about 15-20 minutes include removal of the moulding. My ‘18, however is not a two wire plug (but a four wire plug) so I just tapped one blue wire and one tan wire (no green wire). Checked the button for functionality and it works great. Secured wires, reinstalled all the mouldind, drilled 3/4” hole in the same pop out and button works great. Thanks for great video.
If anyone is interested, an Exped Megamat (10cm, MW) fits perfectly on the right side for solo car camping. You don't even really need a platform if you are okay with a slight incline. just find a way to prop up the space between the front and back seats.

Hey Tom I literally just found your vids yesterday and used them to install my 3rd dash cam (rear facing camera)...wired the cable inside the rubber boots for the existing wiring through the hatch hinge area and headliner/pillar trim...used my imagination and your vids to figure out how to do it...thanks! Thanks to you!! I did the same mod on a 2022 Outback Premium (not a power hatch). At the latch was the purple,blk,blk,brn connector mentioned by others earlier comments. Upon further looking, I seen where there was a brown connector (just like the one in your video) closer to the switch. I spliced in at that brown connector (with the two green wires), similar to how you did. Then ran the wire up inside the passenger side hatch trim. At the top of that piece of trim right before the bend, I drilled and installed the momentary switch (I figured its not likely to be accidently bumped up near the ceiling). Thanks again Tom :)

Glad you enjoyed it! Crosstrek's not the roomiest thing to sleep in, but I'm not picky and it's still a lot of fun. Sometimes it's the little things (like being able to get out easy) that make a difference :)
I own a 2021 Impreza sport hatch and I ran into this issue when I camped in the back of the of it awhile back. I found this video VERY HELPFUL and ended up working this set up into my car. However, my hatch has a lock and unlock button integrated into the loom heat shrink. This meant I had four wires instead of two. I ended up doing both a lock and unlock button (one unit) into my my small square plastic piece and it worked beautifully!
Awesome! Glad it worked, even with a 4-wire setup. I guess my 2019 Premium model lacks some of the bells and whistles others might have which is why this seemed so simple of a mod to me :) My button simply locks / unlocks with the rest of the vehicle's locks, so when I'm on the road with cargo that might move around and hit the button, I just lock the doors and it disables the switch. Regardless, I've been super happy with this simple little change. When I was doing some winter camping in December and sleeping in the Crosstrek it was SOOO nice to just get in and out from the hatch with ease. Thanks for watching and have a good one!

I loved however the one thing I did notice is that the car wont lock fron the hatch unless the keys are further towards the front of the car instead of in the hatch

I've had several 4x4's in the past, but wanted to shift it up a little and create a capable little sleeper vehicle that's as fun on the trails as it is commuting. IMO, it's a remarkably capable little beast and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Good luck getting started with some mods! Spoiler alert: it's a money pit. Once you start it's hard to stop LOL.

Thanks for the great breakdown/instruction on this! We just modified our ‘13 and expanded upon this by adding a safety switch and led to show that the hatch release is armed. Didn’t want our dogs or cargo to hit the hatch release by accident. Pretty excited about the setup!
Great idea! I recently ordered a small plastic cover for the switch to prevent accidental actuation as well. Might cover that as a short update to share the idea with other if interested.

Super awesome hack. I am a dummy and even I could follow the instructions. Unfortunately I have a 2018 crosstrek. The wires were in two group each group have two wires each. Thankful I got lucky and was able to figure out you only need one set of the group of wire. So you don’t need one from one group and the other from the other group. Sorry I can’t explain it super well. Either way I am glad I finally got this annoyance resolved with my 2018 crosstrek. Subaru should have this standard in their vehicle.

This is great thanks for the the how-to! This would have been the perfect time to add some switched LED light strips to the interior tailgate. Really lights up the cargo area. And vice versa for me to add this switch when adding my lights. Also adding 12-volt power too, thanks for that one also!

Hey Tom, Love all your diy videos, your videos inspired me to pickup an '19 Crosstrek over Rav4, plus the Rav4 didn't come in manual lol, love the attention to detail on your videos as well. Thought maybe i suggest to put a tiny ring/knob you may see on back of cell phones on the interior hatch door, that way it's easier to pull down hatch door to close?

As for a knob or something, I had actually considered like a pull down rope or something at one point but it kept getting in the way or getting stuck in the hatch. A knob seems like a good idea but it would need to be secured to one of the interior metal brackets and not just the plastic panel. Honestly, the factory handle indent works fine for me. Or I just pull down on the sheet metal leaving fingerprints LOL

I consider this a good thing since with it locked I won't accidentally kick it open when sleeping or cargo won't hit it and open it while I'm on the road :) Good luck!
Tom, I made this mod today and I have to say your video made it SO EASY! The only snag I ran into was the 2021 Sport had 4 wires instead of 2 at that connector. Was pretty simple to find the correct 2 by making a short jumper wire and shorting the pins until it actuated! Thanks again Tom! Next is the rear power panel!
Good question. I did at first, but if your doors are locked, then the interior switch is disabled since it's on the same circuit as the exterior (OEM) switch. So, if I have cargo in the back that might roll around and hit the switch I just make sure the doors are locked while driving and it renders the switch inoperable. Hope that answers your question. Thinking of running wire from the dash to the hatch for this. I think you mentioned the actuator wires looked like 20ga. Do you think I'd need maybe 16ga or 14ga because of the distance?

My 24 CTW has four wires coming out of the latch (Green, Purple, and 2 Blacks) After leaving the switch it gets complicated as the wires are combined/taped to numerous other wires. Can I tap into two of the 4 wires directly off the latch itself? Which two wires should I choose?

Thank you Tom. I just purchased a 2021 Crosstrek and noticed there is no release mechanism for the hatch back by the driver. Can you show how to run the wire all the way to the front panel so the driver can press and release the hatch back? Great video as always. Somewhat unrelated question. For your Ham antenna did you make a small cutout where the coax comes out of the panel? Also have you done a video on the antenna install if not would you be able to describe how you ran your antenna coax from the radio unit to the back if not to much trouble? Thank you.

Short answer to your question is "yes", I filed out a little notch for the coax to go into the hatch, routed it thru the loom between the hatch and the body, then routed it under the roof liner to the b-pillar where it pops out under the driver seat. Since the switch is wired into the factory switch, when the doors are locked, it renders that interior switch inop. But, now that you've mentioned it, I did a quick search to see what's out there insofar as a mechanical barrier and found these covers from Amazon. Hi Tom, I have a 2022 Crosstrek sport. My hatch release has two yellow and two blue wires on the button side of the harness. The car side of the harness has a purple, brown and two black wires. Any idea where I can find a wire diagram?

Idea is ok 👍, but there is a risk when having lots of stuff inside the trunk and when driving on the road some stuff moved and touched the button, then you guessed it
Yeah, I just lock the doors. Since the interior switch uses the OEM exterior switch, when the doors are locked the switch is inop. But, I'll probably install a cover soon just in case I forget. We all know it just takes that one time :)
I had this concern since we put our dogs in back. To fix it I wired a ‘safety’ toggle switch up on the upper side trim of the hatch. This switch controls the ground of the interior switch. Also stuck a small LED next to the hatch release switch to show if it is armed. Works great!
Hi Brian, thanks for watching! Since I ran the switch in with the factory connector as a simple bypass, it functions just as the OEM switch on the outside would. That is to say that when the vehicle is unlocked, it will open the hatch; when it is locked, it will not function. No need to switch anything on up front in my case because I didn't run an alternate power or ground. I hope I answered your question :) Have a good one!
Fair question :). First, I usually lock my doors while driving. When the doors are locked, the circuit for this button is inactive so hitting it would not result in door opening. Second, I bought a cover for this switch I have yet to install to prevent accidental activation should I forget to lock my doors. For those doing this for the first time, I would suggest a cover for peace of mind. Thanks for watching and chiming in!
I grabbed some 18ga wire from my local auto parts store (1 roll or red, 1 roll of black). If you prefer amazon, I would suggest simply searching for wiring of the specific gauge you need. Please note, gauge choice is dependent on the application. In this video, I was wiring a short parallel low amperage switch which made the choice of 18 gauge reasonable. It's up to you to ensure your choice of wiring meets or exceeds your circuit's demand. Hope that helps a little.

LOL! Welcome aboard! If something is at risk of rolling into the switch I just lock the doors. Since I tapped into the OEM switch, when the doors are locked it renders my interior switch inop. BUT! you're not the first to ask and I actually just ordered what I hope will be a functional cover for the switch in case I have a brain far...forget to lock the doors...and end up with a freeway yardsale like you say. fair point. Technically, I suppose disconnecting the battery when doing any work on automotive electronics is prudent. However, for this, I deemed the maintenance similar to changing a tail light bulb for which disconnecting the battery is not necessary (my opinion). Also, I needed power on to shoot the wires and test the switch to make sure I got my wiring right :). Hope that helps!
Tom, I went through the steps in you video and removed all the paneling... only to find the wiring in the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness is vastly different than your 2019. Wanna shoot a new video using my car as an example :) ?
I assume when sleeping inside you keep the hatch locked. In that case the button won't work until you unlock the hatch. The small cover that you installed the button on is removable so the hatch can be manually opened if the car battery is dead. When camping you can leave the cover off and open the hatch manually instead of installing a button. You may have to unlock the hatch first to prevent the alarm from going off.
You got it right. You can manually pull the lever to open the hatch mechanically, but for me that's just inconvenient. A button that mimics the exterior button (i.e., is inop when doors are locked, and operable when doors are unlocked) is perfect for my needs. Knowing it's inop with doors locked gives me peace of mind that no cargo will accidentally pop the hatch when on the road LOL!
Curious, would I be able to put a button near the driver's seat ? Like near the fuel door release? I got so used to having that trunk release in my Honda that it traded in on my Crosstrek
I don't see why not. Only difference is you'd have to run a long lead from the release actuator to the front of the vehicle. There may be an easier (or smarter) way, but I'm unaware of one at the moment.
Do you know how to remove the reverse light housing? I've had trouble locating an answer or guide. I SUSPECT I'll have access when removing the plastic panel. Just wanted clarification before diving in.
@@TomtheDilettante I believe they were 8mm bolts. There are three (one inside the lid and the other two on the inside edge). Then one plastic piece that locks into the hatch lid.
The concept should be portable to different vehicles, but the execution will vary depending on the wiring and switches used. I can't speak for the Corolla, but I would encourage you to do as I did and just start tinkering if you feel comfortable with automotive electronics in general :)
I haven't had anything bump into and actuate the button yet, but I do plan on putting a cover on it just in case. My main "protection" is that since it's wired in with the exterior OEM button, it does not work when the doors are locked. So, when I'm driving along, I just lock the doors and it renders the button inop for peace of mind. THanks for watching and hope that answers your question!
Great video but IMHO it needs some type of cover to protect against shifting cargo possibly opening it while traveling down a road or trail. BTW great voice. If your not a voice over person you should be. Big money.
Thanks for watching and for the input! Yeah, I thought about that too. My thought is that as long as the doors are locked, the button is non-functional. So I currently rely on that fact to avoid "surprises" :) If I find a cool looking button with a cover I like, I'll probably go with it. As for the voice comment, it's funny to hear you say that. My wife and colleagues have given me that feedback as well and I just don't hear it. I fall right into that category of people that don't like the sound of their own voice when recorded. But...maybe y'all got a point. I was thinking of volunteering voiceover work for corporate training videos just to see if I get any takers and to possibly build a portfolio. We'll see. since it's a low current parallel switch application, I think i just used 18ga. And even that was probably overkill for the application. Hope that helps!
Nice!... Maybe add a flap or something to cover the button? I always have a bunch of loose stuff in the trunk and would be concerned if something pushes the button and opens the hatch as I'm driving.
I thought about that too. If your doors are locked, the button is disabled just like the exterior button would be disabled. Not a perfect solution but a viable one nonetheless to prevent spilling gear all over the road :-)

If anyone is interested, an Exped Megamat (10cm, MW) fits perfectly on the right side for solo car camping. You don't even really need a platform if you are okay with a slight incline. just find a way to prop up the space between the front and back seats.

Hey Tom I literally just found your vids yesterday and used them to install my 3rd dash cam (rear facing camera)...wired the cable inside the rubber boots for the existing wiring through the hatch hinge area and headliner/pillar trim...used my imagination and your vids to figure out how to do it...thanks! Thanks to you!! I did the same mod on a 2022 Outback Premium (not a power hatch). At the latch was the purple,blk,blk,brn connector mentioned by others earlier comments. Upon further looking, I seen where there was a brown connector (just like the one in your video) closer to the switch. I spliced in at that brown connector (with the two green wires), similar to how you did. Then ran the wire up inside the passenger side hatch trim. At the top of that piece of trim right before the bend, I drilled and installed the momentary switch (I figured its not likely to be accidently bumped up near the ceiling). Thanks again Tom :)

I own a 2021 Impreza sport hatch and I ran into this issue when I camped in the back of the of it awhile back. I found this video VERY HELPFUL and ended up working this set up into my car. However, my hatch has a lock and unlock button integrated into the loom heat shrink. This meant I had four wires instead of two. I ended up doing both a lock and unlock button (one unit) into my my small square plastic piece and it worked beautifully!
Awesome! Glad it worked, even with a 4-wire setup. I guess my 2019 Premium model lacks some of the bells and whistles others might have which is why this seemed so simple of a mod to me :) My button simply locks / unlocks with the rest of the vehicle's locks, so when I'm on the road with cargo that might move around and hit the button, I just lock the doors and it disables the switch. Regardless, I've been super happy with this simple little change. When I was doing some winter camping in December and sleeping in the Crosstrek it was SOOO nice to just get in and out from the hatch with ease. Thanks for watching and have a good one!

I loved however the one thing I did notice is that the car wont lock fron the hatch unless the keys are further towards the front of the car instead of in the hatch

I've had several 4x4's in the past, but wanted to shift it up a little and create a capable little sleeper vehicle that's as fun on the trails as it is commuting. IMO, it's a remarkably capable little beast and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Good luck getting started with some mods! Spoiler alert: it's a money pit. Once you start it's hard to stop LOL.

Thanks for the great breakdown/instruction on this! We just modified our ‘13 and expanded upon this by adding a safety switch and led to show that the hatch release is armed. Didn’t want our dogs or cargo to hit the hatch release by accident. Pretty excited about the setup!
Great idea! I recently ordered a small plastic cover for the switch to prevent accidental actuation as well. Might cover that as a short update to share the idea with other if interested.

I did the same mod but mounted mine on the top of the panel by the glass. That way shifting cargo won’t press the button by mistake
Super awesome hack. I am a dummy and even I could follow the instructions. Unfortunately I have a 2018 crosstrek. The wires were in two group each group have two wires each. Thankful I got lucky and was able to figure out you only need one set of the group of wire. So you don’t need one from one group and the other from the other group. Sorry I can’t explain it super well. Either way I am glad I finally got this annoyance resolved with my 2018 crosstrek. Subaru should have this standard in their vehicle.

This is great thanks for the the how-to! This would have been the perfect time to add some switched LED light strips to the interior tailgate. Really lights up the cargo area. And vice versa for me to add this switch when adding my lights. Also adding 12-volt power too, thanks for that one also!

Hey Tom, Love all your diy videos, your videos inspired me to pickup an '19 Crosstrek over Rav4, plus the Rav4 didn't come in manual lol, love the attention to detail on your videos as well. Thought maybe i suggest to put a tiny ring/knob you may see on back of cell phones on the interior hatch door, that way it's easier to pull down hatch door to close?

As for a knob or something, I had actually considered like a pull down rope or something at one point but it kept getting in the way or getting stuck in the hatch. A knob seems like a good idea but it would need to be secured to one of the interior metal brackets and not just the plastic panel. Honestly, the factory handle indent works fine for me. Or I just pull down on the sheet metal leaving fingerprints LOL

Thanks for watching! Fun and simple mod. Note that this interior switch has the same functionality as the exterior one so it will not work if the doors are locked. I consider this a good thing since with it locked I won't accidentally kick it open when sleeping or cargo won't hit it and open it while I'm on the road :) Good luck!

Tom, I made this mod today and I have to say your video made it SO EASY! The only snag I ran into was the 2021 Sport had 4 wires instead of 2 at that connector. Was pretty simple to find the correct 2 by making a short jumper wire and shorting the pins until it actuated! Thanks again Tom! Next is the rear power panel!

Good question. I did at first, but if your doors are locked, then the interior switch is disabled since it's on the same circuit as the exterior (OEM) switch. So, if I have cargo in the back that might roll around and hit the switch I just make sure the doors are locked while driving and it renders the switch inoperable. Hope that answers your question. I'd mount the switch on the flat surrounding area perpendicular to the window. Nothing will bump into it there, not even your feet!

Thinking of running wire from the dash to the hatch for this. I think you mentioned the actuator wires looked like 20ga. Do you think I'd need maybe 16ga or 14ga because of the distance?

My 24 CTW has four wires coming out of the latch (Green, Purple, and 2 Blacks) After leaving the switch it gets complicated as the wires are combined/taped to numerous other wires. Can I tap into two of the 4 wires directly off the latch itself? Which two wires should I choose?

Thank you Tom. I just purchased a 2021 Crosstrek and noticed there is no release mechanism for the hatch back by the driver. Can you show how to run the wire all the way to the front panel so the driver can press and release the hatch back? Great video as always. Somewhat unrelated question. For your Ham antenna did you make a small cutout where the coax comes out of the panel? Also have you done a video on the antenna install if not would you be able to describe how you ran your antenna coax from the radio unit to the back if not to much trouble? Thank you.
Thanks for watching and the kind words! Short answer to your question is "yes", I filed out a little notch for the coax to go into the hatch, routed it thru the loom between the hatch and the body, then routed it under the roof liner to the b-pillar where it pops out under the driver seat.

Thanks for watching! Ya know...I was worried about that too, so right now, when I have loose cargo that might bump into the button I just lock the doors while driving. Since the switch is wired into the factory switch, when the doors are locked, it renders that interior switch inop. But, now that you've mentioned it, I did a quick search to see what's out there insofar as a mechanical barrier and found these covers from Amazon. Need to dig in a little more to see if they'd fit what I have, but it's something I might install as an extra measure of safety.

Hi Tom, I have a 2022 Crosstrek sport. My hatch release has two yellow and two blue wires on the button side of the harness. The car side of the harness has a purple, brown and two black wires. Any idea where I can find a wire diagram?
Ah, never mind. I used a jumper wire to test and see which two wires actuate the release; outside blue & outside yellow.

Idea is ok 👍, but there is a risk when having lots of stuff inside the trunk and when driving on the road some stuff moved and touched the button, then you guessed it
Yeah, I just lock the doors. Since the interior switch uses the OEM exterior switch, when the doors are locked the switch is inop. But, I'll probably install a cover soon just in case I forget. We all know it just takes that one time :)
I had this concern since we put our dogs in back. To fix it I wired a ‘safety’ toggle switch up on the upper side trim of the hatch. This switch controls the ground of the interior switch. Also stuck a small LED next to the hatch release switch to show if it is armed. Works great!

Hi Brian, thanks for watching! Since I ran the switch in with the factory connector as a simple bypass, it functions just as the OEM switch on the outside would. That is to say that when the vehicle is unlocked, it will open the hatch; when it is locked, it will not function. No need to switch anything on up front in my case because I didn't run an alternate power or ground. I hope I answered your question :) Have a good one!

Ummm...what if you're driving and something hits that little button?
Fair question :). First, I usually lock my doors while driving. When the doors are locked, the circuit for this button is inactive so hitting it would not result in door opening. Second, I bought a cover for this switch I have yet to install to prevent accidental activation should I forget to lock my doors. For those doing this for the first time, I would suggest a cover for peace of mind. Thanks for watching and chiming in!

I grabbed some 18ga wire from my local auto parts store (1 roll or red, 1 roll of black). If you prefer amazon, I would suggest simply searching for wiring of the specific gauge you need. Please note, gauge choice is dependent on the application. In this video, I was wiring a short parallel low amperage switch which made the choice of 18 gauge reasonable. It's up to you to ensure your choice of wiring meets or exceeds your circuit's demand. Hope that helps a little.

LOL! Welcome aboard! If something is at risk of rolling into the switch I just lock the doors. Since I tapped into the OEM switch, when the doors are locked it renders my interior switch inop. BUT! you're not the first to ask and I actually just ordered what I hope will be a functional cover for the switch in case I have a brain far...forget to lock the doors...and end up with a freeway yardsale like you say. No mention of disconnecting the battery, is this just a given or is it not necessary?
fair point. Technically, I suppose disconnecting the battery when doing any work on automotive electronics is prudent. However, for this, I deemed the maintenance similar to changing a tail light bulb for which disconnecting the battery is not necessary (my opinion). Also, I needed power on to shoot the wires and test the switch to make sure I got my wiring right :). Hope that helps!

Tom, I went through the steps in you video and removed all the paneling... only to find the wiring in the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness is vastly different than your 2019. Wanna shoot a new video using my car as an example :) ?
I assume when sleeping inside you keep the hatch locked. In that case the button won't work until you unlock the hatch.
The small cover that you installed the button on is removable so the hatch can be manually opened if the car battery is dead. When camping you can leave the cover off and open the hatch manually instead of installing a button. You may have to unlock the hatch first to prevent the alarm from going off.
You got it right. You can manually pull the lever to open the hatch mechanically, but for me that's just inconvenient. A button that mimics the exterior button (i.e., is inop when doors are locked, and operable when doors are unlocked) is perfect for my needs. Knowing it's inop with doors locked gives me peace of mind that no cargo will accidentally pop the hatch when on the road LOL!
Curious, would I be able to put a button near the driver's seat ? Like near the fuel door release? I got so used to having that trunk release in my Honda that it traded in on my Crosstrek
I don't see why not. Only difference is you'd have to run a long lead from the release actuator to the front of the vehicle. There may be an easier (or smarter) way, but I'm unaware of one at the moment.
Do you know how to remove the reverse light housing? I've had trouble locating an answer or guide. I SUSPECT I'll have access when removing the plastic panel. Just wanted clarification before diving in.

@@TomtheDilettante I believe they were 8mm bolts. There are three (one inside the lid and the other two on the inside edge). Then one plastic piece that locks into the hatch lid.
I just bought a 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback, and I'm wondering if this idea would apply to any vehicle?
The concept should be portable to different vehicles, but the execution will vary depending on the wiring and switches used. I can't speak for the Corolla, but I would encourage you to do as I did and just start tinkering if you feel comfortable with automotive electronics in general :)

I haven't had anything bump into and actuate the button yet, but I do plan on putting a cover on it just in case. My main "protection" is that since it's wired in with the exterior OEM button, it does not work when the doors are locked. So, when I'm driving along, I just lock the doors and it renders the button inop for peace of mind. THanks for watching and hope that answers your question!

Great video but IMHO it needs some type of cover to protect against shifting cargo possibly opening it while traveling down a road or trail. BTW great voice. If your not a voice over person you should be. Big money.
Thanks for watching and for the input! Yeah, I thought about that too. My thought is that as long as the doors are locked, the button is non-functional. So I currently rely on that fact to avoid "surprises" :) If I find a cool looking button with a cover I like, I'll probably go with it.
As for the voice comment, it's funny to hear you say that. My wife and colleagues have given me that feedback as well and I just don't hear it. I fall right into that category of people that don't like the sound of their own voice when recorded. But...maybe y'all got a point. since it's a low current parallel switch application, I think i just used 18ga. And even that was probably overkill for the application. Hope that helps!

I thought about that too. If your doors are locked, the button is disabled just like the exterior button would be disabled. Not a perfect solution but a viable one nonetheless to prevent spilling gear all over the road :-)
