How To Make BETTER SOUNDING Drum Covers!

  • There's an ocean of terrible electronic drum covers out there. If you want to stand out, up your drum cover game by using Drum Software Plugins! Most People Just Record Stereo R/L coming straight from the drum module. Maybe with the music baked into the track because it's going the AUX In of the module too. That's a really easy way to record and really great for your first couple dozen drum covers. But if you really want to get better sound, drum plugins on your computer are the way to go. Here's how it works: (Tutorial Steps Written Below)
    Watch Part 2 Here!
    • How To Make Better LOO...
    ✅The Drum Software: Superior Drummer 3
    ✅The DAW: Reaper
    ✅The Audio Interface: Focusrite 2i2
    amzn.to/2L5NUmz
    ✅Here's A Headphone Extension Cable To Reach Your Laptop:
    amzn.to/2HovZ9v
    1. Connect your computer to your laptop via USB cable. If you have an old drum module you'll need a MIDI to USB Cable.
    2. Download a DAW program such as Reaper
    3. Download a Drum Plugin, such as a Superior Drummer 3 or Addictive Drums. (this is sometimes called a Drum VST or Drum Software
    4. READ THE MANUAL for your DAW, every one of them is different, so it's kinda impossible to explain how to use each one in this video :)
    5. Open up your Midi Device Settings and see if your drum module has shown up. If it hasn't, you may have to restart your module, or close out your DAW and open it up again. When you see the module (TD30 for example) click on it and enable midi from this device.
    6. Set Audio Thread to highest priority
    7. Lower Buffer size to 64 in the audio settings menu. This lowers latency
    8. Open your drum plugin that you downloaded inside the DAW. Open the Midi/Edrums setting inside of the drum software. Select your drum module brand. This maps the midi notes correctly for your drumset. That way when you hit a drum, it makes the right sound.
    9. Plug your headphones into THE LAPTOP. Not your drum module.
    10. Press record and play!
    11. Stop Record, adjust the drum audio to your liking, switch sounds ect. Then go to file, render, and name your track. Once rendered, you can then use this new high quality track in your video editor for your cover!

    Justin,
    Thank you for all your videos and content! Great stuff for those of us who are new to the edrum world.
    I have a question for you regarding mixing and matching of sets and modules.
    I’ve heard you speak very highly of both the alesis strike pro module and atv adrum sets.
    I’m curious if you might know if combining the adrum set with the alesis strike pro module would work well. I like the idea of having the flexibility of the alesis strike pro but the durability of the atv set.
    Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you again for the time you put into making all your content!!

    I'd been waiting for a video like this - thanks for making it, and I def would love a Part 2! I never even considered that really the MIDI performance is whats important and that changing kits is possible down the road! I have SD3, Addictive 2, and recently bought Groove Agent 5 when it was on sale. However, it seems that SD3 is the one thats the best designed for use with Roland kits. Issue I've seen with Addictive 2 is that all the kits are limited to 4 piece kits (so how are you supposed to add the extra pads/toms or cymbals??), and for Groove Agent - Steinberg has a cool demo on RUclips of a drummer performing with the plugin but it was only after I bought it that I realized he was using a Yamaha kit (which is nearly the only kit preset you can load inside it - I hear its a pain to tweak the hi-hat response of eDrums inside it). Have you tried AD2 or GA5 - if so have you bumped into the same limitations or found workarounds?

    Hi Justin, I have been watching your channel for several years now, this is my first comment.
    First let me say that 65 drums is absolutely brilliant. It was the mention of Premier Pro that prompted this response, I have just started using it for editing videos of my band for our new website (gnt-band.co.uk). Premier Pro is a very powerful tool but takes a lot of learning, I would love to see something about using Premier Pro with band videos. Keep up the good work

    Also, using external drum sounds, you dont have to have a super expensive module, if yours breaks,(like mine did), you can get a lower down module, as long as it has midi out, youre golden.
    Just thought, some DAW wont allow cymbal clamp, Ableton does not, Logic X does., not sure on Reaper.

    • @Heliophobos
      @Heliophobos 4 года назад +1

      I use a cheap Medelli drum module to trigger Addictive Drums 2 and it works great inside and outside of Reaper.
      It sounds leagues better than any Roland or Yamaha module at a fraction of the cost.

    Hey Justin. Long time lurker, love your channel. Looking into getting an E-Kit. Given myself a $5000aus budget to be fully set up. Was either considering the Roland TD-17KVX and deck it out with replacements like you did in your video, or buy the Alesis Strike pro?? Plz help

  • @GoulartGH
    @GoulartGH 4 года назад +5

    yo nice, REAPER is great; one can also use it for free for 1 month I believe, so it's easy to test and see if this workflow will work before actually spending money on anything.
    btw, if I have problems with latency (because Windows) and I don't want to buy an audio interface, what's your opinion on recording using the module audio as reference (instead of the VST), then choosing the drumkit in the VST afterwards? since I'm probably going to be changing/adjusting the drum sounds after anyway, I don't think it matters that much which sound I listen to while recording.
    also, great video as usual!

    • @drumyogi9281
      @drumyogi9281 4 года назад

      What module are you using? You shouldn't be having any latency issues. I have a Xeon 1231v3, 16GB DDR3 and I don't have any latency issues with a TD-50.

    • @GoulartGH
      @GoulartGH 4 года назад +1

      @@drumyogi9281 you are indeed correct that I shouldn't be having latency issues; I was using FL Studio ASIO (~60ms latency) instead of ASIO4ALL (~6ms). sadly, using ASIO4ALL means that I can't listen to stuff at RUclips at the same time, unless I do some stuff with Virtual Audio Cables (which I did, but it feels kind of cumbersome)
      I think my question is still relevant for the people who don't want to switch audio devices every time they open their DAW so they can listen to RUclips while they play the drumkit

    • @drumyogi9281
      @drumyogi9281 4 года назад

      @@GoulartGH oof that sucks. I don't have internet (only on my phone) so I never even thought about that. Hopefully there is a work around. Maybe download the video in mp3 and transfer that to your DAW but that just sounds like a pain the the arse.

    Welcome to the dark side, my Padawan. :D
    Just two additional notes to further decrease latency:
    1. Disable the internal sounds in your module
    2. Use a dedicated audio interface instead of the built-in interface from the module as those are slower than almost any external audio interface. Especially when the module needs to send your external audio coming from your iPhone additionally.

  • @lucyferina

    I have a 4 year old laptop with 16 gb of ram, and an SSD, it runs Reaper, Steven Slate, and youtube no problem, I never changed the buffer size so it is running at 256 but I have no latency, regardless of running the audio from the module via USB or just sending MIDI, I do have a Focusrite scarlett 2I4 which I also use. another way you can do it without running RUclips is to load the audio track in a track in reaper, then load the drum VST and hit record, it will only record your drums but you will have the included audio track that you can also render as a complete file after you adjust levels to taste. The Roland TD11 can send audio via USB or you can also use the outputs to connect it to the Focusrite, or like you do from the module's headphone out. Many different ways....

    So before I purchase SD3 or upgrade to the full version of SDD5, I've used the free SDD5 and the free MT-PowerDrumKit and for the life of me I cannot get the volume loud enough to enjoy live drumming from my TD-27. I can just barely hear when I hit a pad and if I crank my headphone gain on my interface and/or the output in Reaper, I'm at risk of losing what's left of my hearing if any other track plays or if I forget and just mouse click on one of the drums in the UI. I've connected my kit via USB and Reaper sees it, no problem. I'm using a Focusrite 2i2 for the output and the Focusrite AISO drivers. What I don't know about DAW and MIDI you could write an internet about but I have googled and watched vids until my eyes are bleeding. Any thoughts from either Justin or the community?

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  4 года назад

      You can't remove the drums fully from the song. You have to download a song without drums. There are websites that sell those types stem tracks with one instrument missing. Or search youtube for drum less version: name of song.

    • @infojester3318
      @infojester3318 4 года назад

      I would have assumed people would just try to tune the existing drums as low as possible as I imagine drumless tracks would be hard to find for most songs. Thanks for the reply

    How are you not playing over the music still? My setup is the same as yours with my phone going into the module and I have both outs going into my interface and also USB into computer. I'm still having drums play over the music on inputs 1/2. How do I separate my drum audio from my module and and the audio from my phone?

    • @fannydwargee1818
      @fannydwargee1818 2 года назад

      This one already driving me nuts, the outs from the module outputs the audio from the phone and the audio from the drum kit itself at the same time, perhaps the module that Justin uses has the feature of outputting just the AUX IN without including the edrums sounds. IMHO the point would be to get an audio interface with typical RCA IN plugs and a cable from minijack/lightning to RCA so you'd end up plugging the phone (with Spotify, RUclips or whatever) directly to the audio interface.

    • @fannydwargee1818
      @fannydwargee1818 2 года назад

      Ok, I see, with most of the Roland modules under the MIDI Setup you can set "Local Ctr" to OFF to disable the internal sounds

    Most importantly, learn to play the song properly. Nothing worse than playing the song “with my own take on it”
    Respect the song, respect the original drummer and respect the feel of the song.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  4 года назад +1

      That's one view for sure, many drummers make note for note replications of songs. But my view is that music is always changing, it's meant to be played around with. If you look at some of the best drum covers on RUclips, they are from incredible drummers doing their own take on the song. It's not disrespectful, it's just how music works. Why would I play a song exactly note for note? I'm not adding anything, I'd just be playing the song slightly worse than the original drummer. Just an opinion.

    • @anthonyb924
      @anthonyb924 4 года назад

      65 Drums fair enough we can agree to disagree. What’s your opinion of a drummer not playing his / her song live in concert / gig as it was recorded in the studio? I know I like to see my favourite songs played note for note or it grinds my gears (to borrow a phrase haha)
