  • It's easy to record electronic drums, right? Sure...if you can get past cable/signal routing, MIDI mapping, software, latency, and a ton of other little "gotchas" that eat up the time you should be spending on playing.
ROUTING DIAGRAM (new for 2020): chadedwardmusic.com/wp-conten...
The key to getting the most out of your electronic drum kit is creating a versatile, efficient, and effective workflow. In this video, I share my "always on" workflow that allows me to have my Roland V-Drums ready to practice, write, or record at the push of a button. I no longer spend time moving stuff around, connecting wires, or remembering how something should be configured. In this video I walk you through how I configure my drums and home studio to get this level of flexibility.
It doesn't matter whether you're using something like the new Alesis Strike Pro, a mid-level Roland V-Drum kit, or even something like an old entry-level Simmons kit. This workflow will work for you.

I immediately refuse to watch videos that start with a loud noise, especially distorted guitar. goodbye.

Thanks for taking the time to explain the process. I love playing my drums at 72. I had a SONOR acoustic set since 1980 but was so loud it annoyed everyone so I didn't play it. Purchased a Roland TD-17 a few years ago and was amazed at the sound. It will be a while before I buy the gear you are describing, but I know a little more about what is required. Thanks again.

Good video. Thanks for not having background music. I understand all of this, but what if I want to use the sounds from my Alesis Strike Pro SE, and not a totally different drumkit? The Strike Pro has outputs for every piece, kick, snare, toms, etc., so would it make sense to feed this into the DAW somehow and also record with MIDI?

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to get up and running with recording on my e-kit but it's been a pain in the ass. I used to record into logic pro on a 2010 macbook pro, but that died. I tried recording onto a windows machine using reaper and thats when I learned I also needed a vst like ez-drummer.

Hi, great vid, you really seem to know your stuff. I have an electronic kit, laptop running Reaper and a Focusrite Scarlet interface. At this stage I just want to do two things: 1) record drums to existing backing tracks which are in Reaper; 2) do basic drum cover vids. For now, I'm happy to use the sounds from the Alesis Surge kit. What would you suggest?

Hey there ... Thanks for this video. Is there way to use the Roland TD module sounds to record in the DAW? I have connected these with VST plugins and they are working just fine , but what if I want to use the sounds from the module itself? I think there is an option "midi" option in the module called as "Local Control" on or off ? I have put those on but the MIDI audio from the module is not being heard?

Hey man! Awesome information! A few questions: what kind of mount do you use for that micro mixer and also for the phone to your rack? That’s such a great setup. Also, do you have any tips for being able to remotely record from behind the kit without needing my laptop directly next to me? Thanks man

Hey! I love the video, and I will be experimenting with this stuff shortly. One question I have is this: I am also using Sonar Pro, and I was just using my headphones to my laptop headphone jack and getting my sound from the DAW. Is there a reason to not do this? Also, I was having an issue with my hi hat frequently triggering the wrong note, ex. I was hitting the top of the cymbal while closed in a 8th note pattern but occasionally it would cut out or register as an open hi hit hat. This doesn't happen at all when playing through the module itself, only the DAW.
