  • In this video I explain a few strategies I've been using to help reduce my technology consumption and fight tech overreach in my life. Yes, several of these strategies utilize their own technologies, but the idea is the lessen the grip that all-pervasive tech has on our lives without completely eliminating it. Thank for watching and let me know what you think in the comments!

    Up until the 80s science was dominant and technology followed. Since the turn of the century science took a back seat, but technology has been running rampant. It went from being practical to being intrusive and behaviour-modifying.

    One nice thing about a landline if your power goes out your phone still works and you have communication. No worries about battery life or a signal.

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  8 месяцев назад +10

      Agreed! They’re phasing it out almost completely in Canada though. Most of the “landline” service around my area is VOIP which uses your router, so if its down, I believe the phone is too. Thanks for the comment!

      You're right. I remember when I was using my laptop connected to a landline (with a 56kbps modem, many moons ago) and the power went down. I continued to browse the net as if nothing had happened.

      @@buckyyyblandlines supply their own power. a small amount only enough to power the phone basically. so if you're using dial-up internet, it might still work in a blackout.

    I’ve been on a personal journey to de-tech my life ever since 2020. I now own a Jelly Star phone (tiny smartphone), I bought retro game consoles and a CRT, I got an old MacBook for writing and playing old games, it does not connect to the internet. I have a little collection of iPods and a Sony Walkman CD player, as well as an Old Bose iPod dock and a Sony boombox. I also haven been collecting dvds and vhs, I’ve been watching old tv series and anime’s I used to love!

    This is really good to see. I work in the IT field and love tech, but I myself also feel tech is moving WAY to quickly, people are so quick to give up their identity with biometrics, face scans, etc all for convenience. There is no such thing as pure privacy. If you have any voice activated devices like Alexa, they listen and store your voice. Your TV and cell phone listens to you. Your search history is never truly deleted. The list goes on. And now with A.I. being added, they are introducing it slowly to get people comfortable. Then when A.I. really picks up it will feel like the norm. We definitely need to take a step back and not rely so much on technology.

    That's really good, especially the phone part, the mobile one, might have to think about that. Oh I always watch videos while doing stuff round the house, that's a things that's come on since I found RUclips in the past few years which if I'm honest isn't the best thing especially if you want to concentrate on the things you're doing, but it's more fun 🤔😬
    I applaud you for doing this though. It's very difficult with a house to run and 2 small girls 😅

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah the Punkt is a pretty cool device! And yeah I totally feel you. It is so nice to have a video or podcast on in the background while you do something around the house. Like you, I found that my concentration wasn't as strong though, so hence trying to cut back on that behaviour. I thought about how in the past I maybe went an entire day without much quiet time for my mind to do its own thing without an input from someone or something else, and that realization really pushed me to try doing one thing at a time. Thanks for watching Adam!

I already have a “dumb smartphone” to replace my iPhone, and I have an iPod video 5.5 for my music collection being delivered in just about a week!! I think your way of doing things is more of an extremity than most people are willing to go. For the most part of my life I struggle with technology, especially when you call software a technology, but hardware side of tech as well. I love shooting film photos and I wear a simple watch and ride non-electric bike, it is sometimes harder to try living with outdated tech. I always thought that I need a dumb phone, for some time I even had one - but there are plans to switch off 2G/3G networks (making most real dumb-phones useless) and having a dumbed down phone with android is a no-way solution. Mainly because you get all the issues of android and no advantages of dumb phones. Besides, where I live there are many ways a smartphone is almost a necessity - paying for parking, renting a car, or even logging to my work accounts - really, I no longer mind having to use an iPhone, and I made a mental switch, not a physical. Because when used wisely, any technology can suit your lifestyle, overusing it is what makes things hard. My iphone is as dumb and as unessential as it can get, does not wake me up at night and is not a form of my personal entertainment, yet it is a useful tool that allows me to ditch a lot of unessential tools I used to own and use for single purpose.

    I converted an old windows tablet, pulled 3 audio sources out of it and added 3 fm transmitters, then with simple scripts it broadcasts 2 internet radio stations and my youtube playlist with podcasts/debates/documentaries, i use an old vintage wooden radio to listen to it, its on 24/7. I also bought a simple watch, so i can check the time wothout reaching for my cellphone. And yes, desktop PC is the way to go. My problem is im intereseted in so many things, i need to read something constantly, theres a software that creates a "newspaper" from a list of websites and sends it to kindle, i will give it a try.

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  7 месяцев назад +2

      The tablet conversion you mentioned sounds like it should be a RUclips video of its own! Very cool! I like the sound of that news gathering software you mentioned also. Thanks for commenting!

    • @easterneurope451
      @easterneurope451 7 месяцев назад

      @@spencers-adventures maybe you could try this radio broadcasting project? I had a windows tablet and a few parts already, you can recycle old tablets, cables and cell phone chargers, a few fm transmitters is like 10 bucks, i can send a detail manual, theres no soldering. I like how i can go back home and turn on any radio and listen to what i like and it works instantly. Recycling old electronics is so satisfying, on top of that these vintage radios look so nice. I think someone should promote the idea.

    The reason desktops aren't going anywhere is businesses, gamers and modularity. Laptops are crap for making a system you like most of the time, and even when it isn't, you are constrained by size, meaning the hardware will never be the latest and greatest. Linux operating systems are very customizable too, so you could have a modern desktop and put in limitations all you want. I actually think desktops are a good way to have modern tech but not have it following you everywhere

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  8 месяцев назад

      I agree completely with you! Desktops are perfect for allowing you to use tech but in a fixed space, and that’s not something that should be taken lightly. I need to look into a Linux system one day, that’s never been my thing but I’m definitely interested. Thanks for the comment!

    Desktops are not going the way of the dodo at all. There are plenty of people building all types of crazy gaming rigs with all sorts of components. Not that I would recommend you to do the same, but you may find plenty of components or even entire workstations, perhaps even with a monitor and mouse/keyboard, sold on the aftermarket.
    Their performance should be plenty for doing anything outside gaming, every basic thing one would use their computer for. And I do not think this should change throughout this decade (perhaps even the next). Hell, the desktop PC survived:
    - the laptop
    - the smartphone
    - the tablet
    - and even for a VR set, you sometimes need a computer.
    It just seems nothing can ever replace a full-fledged desktop PC.

    i hate the way people use the term "technology" to refer only to modern corporate-capitalist platforms... there's nothing wrong with technology nor is there a reason to distance oneself from it. It's MODERN WEB PLATFORMS that's fucking with y'all brains

      False.

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  8 месяцев назад +5

      I definitely see your point and for the most part agree with it, but I feel like over the past generation “technology” mainly referring to online technologies have become inextricably linked to capitalism. Very few spots of the internet exist where you’re not being sold to, and unless you use add-ons you will be tracked so things can be better marketed and sold to you, and so you can be better predicted and manipulated to continually use these platforms. The device of the phone, the technology of phone calls is not being called into question, but I’m using technology as a blanket term to talk about mainly the online world and all it holds, and not since the earliest days of the internet has it been a free-use platform to find information. There’s a lot more complex things at work which your comment points too and that’s what I’m criticizing and attempting to distance from. It is quite hard to be online at all without being in the whims and under the influence of a corporation, and that’s the problem. Thanks for your comment
